Re: OOC Chatter (1)

I find it harder and harder to find new authors I enjoy, styles change. I still prefer the older writers I find.

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

I should give him a look, been awhile since I read much of his work, though I read a lot of sword and sorcery books by other authors. A fun genre.

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

Curious, has anyone seem a house rule on how magic users can share spells, if at all?

It was a common step in a lot of games for the mages to pool their knowledge.

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

I think, usually it's a matter of enough time + read magic + % roll to know spell.

There may be special ink and whatnot required.   If it's allowed, I am open to trading spells one for one, if we've got the downtime and materials.

Excellent, let us hope we both live long enough for such a thing to come about.

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

Sharing magic has always been a thing that every DM house rules to their liking.

Between the PHB and DMG the most it mentions is special inks that are hard to buy or you have to make yourself for the actual writing of the spell in your book (which is similar to the 1st level Write Spell's requirements) and making your learn % to understand it obviously.

Beyond that is where the house rules come in.  Some consider magic spells highly rare and you have to have the Write spell both for ones that you make your learn roll for and can cast as well as the ones you can't yet.  Using the spell to add it to your spell book destroys the copy in whatever book it was in originally (or scroll if it was on that since 1st ed has scrolls capable of holding many multiples of spells on them).  Those same DM's will also say if you reach a high enough level to write Scrolls then you can make 'new' copies of the spell for others to inscribe in their books but that means surviving to anywhere between 7th and 16th level.

Others just say time if you've made your spell learn chance and you can inscribe it into yours.  The original copy survives and you make your own.

Usually the difference in idea depends on if the DM says that a spell in your spellbook can be read off like a scroll which in turn casts the spell but removes it from your spellbook permanently (till you find another copy to add in).

In reply to Kossoth Zan (msg # 248):

Correct, you have to know Write and have the special inks to inscribe into your book. You can cast a spell from your book, but it will disappear, So do you really want to?  Others just say time if you've made your spell learn chance and you can inscribe it into yours.  The original copy survives and you make your own. yes, agreed

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

Sadly Write is not only not in my books, but appears to be one that I can never learn. If we do share, we shall probably have to hire a third party to do it. Maybe the scribe here has the skills? No clue yet.

Sleeping, which is mostly the only place I go when not on these days. The gam,e hasn't progressed much though, not like there would be much for me to do here.

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

In the very few campaigns I ran, all Magic Users could automatically learn read magic, write, and detect magic.  It never made sense to me that a magic user couldn't use those spells; seemed like that would be an automatic flunk-out from mage school or whatever.

Nerull is such an easy going, generous DM!   Some would really make you toil, sweat, and suffer for that write spell!    And some of you know exactly who I speak of.
