If you can't WRITE, who makes your spellbook for you? Makes no sense.

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

If I understand --  Write is only necessary when you fail your % to know spell.  It's a way of getting it into the book, so you can check again after gaining a level.  I think --  I mean I'd have to go review the rules.

That's why, it comes with a chance of taking damage.  It's an RP thing; like, how much do you really want that spell?

I don't believe it is necessary, when you make your % roll.  In that case, you write it in w/o the spell.

Write isn't used at all in 2nd Ed;  they erased write.  ;)    Neither was it in the earlier rules.  The OD&D rules & clones don't use it; strictly a 1st ed. thing.

I'm sure Nerull won't force you to take it, if you don't want to Astrid.

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

No, I've taken it!  Because one day, there will come that spell -- especially with a -15 on every school beyond the specialty.   Just pointing out it isn't necessary for a mage to expand their book.

I need to read more about what it is to be a specialist as well. I know it does something to saving throws.

Yes;  we get +1 on saves vs. our own school.   And enemies get -1 on theirs.

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

I just re-read write, and it doesn't seem to give a second chance to learn a spell when gaining a level. Of course it might become a house rule, that would be nice. Sucks when you lose a spell you really want.

Did you say it was harder to learn spells that are not banned, but are out of our school? Do we get a bonus to learning spells in our school?

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

You can't learn any spells from your opposition schools.    Pathfinder eventually changed that, but this isn't pathfinder.

You can learn spells from any other schools --  but again -15% to know them.

And, bonus to learn the specialty is +15%

I've played a fair number of specialists --  got a transmuter in another game. (like Circe! Some day...)  In spite of some of the limit, I like the flavor and RP angle it gives.

And I wanted to get that spell in early;  before everyone else charges in, and I can't use it, w/o putting party members out too.   Been in that situation, one too many times...

Astrid will cast at the biggest concentration of them, if it isn't possible to catch all of them in the area.

Had hoped for better than three, but beats the hell out of nothing.

How far away are the sleeping ones?

Ideally, they need to be killed, before they wake up.    A task for one of our sneaky halflings, perhaps?

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

Eh, sir, there is no save vs. sleep spell.  Usually.

It normally affects some number of hit dice, rolled randomly.

oops, then 5 are down, I thought it was save vs. spell? I'm not good at AD&D rules, been a while since I read them.
