10th of Ilcuk; Monsoon Season

It is late afternoon on the 10th day of Ilcuk. The middle of monsoon season and the short-lived torrential downpours serve to wash the waste and corruption of Pheze into the Canden Sea. The rains will last another three months before before they are more tolerable again, the locals will often joke that the time between monsoons is when Glil has wandered off to refill his bladder before pissing on Pheze again.

One of those rains has begun outside of your favorite tavern, the familiar sound of sitting beneath a waterfall thunders down from the poorly patched roof. An out of tune harpsichord struggles to be heard above the noise. Several drunk sailors have begun dancing along, but most of the clientele of The Last Mistake are simply trying to avoid the heat.

Asreelm has settled you four at your usual table and Bellach has distractedly taken your orders before moving off to stop a brewing fight, deliver meals to three other tables, and be reminded by Asreelm that he needs to take "special care" of his new friends at another table.

The storm shutters are thrown open as is the door to, ostensibly, let in a breeze to cool off the tavern, the end result being a humid, hot room with rivulets of rain water flowing from various holes in the roof and out into the streets beyond.

You've all gathered here as is your habit on each tenday of the month. A chance to catch up, trade stories, and play a few games of cards that Speaks with Dead wins more often than not.

Sitra Mor slides down in his chair slightly and closes his eyes as sweat runs down and frames his face. He breathes deeply of the humid air and drums his fingers on the table. "I can nearly chew the air." He licks his lips and watches the Asreelm makes their rounds around the room.

Batri stretches his corded neck from side to side releasing a series of pops and cracks.  “This is the one thing that makes me miss home, but it is definitely the only thing.”

He mops his smooth brow with his sleeve exposing the tattoos on his arm, a series of stylized animals that look like they would be more appropriate on ancient pottery.  The sheen of his now slicked pate enhances the appearance of the spirals of thin lines inked on the top and sides of his head.  “Anyway, that merchant says he will give me five to rough up some of his competition...  Fifteen if I make him never able to work again.  So I say to him fifteens the going rate for that to begin with and more like seventy five for something more severe, but I also say I’m not going to hurt the guy for him.  Scare maybe, but hurt no.  Anyway,  he agrees and holds out fifteen silver.  Gods damned silver?  I was talking gold.  Anyway, slapped it out of his had right there and told him to get stuffed.  Went to the guy he wanted me to roust and sold him the information about his competitor for five, gold this time.   He shakes his coin purse creating a clinking noise.  “Offered more if I went back and got rough, but I said no.  Anyway, hope none of you need any tack for horses cause I hear someone else was willing to be rough.  Very rough.”

He smiles, shaking his head at the foolish merchant. “Anyone else have an exciting week?”

Speaks With Ghosts irritatedly throws her current hand away before looking at Batri shrewdly.  How long you been in town for, again?   There's always some young gutter rat looking to do bloodwork for half.  Though they tend to end up facedown back in the gutter pretty quick.  No one pays top gold for the rough stuff anymore.  It's been a slow week for me.  Unless you count that working girl who asked me to take care of a punter who roughed her up.  But that was more of a public service.

From the vantage of the crowds edge you're able to see what looks like a crippled woman dragging herself through the mud and rain, she keeps repeating something over and over again, but it's more of a gurgle and choking, wherever she looks the crowd recoils and when she looks your direction you learn why.

Her eyes are each the size of an apple, bulging from their sockets, the rest of her features are similarly grotesque, as if a child found her mothers makeup and it went horribly wrong. Her nude form is covered in twisted tattoos that seem to move of their own accord as she claws her way along, her legs dragging behind her.

You make your way past ancient burned timber and rubble into the first floor of what must have been a shop of some sort. The top floors of the buildings next to it having crashed down into it.

While it does provide some cover from the downpour, the water has pooled up to about ankle height before finding freedom through holes in the walls.

The feel is reminiscent to being in a cave behind a waterfall, almost pleasant if not for the smell of mold and mildew.

The four of you head back to the Last Mistake, when you reach the street again, it appears that the militia has arrived wile you were searching the alleyway. Three militiamen stand near the corpse keeping the crowd away. The crowd itself, has thinned out now that the drama has played itself out. Two more people are approaching with a hand cart, several bodies are already stacked on it.

The mood in the Last Mistake has become much more somber, but the drinks still flow and the out of tune harpsichord still plays, if a bit less enthusiastically.

Most people are keeping to themselves and conversations are hushed. The supernatural implications of the corpse outside is settling in.

Corpse and a shitty harpsicord player.  Can today get worse?  Beuren relates to the others what he notes about the black eye make up and the guys with the cart.
I think it is simple.  Do we shut our pie holes or do we figure out what happened with the girl.

Okay, here is what I have figured out so far. Dead girl.  In case you didn't notice, the guys with hand cart have black schmutz on their eyelids. I would guess they are from the elladani tribe; Glil. Those guys handle the burial of elladani. They are not common around here.

Following the impetuous Beuren from the Last Mistake and through the streets to the Sunset Docks, the intrepid band of investigators ruminate on their clues to the mysterious death of a stranger. Something inside them seems drawn to solve her murder and what twisted soul would do such a thing to another person.

As the sun sets to the west, the group follows it, winding through the West District until they bear witness to the lights of the Sunset Docks, the streets growing brighter as if in mockery of Morgald and his ownership of the daylight. No lanternbearers can be seen on the streets of the docks, but the street lights glow brightly despite their absence. Mystic runes and animated illusions glow and dance above the doors or within the windows of the various dens of inequity.

Street stalls and wandering food sellers shout out the quality of their wares. Purveyors of the oldest trade in the world strut and pose to show off their best assets. Sailors, freshly ashore from the merchant vessels in the bay, set off to lose their pay in any number of ways. Even thought the docks, themselves, have only just opened the bouncers of several taverns have already cast out the early drunks and troublemakers, tossing them into the streets like so much garbage.

Speaks With Ghosts points out a likely venue to begin asking about Ava Maihi (Passive Insight Success) and the group make their way inside a tavern called The Pirate's Chalice. The room is heavy with smoke, the center of the room is a stage where several young, veil draped, dancers sway a serpentine dance that can be understandably called sensual. Along the opposite wall the floors are covered in pillows and cushions of various sizes, colors and textures. nearly a dozen patrons are sprawled on them, smoking long metal pipes and barely conscious.

Small tables with no more than three chairs each are scattered across the rest of the tavern, nearly half of which are occupied by foreigner sailors and merchants, many seem to be haggling out business arrangements. Details are difficult to make out in the poorly lit tavern, blue and white orbs float above the stage offering the only light beyond the embers used to light the pipes in the back of the tavern.

Batri nudges Beuren towards a table that has good line of sight. Once seated a small, pudgy man in a thin vest and baggy pants, arrives and takes your orders. Beuren begins to ask the man about Ava Maihi, his nervousness gets the better of the him (Failed Persuasion Check) and he blurts out "Tell me where Ava Maihi is?" the man looks at the philosopher with long suffering patience, Sitra Mor interrupts, apologizing for Beuren and quickly asking a few pointed questions (Investigation Check Success). The proprietor relaxes a bit more and informs Sitra that Ava Maihi is the name of a heroine from an old Elladani tale. Said to be the most beautiful woman in the history of world, she died pursuing ways to make herself even more beautiful instead.

Beuren, in a flash of insight, continues on as the naive tourist, indicating that he had heard of a woman with such a name was here and that she offered...services...for the right price (Insight and Performance Check Success). The proprietor admits he has never heard of such a woman but mentions the name of a woman who may have what he's looking for, Diyosa. He provides directions to her establishment before leaving the table to take the orders of actual paying customers.

Beuren recognizes the name, she was a student of Orcor San Chugem Ava Dyaku, the same mentor he is currently hiding from. She ran a brothel that Dyaku would use to acquire new students. For all he knows she is still one of his students.

Where to now?

You head out through the Sunset Docks eventually finding the rundown townhouse that Diyosa uses as her brothel. A traditional red lamp hangs next to what is left of a door that swings open and closed as the wind gusts. Inside can be heard the sounds of customers and hosts doing what passes for business here.

On the trip here, Batri decided that Beuren should wait outside if he has no intentions of being noticed by Diyosa. Beuren's attempt to reassure the courier that he could be an asset quickly dissipates as he attempts to use a disguise kit he clearly has no idea of how to use (Critical Fail Performance Check).

The skies open up once more, dumping torrential rain on you as you make your way back to the Last Mistake. Along the way, you begin to notice that Speaks With Wolves is acting increasingly odd. She hovers on every suggestion and idea anyone brings up as if the concept were new, exciting and quite possibly the greatest idea that has ever been voiced. When she isn't lauding the perfection of the last discussion, she is quite literally drifting off to sleep as she walks.

Her condition doesn't improve at all by the time you reach the street out front of the tavern. The downpour continues and it seems that continuing on with Speaks would likely make everything more difficult. Something she wholeheartedly agrees with, although she can't remember where she was staying and leaving her to sleep it off in the tavern is the best idea ever, but not as good as the other idea of taking her with you as you search, or the even better idea of taking her to her childhood home to sleep. You guys are so amazing and brilliant with all of these amazing ideas.

Sitra takes a close look at her as best he can in the rain and determines that she is far more than just drunk, she has definitely taken some sort of drug or has been drugged (Medicine Check Successful).
