Your character is a soldier in the Royal Border Regiment. The Regiment is tasked with securing the Northern border, a mountain chain beyond which live the wild tribes, orcs and other creatures. Troopers in the Regiment are not frontline heavy infantry, they are light skirmishers suited for small scale fights, scouting and recon missions. It’s not glamorous like the King’s Own Lancers, but it is honest soldiering.

All PCs will be members of Phoenix Squad, and will be Troopers (Privates) under the command of Sergeant Hadrig Westergaard. When creating your PC please reflect that your primary purpose is soldiering, and create the character with that in mind.

Allowable races - all PCs will be human and male. Racial variants are allowed but they won’t impact upon game play.

Allowable classes - as you are a squad of soldiers this will be limited to reflect that.

Fighter
Barbarian
Rogue
Spell-less Ranger Variant (from Unearthed Arcana)
Cleric (only one permitted) - effectively the squad medic, not a priest
Sorcerer or Wizard (only one permitted) - effectively the squad battlemage

Backgrounds - Most backgrounds from books listed below are allowed, although some clearly won’t be suitable. Please don’t feel obliged to take Soldier. If in doubt, ask and we can discuss it.

Stats - use 27 point for stat build, min 8 max 15 before racial adjustments.

Level - all PCs will start at level 2. Levelling up will be episodic, not via XP.

Hit Points - max HP at level 1. For level 2+ please roll with Advantage.

Starting equipment - see Equipment entry below.

Personality Traits, Ideals, Bonds & Flaws - You can roll randomly, choose an appropriate one or make up your own, it’s up to you.

Alignment - you are soldiers, but aren’t necessarily nice people. No Chaotic or Evil, but any other combinations allowed.

Height & Weight - you can choose or roll randomly, whichever you prefer.

Each squad member will have the following on them. Proficiency rules still apply.

Uniform - dark green tunic and trousers, leather belt, brown cloak and brown leather boots, plus underclothes and socks

Backpack:
- Spare socks/underclothes
- Bedroll
- Blanket
- Mess kit
- Waterskin x2
- Trail rations x5
- Torch x5
- Tinderbox
- Sack
- Whetstone

Weapon options (select ONE of these options):
- Choose one weapon from Melee List A. Then add a shield and/or an item from Thrown Weapon List if desired.
- Choose one weapon from Melee List B. Then add an item from Thrown Weapon List if desired.
- Choose one weapon from Melee List A. Then add a shortbow and quiver of 30 arrows.

Melee List A - Handaxe, Mace, Battleaxe, Longsword, Shortsword, Warhammer, War Pick, Dagger
Melee List B - Spear, Quarterstaff, Greataxe
Thrown Weapon - Throwing Axe x2 (on your belt), Throwing Knife x4 (on chest bandolier), Dart x8 (on chest bandolier)

Magic Users will also have spellbooks and all spell components as required.
If proficient, any character may choose to have a Herbalism Kit or Thieves Tools.

The squad will have some equipment to carry between them. You can decide what you want to carry, and the rest I will distribute evenly between PCs and NPCs.
