Story Points

Story Points

The goal of the campaign is to come together and create a vibrant, detailed, living story that evolves and adapts in real time based upon the PC’s choices and actions.  The story will grow in game session as well as out, through session recaps written in the voice of the characters.  Hopefully, at the end of the campaign, we will have the same story experienced from all character’s perspectives each with a different agenda, priorities and biases. In addition, this will provide each PC a chance to think like their character, improving the chance they will think/act like their character in the session, creating a more realistic and unique story.  As an incentive to create the session recaps, the DM will reward the PCs with Story Points for each recap.

Story Points are collected in pools, a personal pool and a party pool.  When the DM rewards a PC with Story Points (the typical range is 1-2 per recap) they are accumulated in each PC’s personal pool.  A PC, whenever they desire, can transfer any or all Story Points in their personal pool to the party pool.  They may also pull them back at any time.

Note #1:   Story points will be given privately to the player and the player is not required at any time to disclose the number of points issued with the rest of the group, if they don’t desire to do so.  This will allow individual players who have racked up a lot of story points through thorough recaps, the opportunity to use them when they would like.  However, all transfers between the party pool and personal pool will be made public.

A Story Point can be used to purchase positive in game mechanics, such as using one story point to reroll a missed attack.  A PC can spend any or all of the available Points at any time, with the DM’s discretion and a vote from the party.  The available points include the points in your personal pool and all of the points contributed by all of the PCs to the party pool.  To use any of the points from the party pool, a simple majority vote is sufficient to let the player use the desired Story Points.

Note #2: Even PCs who have not contributed to the party pool may use points from the party pool, as long as they receive the simple majority vote.

The purpose of the Story Points is to reward players for delving deep into the mind of their characters and who enrich the story for the benefit of the group as a whole, as well as the campaign.  In addition, we want you all to realize your potential as “Heroes” and stars of the story.  We should be able to recreate or imitate any memorable scene from a movie or book by spending Story Points such as making sure your arrow hits or when pulling off something unexpected such as dodging an arrow at the last second that might put you down for good.  We are trying to make a story that is exciting and rewarding both while it is being played and after.  Most importantly though, you shouldn’t feel like you need to RELY on story points to do memorable acts, they can be done ALL the time, regardless of the story points.  We don’t want you to feel restricted by the rules...don’t let them confine you to just your powers or skills.

If you have a cool idea in your head, just go with it and we’ll all figure out a way to make the rules fit into our story.  The story points are just a means to an end.  Players should be saying, I want to do THIS and I want to use a story point so that I have a better chance at succeeding at THIS.

Note #3:  Everyone will have access to the party pool; even if they have not completed a recap, because anyone can be in the best position to do something cool at any given time and we don’t want to limit our ability to make a great story.  Again, a majority rule allows a player to use the public pool points.  Once spent, the points are gone from the pool.  Story Points are available as soon as awarded.

The list below is not all inclusive and is meant to represent common purchases and act as a gauge for the cost of the action you want to take.  Please provide more examples and we can determine the best # of story points needed to utilize it.

1 Story Point (SP):
  •   Gain advantage on your next roll, with a +2 SP bonus to the roll.
  •   Automatically save against one condition that a save can end, at the beginning of your next turn.
  •   Move Double speed as 1 Move action.
  •   Subtract 1 target from a spell. (remove an ally from the effects of a burst/blast/cone affect, 1SP for each ally removed)

2 Story Points (SP):
  •   Change the shape/range of any power (i.e. Changing melee to ranged 10 one creature, or blast to burst, burst to cone, etc….
  •   Change (not add) the keyword type (and resulting damage type) of any power. (i.e. My fireball is now a Radiant-ball or Acid-ball) If the power has multiple keywords, you can choose to change one.
  •   Create your own luck – Level 1 (Turn an enemy’s successful attack against you into a glancing blow, reducing the damage by 2d6.)

3 Story Points (SP):
  •   Get an extra full attack action this round and use immediately, with a +2 bonus to the first attack.
  •   Gain a “feat like” or weapon ability for the encounter, such as Brutal 2 or improved initiative.
  •   Create your own luck – Level 2 (Propose a change in the story and let the DM adjudicate.  For example, propose a missed attack a round or two ago weakened the rope supporting the chandelier and this round, during the Boss’s turn, it snaps and crashes down.)

4 Story Points (SP):
  •   Treat one roll as a natural 20 and maximize ALL dice, including bonus for high CRIT and magic weapons.
  •   Maximize the damage of one Spell. (you must still roll to hit each target, as applicable)
  •   Add one target to any Spell or Attack.
  •   Increase the blast/burst/cone size of a spell by 1.
