There were familiar scents, but they were more chemical and technological than people-related.  The truck went on for a long time-- it was headed to the outer bounds of the city, from the looks of things.

"I'm probably going to get some answers, just not a ride back home," Zoey thought as she clung to the top of the truck.

The truck was turning down a dark, unlabeled, unlit road, and was coming up on a low building of some kind that had no exterior lights at all.

Zoey stayed on the truck to see what the people would do.

They appeared to be unloading the truck, hastily, while getting shouted at to keep the gear out of the rain as much as possible.

Zoey leapt down from the truck and tried sneaking inside.

No one saw her...

...whoever these people were, they were assembling an amazing collection of strange science devices.  Not using them, as yet.  Just gathering them.

Zoey went to see what else the building had. Were these people not connected to the organization that mutated her?

There were a lot of other machines and... computers?  Many different kinds.  Robots that didn't move, too.

And guards.  Lots of guards.

Stealth check

Robots were a weird addition.

The guards were easy enough to avoid, and that left... this.  A warehouse of strange electronic equipment.  Which was strange enough, but some of it was familiar... but not all of it.  It didn't look like it had the same purpose, and a lot of it showed signs of having been created by improvisation and adapting other parts, and it was all so random.

Zoey went looking for a scientist to question.

It was hard to be sure which ones were scientists, but there was a cluster of some kind of technicians ahead, looking over the machines, and doing something with instruments.  They clearly had no idea Zoey was there.

Drawing her sword, Zoey tried to take down two of them to interrogate the third.

The two fell without a sound; the third stared up at Zoey in terror.

"W-who are you?" he stammered.

Zoey flipped her sword around and put the blade to the man's throat.

"Who are you people and why are you stealing all this gear?" she asked.

"...hey, I don't know who's in charge," the man said.  "I think you're asking for a lot of trouble, though.  They're gathering a bunch of secret, high-tech stuff, and they already have a lot.  Sooner or later, they're going to find you if you cause trouble here."
