God damn...what the hell was that?  Why are my ears wringing?  That hurt...a little.  Smoke...noise...da hell.  That is the first thing that goes through your head as shake off the rubble and shock.

"WHERE IS HE?"

Darren shakes himself as he gets to his feet.  He looks around, wiggling a finger first in one ear, then in the other to clear the ringing.  Okay.  Where am I, and what the Hell happened?. He thinks to himself.  Whatever it was, he most definitely hadn't been prepared for this.  Noone goes to work thinking something's going to explode.  Or whatever just happened.

The wall of the building is in shambles.  It was one of the walls to the conference building.  It had been a long drive south to the convention center, but Tinley Park seemed nice and this was not expected.  You were simply walking on the sidewalk to the entrance when the wall exploded.  You are not the only person bowled over by this and there are many hurt.

"WHERE IS HE?  I SMELL HIM!!"

The yelling is a large beast of a man (wererat?).  He stands almost seven feet tall, has the beastly look of a half-man/half-rat, and a slight small (you didn't smell it before, but there is a musky smell in the air now).  He is definitely nothing you have ever seen before.

Darren looks around quickly, seeing if there is anyone he can help.  His mind working furiously.  What is that creature?  And who is he looking for?. He thinks to himself.  "How do I get the injured out of here?. As he thinks, and assessed the situation, he quickly dials 911.  He tries to avoid notice as he moves through the dust calculating exist routes, assessing the injured, and helping those who need it most.

You are able to move way and dial the phone as the 'rat-man' is sniffing the air.  "YOU DO NOT MAKE FUN OF RATLIN' AND LEAVE!  YOU ARE SO SMALL AND SMELL SQUISHY!  WHERE  ARE...AHHH...THERE YOU ARE!!"  The rat-man (Ratling?) turns his focus, his nose, to a man raising out of the rubble.

"Son of a bitch." comes from the man getting free of the rubble.

People are leaving the area fast.  There is screaming and yelling.  There are a few people caught in the rubble explosion (it looks like three).  Squealing tires adds to the noise.

"Tinley Park Convention Center, Main Entrance.". He says into the phone, when the 911 operator answers.  "There's been an exsplosion, three people seriously injured.  several others injured as well.  Send police and ambulances.". He continues.  Then says loudly enough for Ratlin to hear clearly "THERE'S A RAMPAGING RAT-MAN THAT SMELLS LIKE A SEWER." . He says, just before he hangs up the phone, and quickly puts it back in his zippered case.

The rat-man flashed you a look and takes a long sniff, "Him first...then you.

He turns back to the man in leathers, "You're not so big now, are you?  hehehe"

In a south side accent, "Ain't the size of the dog flee bag.  You do have be flat-footed currently tho.  WANA GET OVER HERE FASTER."

Ratling rubs his hands as he takes a step closer, "Oh...I'm coming squishy."

"Seems you are more interested in hurting innocents, and people running away.  Are you afraid to face someone standing?". Darren says, trying to gain and keep Ratlins' focus.  His suit dusty from the exsplosion, and possessing a few new tears from the shards of wall.  Overall though, he presents the appearance of a refined professor chiding someone for rude behavior.

As you talk, you do get Ratling's attention; he hisses and steps toward you.  <HASSSSSSSSHHHHHHH>  But he is taken surprised by the man in leathers.

Un-prompted, he speaks up, "Innocents...that is funny."  As he is talking a racing bike comes around and through the cars in the lot and flips into the air.  As it flips, it morphs into a robot.  It comes to ground in a low stance with a stubby riffle against its right shoulder.  The man in leathers puts his hands out and a pair of handguns (oddly shaped...some lights?) land in his hands.  He drops to a knee.  "The handguns.  Really?  Damn it."  There is some beeps, clicks and a <shrug> from the robot.

"Take your fight away from these people.". He admonishes both of them sternly.  "They have no part in your quarrel.  Go somewhere void of people and kill each other there.". His voice is calm, but firm. Like a professor dealing with argumentative children.

There is a number of clicks and beeps heard after you talk.  "I don't know who the fuck that is.  Hey...who the hell are you and tell the rat that!"

Ratling seems a little disturbed with the conversation and three-way of people. <eeeerrrrr> His eyes are darting between the parties.

I am telling Both of you that.. He replies, his voice an even and stern tone.  "As for who I am.  I am Doctor Rose.". He continues speaking, as he surreptitiously extends the non-combat time that the two assailants are on the scene, and not fighting.  "Manners would dictate that you each introduce yourself.  Now.". He says firmly, with all the authority if a displeased, and disappointed teacher addressing two recalcitrant students.

You note some true confusion on Ratling's face.  He is giving 'Dr. Rose' and odd look.  He shifts a little toward him, "Ratling?" he says...with a confused tone.

"Get the good school principal here, will ya.  I'm so glad he is here."  There are some more beeps and clicks.  "I know right...like he some how he really matters in this mess and is more than just in danger here."

Neither the robot or the man in leathers has moved their focus from Ratling.  Their guns are still trained on 'him'.  There are a few more clicks, buzzes, and pops heard.

"Good.". He replies to Ratlins'.  "Now, Mr. Ratlings'.  Clear the rumble from the sidewalk.  Without touching anyone else.". His statement is firm, like a principle assigning the first disciplinary task, and expecting it to be promptly and completely obeyed.". Then, his turns his gaze to the leather clad biker and his robot, without removing his attention from Ratling.  "Put your guns away, and go help Mr. Ratling clear the sidewalk of ruble, without touch anyone.". His tone remains firm, and disciplinary.

Darren squares his shoulders, and walks straight up to the foolish young man.  Placing his chest directly I from of the pistols, and leveling an unyielding gaze at the poor boy.  "And I was absolutely serious about you puting those guns away.  Now.". He tone brooks absolutely no denial, and implies that they will be taken if not immediately dropped.  "You will Not be endangering any innocent parties with your reckless behavior.". His tone shifts briefly to address Ratling, but his eyes never leave the young man.  Ratling.  I said to clean the ruble from the sidewalk."

"Da fuck!  ARE YOU AND IDIOT!!!"  The robot takes two steps to the right (away from you) and starts to cycle between pointing at you and pointing at Ratling.  The clicking and beeps the robot was making speed up and increase in volume.  "No...he ain't listen and he isn't smart."

"YES!!!"

The robot shifts toward Ratling and it sounds like the clicks and beeps almost say 'incoming. gun free.'

You note that the handguns being held by the man in leathers seem to be on a .45 frame, but the slide is solid and the rear seems to have a row of black batteries (?) in a semi-circle. The muzzle is longer and vented.

Now that you are closer you would totally say the robot is a human sized transformer (Cogman from that horrible movie).  It is holding a P-90 against its should that has many of the same changes as the handguns.

Working out how best to do combat in PbP, so we may have a few hiccups.  Please bear with me.

Ratling is incredibly fast and jumps the short distance is upon the robot within seconds.  His claws hit home, but only make a horrible noise on the metal plate of the robots chest.  "yeeaahhhhhhaaaarrrrr"

Robot Intentions - firing a round into Ratling.
"Leathers" Intentions - Thrust kick in your chest and one quick right handed shot at Ratling.

Your move?

Darren intends to sweep "leathers" arms, disarming him of his pistols with one hand.  With the other, he intends to knock "leathers" into the robot to block the robots shot.  He will currently pull back on his super strength, using only as much force as an Olympic power lifter would possess.  His super strength is not an activated power, it's always part of him, he's just not striking with his full force.

[OOC: What you're doing is a tactic Superman is noted for in the old Superman Sourcebook. While he had Str 25, he would regularly start using 12 APs of Strength.]

( Darren does not want to reveal his super powers in this guise.  But feels that he has to do something to protect the populace.  Also, he does not want to destroy "Leathers", and since he can lift 200 tons, using his full strength could possibly do that.)

[OOC] To be clear, you are NOT pulling a punch (page 147), but using a strength of 3-4 (700 lbs.)?  I'm not sure how best to do that....

Can we use the rules for Pulling a Punch, to create the same effect?

[OOC: Shield literally uses less than his full strength for his EV. As I noted, the precedent for this is Superman who would do this as noted in the Superman Sourcebook.
All Pulling a Punch will do is prevent Knockback if you get a phenomenal roll, but that is still limited by Strength and the mass of who or what you smack.
You do not have to go full force unless you have a Limitation or Drawback that says you do.
So yes, he can choose to only use 4 APs of Strength. Someone might notice he isn't really exerting himself though. To look like he's doing otherwise would require Artist (Actor).]

Just for reference, attack number #1 has a total of 28.  You would add the two rolls together.  That is a great roll.  Please do list the individual rolls as you did, it helps me.

Now...on the attack.  Your sweep is fine and works.  It is a success for a maneuver that is non-book, but that is fine.  But, your throw, as you have held yourself from using your full strength, is not successful.

I didn't realize how rusty I am at this...sheesh.  It has been a while.

Shield has no problem sweeping the guns to the left as he physically interceded between 'Leathers' and Ratling.  As you grab his wrist to throw him, you find him quick and a little strong than expected.

His kick to your chest is quick, very strong and trained, but has no affect on you.  "Son of a bitch...."

<phhhtt, phhttt, phhtt>  Three rapid shots come from the robot at Ratling.  With each shot, flames exit the muzzle of the gun on the sides and it looks like Ratling is hit by three invisible 'rounds'.  Ratling makes a noise as the 'waves'...'rounds' hit him.

Robot Intentions - Trying to make a little space between him and Ratling, he goes to push (throw) Ratling.

Darren pretends to get kicked back as he rolls with the kick.  First striking at leathers, the attempting to throw him.  All the while trying to keep him away from the guns on the ground, and pretend to be no more than a normal human.

Ratling swings and gets a claw under the robot's chin and snaps it head back.  There are a few sparks as the robot tries to keep its footing; you can tell it is damaged.  The robot is then hit by 'Leathers'.  "You dick!"  The two end in a pile of limbs about 8 yards away from the two of you, who are very close.

"You are in my way.  I want him, but you...skrreeeee!"

He lashes out at you with his claws.  He is not holding back.  The claws are an inch long on each finger.

Darren rolls with the strike, his arm lashing out in an attempt to throw Ratling on top Leathers and Robot.

'Leathers' and the robot stand up and look over at the fight.  They still have their guns out; the robot has it to its shoulder and 'Leathers' just has them at his side.  "How's it going hero boy?"

Changing his position as Ratling swings, his arms reach out to to grab Ratlings' wrist.  Using Ratlings' momentum, he guides it over his leg, attempting to toss Ratling straight into Leathers and Robot and knock them down too.

Ratling smiles as his claws get purchase on your skin and rake five long line along your chest, shredding your shirt (3 RAPs).  "Hurts don't it, strongman.  ahhhhh!"  'Leathers' and the robot, who were watching what was happening between you two, move slightly and watch Ratling pass.  Your success is more than you had hoped for and Ratling goes sailing across the parking lot quite far.  He does hit a car, and dent it well.

"Holy shittt!  Post-up!"  'Leathers' quickly drops to a knee and points both handguns at you.  "Who the hell are you?"  Robot is poised with his gun pointed a Ratling, in the distance.

'Leathers' takes off his helmet.  His skin is copper in hue and his hair is jet black and short.  His eyes look odd, but from this distance, you are unsure why.  "Tired of breathing in that thing.  And now it won't be in the way of my shot."  He is looking straight at you.

Until now, you had not realized it, but sirens can be heard and they will be here fast.

Darren smiles, as he takes out his phone and takes a picture of Leathers, as he walks calmly straight towards him.  "You will not endanger anyone else with your recklessness.". He states with calm determination, mentally prepared to dodge when Leathers pulls the trigger.  A few more moments, and the Police will be here.  I just need to hold his attention till then.. He thinks to himself, intent on preventing any further civilian harm.  Meanwhile his hand is busy send the picture of Leathers to the local police.

[OOC: Crap. I missed the damage was from Claws which are normally Killing Damage which takes longer to Recover from. If that's the case, you would have to wait 15 - 10 (Your APs of Regeneration) or 1 Minute while resting to make a Recovery Check. The base time for Bashing Recover is 10 APs or 1 hour reduced to 1 Turn by your Regeneration.
If it's Killing Damage, which will be a GM call based on the game's Genre Rules, you'll have to wait until after the fight to recover, but you most certainly will recover.]

If you do not mind me poking in, here is an additional explanation. If you are already aware of all of this, my apologies for wasting your time!

Taking 3 damage does not lower your Body score. You have both Body (your actual score) and your current body (health). Your health starts equal to starting Body. So, taking three damage, you are now at 6 current body (health), but your actual Body score is still 9, so you remain as resistant and bulletproof as ever.

You do have options on taking damage.
You can take it, and just hope to win the battle before you lose all current body (health), then worry about recovering and healing later. If you seem to be winning the fight, that is a perfectly acceptable decision.

Or you can use something called 'last ditch defense' to ignore the damage to you- in essence, you summon your inner reserves and shrug away the damage with a second wind. The cost to negate points of damage depends on the genre- generally, it is 1-3 hero points per point of damage negated.

Or you can use your regeneration during a fight, if it lasts long enough. There are two types of damage- bashing and killing. Bashing damage takes 10APs time to recover from, and killing takes 15APs to recover from. Regeneration reduces that amount, so subtracting, it is 0APs for bashing (which means you can use it every round) and 5APs for killing (which is 2 minutes, I believe, not 1 minute). But as Mindstrike said, this does use your dice action for the round. Claws, guns, knives, bombs, falling, etc. are usually killing combat, but that depends on genre. (Nearly any attack can be declared killing, but most default to bashing).

And if all else fails, and you go unconscious, heroes can generally spend 15 hero points on something called 'desperation recovery' to try to regain consciousness right then and there.

Claws are killing combat.  The guns used by 'Leathers' and the robot are force based (not killing).

Shield can change any of his actions after my last post as a roll is not due yet.

Please remember, I'll always go with 'more fun' and 'loose' over rules as far as PBP goes.  It can be hard enough keeping up, and interested without rules bogging things down.  That is not a rule (don't ask to play a 5th level character that rides a manticor in a 1st level game...yes, that was an actual request I had in a D&D game...'more fun' does not mean I'm going to be ridiculous).

Thanks for the heads up Mind strike.  I fixed the post. *L*. Don't need to use his full Strength yet, I'll keep it at less than half.

Ratling seems agitated and confused.  His ears are standing straight up and he is sniffing the air.  You can barely hear him talking to himself.  "Cops.  To many people with guns...."  He does not move from where he was beside the car.  The car has good dent in the door, but does not seem worse for wear.  The robot has moved a little to the left and is still trained on Ratling.  It buzzes and beeps.

As you were taking photos, he pelvis thrusts at you, but didn't flinch.  "No...he has no fucking clue, does he.  I thought the helmet would help you, but you're just too dense for that, ain't you 'muscles'.  You don't get it.  You're in over your skies.  Out of your weight class.  You have no idea who I am and how I'm not touchable by the likes of you.  You can shove that phone up your ass for all I care."

He isn't even pointing the guns at you any more.  They are just in his hands as he is talking; they are just an extension of his arms (a lot of body language).  Your swat, which is still stronger that him, knocks one of the guns to the ground (it isn't possible to get both).

He stands up bolt straight, with a crazy as smile on his face, "You seem me yet?  You know why I don't care about you yet?"  His arms are out to the side like he is going to chest bump you.

Now that you are this close, you realize his skin is not tanned, but copper tinged.  His eyes are a little bigger than a human's and have vertical slits.

He doesn't even fight and lets the gun go flying.  "Fame?  Oh...oh...you are clueless.  Holy shit you are so going to hate this in the end.  Wanta put cuffs on me too, Muscles.  That is what I'm going to call you from now on as that is all you are fuckin' good for.  Oh...my bad...'language'."  He says the last word in a high falsetto.  There is a sudden burst of clicks, beeps and chirps coming from the Robot.  "Oh no!  You better go get that!"

You see Ratling start to run at a good clip across the parking lot, toward the east (you are to the north of him by a 100 feet or so).

"The Police will be happy to cuff you.". Darren replied.  "I am certain there are several people who wish to speak with you.".  Not being super fast, Darren watches Ratling go.  He would find him later.  No sense loosing both to chase one.  "He will be apprehended later."

The police start to pull into the area from all sides.

The robot makes some clicks and whistles, and changes into a motorcycle and just starts to drive off zipping through the parking lot (fast...no rider), North-East-ish...which will take it off-road and through some green spaces before hitting a lightly populated area.

G Prime crosses his arms and just looks at Shield with a smirk on his face. "Gotcha bro.  Oh...and the cops won't be happy to deal with me and the mess in about two hours.  I won't even blame you for it.  This is a freebie."  He has a shit eating grin on his face.

"Terroristic threats will not help your situation.". Darren says, his voice firm.  He then turns towards the police, complying with their directives, but maintaining his rights as well.

OOC: You can describe, and I'll amend.  And, in two hours, Darren will be ready to move, and possibly assume his Alter Ego.  Depending upon what happens.

The police come into the area hard.  A few do head east in the general direction of the robot and Ratling.  The scene is chaos for a moment and fire/EMS hold until the police have things controlled.  You, G Prime, and anybody left in the area (which is few), are segregated away from each other.  G Prime has a few more police around him than you do.  His attitude and demeanor is helpful and accommodating, but you still hear him being smart.  He keeps looking at you and smiling.  Soon he is put into the back of a squad, but not handcuffed.  He is secluded.  They have searched him, collected the two 'guns', and a few things off of him.

By now, the fire and EMS are everywhere.  There are only a few hurt and it is from the initial explosion of the wall.  Inside, people were scared and hiding, but nobody was actually hurt.

Office Johnson, who is with you, asks you for your statement.  [OOC] Go ahead and give me a paragraph on that.

"I was walking to deliver a lecture at (insert museum, zoo, or college name) when the wall of (insert building name) exploded and threw me across the sidewalk.  G-Prime over there emerged with a robot and guns drawn, followed by a bipedal rat that called themselves Ratling.  I quickly assessed the wounded, and called 911, then attempted to hold their attention and keep them from harming anyone else till you could arrive.  They both physically assaulted me, and I was forced to defend myself.  Ratling ran (insert direction), while G-Prime eventually ceased aggressive action and you detain him.  G-Prime did threaten that in approximately two hours something would occurs that would make the police upset with him.". Darren gives his brief, factual statement to the Police.

Concern is on the face of the office as you go over what happened.  The wall to the Tinley Park Convention Center, where you talk was to be this afternoon, has a large hole and the office keeps looking at it.  While you are talking, you hear over the radio that the 'robot bike' and Ratling are at large.

"I'll need your best description of both the 'robot' and Ratling.  Did it identify itself as Ratling?  Who caused the hole in the wall?  How were you assaulted?  I do not see any bruising.  Are you hurt?"

When you make the remark about the 'two hours', he does ask for a Sargent to come over.  "Anything else you can give me on the two hours?"

"They identified themselves as Ratling.  I have sent pictures over to 911.  If you have a number I can send them to, I will send them there as well."  Darren responds.  I do not know who caused the explosion.  I was fortunate enough to avoid injury by luck.". Indicating his torn clothes, he continues.  I did recieved a cut from Ratling, but managed to deflect and avoid most of G-Primes' assault."
G-Primes' statement on the two hours was"Gotcha bro.  Oh...and the cops won't be happy to deal with me and the mess in about two hours.  I won't even blame you for it.  This is a freebie.""That is all I know about that.  I was to be delivering my lecture on the opposite side of that wall.  However, due to the damage and the crime scene it will have to with be rescheduled, or relocated.  Which would the Police advise?"

The police officer takes copious notes and listens to everything you say.  The sergeant watches you and watches the car where G Prime is being interviewed.  He seems to be saying freely.  "I don't know what will happen here yet, but we will have to have the building inspected and get it cleaned/sealed.  So you don't know who/what caused the explosion.  So the wall exploded out...you were out and G Prime was outside...Ratling came through the hole, inside to out.  Is that correct?"

Over the radio, which the officer has been adjusting up and down to pay attention to communications, you hear "Concealed carry permit check needed."

"I do not know if G-Prime was inside or outside of the building.  He was getting up from the rubble when I first saw him.  Ratling came through the wall chasing him.  He had "made fun of " Ratling, and Ratling was angry.". Darren replied.  "I do not know who or what caused the explosion.  The robot with G-Prime is armed with some form of cannon, and can transform into a motorcycle."

The sergeant tells the office to check with any of the inside reports of when 'Ratling' was noticed and if anybody saw what started this in the first place.  "I can't see how something like that was running around inside the hall and not noticed.  And who the hell is goin' make fun of it, if it was."  The office keeps taking notes as the sergeant talks.

"Are you sure you don't need to be checked out?  The EMS are here and you'll need to sign or confirm for them anyway."  He is cool and controlled.  Not all of the police are that way right now.

The officer speaks up, "You were outside and never made it inside, correct?  Where is your car?  And who can confirm your attendance?"

There are a few more questions, but they slow down and eventually allow you to go, once you confirm that don't need any additional attention.  This has taken about 30 minutes or so.  As you look around, you see the following things;
- G Prime is still in a police cruiser and handcuffed.  He is not causing any issues.
- There are now news trucks setting up outside the police zone.
- Ratling nor the robot return to the area.  Listening in to talk gives you the impression that a search is still on-going.
- There is property damage, but only minor injuries (the worst sounds like a broken leg that occurred when the wall exploded out).

"Apparently G-Prime made fun of him." Darren replied to the officer.  "Thank you officer.  I will see the EMTs next.". He continues.  "I never made it inside the building.  My lecture is scheduled with the Convention Center, you can confirm that with them.  I took public transit to station, then walked.". After the questions are done, Darren texts his host to determine whether the lecture should be rescheduled or relocated.  He walks over to the EMTs, allowing them to examine him briefly, before declining further care.  Once free of the investigation, and the host responds, he sends a text to the adherents updating them in brief on the situation of the lecture.

You receive confirmation that all lectures have been cancelled for the day as the building inspector is required to look at the wall.

The EMT finds nothing wrong with you, but still gets your explicit denial of need noted.

The number of police has increase in the time you've been here.  The SWAT Team stands down.  The fire department is there hosing down the concrete and area to control the dust.  G Prime is driven away in the squad car.  He gives no resistance.  The search in the adjoining area does not discover the robot or Ratling.

You have no reason to believe the police think you are any more than a bystander in this situation.  They do thank you for your help and calm head.

"It's what Joe would have done."  He responds to the police.  Then he walks away, headed towards the shopping district.  Taking a train back towards the geographical center of the city.  There, he sits at the station for a few hours, waiting on G-Primes' threat.  This time, he would find a place to hide and assume his Alter Ego.  Neither G-Prime, his associates, nor Ratling were getting away with harming innocent people this time.

G Prime is more of an ass here than he was way back (my character from the 80's).  Then he would have been like working with Axil Rose; needy, swearing, drinking, smoking (cigars) and superior (a.k.a. Guy Gardner).  So my comment from a few posts back was appropriate.  Now, with some things that have happened, he has gotten worse.  :)  He is an anti-hero.  I will add to the description of him.

Note, You are ABSOLUTELY stronger tho....

The news about the incident is extensive (video, on scene reports, helicopter footage), but they don't give names or numbers yet.  They are reporting a 'fight between meta-humans' and 'few people hurt with none seriously'.  The police have not done a full news conference by the time you are downtown and sitting.  They have warned people about reporting 'anything strange' and 'not to approach any feral animals'.

Sitting there, you have some time to think and remember a few items about G Prime from back when he was with the Northern Guardians.
- He never fit in fully, but was a useful member of the team.
- When defending everyone from an attack on their sea platform, he was the last man standing.  There had been robots and a cyborg that had attacked.  He used deadly force to stop cyborg (some points desperation and some points 'law of the jungle' attitude), killing it.
- He is an alien and lets people know he isn't human (part of his superiority complex...or if alien it isn't a complex, but fact?).
- He was a martial expert, weapons expert and extreme pilot (his capacity on the team centered around various weapons, vehicles and things he built/repaired).
