Chapter Four: The Temple of Beltza Atarabi

For whatever Thar may be, he is effective.  In almost no time, he has you set up with horses, a map to the site, and provisions for the trip (food, drink, tents).   The travel to the site is fairly pleasant, getting out of the city and following a road and then making for the rugged coastline.  It has the feeling of a holiday outing.  By the end of the first day, you arrive at the coastline and find there an abandoned campsite just in from the coast cliffs.  From there, you can hear the water crashing on the forty to fifty foot cliffs just beyond the camp.   In the dying rays of the sunlight, you investigate the cliffs and find where a rope ladder has been attached and lays coiled at the top of a sheer wall.  The smell of sea water is strong and the wind blows strongly off the coast.  It is here, some mid way down that wall, they the temple/cave entrance is supposed to be.

Chapter Four: The Temple of Beltza Atarabi

The basket saddle works wonders for Delta, who can't ride a horse, and she thanks Thar for his thoughtfulness. She strums lightly on her lute during the trip, and enjoys the vistas of the day.

The ocean is a particular treat, as she had never seen it before, and she is enraptured by the endless blue-grey beauty of its majesty. She studies it extra carefully, as she hopes to reproduce the image for her parent when next she visits. She hides the potential that they might not survive the adventure in a small pocket in the back of her mind.

When they arrive at their destination she asks Vala for help getting out of the box-saddle. Aware of the fact that straddling a horse was probably more strenuous that the way she had ridden, she defer to the others as to if they are ready to explore further now or if they needed to rest. If they do plan to rest, she starts preparing to cook dinner for them all.

Vala seemed particularly cheerful to be out and about in the outdoors. The tall warrioress is at ease on a horse and enjoys the the sea breeze through her hair and her ears. She's also more than happy to help her gnome friend out of her saddle.

"I'm happy to go in right away, though I admit the idea of Delta's cooking is very tempting."

Chapter Four: The Temple of Beltza Atarabi

Delta perks up at Vala's compliment, she does enjoy cooking and when her cooking is enjoyed, the pleasure more than double.

"Can someone tend to the horses? I don't know much about the beast, I doubt I can even get the saddle off without killing myself."

She is pleased to see that the rope is coiled up at the top, feeling that this might offer some security.

Once the fire is going, she starts dinner cooking, then takes some time sitting near the edge of the cliff, while practicing her arcane arts.

She will start by painting an image of the sea on the top of the cliff, about five feet wide, by four deep, of the ocean, with the sunset behind it. She will glance at the sea, then back to her image, trying to fill in the details. No birds, and no crashing of waves, but the blue grey of the sea with the reddish gold of the sky.

Once she is satisfied she will pull out her lute, and strum a tune reminiscent of the sounds of the sea. A minor key, slightly sad, to match the tone of the evening, with the occasional tweak of a string to mimic a sea birds call.

She will struggle to maintain it as long as she can, but eventually it wavers, and when it does it fades away.

Pleased with her efforts, she finishes the stew, gets out the plates, and serves it up to her companions. She will have a small cup of the Branch Farm cider with hers, though she assumes the others wish for something stronger.

Adventurers who live long enough to have such reflections, reflect on such a night as this. A strong campsite, comfortable tents, blazing fire, the ocean breeze and oceans sounds and smells, and fine food cooked up by Delta.  Fine cider, wine, and other spirits available around a warm fire with a tapestry of stars above.  With the wind and ocean noise, there is no need for stealth, so stories, songs, and music are all swept away safely into the natural world.  Sleep, when it comes, wraps itself snugly around each of the adventurers, and hugs them gently till the rays of morning wake them.

Chapter Four: The Temple of Beltza Atarabi

Odd dreams haunt the young gnome thru the night, not quite nightmares, but memorable in their oddity.

The party was riding thru the woods on a trip to the beach, but they were riding a single hippopotamus. A huge beast, with a bright colorful saddle for six, red and gold fabrics, tassels and bells. It's huge cavernous mouth held all their trucks and suitcases.

They came to a cliff that rose above them, leading up into a sky which looked like the ocean. Birds flew all upside down and caddy-wumpus, crying out in what sounded like barks and meows.

The party climbed to the top of the cliff, only to be frightened by a fearsome beast, a flying elephant! It's massive trunks bore a wide array of fruits, and it turned out friendly enough that they could snack on his juicy pears, grapes and oranges. He spoke delicate elvish, in a surprisingly high pitched voice, and told them all about the proper way to mulch spread mulch.

After they had bid the friendly pachyderm adieu, they were accosted by a massive creature, wings and head like a giant eagle, but with the body of a gorilla. It swooped down, and tried to pick up Delta in his massive finger like toes, but she stumbled, and upon hitting the ground, woke up.

"What a dream," she muttered to herself, grabbing a towel and heading for some private spot for her morning ablutions. Once she had finished, she started a porridge with apples bits in it, and cinnamon on top for breakfast, and a nice spot of hot tea for everyone who wants some.

Vala had spent the evening before watching Delta practice her illusions. The warrioress's eyes had been wide with amazement as she took in the sheer artistry her friend wove with her magic and at the end she applauded.

The following morning she was eager to tuck into the porridge. "Strange, I didn't have any dreams last night. Maybe I didn't eat enough," she says, taking an especially large helping of breakfast.

Chapter Four: The Temple of Beltza Atarabi

Janek makes his way down the rope ladder with relative ease.  The wind coming off the sea makes it impossible for him to hear much of anything other than wind and the occasional sea bird, but he figures that goes also to cover his own noise.  At the edge of the mouth of the cave, he leans down and takes a few quick looks inside.

While he can only see see the main part of the cave, not towards either side, he does see a large natural looking cave.  It is perhaps sixty feet deep, with two columns of stone going from floor to ceiling.  It has near the back, some natural looking terrace steps, that rise up making for a higher platform of perhaps 15 feet across, almost like a natural stage. All around there are small boulders that are covered in thick moss and tight grasses, the floor glistens with moisture.  The cave, being where it is, is probably always very damp.

Middle of the cave, there is a small fire and two hobgoblins are sitting, cooking fish. They do not notice they have company yet.

She looks around the cave, using the light of their fire. She pokes at the fish as well, risking a tiny nibble if they seem well cooked enough. She also looks about for any sign of hobgoblin spices or cooking utensils to see if there is anything she wants to add to her kit.

As you retrieve your thrown weapons, you check the bodies and the room.  It has been lived in, but hobgoblins, the floors are slick, and there are piles of waste in the back.  The hobs have two nice swords, surprisingly nice for hobgoblins, but their armor is poor, and they have little else other than a few silver pieces each.  They are over cooking some fish over a small fire.  The main remarkable thing in the room is a tunnel (not a hole), leading nearly straight down. Somewhat natural looking it obviously has hand and foot holds chiseled into one side, like a stone ladder of sorts.  The smell from below is not promising.

The spell seems to have worked -- but that conclusion depends on whether the hobgoblin has seen anyone in the party.

Tanyl, as the caster, will be most able to tell if the spell worked -- but to do so, must present himself and interact.  So he does.

Hands at his belt (conveniently near two daggers), Tanyl enters.  "Finally got here; can you help?" he asks in Hobgoblin.

Tense, Delta waited and watched, fingers crossed. She was concerned that there was only one human visible here, and she hoped both of the scholars they had been sent to fins were still alive.

As the daggers fly and swords are drawn, the hobgoblins move to action.  Two attack the approaching party, and two more spears come flying in from behind the party.  Through skill and luck and armor, none of these attacks find their marks.

Nearest to the bound human, two of the hobgoblins begin grappling with each other, taking them out of the combat.

With a shrug, Delta puts on her mask. Dwarfs are notoriously resistant to poisons and such, she figures he is the least likely to need such a thing anyway.

Did anyone ask the hobgoblin how to open the secret door? I know he showed us where it was, but it seems like we need a bit more.

The scholar replies, somewhat relieved "Jimma".

It takes Janek several minutes to figure out how to open the door, its not of dwarven design but he is impressed with the cleverness someone used to hide it in plain sight.

When he does open it, a waft of stale, moist air meets him.  Unpleasant but nothing he can't stomach. On the far side, a dark stairwell leading down, it is narrow, only 4 feet wide and descend sharply.

Chapter Four: The Temple of Beltza Atarabi

The rough hewn staircase descends many feet and by a dwarf's intuition, Janek guesses that when in ends in a ten foot wide corridor, they are just about level with sea.

The corridor goes forward at least 60 feet and is ten feet wide.  This is not rough hewn but carefully constructed and old.  The air is very moist, and the smell of the place seems to cling to you.  From the entry you can see about 30 feet on left way, there is a narrow gap, and about 60 feet, two alcoves with protuding statues.  Even from this distance you can see they mirror the death mistress statue from the level above.

All is quiet.

Janek moves carefully forward to the first small passage to the left.  It is narrow, like the stairs only wide enough for a single person at a time.  He can see it goes at least 40 or 50 feet and about middway, there is a pile of rocks partially blocking the passage.  His dwarvish knowledge tells him this was not a cave in, but someone piled them there as a barrier.  Oddly, they aren't that high, someone could scramble over them with relative ease.

This side passageway is even more moist and smells of the sea.

Moving carefully forward, you find a few steps down, leading to a large statue of the death goddess on the right.  There are two alcoves across from the steps that appear to have stone coffins in them.  The passage turns to the left and after a short space, opens into a very large hall with square pillars.  To the left, there is a cavern filled with water.  To the right, a wide set of three steps rises.

It to the right that you hear sounds of creatures moving about.

Delta's spell has an immediate reaction. With the sounds of hissing and scraping of scales, four troglodytes charge down the wide stairs and turn directly towards where the party is waiting.  Although partially hidden, the lizards have excellent vision and don't miss seeing you. Your efforts to hide to afford you first attacks.  These creatures are scaly, bony, and have sharp teeth and claws.  They wear no armor and carry no weapons, but fight like wild creatures.

Delta and Vala both land hard blows, staggering but not killing the lizards before them. Tanyl and Janek both use ranged weapons and also land telling blows, dropping the two already injured creatures. The remaining two hiss and in their anger a wave of putrid odor envelops the party.  Each also lands a minor bite on their opponents (2 hps to Vala and Delta).   Even as the smell washes over the party, more troglodytes swarm down the step moving to join the battle.

Re: Chapter Four: The Temple of Beltza Atarabi

Finding her accuracy diminishing, Delta misses yet again. She really didn't want to spend her lone spell at this point, but it seemed it might become necessary. She ponders an expeditious retreat, but realizes that she can't leave Vala behind.

OOC - Curious, there seems to be two Trogs left, and they got three hits, do they have multiple attacks?

As the last of the lizard trogs dies, the odor begins to lessen somewhat.  It is still awful but not lethal.  Delta searches the bodies and finds that they have little on them other than their weapons and a few rags of clothing.  A quick scouting from Tanyl finds two things of note. On the upper floor, an area that was clearly the trogs "nest', lots of cloth and sea grass is strewn about to create an area of bedding.  In the back of this is a locked iron chest.

As the others prepare to drag the dead to the water, they see the other other on the far side of the water on a ledge, he is unmoving and covered by a sheet.  Before you manage to toss any of the dead, the water at the shore ripples and splashes, and something peers up at you from the clear water.  Is it the Goddess of Death, truly, it certainly favors the statues!!

Well impressed by the goddess, Delta hopes that an attempt at friendly discourse might be the way to go.

"Hello, Goddess. May we talk?"

She starts with Common, then tries all of her other languages, hoping to spot a glimmer of understanding in her large eyes.

Keeping her distance from the water, Delta is quite unhappy with the fact that there seems no dry way top the man they still hope to rescue. Does the water seem to open to the sea?

OOC She speaks Common, dwarvish, gnome, halfling, goblin, kobold, and can also communicate with any burrowing mammal

Re: Chapter Four: The Temple of Beltza Atarabi

The goddess knows very little of the temple, she has only been in the pool and seen what she can see from that place.  It is her theory that her people, who migrate vast distances in the sea, probably used to visit these beaches, and long ago, the people who lived here may have thought them goddesses, even as the Trogs did.  The statues so resemble herself that she feels this might be the case.

Delta swims over to check out the scholar and finds him deeply asleep, magically so, she cannot wake him.

Vala with great difficulty is able to carry the "goddess" to the sea. She is so happy, she kisses the warrior on the cheek as she is placed into the water, and then in flash, swims away.  Vala sees her far offshore leaping above the water!

The chest isn't large, and it has a trap, a poison needle, but the Trogs smashed and beat the lid till it caved in.  Avoiding the lock altogether.  The chest is full of ancient gold coins with a rough shape of the goddesses head on it.  By size and weight, there are probably at least 500 of them.  They are probably worth more than just the gold in them, given their ancient nature.

Delta, with the help of the others, is able to get the scholar back into the main temple.

There does appear to be another alter below the water, but there are several of them around in the temple, while of historical value, not likely to yield much else.

ooc: congratulations, you have rescued the hostages, killed the enemies, and will increase your fame within the city, and your wealth as well.  I will calculate up the treasure found and experience points tomorrow and post the results.  For now, its just clean up work and returning to town triumphantly!

She offers a bowl of watered down stew to Janek in the hopes that it would settle him stomach after that foul encounter.

She had been tempted to try and save whatever part of the troglodytes had made them so odoriferous, but decided it wasn't worth the effort.

Picking up her lute, Delta starts plucking out a few tunes, trying to find a nice sound as she works on the lyrics to a new tune. Romance was not her forte, and she had no interest in making a tale about Vala into a comedy or a ghost story, so it was slow going.

Staring up at the statue, she tried to capture the creatures charisma, her strength, yet her vulnerability.

It was going to be a long time before it became anything really good, but it was a start.

"Tanyl, have you searched the place? Curious, did you get your necklace back?"
