OOC: Table Talk ONE

Howdy all.  Since we are starting at LVL 1 ... what's your thoughts?  I've got a lot of ideas spinning since I love 1st ed...

Initial Ideas:
  1) Bard, the long way to fame & fortune (Human Dual Classed F5/T6/B7+)
  2) Cleric/Assassin of Tymora, life and death - just a coin flip away (Half-orc C1/A1)
  3) Cleric/Magic-User of the Raven Queen, the dead stay dead (Half-elf C1/M1)
  4) Thief, the quickest way to fame & fortune (Elf T1)

OOC: Table Talk ONE

Hi Beta!

Those are some cool ideas. I'm trying to narrow my options down myself. Two leaders (at least at this point of the hundreds I've been considering) are a Half-Elf Thief/Magic-User (a charming scoundrel type who decided there were easier ways to make his fortune than studying dusty tomes for the rest of his life) and a human Fighter (a cynical, sardonic mercenary swordswoman stolen inspired by Kitiara in Dragonlance.)

That said an Assassin is an interesting idea. Would the group be okay with an Evil character?

Huh. Not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand it certainly makes it a lot easier to make an Assassin fit in a party. On the other hand having an Assassin be evil to start with adds a lot of flavour and makes it a bit more unique.

I have a question for those who have experience with Fighters this edition; is a lightly armoured 'nimble' Fighter with my highest score in Dexterity and deliberately avoiding heavy armour viable, or is that sacrificing too much of what makes the class work and I should look at Thief or Assassin instead? I like the idea of being skilled swordsman (or swordswoman) but I'm not really fond of the idea of clanking everywhere in heavy armour and playing someone with bulging muscles atop their muscles.

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

Nimble fighter is primary with Bow in 1e.  Fighter/Thief multi-class makes up for lighter armor with some added flexibility in a non-human race.  But generally, you can flavor yourself however you like in 1e and not worry too much about crunchy mechanics of later editions :)

I decided to run with Vala, a nimble bastard sword wielding human Fighter out to make money, make her name, recover a family heirloom and hopefully get rid of the generations of bad luck that have been haunting her family. :)

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

As the third to arrive, I'll see what Beta leans toward before settling.  I typically try to fill in the group's gaps, but as we get first dibs we will have lots of free reign.

I just want to try something other than a ranger.   I like rangers a lot, but I think branching out is a better idea.  That said, I'm bereft of ideas.  I have some things I'd like to try, but I have reservations.  I'd give a monk a whirl, but I wish they could at least get dex bonus to AC.  I'd give illusionist/thief a try because it's an interesting combo, but that would require being a gnome and having level limits.

I guess I could try pure magic user or pure cleric -- but as I said, I'll wait for Beta.  In the meantime, any thoughts/preferences are welcome.

I know what you mean by branching out. I love playing Saliq - and Illusionists are a lot of fun - but I wanted to try something different. Hence the Fighter gal. :)

A multiclass character could be very useful (I seriously considered it myself) but if you are worried about level limits I think every race are unlimited as Thieves. Also depending on your dice a human dual class character could be viable.

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

I'm encouraged by the history of long-running games and the prospect for leveling, which makes me excited to try a monk.  I'll see if the DM has any house rules/adjustments for them.  Many had house rules for monks because, like dex for ac.

Dragon Magazine had a variant that was good and fun (and more sensible), but I don't know if I can find that anywhere.

Maybe inspiration will strike . . . but hopefully soon.

DM Bard, are you willing to forego demi-human level limits?  If so, I'm interested in going Half-Elf Magic-user/Cleric ... Raven Queen as the Deity.

If all goes well, then I'll run with Qyn...a manic half-elf Cleric/Magic-user with an intimate connection to the Raven Queen who's seen the stuff of nightmares and lived to tell the tale.  Will his fate catch up with him before he's able to deal with it and survive, or will he fall victim to his "distractions" and never reach his full potential?

I'm fine with with ignoring race limits, I find them silly.  Whatever you develop just make sure there is a reason, or motivation, for them to join a party and adventure forth.

Sounds fun! :)

Vala Dragonsbane is a human fighter, the descendant of a long dead famous mercenary/adventurer/warlord whose ancestors have suffered from misfortune, cowardice and shame. Vala is definitely hoping to break that pattern and restore the Dragonsbane fortune and reputation!

Qyn is a recent inductee into the halls of the Raven Queen, but he has a depth of magic in his blood and ancestry.  It is said that his father was a great Wizard and his mother was an Arch Druid.  However, both are long dead as told in common stories.  Qyn hopes to prove himself, regardless what the stories say, as someone of legend.  All he has to do is survive long enough to do something of note.

Gamma if you are interested in a monk - and while I'm more familiar with the 5e version I think they are neat - I am sure there is plenty of room for East Asian type cultures on the map in the same way the Empire of the Shifting Sands covers the Near East and the Middle East.

(Don't want to step on your toes DM Bard just saying I'd be perfectly fine if you want to introduce a culture like that somewhere.)

GM Bard and I had a quick chat; he's cool with hit, but I've grown concerned about all the shortcomings of 1st edition monks, and I don't want to deluge him with "fixes" and house rules, and I don't have access to any of the fixes.

I've always wanted to play a thief that had some minor magic to help with the thieving.  Not to cast fireballs, but to do invisibilities, illusions/misdirections, escapes, that kind of thing.  I'm trying to figure out how to do it best.

There is actually a couple of kits exactly like that in The Complete Ninja's Handbook. The 'Shadow Walker' is a Ninja with various magical abilities and slightly weaker combat while the 'Shinobi Mage' and 'Shinobi Illusionist' are respectively Magic-Users and Illusionists with some Thief skills and a slightly reduced chance to learn spells by having their Intelligence count for a point or two lower.

Of course that is for 2nd edition unfortunately.

Good luck! :)

Don't overlook the possibility of the humble Half-Elven Thief/Magic-User. Yes Magic-Users aren't quite as good at trickery as Illusionists but you still get some nifty tricks like Audible Glamour. Just steering clear of destructive spells still leaves you some fun opportunities.

I may have to do that; rolls too low for dual classing.  And I didn't get the 17 needed to be a thief/illusionist. :(  In fact, I'm pretty darn ordinary.

Bad luck, though you did get an 18 (which I didn't!) Maybe a single class then?

I know it's not what you were looking for but a single class Thief does eventually get to read scrolls and has the fastest progression.

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

Page 39 of the DM Guide has the starting spell guide for MU's.

Read Magic is given,  then you roll 3 d10,  one for offensive, one defensive, and one misc. It lists the spells.  If you roll a 10 on any of those, you can choose within that group.  All MU's start with 4 spells in their book.  If you don't have the 1st Ed. DM Guide, just roll the d10's and I'll tell you what you got.

As for Skills, well, 1st Ed. / OSRIC don't use them.  However, they were a good innovation in later editions to fill in gaps in all those grey areas.  If you want to attempts something that is not covered by your class or race, etc.  Generally, I'll have you roll a D20 against the attribute that would most influence the attempt.  For your character sheets,  just list five things that given your background, you might be extra good at.  Vala's example, of gambling is a good one.  Maybe cooking.  Or Swimming,  Pretty general stuff, and it should have a reason from your past.   Those won't likely come into play that often.

Hey folks, sorry to be a bit slow on HOUSE RULES.  I inherited Stormhaven a LONG time ago, without any of those questions that come up during making a character.

Qyn, I'm going to use the conventional and typical, group meeting up at the local establishment ready to form the next great team beginning.  Tried and true. If the mages meet and want to trade spells I’m fine with it.

However, in 42 years of this game, 1st edition was my favorite but not always perfect.  Sorry if it feels restrictive but I don't mages regardless of their multi class can wear armor.  I'll allow up to leather armor, and beyond that only Elven Chain mail.

I am considering a gnome character, probably an illusionist. I was considering fighter illusionist, but the house rules for caster-fighters and their armor is a bit tighter than 1st E. RAW, so maybe not.

Curious if the DM is flexible with the multi-c;ass options for the race? I was thinking perhaps Illusionist-cleric or illusionist ranger.

That said, no big deal, single class sounds fine too...

Each character begins the game with a certain amount of money to buy initial equipment—how much depends on the character’s class. Clerics and druids receive 30-180gp (3d6 x 10); fi ghters, rangers and paladins receive 50-200gp ((3d6+2) x 10); magic users and illusionists receive 20-80gp (2d4 x 10), while thieves and assassins receive 20-120gp (2d6 x 10).  Multiclass individuals receive the award for the wealthiest of their classes (thus, a fi ghter/thief would receive the starting money of a fi ghter, while a cleric/magic user would receive the starting money of a cleric).

I don't have the books in front of me to the best of my knowledge OSRIC is almost identical to the PHB (and DMG) except for a few tweaks in things like names for wizard spells (ie. not 'Bigby', 'Mordenkainen' etc.) I actually did buy a copy of the PHB so I check it if it ever comes up. :)

I was thinking a shortbow might be a good idea as a weapon of choice for you Delta. It is pretty cheap (15 GP), gives up some ranged ability and I'm assuming that as an Illusionist you have a pretty good Dexterity right?

Sorry if Delta's contrarian ways are a problem. It wouldn't be the first time.

I was once in a  group that was told to rescue some Unicorn's from poachers, but the plan was for us to kidnap them, something I refused to do. Everything worked out in the end, but the last time I checked the DM was still a little miffed that I refused to kidnap intelligent beings who had done us no harm.

I picked a portrait. Not loving it though. I used the keyword search to get a female with white hair, and went with this one because of two things, one the (incorrect) musical instrument, and to avoid to beautiful faces as that isn't her look or personality.

Do you want any particular info in our biography lines DM Bard? Some DM's want things like AC or some such in there.

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

JFYI,

I have seen and done this both ways.  I used to always do solo adventures hidden from the group, which is more realistic.  However, over time, I've found it to be problematic.  You can have folks sitting around with almost nothing happening, and then, later, the information discovered in that solo thread isn't shared, or shared well.   I now just let everyone see what happens and you have to role play that you didn't know it.

If there is a reason to NOT do this specific to the game, I will deviate.  If it's meant to be secret, i'll keep it that way.

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

In my tradition of stealing most of my good ideas from my DM's I most admire, I meant to do this earlier.  My brief bio, please feel free to share yours here, or not, as you wish.

My name is Eustace Conway, you may have seen me on History Channel's show the Mountain Men.  If you've seen the show, you know all about me.

Okay, that was a bit of role playing.  My name is Robbie, and not a week used to go by that I wasn't stopped and sometimes pestered by people thinking I was Eustace Conway.  I'm his doppleganger.  Even now in pandemic,  when I go almost no where ever,  I get it a couple times a month at the gas station, and even once today when my wife and I hiked up into the mountains to a beautiful waterfall.

I'm 54, Director of Housing for a retirement community, and the past months have been nothing but protecting our seniors from the virus.  So far, not a case.

I've played D&D since, I believe 1977.  Played it ever since but pretty much have stuck to Basic, 1st, 2nd editions.  Although, I'm learning 5e because both my nieces, with no help from their uncle Rob discovered they loved d&d.  After college, I had no one to tabletop with and went exclusively online with pbem and then rpol.  I love the format.  It gives me a creative thing to do and at times when I can manage it.    Apparently now, the cool kids, and pretty girls play.  Well, not that we weren't cool, its just no one realized it at the time.  I have no children other than the furry type.  I live on a small farm in Southwest Virginia with 10 goats, 80 chickens, 7 dogs, 2 cats, and five pet rats.

I hike (its a love / hate thing), but I do it.  I enjoy shooting darts, cooking, watching good movies/tv, and Broadway.  I've acted in several local shows, and though it scares the heck out me everytime, I'm hooked.

As I've gotten older, I've learning to enjoy Dm-ing as much as I do playing, and look forward to this game.

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

Life can be an adventure, if you allow it.  Like, we spend 75 days, from mid-November to the end of January, travelling around the world.  Trust me, business class is the way to go!

We went to Singapore, London, Helsinki, Talin, Ivalo (280Km above the Arctic Circle), the dog sledding was a rush! then to the US for a driving trip, DC, Dayton, Nashville, Clearwater, FL panhandle, New Orleans, then flew to Tucson, and drove to Albuquerque, Painted Desert, Flagstaff and Sedona, then two weeks at the Wynn in LV, did a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon, then LA and back home.  Then Covid made life a challenge, as we were stuck at home. LOL  Glad we did that before it hit.

I started RPGs with Traveller before D&D got big, but have played a number of them.  I am glad to be back to playing, and it does keep the brain active.

I am seeing two differing strategies emerge:

1)  Place a bag of rocks/decoy at the well, stake out the place from a hiding place with a vantage of the well.

or

2) Go out in the night, and begin an educated search for the con men's campsite, which is likely near to a vantage point to watch the well.

Both have merits, possible drawbacks.  Once I see a consensus develop, I'll move into the night-time.

No, it's fine.  I planned to post a quick note earlier to move things forward but Monday's can get hectic in the office some days, and today was such a day.  I had hoped it would be quieter since the CEO is on vacation this week, that is usually a boon for me, but it wasn't to be.  Oh well, maybe the rest of the week will be slower.

Question for future reference:

If you successfully cast a Charm Person spell on someone but don't say anything to them . . . what do they do?  Or what won't they do?

I'd think at a minimum they would not take on offensive action against the caster, but I don't know if there would be a greater effect (and I'm not even sure about that).

Thoughts?  Rulings?

Wow, I thought that would be a much tougher battle.  Vala having two critical hits certainly changed the dogs fate.   Nicely done everyone, and excellent character role-playing.  I love it when a characters win a fight and then feel empathy or remorse when its in character.  Or reflect on their actions, tactics and the like.  Off to good start!  I'll post more tomorrow but my weekend is winding down, and so am I!  I did get my first ever very minor harvest from my new beehive.  Just a single frame I swapped out as the nectar and pollen are flowing great right now.  That one frame had about 60 ounces of honey, I couldn't believe it!.

I am getting a second hive in a few days, a local beekeeper is reducing his hives, am  really enjoying interacting with the bees.  Once I have them ready, my wife has been video ing our WE DON'T quite know what we are doing, bee hive experiences, and plan to post them on youtube so others can learn from our stumbling efforts.   I'll share links for any who want to see.

Again well done, an evil plot to extort a nice family has been foiled!!

Similar for me.  Mine would hit after daylight savings switches in the fall, making everything darker earlier.  Light (more, brighter, and better) has helped me a lot.  Moving did too; same city, but a house with better lighting capabilities (although that is not why we moved).

I don't have any strong thoughts on the riddle. 37 is plausible. It can also be 0, because pumpkins don't have eyes. Unless there's a skull lying on the floor somewhere, in which case, the number becomes two per skull. In any case, any of these answers might be correct. It all depends on how semantic the riddlemaster intends it to be.

As a player, logic puzzles are not really my forte. I do reasonably well at word puzzles and am rubbish when it comes to math puzzles (I dread "fantasy Sudoku" more than any other).

As for posting rates,  I don't like to leave folks behind, and don't like to stall a game too long.  For myself, when I'm playing a character, my posting can be fast one week, slow the next, depending on work/life.  I put in extra effort during combat because that really can't wait.  If I'm swamped, I'll just PM the GM and either let them take over for me, or give them my next 3 rounds worth of actions.

As for timezones,  I've lived on the east coast all my life and always in Virginia.  Where I grew up, then a different place at college, and then moved into the house I'm in today.

Just to clarify, I needed to roll to see if I found a ring and a pendant? If I failed the roll, I wouldn't know they were a ring and a pendant? Trying to get a grip on what I need to roll for. In one game I played, I had to roll to see if I could see books in a bookcase, from five feet away, and in the same few minutes, if I could see curtains on the window, from the inside.

Delta, sorry I might have misread the room.  I tend to have plots and sometimes though they are clear to me, I've confused players before. I've confused myself!  I know from experience its not fun to play in a game where you are constantly unsure as to what is what.  It happens easier in online format.  Delta's comment about being confused if these were the grave robbers is why I did the roll. Delta would know that Janek found in post 211, gold and silver nuggets, two daggers, and a light crossbow, no heirlooms.   Might have been just you roleplaying her thinking out loud and I jumped the gun.  If so, sorry.

Matthias, our GM posted this table since the last time one of us got hit:

PC       Class        Level    HP      AC   THAC 6

Vala     Fighter         1     11/1     2     14
Tanyl    Mage/Thief      1     6/4      4     15
Delta    Fghtr/Illnst   1/1    9/9      2     14
Matthias Cleric          1     10/3     6     14
Janek    Fghtr/Thief    1/1    10/8     3     14

Since then, I healed 7 points on Vala, leaving him down 3, you are the one most in need of healing.  I have one more available for the day, if you need it.

Mine tend to be often, but cogent and succinct.  I spent a lot of time writing professional correspondence and was taught to keep it short and to the point.  While I actually speak in a verbose manner, I write almost in snippets.

All styles are welcome here!  A good mix is best.

BTW, Janek, if you wish a different name, it's not too late.  That could be a middle name or something and you could just have him asked to be called something else.

By the recent couple of posts, I think my descriptions of late have been confusing.  I posted a new version of the map.  It only shows part of the first room of the current crypt (you took the right stairs into that room, and were attacked there by spiders coming from the other side.

The left side rooms are where you heard voices through a small sewer grate (marked with an X) on my new map.   (Y) on the map is the direction the rat jumps against the wall during her explanation to Delta.

There, clear as mud.

Yes I am confused. Does the map not show us the way tot he right anymore? I see the starter steps on the left, and the landing. Then the stairs left which lead down into a big room, and another set down in to a smaller room. I don't see the way right, which had some interesting things in it that I think Janek was exploring, water, and a compass etc.

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

Delta, sorry, for some reason the latest map cut off the other part of the crypt you had already explored.

To clarify OOC since I've confused everyone.  The large two sided crypt where you fought the spiders, has a very small drainage grate.  It obviously connects to the sewers under the city, and also to a sewer grate that exits into the crypt next door.  As Delta mentioned,  #15.  Although the salt water well, compasses, etc are interesting, they are mere decorations in honor of the gods of dead sailors.

3 - Totally unreadable
4 - Broken into - Felix  (Investigated, Pumpkins, Illusion, basement crypt, lit Dragon)
5 - Unreadable

My post referred to looking for my "companions", as a plurality, rather than a single character.

Sorry if my posts made you feel slighted. That was not the intent. The intent was purely to indicate Matthias was uncomfortable with not having the full weight of the entire party during  parlay with what he perceived to be a very dangerous foe. Quite simply, he (and I for OOC reasons), wanted other party members there for parlay.

OOC-wise, I did not want to steer nogotiations with the NPC without having others present and/or available to interject.

Good discussions here.  I'll work up a post for tomorrow, but just wanted to say, this format has the disadvantage of not being able to express our actions with facial and vocal and body language cues.  They say those things make up like 80 plus percent of actual communication in people.  We also all sometimes don't want to hold up the game and have little time to think about a post but just put something out rather quickly.  That said, I am enjoying all your characters, and posts quite a lot.

Yeah. Save or Suck is a phrase used to describe old school D&D mechanics that effectively sideline a character by taking them out of the game.

As D&D evolved, a lot of those mechanics have been refined to become hindrances as opposed to game stoppers, with the idea being as a player, it's more fun to be able to contribute (even if the character has penalties) than to have all your agency stripped away due to a bad dice roll.

I have also been quite busy these past few weeks. It seems Matthias' little sabbatical and period of divine reflection, for in-character reasons, coincided quite nicely with out of character stuff.

I am fine keeping Matthias sidelined through the holidays while he waits for his armor to be fitted, reflects, and attends to clerical duties in preparation for his new responsibilities as an Adept of Erathis.

Of course, party members can inquire after him at the Golden Hall, in the event they require his services and/or counsel.

Having retrieved the pendant, I assume you will eventually return it to the guard tower at the cemetery to claim your 500 gp reward from the Good Reverend.

100 gp's each

If not, let me know, otherwise, please update your character sheets for wealth and I'll do the same for your xp's.

Either 100 ea or 110 ea if you get the bonus.

xp's are 1 to 1 for treasure cashed in, magic items gain you some xp's if you keep them or sell them but not on a 1 to 1 basis.

Can I get some clarification please?

Is it the number 6 0 0 0 0 7 7 seven times, or is there one number of each language?

That is to say, "6" in Arcane, "0" in Common, Gnomish, Elvish and Dwarvish, the "7" in Draconian, and Halfling?

Does any one else want to pursue this riddle as much as I do, or should I drop it?

If so, I think I could transcribe to final symbol and see if the Mages Guild can tell me what language it is in, if any.

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

In reply to Delta (msg # 381):

I'd say yes and some of the subclasses look a lot of fun, but I can see why some people are upset.

First of all it gives the option for players to swap around racial ability score bonuses and skills to account for people who want to play things like Half-Orc Wizards and Dwarf Rogues (Thieves in AD&D terms) without feeling penalised. This has got caught up in all sorts of real world sensitivity issues which has polarised opinion, and is the part I have the most mixed feelings about.

The other big reason people are upset is that some of the content has been published elsewhere beforehand, mostly in setting specific books, whereas the versions in Tasha's are setting agnostic. This is deliberate - the book offers people who aren't interested in Eberron a chance to play Artificers but I can see if you spent your money on another book already it might be annoying.

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

In reply to Vala (msg # 382):

I purchase Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, have read through it, and overall found it to be pretty underwhelming. In fairness, it's not the kind of book I generally get very excited about as I tend to prefer lore-heavy/fluff RPG resources more than character build/crunch books--and that's what Tasha's primarily is.

Additionally, as you mentioned, a lot of content in this book appears elsewhere (Bladesinger: Sword Coast Adv. Guide, Artificer: Eberron, Patrons: Eberron, etc.). Finally, the editorial content of the book, i.e., Tasha's commentary is kind of uninspired in my opinion; whereas Xanathar's commentary, also a character building book, was more interesting to me and made for an enjoyable read.

I don't have any issue with the swapping around racial bonuses bit and understand why Wizards of the Coast would move in that direction. Everything in Tasha's is optional and all they are doing is giving D&D groups other ways to play the game.

All that said, I don't think I will ever really use the book. Pretty much the same is true with Xanathar's Guide to Everything, but I actually enjoyed reading that book. Not so much for Tasha's

I am primarily a DM though, so those with a player-focus might have a different take on the book.

From a DM's persepctive, the power-creep is mostly what concerns me about these sort of books. I have a lot of unpleasant memories of the latter days of 2e (Skills & Powers) and especially, 3.5e, which could quickly become extremely unbalanced/unwieldy/unfun when players would bring what I like to call Franken-build characters to the table.

DMs have to be familiar with all the character options that players bring to the game and when the options start ballooning out of control, it makes it very difficult (at least for me) to know how to balance the game so that everyone can contribute meaningfully.

Books like Xanathar's and Tasha's bring a lot of enjoyment to many players, as they get to try out new roleplay, powergame, and min-max builds, but it also puts a lot of additional pressure on the DM side to make sure they vet the material before allowing it into a game.

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

Sounds like I dodged a bullet, though I don't pick up much 5E stuff anymore anyway, so it wasn't hard to do.

When things like race (or class, or alignment) become meaningless, then yeah, I can see that it dilutes things.

As to character options and balooning, I think that is why I always preferred low level campaigns. I tended to run first thru fifth level characters, then start over, but levels came slow enough that it could still feel like a lot had been accomplished. I think the last table top game I played in (5E) we went from first to fifth in less than ten relatively short sessions.

In reply to Matthias (msg # 383):

I suspect my own lack of interest in Eberron might have helped me enjoy Tasha's... more because most of the content really was new to me.

I go back and forth on the Artificer, mostly because I have a love/hate relationship with magitech. I do like that it comes with an Alchemist archetype for those of us lean less 'magical engineer'.

The Psi Warrior, Soul Knife and (especially) Aberrant Mind Sorcerer all seem fun (though the last might be overpowered compared with other Sorcerer subclasses because of the free spells known.) The Clockwork Soul is a neat idea though I'd struggle to roleplay one.

The Rune Knight is... weird. I used to be really into Warhammer Fantasy and in that magical runes are very much a dwarf thing. The link with giants seems counterintuitive to me.

I do love the concept of the Swarmmaster (or as I like to think of it the Disney Princess class) but I'm not really a Ranger type player.

I haven't read through a whole book since AD&D.  I know the characters I want to play and that is what I read about.  Mountain Dwarf Fighter, Mark of the Shadow Elven Cleric,  Elven and Dwarf Ranger and Human Bard.  Interesting thing to me is that every Tom, Dick and Harriet playing everything but a bard wants to go out there and act like they are one.  Seen way to many that want to make those perfect, unbalanced characters and I think, dang, I am the strongest one in the group and doing half the damage of whatever they are.

3.5 really brought that to light for me, not my favorite edition. It might have been the people I played with, but they gloried in finding characters that 'broke' the game. They were the living embodiment of roll-play over role-play. I had to quit playing with them.

I think there are some things the older editions struggle with that are easier to find now. For instance it is hard to play a lightly armoured melee combatant in AD&D, despite it being such a staple of... well everything. Thieves are too fragile and Fighters have to almost deliberately hurt themselves mechanically if they forsake heavy armour and shields.

It was only a single set of numbers, just each number being a different language.  The languages themselves reveal they are all of the races of men, plus one in draconic (which since it was found in the hands of a small dragon, makes sense) and the final symbol at the bottom being Celestial (or Lawful Good) would seem to indicate the owner of the amulet wished it only to be found/interpreted by a goodly race.

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

I have updated the XP/Treasure topic.  You can go there if you want details.

Please add 1235gp's to your character sheet (each).

Congrats are in order

Vala is now a 2nd level fighter, and nearly to 3rd!

Tanyl is now a 2nd level thief.

Delta is now a 2nd level fighter.

Janek is now a 2nd level thief.

On top of the treasures recovered, you were paid 2250 for the 2 students and the university, along with much praise at bringing them home alive.  The second scholar required a dispel magic to wake up but both of them and their families and the university is very pleased with your success.  (the fees were 2500, but Thar gets his 10%).

Study it for awhile, probably excavate some, maybe restore it as a landmark, you'd be welcome to join them especially at the early stages, they will still have fears about going there.  Plus, they would be most interested in your descriptions and drawings of the sea goddess.

Are the experience totals you show including the 10% bonus?  Because I have slightly higher totals than you do, and I'm wondering if that's the reason.

And . . . how are we dividing the gold?  3 ways, or 4.  I feel like that, much as I'd like extra gold, logically Janek would take his share and then announce his retirement or departure for parts unknown.

I divided the gold between the 4 of you.  And yes, the XP's are adjusted by the 10 percent, which accounts for some differences.

Please go ahead and take a few days to roll for levelling up, adjusting sheets, and buying goods with your new wealth.  For standard items, just use the PH for pricing.  If you look for anything magical, let me know and I'll see if its available and the costs.

Not sure on Matthias yet, I'll reach out before the next adventure, but certainly I'll want at least 4 players.

DM: I want to make sure I understand the scene and layout before posting. The three humanoids are to the east of Vala and Matthias, at the end of the wide hallway. To get to the library, where Delta and Tanyl are, the three humanoids have to walk toward Vala and Matthias, and then turn south before they reach Vala and Matthias, correct?

How much cover/concealment do we have in the shadows by the door, or is it highly likely these humanoids will notice us once they draw closer?

Only a cantrip? To be fair, 5E cantrips are often pretty powerful.

There was a science fiction story back in the day, the thirties maybe? About aliens who opened a restaurant and promised people any dish they wanted, and everything tasted delicious. I'm not sure how they got to the ending, but it turned out it was all bland mush, and psychic aliens who could make you think it was great food.

I once used a simple cantrip in a way strict game masters wouldn't have allowed, but I was happy to have an open minded DM. A giant slug was on it's way to crush our camp. Not on purpose, we just happened to be in  our way. I made it think it sense salt between us and it, and it turned away.

I thought the consensus was to attack under cover of the illusion -- but Tanyl isn't the one to lead the charge.

UNLESS -- are they now turned around staring at the illusion?  And thus lined up for a backstab try?

Congratulations, you have defeated Tegroth and his minions, rescued the Acolytes,  and cleared the hideaway.   Please continue to post anything you wish IC, I am going to begin calculating XP and Treasure.

I must say, near the end of that fight, I was putting the odds at about 60 / 40 for a TPK.  I've never GM'd one, and didn't want it but knowing what the giant had left and the damage it did per hit, it was looking razor thin.  Delta's spell, and the excellent post that accompanied it, had only a small chance of working, and then, likely only to buy you a few rounds, however, my stupid giant rolled a (1) on his saving throw, thus buying suggestion hook, line and sinker along with the magic.  I did not expect that.

You have earned a giant's treasure!  Well done, well fought.

More to come!

In total, the treasure found in Tegroth's horde is:

8444 gp’s
Scrolls: Magic Missle (MU), Strength (MU),  Wall of Fog  (ILL),  Improved Phanstasmal Force(ILL)
Potions: Growth, Levitation
Mace +2
Large Shield +1
Long Sword +1
Short Sword +1
Two Handed Sword +1
Fine Crafted Set of Lock Picks
Deck of Cards

Kellen would like the 2 handed sword, and 400 gp's only, he only wants what he can carry with him.

Not that anyone is asking, but unless Vala has something to say about it, (and I doubt she will, as dedicated as she is to her Star Blade) I am good with Kellen's portion.

I am personally thrill at the presence of Illusionist magic, and hope no one will fight me over them.

I would also like the magic short sword.

Aside from my share of the gold, I am not really hungry for anything else, although the deck of cards interests her. Can we check to see if it is magical?

Both potions seem to be better suited to other members of the party.

I would like to suggest a portion of the gold be donated to the Sisters, for repairs and such?

IC:

Tanyl is good with Kellen's requests.

Tanyl is also good with Delta's requests.

Tanyl will grumble at the idea of sharing gold with the sisters, but will acquiesce if others feel strongly.

Tanyl obviously would like the lock picks.  Vala should have dibs on the long sword over Tanyl, but if she doesn't want it he can and would use it.

Tanyl is not overly interested in those particular MU spells, but will give some thought to Magic Missile.  It's probably something he should want as a "just in case all else fails" type of thing.

OOC:

I think the cards and the potion might fall in the category of "group loot," that we just carry them and use them situationally.  A lot will depend on what those cards are.

Tegroth did not plunder the Sisters wealth.

By the time you, Bren and Rachel's teeth and tongue are already growing back.  If your gift from Abbess Hana is to be trusted, they can raise the dead, certainly they can restore the body.

The deck of cards when fully tested, give off the strongest magic you've ever seen, they detect both strongly good and evil.

I saw The Paper Chase a looong time ago.  The depiction of what class was like was accurate for its time.  It is less universally accurate as times have changed.  Some schools may be like that a lot, but more likely you'll find classes that are like that.  It depends greatly on the professor, whether it's a first year, second year or third year class, etc.

Since its been awhile, just to remind you, you found in one of the crypts, a small dragon corpse, obviously a familiar to a wizard.  You were looking for an amulet, and it was stolen from that crypt.  When you found it, it had an odd series of numbers on it written across multiple languages.   The wizard was an advisor to one of the early rules of Stormhaven and was rumored to have hidden retreat/lab/library/etc. somewhere in the city which was never found after his death.  That is a rough (and from memory) history.  Any omissions, inaccuracies, or outright lies, can be blamed on the DM, although that has its risks.

So, updates.

Delta is right, just images, no program.  I'm not that gifted :-).  Wish I was.

Our longtime friend passed a few days after my last post.  My wife and many of her close girl friends spent the last few days bedside, and it was good they got to say goodbye.  I've gotten together with her husband since and he's doing about as well as you could hope for.

CV is still busting us here at work, but seems to have levelled out.  Hopefully it will start trending down again soon.

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

I should be able to resume a more sane gaming life again.  We had some mini outbreaks of covid at work, but with almost all my residents vaccinated, and about 80 percent of our staff, they didn't spread much like they did in the early waves.  We lost one resident to it but they were over 100 years old.  As of now, we are back to zero cases, and the county rates have dropped from almost 20% positivity rates down to less than 4%.

During the last few months, I bowed out of almost all the games I was in and will try to devote myself to being more engaged in the ones I chose to play in.

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

Int checks out,  the symbol on the pendant is the symbol for creation in LG.  It is pronounced almost the same Cray-Shun.

As a reminder, this was what you found about about the pendant some time ago:

"Tis' a long story, but here is a short version.  Timiteus the First, an explorer and warrior, built Stormhaven out of the ruins of old cities.  During his time, he united the many peoples of this land, and with an adviser from a far land, turned what was a filthy sprawl of huts, into a vast and powerful city.  His advisor was a learned man, both magician, and architect, who helped design and build the great town we live in.  It is said, one of his vast projects, and first among them, was to create the sewers, carving them from the old ruins beneath the city,  taking the cities waste far out to sea.  It took decades and many a dwarf from the Iron Hills was called in to help this project.  The city was built, and time moved on, but it was said this advisor, who was both learned, magical, and wise, had his own home and library hidden deep within the sewers, hidden beneath a special sewer cap.  It was to be hidden until his demise, when, and only then, an amulet would reveal the number of this special sewer grate.  All the grates are numbered, and there are archives you can find that list where they are.   So many many fools have looked for this hidden archive of Timiteus' advisor, and much has been made of the amulets, the iron lids that show up from time to time.  I believe it all nonsense,  look at his one, ancient, but makes no sense at all.   But, it is still fun to collect them..."

I don't know that I have any particular traits in mind.  Almost any personality trait would be fun, except the personality trait of "betrayer."

While cheaper has virtues, you get what you pay for.  Tanyl isn't of a mind to skimp.  The bigger issue relates to whether the NPC gets a share of the treasure (which should lower the wages).

35 seems pricy but is ameliorated by not wanting treasure.

It's also weird: I mean, he wants to find magic items and art, but doesn't want any part of the find?  I bet he plans to murder us to take what he wants.

Not nearly as exciting as having to combat a phishing attack but it's all I got. :)

I am coming up on my 57th birthday though, and decided I miss having a little time for dnd and adventure.   I'll post in the next few weeks about restarting this game.   Think I'll aim to play one, and DM one this year. Hope all of you are doing well!

I have been dealing with a lot of health issues for the past few month, and have really stepped away from RPoL as a result. Not sure I can find Delta's voice anymore, as well. I will try though.

Sorry to hear that. Gaming is fun but your health comes first.

I'm so sorry to hear that.  If gaming is a not a relief/release or is a burden, don't force yourself at the expense of your health.

But if playing provides any solace, we're here for you.

It's more an issue of anxiety, hard to focus on things. I have a lot of things going on, and apparently more on the way.

I also deal with sometimes very difficult anxiety this time of year.   I didn't even realize it until I got married and my wife was like, why do you go crazy every September.   Turns out, seasonal affective disorder affects a lot of people.   I can control it a bit better now that I know what it is,  get out in the sun more,  I have a sunlamp I use as well.  Things that wouldn't bother me othertimes seem overwhelming when I'm in its grips!  Yuk.

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

You may roll attacks, they are AC:4.

I will give you a welcome back boon of a sorts, if you wish to take it.  You MAY if you chose, take a -1 on all your attacks hand to hand (not bows).   This will represent that you are keeping one eye on that stinger, so if it strikes and hits, you will first get a DEX save to have dodged it, and then if that fails, you'll take the damage and have to save against poison, so you gives the extra dex save in trade.

Does the act of bandaging heal any hit points? I know in some games it does. If so, I will bandage first, then action point second.

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

Binding wounds stabilizes a person at 0.  So, in a way it does recover points.  Vala is at -5 now, so it would bring her to 0.

You bind, and then use your AP on Vala?  Or Nargion?

Gad, tough choice. Logically the cleric makes more sense, but Delta is a child of emotion, so I will go with Vala, justifying it with the knowledge that she doesn't think anything she can do works on poision anyway.

Re: OOC: Table Talk ONE

Sorry folks, no excuse, RL has just been hammering away at me, I'll not list it all but at least daily I say, surely it will slow down, this can't keep happening, no such luck.  I am coming to conclusion this is my new normal in life.  And if so, I may have to stop a good many things I consider fun/play time.  This is one I don't want to give up, so for now, hang with me, surely it will SLOW down, some day.
