The White Swan

The mid afternoon sun greeted the graceful two masts ship as entered the harbor, battle damaged but proudly flying the Waterdevian flag. The ship it was towing had suffered much more, it’s single mast nowhere to be seen, ripped apart by the magic of the ship’s wizard, a lizard folk named Sandron. The human first mate Machrel was tossing her auburn locks away from her face while directing the docking maneuver to the shipyard, the tall castle of the High King raising on the starboard side across the wide harbor. Captain Mattegan, dressed in his shore bound fineries, adjusted his plumed hat, ready to go see the harbormaster. There was a good bounty to be collected by the half-elf and his crew and he was pleased to bring those pirates to justice. The new crew members had performed well, and as he approached the port side, he tipped his hat with a smile to the tiefling, half-elf and bugbear, as they were hard at work hauling a cable to retract the sail. He knew the strange Tabaxi was probably up in the crow’s nest, as usual. The mostly human crew had had initial misgiving about the new hiring, but after a few weeks at sea and their first battle, they had showed everyone that they were not dead weights and the hardship of the sea had brought them in the fold. The Captain certainly wasn’t a stranger to accepting other races, as he still remembered sailing with a dark elf on his first cruise on the Sea Sprite, all those centuries ago.

The docking maneuver completed and the gangplank in place, the half-elf went ashore, gripping the arm of the harbormaster in a warrior’s greeting, just as the first mate barked for the crew to assemble on the deck. The prisoners were taken ashore by a group of hard faced knights of the kingdom.

All right matteys! For those who never came here, we’re now at Caer Callidyr, in the Moonshea! The Ffolks here are mostly law abiding, but still keep your wits about you! We sustained light damage in that last fight, and we should be able to leave in two days! Tonight the Capt’n is giving ya all shore leave, but I expect every last one of ya seadogs back here at high noon tomorrow! Avoid the Spitting Mermaid and Shark’s Tooth, the rest of the establishments in the dock sector should not fleece you too much. As an advance on the bounty, the Capt’n has agreed to give ya all 10 gold pieces! Go see the quartermaster to get it and remember, the Moonshaes are far from Waterdeep, it’s a long swim! We won’t be waiting for ya if you miss the tide!

That got the crew cheering and roaring with laughter, the spirits high, as they lined up semi chaotically in front of a rickety table, a mousy looking man counting the pieces out of a small coffer and studiously noting who got what in a big ink stained ledger. As the last crew members enrolled, the teifling, bugbear, half-elf and tabaxi stood together at the end of the line, waiting for their turn.

The White Swan

While I am waiting for my advance I look up at the white castle perched overlooking the city of Caer Callidyr. I have been to the Moonshae Islands before but I had never made port here before. I wonder if I can find a book on the history of the region in the city. Books are expensive though so even if I do I probably can't afford it yet anyway. Maybe after the prize money is divided up. As a new crew member my share will be small but as long as I don't go crazy on liberty it should last a while.

I cast a look at the Tiefling, Tabaxi, and Bugbear next to me. They too were new to the crew this voyage and given their unusual nature they probably had a hard time making friends. That is an opportunity. They seemed competent on the the voyage, though the Bugbear's swagger is going to get him into trouble. It's always good to have someone watching your back.

I turn to the three of them with a large smile, "This was a short voyage but still its good to be back in port. Do you three have any plans?"

The White Swan

Styx wasn't used to being on the sea this much, though for the past month or two, this had been his life.  Surprisingly, when stepping off the gangplank, he still had the strange feeling like his body was swaying with the movement of the ocean.  With a massive stretch that reached through his whole body as if waking up from a deep sleep, he took in the city before him.

Yup, he should own the city by nightfall.  Actually tonight wasn't going to work for him.... there was drinking to be had...and some gambling.  How else was he going to double or triple his money so he can get only the best accommodations?  Maybe when they get back from their assignment he'll look into it running the place.  He would need to make sure it fits his needs first anyway. It seems acceptable as a whole, but he'll have to dig a bit more before settling.

The fact that the Captain said to stay away from the Spitting Mermaid and the Shark's tooth, made him want to check them out even more.  Were they just pricey?  Nothing was too good for Styx, that's for sure.  Or were they too shady?  That might work out well for him, but not being one of the locals, even the famous Styx might be outmatched with some organized cheating.  Nah, better he was in control of the game.  He'll start one up if there's time at a place of his choosing, but first, he needed to find some companions.

Most of the crew he sailed with were good enough, but he liked the wiseassery of the Tiefling warrior.  It won't be easy trying his best to keep her from falling in love with him, but it was bound to happen eventually; he was on an important mission though, eyes set on the path ahead, and must remain distraction free.  She'll be heartbroken of course, and he may console her, having gone through this very situation thousands of times, but not if she's one of the crying ones.  That would just be irritating.

There was something about the Half-Elf too.  As if there was a darker past, but yet all he could see was a deeper, and genuine kindness.  He didn't want to judge too quickly, as that can get you killed, but so far, he thought well of that one.  This one would probably fall in love with him too, but alas, this particular Hugbear is all about the ladies.  He will most likely need to console this one as well.  Tis the burden of one so amazing I guess.

Anyways, hoping he wasn't wrong about him, when asked by the Half-Elf, Ersin he believed his name was, what plans he had, Styx gently clapped him on the back (knowing his own strength) and said, "Agreed Ersin.  It is good to be back on land, though my legs are a little unsteady after the long journey at sea.  I think I'd like to find a nice place to hole up for the night, but not before there was drinking to be had and gambling to be won.  This recently acquired gold will need some friends to get along with, and 20 would be the perfect party size in my pocket.  Whether I'm successful or not, I'd love to buy you three a round, wherever we end up.  So what about you, Ersin? What led you to be part of this crew? and you Kali.....what's your story?"

I casually disengage from the Bugbear, please don't let him be a hair tussler! I keep it short but that is not an excuse for people to rub it! "My older brother stole the family inheritance and ran off to join a pirate crew. I swore to our younger sister I would get it back." I tell him still smiling. "In the meantime I will happily join you for a round." I have the feeling I am going to be watching his back more than the other way around.

I watch as Esa twines herself between the legs of the the Tiefling, sniffs at the Tabaxi before fading out of sight again and I smile at her antics. "What about you Kallista, Feather in the Wind will you be joining us?"

In reply to Ersin (msg # 4):

While not one to normally butt into people's business Ersin, why would someone steal an inheritance and join a pirate crew, when he could just live off the inheritance?  Sounds more like he was tricked into it.  Joining pirates would just offer him a chance to lose said inheritance quickly, would it not?  I fear your brother may have been coerced or in trouble

"He always was a fuck-up." I say with a shrug watching Esa as she ran along in front of him jumping from post to post on the pier. "I think he just liked the freedom and the lifestyle. You know kill who you want take what you want."

Esa turns around to look at me her dark eyes boring into mine. "I am starting to get hungry again. Will there be sustenance here?"

"I don't know, maybe. There are always some criminals in places like this that may cross our path. In the meantime, you will have to make due with what I can provide."

"I understand. There may be other curiosities for us to find while we are here." She cocks her head at me before fading away. "The long-armed one may make an interesting companion. Maybe he can help us find these criminals you speak of."

I shake my head before returning my thoughts to Styx's question. "All I want back is our mother's wedding ring. It was supposed to go to our sister when she got married. There was a boy courting her when we left port and it looked like things could be getting serious."

To each their own, I guess.

Well, if there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.

With that, Styx starts talking with some of the locals, trying to find out more about the best places to stay, more about the Spitting Mermaid and Shark's tooth, in hopes he'll get a better feel of what he is walking into.  He'll also look around to see if there's any hidden Thieves Cant written or placed around that he might recognize, should he need a fence or a place to keep quiet for the night, depending on how well the night goes.  He'll just talk it up with these locals, until Kali has gathered her upfront share and is ready to go.

What does Styx find out?

The tabaxi was daydreaming about the view the sea gulls must have from up there when the half-elf asked what were his plans.

I don’t know yet… Fly? Fly like the sea gulls would be fun. Oh, you mean tonight? I’m sorry, I don’t know… might I follow you around? There must be some interesting sights and sounds here!

Please, call me Wind, I know, we Tabaxi have a strange naming convention for your sensibilities.

The bugbear had a glint in his eye, he was certainly feeling back home with the possibility of doing a quick gold piece or two. Taping on the shoulder of the sailor in front of him, a middle-age fellow named Gerald, his skin tanned and lined by years of sea-salt exposition, Styx asked him what was so special about the two places they were warned about. The sailor started to laugh, clapping the rogue’s arm before saying:

Oh you don’t want to go to them places boy. The Mermaid’s got that fighting ring, it’s legal in town, but the capt’n don’t like it when a mattey’s coming back with a broken arm.

Dropping his voice a bit, he looked at the first mate before continuing.

The Tooth will eat you alive, boy. There ain’t no worse place here. Royal guards watch it like hawks, never seem to catch them on the act, but trust me, you don’t want to be caught there… and if you survive, Machrel’s gonna skin you alive… I saw it before, the woman’s is fierce with her whip!

Spitting over the railing like an expert, the man did some kind of protective gesture before turning back in line.

The Tooth’s got the devil’s eye boy, don’t go near that place!

Finaly, the quartet turn to get their gold arrive, the quartermaster handing them each ten gold pieces, before carefully locking the chest with a key he kept around his neck.

The auburn haired woman repeated that she wanted everyone back at high noon the following day, then dismissed the crew to their occupations, the sailors chitchatting as they left the ship. Coming out of his cabin just then, the dark blue robe wizard went to  talk with Malchrel in a hushed tone.

As Ersin and Styx were talking to me, I thought I felt something rubbing my legs. There were a couple cats aboard this ship, so guessing it was one of them, I looked down intending to pet it. There was nothing there. Curious.

Of course, I'll come with you. I won't say no to free ale. I said with a chuckle. It was then that Styx asked another sailor about the forbidden establishments. Hearing them described, the Mermaid sounded like my kinda place. I bet I could make a killing there. It was then our turn to collect our advance and I pocketed the ten gold pieces before setting off after the other three.

Looking up at Styx I say,
So, where are we headed?

Sounds like the Spitting Mermaid is where we want to be Kali.  So I need to know...as I plan on betting on you, which will determine how many drinks we get, are you any good?  I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, but it would be nice to have some reassurance, as I'm quite thirsty and much bigger than you are.  I can drink a LOT.

Oh and before you go rushing in, let me work my magic on the crowd first.

Oh and Ersin, the Spitting Mermaid is where we'll be.  You'll most likely find us drinking some of the cash we've made!

Interested in the fighting ring I see; not a surprise. Seeing the shops still open Ersin steps towards the gangplank and makes his way down to the pier. "I want to take a look around the market; maybe ask around if there is anything interesting happening tonight. I will meet you two at the Mermaid in an hour?" Turning back to look at the Tabaxi. "What about you Wind?"

As we get closer to the crowd on the pier Esa appears rubbing up against the legs of a small child with light fingers working the crowd. Seeing this I move my money pouch higher, between my breastplate and my chest next to my heart. "You might want to keep a close eye on your coin if you plan on spending it tonight." I tell the others before making my way towards the market.

I chuckled, I am capable. I would like to suss out my competition before I commit to the fight though. I know some highly skilled fighters that I would not wish to battle even if they were on their last leg so to speak.

As we made our way through the crowd to get to the part of town the Spitting Mermaid was in, I could see in my peripherals small fingers trying to make off with my money pouch. Grabbing their wrist so they couldn’t scamper off, I smiled. I wouldn’t do that if I were you. I looked down to see their reaction to being caught. I would bet it doesn’t happen very often.

Heeding Ersin's warning, I move my money pouch higher up, where little prying hands could not reach.  Being 7'11" had its advantages you know.

Despite the warning, Styx and Kali decided to go to the Spitting Mermaid, bringing with them a promise that Ersin and Wind would join them soon. As they were walking away from the ship some urchins started their well-rehearsed routine of begging to distract from the pick pocketers to do their deed, but the observant group did not play that game, one little girl sporting a nasty bruise on her wrist for her efforts of trying to steal from Kali.

The Spitting Mermaid was easily found, being only one street away from the wharf. The three stories structure was well maintained, a fresh coat of paint recently applied, the small fountain giving the inn its namesake running clear water. After checking in with the brutish muscle bound man that served as a bouncer, that gave them strict but said too often instructions that weapons would not be allowed to be unsheathed, the duo was allowed in. The evening crowd was just beginning to filter in, so Styx and Kali had their pick of tables, in the otherwise classic looking inn, with the bar along the back wall, a fire being prepared to be lit in the hearth set on the wall left of the entrance, a staircase to the right of the bar.  Two serving maids were chatting with the barman, while keeping for eye on new arrivals in the common room, that could sit about 50 patrons.

As soon as the duo picked a table, the youngest maid, a willowy blonde teenager came to them and said:

Welcome to the Spitting Mermaid, what can I get you?

Ersin and Wind separated from their erstwhile companions to go look for books and curiosities. While there was the regular assortment of wood carvings by sailors too old to go back to sea, Ersin did not find what he was looking for near the docks. Asking around, he was directed further in the city, to the marketplace, where he could maybe find a shop still open. Walking quickly, they reached the market as the street vendors were closing their wares, the sun almost gone. A small team of youth wearing the royal colors were hard at work lighting up street lamps in the main arteries of the city, which allowed Wind to notice a shop with a unfurled scroll as a banner.

Ersin, maybe you would find your books here?

Just as he was saying so, the door opened and a old man came out, wearing an ink stained vest with a lit lantern that he carefully put on the ground before turning around to close the door, taking a key in his pocket…

"Good spotting Wind, but it seems I'm too late." I consider begging the owner to let us in anyway but decide against it. It's not urgent and I can come back in the morning. I look around to orient myself so that I will remember where to come tomorrow. "Well unless you have something you want to do how about we go meet the others at the Mermaid." The Tabaxi said nothing seemingly absorbed watching a pair of Seagulls in flight.

As he made his way back to the wharf and along the waterfront he casually listened to the conversations around him. They were all normal: a young man complaining about his nagging mother, a young woman complaining about some stupid boy, and a pair of old-timers complaining how it was so much better in the old days. Just a regular city with people going about their every day lives. That was a good thing; just not for me. From Charlie's stories it seemed that adventure was easy to find; all I had to do was go to the local pub and it would find me. Alas, that was not my experience. I enjoyed hunting down those bastard pirates and the money was good but it was not going to get me the recognition I craved.

As we came up to a three story building, its white paint on fire with the setting sun, I watch as Esa scampers up the side of the building before hopping from window to window peering inside. I am not sure if she can actually see inside or if it just amuses her to pretend.

"The other two are inside. Will there be criminals here?"

"I am sure there are but unless they bother us we'll be leaving them alone." I smile at her single mindedness when shes hungry.

"Very well. But they said there's a fighting ring here so there'll be violence. And gambling!"

Yes I am sure there'll be. Styx will probably be neck deep and I will need to haul him back to the ship tomorrow. He's not nearly as clever nor charming as he thinks. Hopefully, Kali won't let him get too crazy."

"Hmm, maybe you should let yourself get a little crazy. It might do you good." By now Esa was casually draping herself on top of the fountain batting at the water flowing from the mermaid's mouth.

"You're right but you know how bad it gets back home if I do anything even remotely scandalous. You'd think everyone in Waterdeep has better things to do then gossip about me."

I shake my head to clear it of such thoughts and approach the large bouncer at the door. After a prepared speech about not drawing weapons on the premises Wind and I are waved in. It's still early so business hasn't picked up yet and there are numerous open tables and the two barmaids are gossiping quietly at the bar between taking orders. Now where are the others??? Ahh there they are. I get Wind's attention and point out the others and we head over.

As Styx walks by the much smaller than him bouncer and flexes his much larger muscles, he ducks into the tavern and takes a look around, scoping out the clientele, hoping to find someone he can chat up to get some information on.

After grabbing a table, the waitress is immediately upon him asking for drink orders, most likely due to his overly handsome nature.

Good Evening!  What's your name and what drinks are available?  Before you answer that, I hear you guys have a fighting ring!  How exciting!  Where can we find that and what good info can you tell us about it, you know...who are the contenders, and the movers and shakers around these parts?

Oh, you would need to talk to mister Ognib about that, sir. The ring is not really here in the inn, but mister Ognib does take the bets and organize the fights. Would you like to participate? I can let him know to come see you. He’s not here right now, it’s still early for him.

Can I serve you anything? The cook has prepared a pork roast today, with potatoes and fresh bread. My name is Lissy, if you need something, you can call me

Styx ordered dwarven ale and the meal, joking with the maid that it was strong and hearty like him, to which she politely smiled. Despite her young age, she did have some experience and boasting sailors was one of the things she had quickly learned about. At least the bugbear did not try to grope her with those long arms of his!  The tiefling with the purple hair also ordered dwarven ale to go with the roast, and she left to get their orders.

Styx looked around the room, quickly detecting some signs that this place was probably under the protection of the local thief guild, and he smiled at a fellow that he was certain was a guild member, the lad clumsily trying to look uninterested. It was then that he saw Ersin and Wind come in through the door.

*********************

As the tabaxi and half-elf decided to rejoin their companions at the Spitting Mermaid, Wind felt talkative, as he suddenly decided to climb a unlit public lamp, disturbing the crew of humans trying to do their jobs.

Didn’t you want to try to see if he would have let us in anyway, Ersin?

We might have been able to convince him to re-open and let us in but why. I do not urgently need a book at the moment. Besides books are expensive and I may not have enough on me. Is it fair to delay him going home and having his dinner when I may not buy something anyway. No I will come back in the morning.

Wind pondered this a moment before nodding, as the human in charge was cursing at the tabaxi, which simply ignored him.

City life is so strange sometimes, everything stops with the sun. Life doesn’t stop with the light, but the humans don’t seem to understand that…

Even if life doesn't stop when the sun goes down it usually isn't the same creatures out and about. Is it more strange that creatures like owls and bats retreat to their dens when the sun come up?

With a word and gesture, he casted a simple spell and the lamp magically lit up, the oil burning as it should. Squinting, he jumped down the lamp post, closing and opening his green eyes rapidly to readjust after the sudden flare up.

You are so right! But so am I, the nocturnal moth is as much a part of life as the mosquito that flies during the day.

They continued on, as fire lights lit up around them in the buildings, creating strange shadows in the streets.

How can humans live with all that fire around them? They are so clumsy, I’m surprised the town hasn’t burned down yet.

Fire is always a danger but it is not like the entire city is build of wood. Still there are races that cannot see as well in the dark as others and they have to find some way to compete.

The duo finally arrived at the Spitting Mermaid, and located their companions, just as a young blonde serving maid left them.

Lissy turned around when she heard her name, and noticing the other two customers, she nodded her understanding to Styx. Maybe she would get a good tip out of this bunch of newcomers tonight!

The pimpled faced youth at the bar that Styx had noted was working really hard to keep watching the thickening crowd and not seem like he was. But it was so hard to not glance over to the strange crew at the corner table, the enticing purple haired horned woman having caught his fancy. He had only heard about bugbears before, and had no idea what the feline-like person was. Taking a swig of his mead, he nearly drowned and started coughing.

Oh no, ma'am, it's really close. Jensen, the barman and owner of the Mermaid doesn't want fights in his bar and so decided to create the ring, when he was in Baldur's Gate. And she moved away, going from table to table to continue serving the clients in her half of the bar.

Styx motions for Kali to lean in: Kali, come here for a sec.  You see that youth over there.  He's definitely Thieves' guild, but obviously green.  He's totally smitten with you.
Think you could use that to your advantage and get us some much needed info on the fighting ring, etc..?

Styx keeps looking around the tavern to make sure he's the only Thieves' Guild member.  He would also like to use insight to make sure the member isn't faking his incompetence.

When Lissy returns with their dinner, I lift my right hand to get her attention. "You said earlier that Jensen is in charge of the fighting ring next door? Please point him out to me, I am interested what the rules are."

Esa meanwhile was nosing around the young man at the bar who had taken a fancy to Kali. "This ones heart rate is high and its face is flushed. Is it dying?"

I barely suppress the laugh before it can escape. "No, though he may wish he was if he knew we had noticed. He is attracted to Kali."

"The purple-haired one?"

I smile at the response, after all these years she still refuses to use names. "Yes the purple-haired one."

Lizzy came back with four well filled plates of pork, boiled potatoes and fresh bread, that she deposited in front of the quartet, and said to Ersin.

Mr. Jensen is the owner but he’s not managing the ring sir. Mr. Ognib is. Oh, you’re lucky, here he is! I’ll go tell him you want to talk to him.

The serving maid pointed at an extravagant hat that just got to be seen over the bannister of the stairs before  fluttering away, the now more than half full inn taking her attention. She did go towards the stairs and spoke before pointing to the table and catching something with a glint of gold, hiding it in her bustier. The owner of the hat went to the bar first, where a glass of wine was already waiting for him, spoke a few words to the pimpled face youth and strode confidently towards the table.

In front of you appeared a gnome dressed in a custom made shirt of the finest Calishite red silk with matching pants, fine leathered black boots, the aforementioned hat was a blue turban with a great feather in front, held in place by a golden medallion. The gnome’s hair and beard were perfectly groomed, it’s brown color just with a little hint of gray gave him a distinguished air. When he spoke, his high pitched voice was precisely modulated.

My sweet Lissy tells me you are interested in our little entertainment?

I look over at the Gnome and try to hide a smirk. Esa has perched herself on his shoulder with her front paws on top of his turban and is trying to bite the lightly bobbing feather.

"We are indeed. We are staying at the Drunken Boar while our captain is securing us a new cargo. We heard about your entertainment and want to know what the rules are. While I barely know which end of this here sword is supposed to go into the other fellow, my compatriots," waving in Styx's and Kali's directions, "are more capable and may be interested in participating. Me and my ginger friend," I say pointing at the Tabaxi across the table, "both like to make the occasional wager and thought this may be a grand opportunity."

While Kali decided what she wanted to do with the green guild member, Styx had to pull back from the fun and games.  It was time to focus.  This was his element after all; seeing the real players amongst the rabble, knowing how to operate within the darker realms of thieves and understanding their thinking.  He needed to make sure Ognib knew he wasn't someone to prey on and keep it ambiguous enough to throw him off guard.

Good evening Ognib!

You have quite a nice set up here!  I am curious about your green decoy over there.  He's not very convincing.  I wouldn't want you to tarnish the reputation of your guild, so I was wondering, is he the son of a higher up and so you had no choice in the matter about placement?

Also, the bar maids seem quite experienced...in more than just delivering food and drinks.  I'm guessing they are your pairs of eyes, bodyguards, and pulse on the crowd?

My companions and I are just looking to get acquainted with the fighting ring and I was curious if there were any openings left?  Any cost to enter? Anyone we should watch out for in the ring, who may not fight fair?

Just curious about how the whole thing works, and most importantly...where can we place our bets!

The tabaxi slurped noisily taking a huge gulp of beer after Ersin little discourse, then started muttering something, foam dripping from its fur. Raising his eyes, he saw that the gnome was looking at him disapprovingly, to which he shrugged, burped, picked a potato with his extended claws and dropped it in it’s mouth, not a care in the world.

Ognib turned back to Ersin, after clearing his throat.

The Drunken Boar is a fine establishment, but I’m certain Jensen’s hospitality would have satisfied you, lady and gentlemen. I am always looking for more entertainers and if your companions are willing to participate, I’ll be glad to arrange it.

Styx then spoke and Ognib gave him a sly smile, twirling his mustache between his fingers.

Now now good sir, you do have a good eye! We do pride ourselves with hiring the very best, are you looking for a job? Between you and me, sir, not many look past that young man, I am impressed! And I am not an easily impressed gnome!

He looked at the quartet for a moment, still twirling his mustache. His smile suddenly lit up, a mischievous look in his eyes.

And I think I will make you my guests tonight, it is so rare to have the pleasure of meeting such… shall we say exotic, visitors as you. Lissy! Please open a tab on my account for my guests.

I know you wish to partake in our little entertainment, but civilities do require a proper introduction. I am your host tonight, Sebastopol Ognib, and you are?

Ersin introduced everyone to Ognib, but he used my formal name. While fighting is not the time to be formal, so I interjected, I do prefer Kali to Kalista while in informal situations and fighting rings are about as informal as they come, so please call me Kali. I would also like to know the specifics of the ring as I would like to enter. I get a deep-seated pleasure from bashing others around. My mother called it my biggest flaw as it came from my father's devilish side. He would be so proud.

I chuckled to myself before continuing, Are there preliminary rounds before one gets brought in front of the audience? Or is it more of a free-for-all where anyone who wishes to enter gets to fight and be bet on?

My my my, miss Kali, you have such enthusiasm, this is refreshing! This is going to be a grand night, I can feel it in my mustache! It’s a series of rounds that are determined when everyone is registered, there is still a good hour before we start. Anyone else wants to partake in the entertainment?

He looked at the group, his eyes lingering a little more on Styx, as if expecting him to fight too. Wind raised his head from the food and used a claw to pick at a piece of pork wedged between 2 teeth, oblivious to the entire conversation.

The rules are simple. No armor, no weapons, no magic. The combat is over when one combatant yields or is unconscious. Try not to permanently injure your opponent, we do try to keep our entertainers wanting to come back. Our friends from the temple of Selune do offer some healing at a modest fee. If you win, you can easily afford it… If you lose…

He shrugged, obviously not concerned by the fate of the losers.

Of course, there is some betting, the odds are determined by our bookmakers when everyone is registered. With someone new and exciting in the ring like you, Miss Kali, it is going to be a very interesting night!

That is very kind of you Ognib.  We'd love to be your guests this evening.

Regarding the fighting ring, I'm more of a lover than a fighter Ognib, but that's never stopped me before, on either front!  I'd be happy to join in the fisticuffs as well that job you mentioned, however, it all depends on the length of said job.  I only have the evening available, as tomorrow I have other plans.  I'd love to work out some future arrangements, upon my return though and if I meet the requirements of the position you have in mind.

For tonight though, both would be welcomed, unless you have something other than the fighting ring you need me for?

Styx smiled.  Tonight was going to be a fun night.

There's only an hour until the fighting starts! I'd better finish eating quickly so I can keep my energy up throughout the fights. If I win, from the sounds of it, I'll have to fight several times tonight.

You mentioned healers were there, let's say I win my first fight, do I have time and the means to heal before the second fight or is that against the rules? I just want to know for clarification before the event starts. I'd rather not be disqualified for getting healed if I'm not allowed to, but at the same time, if everyone else is coming into the fights fresh, I don't want to be the only one that isn't.

I took a few more bites of my roast and potatoes while I waited for Ognib to answer my questions.

My my my, don’t you worry Miss Kali, you will have some time to get healed between fights… if you win, it will not be a problem.

Ognib winked at Kali, still twirling his mustache between his fingers. He turned his sly gaze to Styx.

That is too bad that you are only here for one evening mister Styx, I’m certain someone with your sharp eyes could make a fortune here. And there’s no better place to do that than with the Spitting Mermaid!

The gnome finished his cup of wine and jumped down from the chair he was perched on.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go register miss Kali in our entertainment, and my guest of honor should be arriving soon. The chief bookmaker will be announcing the start of the festivities, simply listen to his instructions! You will be seated in my box, someone will be guiding you there.

He bowed at the waist towards the quartet and left, a mischievous spring in his steps, while muttering in his mustache.

I nurse my ale as the Gnome walks away. I'm not sure how I feel about being his, "box candy," for the night. To be fair, I'm probably the least interesting out of this particular group. If they only knew the truth.

Having gotten bored with the feather on the Gnome's hat Esa has drapped herself on the top shelf behind the bar, one leg dangling over the side. She turns her head to me and flicks her ears, "You could always join in his entertainment. It wouldn't be much but I'd welcome the snack."

"You heard the rules: no armour, no weapons, no magic, no thanks! I'd need to be scraped off the floor within the first 30 seconds. I'm sorry but we'll have to look for another opportunity."

The door to the inn opened with a bang, as a massive blue dragonborn entered, dressed in chainmail, a huge shield bearing the crescent moon of Selune at his arm. He looked around routinely, his gaze lingering on the unknown and unusual quartet, scaly eyebrows furled, as if evaluating them. After a moment, he seemed to react to a command behind him and moved aside, opening the way to two crescent mooned robed acolytes, one human man and a female half elf, that moved left and right, letting a fat blonde man come in, dressed in an extravagant robe with gold threaded crescent moons on a midnight blue brocade background. Ognib dipped low in front of the fat man, the feather on his turban brushing the floor.

I follow the acolytes, who follow the priest, who follows the gnome. My gaze scans the room with almost bored repetition. How many times have I done this? Follow Torinn, stay close Torinn, it's all a show. The priest is never in real danger, he pays the right people with donated coin to live this lavish life. The acolytes follow because they barley have free will anymore, but me I tire of this show. Oh, I know what I am, window dressing brought along to show off "his eminence's" power. "Look at the Dragonborn who guards me, he's a Paladin, how important must the church think I am." I hear it so much it echoes in my mind. Selune why is this my path, not to serve, not really, but to be a dancing marionette dragon.
My gaze stops at a group sitting together. A Bugbear, a Tiefling, and a Half-Elf together, that is a rarity, even in this place. At least something interesting. Maybe I'll even get to see them fight tonight, I'll probably be stuck against the wall, playing bodyguard, not protecting, not healing...useless.

Keep your eyes focused Acolytes, this is a dangerous place, filled with dangerous people. His eminence's safety is of most importance.

I hear the words leave my mouth with as much expression as I can muster, but my gaze is not on the priest but on the group seated near.

I perk up when the blue Dragonborn walked through the door, seeing the present moon of Selune on his shield. He must be one of the healers in the fighting ring. He could be fun to fight though. He looks like he knows what he's doing. My eyes glazed over the acolytes. They wouldn't put up enough of a fight to be worth it.

Your eminence, what a pleasure to have you with us tonight!

I glanced at Styx and whispered, Can you do that trick again on this guy? He seems pretty important and from Ognib's expression, he doesn't come here often.

My gaze lingered on the fat man, looking for anything distinguishing what his position here could be.

It appears we have a while before things start next door so I pass the time with idle conversation with my companions. Esa has settled down for the moment and is drowsing peacefully on the top shelf behind the bar when the door crashes open jolting her awake and I turn to see the what the commotion is.

The procession of Selunites is interesting: two humans, a half-elf, and a big armoured Dragonborn. He seems to be guarding the fat man with the ostentatious clothing. Are theses the healers Ognib mentioned for the fight?

A loud hiss sounds to my right and I turn back to the bar to see Esa sitting up on her perch, back arched, glaring at the fat man as he talks with the Gnome. "I want the large, fleshy one."

I turn back to eye the group, other than Ognib doting on the man I cannot see anything that would cause such a strong reaction in her. In over twenty years together I have never seen the like.

"I understand you want him but I'm not sure I can do it. You know the rules, I won't just kill someone because you're hungry I need more than that."

I look over his entourage again noting how the Dragonborn's eyes rove the room; thorough if disinterested, a man doing a boring task because he has too not because he thinks it's
 necessary. That might help.

"You know I want to help you but I can't beat these odds in a straight fight and there's little chance the others will help me if I throw down! I'll do it if its really important to you but you need to decide if this is worth my life. Are you willing to risk that the next person down the line will go along with you?"

Her tail lashes behind her and she flicks her ears at me, "Then we must look for another way."

These Dwarven Spirits are really going down smooth.  They must be hitting me hard though, because I swear I just saw a fucking Dragon walk in the door.  What the hell is following him, his next meal?  Oh wait, shit, are they really all followers of Selune? What are they doing HERE?  Are they checking up on me?  No, that doesn't make any sense.

I think the Dwarven Ale is inhibiting my ability to really understand what the hell they are doing here. Are they checking up on me?  No, that doesn't make any sense.  Wait, I already asked myself that, didn't I?  Not sure why I'm talking to myself.

I try to pull myself together.

Sorry Kali, I'm fucking hammered.  These ales are fanfriggintastic by the way.  We should probably order more.  Wait...you asked me something. Oh, yeah, I'm not going to be a help at all, if that isn't blatantly obvious.  The only tricks right now, are the ones my eyes are playing on me.  Is that really a fucking dragon?

I try to pull myself together again, this time, thinking about what Selune expects from me.  I stand up and approach his eminence, careful to do so slowly, partially because of the drinking and partially because I don't want the dragon to eat me.  I'd be quite tasty.

It's a pleasure to meet you your eminemence.  I am Styx.  I myself am also a follower of Selune, and as you can see from her crescent symbol on my gloves, she guides my hands with her grace.  We've just shipped in, so I'm unfamiliar, but is Selune prominented here in the city?

My apologies.  Our friend Bingo has been kind enough to make us his honored guests, though not as honored as you of course, but the ale has been flowing quickly and I may have partaken too much in excitement for this evening's activities.  She made me do it though.

I hear it before I look over, the table scraping along the floor as he rises. There he is, the Bugbear has began actually approaching the priest and the gnome. It doesn't take a genius to see he's desperately trying to keep himself together. It's having the opposite effect as he appears even more drunk. Must be the Dwarven ale or something similar, I hear it has that effect on people or even Bugbears.

That's close enough my large friend...

I start to move to intercept him, he yammering on about Selune and following her as he pokes the Tiefling in the head, much to her displeasure. Before I can meet him she grabs his arm and gives him a stern talking to and he starts to backs down. I relax and step back, taking it all in. Looks like I figured out who wears the pants in this friendship.

She was right though and he did care.  Especially when it came to those that followed Selune.  He wouldn't want any of his actions to come between him and his goddess and now this evening was turning out to be more important than he ever expected.  He needed to get his shit together.

Scanning the tavern, he spots the young waitress.

Just a few minutes ago he had wanted us to drink more of the dwarven ales. It wasn’t really my place to be concerned with, but it would be if he made me look bad. I wanted to leave a good impression on the people in charge of this fighting ring. It could be an easy way to make some quick cash later on.

Alright the fat guy is occupied with Ognib and looking at him I doubt he will want to talk to a common sailor. Who will be the most likely to give me some information? The acolytes might; depends on how happy they are with their boss. Hmm, I think I will hold off on them for the moment. The Dragonborn then.

I stand up from the table and move towards him, making sure to be in his line-of-sight well before I reach him. Do not want him to think I'm trying to sneak up on anyone. "Evening Sir. Do you have a moment?"

The Half-Elf rises and slowly approaches, his eyes trail from the priest, to the acolytes, finally resting in me. He approves and asks for a moment of my time, time is something I have an abundance of to be honest. I move to ask the priest if I may step away but I am greeted with a dismissive wave of his hand, as he is far to deep in his conversation with the gnome to even give me a moment. I don’t even hide my disdain. I reorient my emotions as I turn toward the Half-Elf.

Apparently I do good sir. How may I help you?

I move my hand and offer an aside facing away from the table and my associates. At least someone new and I certain interesting.

Styx almost made a fool of himself as he approached the High Priest of Selune, slurring his words and nearly pocking Kali on a horn. The man, almost 2 feet less than the bugbear, still managed to look him down and said in a prim condescending voice.

If you are following Selune, you should know that She’s everywhere Her divine light shines. Once you have sobered up, you can come worship Her in our temple on the hill before the castle.

Disinteresting himself of the rogue, he turned his attention to Ognib, that led him towards the back, the two speaking in a low voice. The male acolyte dismissively waved the dragonborn away when he came to ask if there was something else he needed to do, as the half elf took a bulging bag with tinkling sounds coming from it and followed the fat man.

Lissy arrived with a pitcher of water at the quartets table before moving out answering another client, her moves graceful and economical. But there was something off at the table… Wind was nowhere to be found.

There was definitely something wrong with this picture.  If his time with Selune had taught him anything, it was that the clerics of Selune and their tenets were that of practicing humility and frugality.  Being in the service of Selune was to be accepting of all as equals, compassionate and understanding to all those in need.

This one so lavishly dressed and traveling in the name of Selune to such a place to make bets, made me believe that there is something off with this one.

I drank about half a pitcher of water and was already feeling better, my head clearing as the Dwarven ale leaving my system as quickly as it came.

As I started to stand up, Kali gave me a glare like, where the fuck are you going now? I did my best to reassure her: I'm fine Kali and feeling better already.  I'm going to head over and talk with Ersin and that Dragon fellow.  By the way, Wind is missing.  Can't believe you lost her.  I smile as I walk away, completely unconcerned that Wind was missing.

I head over to where Ersin and the Dragon are standing.

I leans in closer to them and drops my voice.

The priest has no real need of me. I am to keep away the common rabble and to maintain his appearance. As followers of Selune you know how she views excess and extravagance. I am merely part of the priest’s show.

I move back away from them, smiling. Normally I would not share this information with anyone but to be brushed away by both the priest and the acolytes has put me in a foul and sharing mood.

Know, that as a follower of Selune myself, I noticed the very same things you've mentioned, however, how can a cleric of such prominence boldly not follow her tenets?  While I don't know everything, gambling, while representing her, seems like a slap in the face if you ask me.

May I ask, why do you accept this without any recourse?  You seem to represent her well and justly, while your priest mocks her with his show of extravagance.

I turn my head back and forth with the sudden barrage of questions. Since he approached me first I’ll start with the Half-Elf, Ersin the Bugbear called him.

I’m not sure what your implying, good sir. I am a Paladin of her most holy Selune. As for casting spells to detect the presence of evil, which I assume is what you meant, we are in The Spitting Mermaid, I assume everyone here is evil. Yourselves included, no offense.

I turn to the Bugbear.

My name is Torinn-ra Orinth-a Barath-ra Erath-thu Selune-tha, but you may call me Torinn if that’s easier, and he is a priest not a cleric. He pontificates well but cannot perform the rituals.

I grit my teeth, trying to hold back the frustration in that sentence.

Yes, he is extravagant and makes some or many poor choices but they are his choices to make. He will have to face her holiness in the end. As will we all. My soul is clean, his is not, how is yours?

As the dragonborn was dishing out his frustration over his position to the two new arrivals, which he figured would soon forget all about this, a little commotion occurred near the end of the bar. Two men were accusing each other of having spilled the other’s drink and Ognib excused himself to the priest, running over to resolve this situation, the Selunite priest and half elven acolyte impatiently waiting for the dispute to end, so they could get away from the common rabble.

Very well, I challenge you, prove that us all here are evil. Do your woogie stuff and prove it!" I work to put as much indignation as I can into my voice.

"Woogie stuff?"

Ah Torinn. Thank you.

While I can understand those are his choices to make, it's against the tenets of Selune.  He should be called out on his digressions.  So, should he run around murdering people right on main street, that is acceptable, because only her holiness will judge him?  No, because the local militia would do something about it.  But aren't you the militia of the church per se?  Isn't it your job to ensure this shouldn't happen?  It seems your soul isn't as clean as you make it out to be Torinn.  Turning a cheek to what is happening in your position comes off as cowardice.  I'm not implying that, just an observation.

I raise my head up to the sky and say a small prayer. True this was unlike most evening here but now I have to prove my abilities to the Half-Elf and explain myself to some Bugbear. I kind of miss the quiet of being ignored. Where is that Tiefling when I suddenly need her. I turn back to Ersin...

I meant no offense to begin with, I don’t know you. You are in a place that has a notorious reputation. As the bodyguard of the priest I have to assume everyone is out to get him. Whether it’s true or not, so I apologize. As for the spell, I really don’t have what I need to show it even if I wanted to. Sorry for insulting your honor.

I slowly turns toward the Bugbear. I feel a little bad about insulting the Half-Elf but not for what I’m about to say to the Bugbear.

Cowardice? You speak of things you hardly understand. Does it bother me that the priest lives extravagantly using the donations give to Selune? Of course. Does it infuriate me that he gambled away the tithes that I have given to my goddess? Unquestionably. Is there much I can do about it? Hardly. He is the highest ranking member of the temple I’ve been assigned to, if I challenge him publicly it is his word against mine and he’s paid off most members of the church and civic leaders. So what exactly would that get me. Excommunicated, that what it gets me. How am I to serve glorious Selune if I cannot even stand it her halls, care for her people? Would he followers trust the exiled Dragon-man? Flowery words sound good but you see not the end of that road. I have, I do the best I can to help her people and if I have to turn my head to his choices I will. Justice will come for him soon or later. Do no judge me Styx, you do not even know me.

With that I push my way past them, not towards to priest but in a neutral direction, away from both. I hide my eye roll as much as I can. This is what I need tonight?

Well shit. Good to know that one keeps his brain separate from his scabbard; that might be important later.

"You could have just asked him to do it?" Esa mutters still glaring at the fatman.

"And how do I explain my suspicions to him?" Esa just flicks her ears at me. I thought so.

So from the sounds of it the guy is a douchebag and thoroughly corrupt but is that enough. He is a criminal but I prefer to stick with murderers or rapists. I still need more information.

I wonder what's in the bag? If its bad enough to get Big Blue over there to sit this out that would be good. And maybe it'll make me feel better about this.

I look over at Styx;he seems to feel something is off about the priest too. Maybe he would help. "Hey Styx, I'm getting a sense that something is very off about that priest. Are you interested in doing a little snooping?"

Damnit, Wind. I just have a feeling you are going to get yourself into trouble. While I would like to get a closer look at that Dragonborn, to snuss out his ability to fight, I believe he will likely keep Styx occupied long enough he won't need my supervision for long enough to find you. I get up from the table we were all sitting at look around the bar, trying to spot the Wind in the crowd.

Perception: 12

Remembering his affinity for heights, I look up and find Wind in one of the rafters. I groaned audibly. This cat is going to be the death of me. I am not a nanny!

I walked over to the base of the rafter and yelled over the din of the tavern to Wind,
Wind, what are you doing up there? Come down now! We have to head over to the fighting ring soon. We should all stick together so no one gets left behind.

Ognib had finally managed to calmed the 2 customers, the bouncer going back to its stool near the entrance. The half elf had deposited the bag on the ground during the altercation and was getting ready to pick it up, as the gnome came back to the priest, a drink that look expensive in his hand, that he offered to the fat man. Taking it without even a thank you, he took a large swig of it, as Ognib cringed, knowing how fine this elven liqueur was.

That was when that another point of interest occurred, as Kali yelled at Wind to get down from the main beam of the roof, attracting the attention of the patrons seated at the few tables around her.

Wind was having fun studying the humans from his perch and had even started to befriend a squirrel that lived up there when the strong voice of the tiefling reached him, making his ears twitch.

But the view from up here is much more fun! Did you know that this man over there is hiding a bald spot under that hair?

He pointed strait at the fat priest, speaking loudly enough to be heard by both his shipmate and half the inn, including the Selunite delegation, enticing nervous laughs from some patrons, quickly shushed by other, looking fearfully at the glaring priest.

Styx smiled to himself.  The confession he needed to confirm his suspicions...at least some of them.  He knew the guy was crooked, but there was still something more...

As Torinn pushed past him, he put his hand on his shoulder, lightly, to show he was not forcing anything by it and said:

You are right Torinn, Cowardice is something I will never understand.

Please know that I'm not judging you, though I know it sounds that way, I just want you to see that you have more power over the situation than you might think.  You are obviously unhappy with your position, with whom you protect, and there is always a way to serve Selune and in this case, it's by bringing him down.  That is what is best in Selune's eyes and I think you've known that all along.  This may sound crazy, but help us stop him, not for me, but for Selune and all those he dishonors by what he does.  You know that if you do the right thing, Selune will always be with you, as she is with me.

What do you say, will you join Ersin and I in uncovering what is going on?  If you're worried about how you might come out in this, just help us, without performing the deed itself.  Is there any information you can tell us that we don't already know about him?

Let's get to snooping Ersin.  You know I'm definitely in.

I rubbed my temples, Wind just grabbed the attention of nearly half the patrons in the tavern. On top of that, he just insulted the important man Ognib referred to as his eminence. I would imagine the Captain would hear about us visiting the Mermaid if Wind got us all kicked out.

Do stop shouting so loud, Wind. If we get kicked out because of you, I'd bet the Captain will find out we are here. If I get stuck cleaning the privies because of you, I swear I will throw you out to sea. I haven't gotten to punch anyone yet. I pouted a little bit on the last sentence. I stop and roll my eyes back into place, I stared back at Styx.

Please remove your hand from me. So you’re saying I should turn against the leader of the temple of which I am part because you feel I’m not serving Selune the way you believe I should. I should risk all that I can do, from even my low position to prove what, that this is Selune’s will? Is it or is it your will? You presume much. I know who he is, what he does, I even know what’s in the bag.

I move past him and Ersin. I try to make my way toward the Tiefling. Perhaps she could help me with her companions. This night is taxing. What is your will Selune? Is it time for me to finally bring the priest to justice or should I continue on this path? If there was a time I need your divine guidance it’s now. I know it’s not coming from the Bugbear.

I know I’ll do what I have done since my childhood when I’m at a point of indecision. I move steadily toward the exit, walking past the bouncers and patrons with purpose until I’m there. I step out of The Spitting Mermaid and into her light. The Moon. Through my life it has been my beacon, my center point. Here I can calm my mind, sooth my thoughts and listen for her voice.

Ersin had mentioned we should see what was in the bag.  Worked for me.  Maybe it was something incriminating.

I was 7'11" and not someone who generally blends in well, but this wasn't my first rodeo and the distraction from above was enough for no one to bother or get in the way of a hulking bugbear as I quietly moved into a position behind the half-elf.

I saw my moment, when the Half-Elf looked off to the other side and went for it, quickly scooping up the bag, but at the same time, making sure that whatever was in the bag, stayed seated so as not to make any noise.

I nonchalantly found my way to a back corner table, well out of the view of the owner of said bag and before opening it up, I gently felt around the sides of the bag lightly, ensuring when I open it up there are no surprises.

OOOOOOHHHHH Kali, you’re no fun! You know cats don’t like water!

Laughing, the tabaxi clawed it’s way on all four to a main support post, deliberately choosing the one closest to the priest to climb down, head first.

Hahahaha, he looks like a bald dwarf now!

The fat man was furious at this moment, and turned to the gnome, glaring.

Is that how you tell your clients to respect authority, Ognib? I am the high priest of Selune, the High King comes to worship at my  temple! I could have this…. this… entertainment of yours shut down tomorrow! And the…. The guard will.. will raze this place! You will hang!

The priest was now shouting at the top of his lungs, and his round obese face reddening by the second.

But your Eminence, the Mermaid has nothing to do with those peasants that show no respect….

Silence! I have never been so humiliated, I am leaving right this moment, Asuni, Herven, Torinn, come!

The half elf named Asuni dropped her hand to pick up her bag and gasped audibly when she found only air. She started to look frantically for it, her eyes wide with fear, until the fat man slapped her hard, causing her to fall down.

And you stupid cow managed to lose our potions too? By Selune, this night is getting worse by the second! Torinn, arrest her! Torinn? TORINN! Where is that no good overgrown lizard?

I slam the door open, mostly for effect. The path is so clear to me now, why was it so clouded before. I march directly toward the priest, ignoring most everyone else. As I reach him my voice sharpens.

You bellowed, my lord? Fear not, for there will be an arrest here this night.

I look toward Asuni, still on the floor.

You have been viewed in the eyes of many and in the eyes of our most blessed Selune of treachery of the highest order. For no longer fulfilling your duties and making a mockery of the temple of which you are a symbol. How do you plead...

I hold out my hand to Asuni who nervously takes it and help her to her feet. I turn my head.

Your eminence?
Tonight I have heard not only your underhanded dealings with the owner of this establishment but a threat of using our temple’s influence on the crown to settle your petty slights, you have used donations to enrich yourself and now struck a member of the clergy that you are blessed to lead. By Selune’s grace this shall not stand
.

I grab the priest by his expensive robes and hoist him off the ground, bringing him close to my face as I snarl the next sentence.

Well, how. do. you. plead?

Exactly, Wind. I laughed while saying it though. His reaction was exactly as I expected.

However, Wind's comment had set the fat man into a rage. As he yelled at Ognib, he drew the attention of the rest of the tavern. I started to walk over to him, feeling myself get itchy. A sure sign I was antsy for a fight.

When I finally got close enough, I could see the spittle flying from his mouth as he bellowed,
And you stupid cow managed to lose our potions too? By Selune, this night is getting worse by the second! Torinn, arrest her! Torinn? TORINN! Where is that no good overgrown lizard?

As I was getting ready to interject, the front door slams open to reveal the Dragonborn seething. Ooooo, this could be fun. I made sure to stay close, I wanted to see him in action. And maybe I just wanted to hit the priest should this come to blows.

Oh, Lissy, do be a dear and fetch me another ale! This looks like it's about to be a show. Very entertaining! Ognib, great place you got here! Most fun I've had in a long time. Will definitely recommend this place to all my friends back home. I yell over to the bar, knowing the priest can hear me and that it will likely set him off again. Yes. This can work. Not how I thought it might happen but I'll take it. Turning to Styx I give him a small smile, "I'll be right back." before ducking off to into the crowd.

Once I have broken line-of-sight with Styx and my other crew mates I whisper a command and wave my hand in front of my face. It feels like a breathe of cold air washes over me. I continue moving towards the exit until I can see the fat man dangling in Big Blue's grasp. My hand grasps my focus as it hangs about my neck, I whisper the words Esa taught me and point at the priest. Esa suddenly appears gripping his left shoulder before leaning forward and sinking her teeth into his neck and a chill passes over me and I watch the priest shiver, his large belly trembling, as our essences align and I shift his to hinder his charm.

Now lets see how this plays out.

Summary:
Move away from Styx towards the exit.

It was hard not to hear what was going on with all the shouting, the loud smack of the priest to one of his acolytes, the laughter, including my own snickering, even though I had secluded myself to be out of sight with the bag of goods.

The priest was bellowing for an overgrown lizard.  Well, that wasn't going to end well for him.  I don't know much about the Dragonborn race, but I'm quite sure their pride is something sacred to them.

I didn't want to be the one to plant the seed and in a roundabout way accuse him of cowardice, but who knows when we'd be back here to deal with this again.  I didn't want to think of all the suffering he would cause in our time away and if then it would be too late. While my methods are unconventional, Selune's high priest herself gave me her blessing to do what must be done using my current skill set, and so I will.

As soon as Torinn began speaking, I knew exactly where it was going.  I'm glad he choose to take the right path forward, but should he join us, I know our relationship will be quite strained.  I'll give him the time he needs to understand why I did what I did.  Small price to pay for the upending of this priest's corruption.

More importantly, was what to do with these potions...fuck it, let's taste one!

Wow...that is bitter....and quite terrible.

UNHAND ME YOU… YOU.. BRUTE! I’LL HAVE YOU.. EXCOM.. EXPE…… CHASSED FROM THE…. THE… TEMPLE!

Still screaming, the priest suddenly seemed to have lost his way with words, his face red as a ripe tomato, as a medium size man with a scar on his face no one had seen before in the bar looked on, a fierce look is his eyes. Gesticulating at the end of the dragonborn arm, the fat priest lost one of his silken slippers, that dropped noiselessly on the floor.  Still suspended upside down on the support column, the tabaxi was looking on the scene, his green eyes not missing a beat, a low purr coming from his throat.

Holding her hand to her reddened cheek, the half elf acolyte was still looking on, terror on her face, mouthing some inaudible words. Her male counterpart bravely, or stupidly, approached Torinn, yelling at him to release the priest, but with a twinge of fear in his high pitched voice.

Ognib was pale as a corpse, stomping around, pulling at his beard, screaming at everyone to stop immediately, as the big bruising bouncer was raising from his stool and grabbing his cudgel, starting to move towards the paladin, the oldest serving maid approaching too, her hands bare, opening and closing, like she was warming up for something.

Not far, Kali was enjoying the show as Lissy distractedly brought her a beer, almost spilling it as she deposited it half on the edge of the table.

STUPID LIZARD, UNHAND ME THIS SECOND, THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING!

From my position just a few feet away, I see the priest pull a hidden dagger from his sleeve, the coating of poison slowly dripping to the floor. I grinned, I would get my fun after all and as a bonus, I would get to assess the skill of the Dragonborn!

I pull out my longsword and quickly swing it at the Priest's wrist, hoping to get him to drop the dagger before it can meet its mark.

The swing connected, although slightly higher than I had intended. The dagger tinking as it lands on the floor. Two small thunks were also heard among the other noises, blood starting to pool around the Priests feet. Looking closer, I saw the index and middle fingers of the Priest lying on the floor.

Quickly kicking the dagger away from the Priest, I bent down and grabbed his fingers. Looking the Priest right in the eye, I chomped down on the fingers as one would a carrot.

Blood dripping down my chin I whisper,

Suddenly everything happened so quickly I struggled to keep up. The priest, heavy in my hand is screaming at me. His words fall on deaf ears as I now know what I must do. He suddenly quiets and makes a motion with his hand, is it a weapon? He can’t cast spells, what is he doing? My mind is racing! Then the Tiefling surges forward and swipes, with a sword, I think. The priest screams I hear metal strike the stone floor along with something else. The Tiefling picks up something, stares at the priest and bites his now severed fingers. If I wasn’t scaring him she definitely is. I finally comprehend what she did...she just saved me. I look over to her and give her a smile.

(This only works if nothing changes to much) I stare back at the priest.

Remove me? You abuse her faith and for that it is you who will be dealt with tonight!

I look over to the male Acolyte.

Fear not release him I will!

I throw the priest as far as I can toward the bouncer. I turn and roar at the male Acolyte. I draw my battle axe. I have imagined this moment for so long and always fear the retribution, but now filled with Selune’s hope I fear nothing!

The scarred stranger lifted its hand and wiggled his fingers towards the priest, that screamed, arching his back in pain, just as the tiefling warrior, still out for blood, swung her sword, scoring another hit on he fleshy human.

The tabaxi roared and jumped down his perch, placing himself between the paladin and the maid, his hand raised in a peaceful gesture, telling the woman that there was no need for this violence, before receiving a massive kick in the gut, that felled him, winded.

The bouncer lifted his club and struck in the paladin’s back, the chain mail of the armor deflecting the blow, causing no real damage, as the roguish bugbear tried to pierce his opponent and failed. Angered by the blow in his back, the dragonborn turned around and threw the fat priest at the bouncer, that easily side stepped the fleshy mound, falling on the ground in a fatty thud, blood seeping from his wounds. The paladin then roared at the young human, cowing him, for now.

The bouncer looked at the massive paladin and the more slender female tiefling and decided to accept the challenge offered by the woman, swinging his club and connecting solidly (7 Bludgeoning on Kali), his second strike deftly blocked by the shield. Not wanting to be left out, Torinn slashed at the man, giving him a shallow cut, barely missing a major artery.

The young acolyte screamed a denial and started casting a spell, targeting the dragonborn that he had been sharing bread with in the last few months. But the paladin was truly blessed of Selune, the deity seemingly refusing to grant her spells to injure her champion of the moment and the spell fizzled in the man’s hand.

Suddenly, coming out of nowhere, a huge brown bear was roaring in pain and rage, his massive paw swiping at the poor maid that didn’t expect that and got mauled, barely avoiding the following bite. Recovering quickly, she struck blindingly fast at the bear, her two fists connecting, drawing more grunts.

And that was the last straw for those still in the bar, the patrons rushing at the exit in panic!

Something is very wrong here; this guy is all fucked up! As I withdraw my sword from his chest I notice movement near his head as a tiny quadrupedal creature appears. What the hell, is that a walking brain! I freeze for a second in confusion but Esa appears next to the creature and rakes its flank with her claws.

"This creature is an abominiation, destroy it!"

That explains a lot. Bringing my sword up from low guard I slice down at the creature. "There's something else here!" I call out as I return my sword to low guard.

Summary
Bonus Action: Shift Hex to new threat
Action: Attack with longsword (13 to hit, 6 slashing damage, 1 necrotic)

Styx hears Ersin call out about there being something else, the worry in his voice.  Looking over at the dead body of the priest before me, I see a small brain creature trying to scurry away before Ersin smacks it with his sword.  Following suit, I flip my sword around so I'm holding it, blade facing straight down, as I try to pierce the creature right through the center and pin it to the ground.

Initiative: 10
Attack to hit: 22, 20 (Advantage)
Damage: 10 damage

Styx thinks to himself, wondering if this brain creature is the cause of the priest's darker side, and if so, did he just kill an innocent priest of Selune who was just afflicted by this creature?  How could he have known though?

Lissy had managed to reach Ognib in all the commotion and was trying to bring him to safety, but the gnome would certainly not listen to a girl one-tenth his own age, as he watched his business partner get killed, only to have a brain-looking creature come out of him. Watching in horror, he saw  two of his trusted employees go down, the bouncer with a huge slash gushing blood across his ample belly, and the maid pinned by a huge bear hug, the beast catching her head between it’s massive jaw, the teeth millimeters away from piercing the eyes and crushing the skull.

Ognib might be a crook, but he certainly had loyalty towards his employees so he screamed with all the strength of his lungs, bravely running towards the battle, Lissy looking on, horrified.

ENOUGH! Tarsek, Helen, yield already!

And to the adventurers.

Don’t you know how hard it is to find good employees on this forsaken rock? Enough, I say ENOUGH!

Both the scarred man and the bugbear attacked the brain like creature, to find with horror that their blades just slipped on the carapace of the monster. However, a black mark did appear where the human struck the beast. Not a passive creature, it jumped at Styx, slashing him with its claws. (8 Slashing on Styx)

The human acolyte looked at his hands after the fizzle of his spell, realizing what he had done, so he disengaged from the battle, tears in his eyes. Asuni had been keeping away from the mayhem nursing her rapidly swelling jaw, turned her head toward the battle around the priest corpse and gasped audibly when she saw the brain creature, opening and closing her mouth, like she wanted so say something but was too shocked to react.

I watch as the Tiefling brings down the larger bouncer, I’m impressed with her speed and skill. I hear Ersin yell out and turn to see a creature of which I have never seen before crawl out of the priest! Ersin and Styx immediately attack it, I see the human acolyte stare at his smoking hand, he must have failed to cast his spell, has Selune forsaken him? Asuni sees the creature and looks horrified, from the creature itself or that it came from the priest she has been with for years I know not. I step in between her and the creature. I look over to the human, now stepping away from battle.

Do you see what it is that you still follow? This is not the priest but a monster, help us destroy what has desiccated a once good man. Asuni stay behind me!

I see that the Tiefling is injured, I reach out and place my hand on her. I pray and mend her wound. Hopefully she understands what I’m doing and doesn’t try to stab me. (Lay of Hand, 5 hp point to Kali.) Out of the corner of my eyes...wait when did that bear get here?

The strike was good but it didn't cut as I was expecting. Well shit!

"Your blow hurt me human... You will make a fine host!" I've only heard Esa's voice in my head before. This voice is twisted, alien. I don't want it in there. Sudden pain wracks my head and I flinch involuntarily. What was that? It felt like something was trying to scoop out my brain!

"Looks like magic is our best bet!" I call out hoping someone can do something to this thing.

Alright that didn't work, lets try something else. I shift my sword to a one-handed grip and keep it pointed at the strange creature and pull my other arm up, elbow back, and my hand up by my ear. I don't like trying this at close quarters but beggars and choosers right. The familiar chill runs down my arm and I thrust it forward at the creature and another bolt streaks towards it.

Well nothing was really going as planned for Styx tonight.  Why was he so off his game?  Was it the blatant corruption and mockery of Selune that infuriated him just enough to tweak his precision?  He was better than this!

He heard Ersin yell out to use Magic.  Given the fact that he didn't have any, that was going to be a problem.  What to do, what to do....

Ok, well, maybe piercing it doesn't work, but how about if my 336 lbs of awesomeness comes right down on top of it?  Not many choices at this point.

Styx tries to squash the brain by stepping on it with all his weight.

Ognib called his employees to disengage from us, probably thinking I would kill the bouncer as well as the Priest. I had no intention of killing his bouncer, not that he would believe me if I told him. However, now that I had finished with the bouncer, poor fellow, that wound was deep, I could take a look at what was hiding with the Priest that everyone is having a fuss over. Ognib, you might want to have a healer take a look at your man, my last hit on him was a good one. Looking to the man I had just been fighting, My apologies, sir, next time we should fight without the swords. I seem to be a bit too strong for you.

I heard a call from Ersin saying we needed magic to kill this thing. Not having magic put me at a disadvantage in this fight, so I moved forward cautiously. I looked around on the floor for the dagger I had kicked away from the Priest and picked it up. Perhaps poison would work in place of magic. Once I was close enough to get a look at the thing, I recoiled. I rubbed my eyes a bit and looked again. I still saw the same thing. There was a brain, walking around like that was a normal, everyday thing to see.

The scarred man yelled a warning about magic to be used and focused his energies to strike at the beast… but there’s a reason why magic users keep at a distance. The walking brain felt the temporary vulnerability and swiped its claws at him, cutting deep (8 Slashing Ersin) just as the spell’s energy struck the creature, that spasmed, imbedding its claws in the man’s chest. The rogue had abandoned to use his rapier, and stomped the ground hard, where he expected the creature to be, but it was already gone.

The tiefling had more luck, as she found the poisoned dagger of the dead priest, and hit the creature still implanted in the chest of the man, the fine edge of the blade penetrating the carapace that had resisted the blades before, making it’s legs spasm again. And to crown the exchange, the paladin brought his massive axe in a brilliant display of control, just shy of the man’s armor, to the creature’s body, to have his axe head rebound, but the holy energies followed through, the brain exploding in a gory mess, showering all four of them in reddish gooey matter, the rotting smell overpowering.

A few feet away from the battle, Asuni snapped from her shock and ran to Tarsek, her hands already glowing with white healing light. Herven was still a sobbing mess on the floor, and the bear released the maid with a huge arrumph sound, looked towards the already over battle, and started eating the discarded meals left by the clients that had fled the battle.

The creature leaped towards me, knocking aside my blade, claws extended as I released the blast. I watched as the bolt blasted deep into the brain and its back legs went limp even as its leap carried it forward. Yeah you got fucked!

Even as I thought that its claws tear into my collarbone and the base of my throat just above my breastplate. My vision starts to go black and I panic at the thought of passing out with this thing still active when I feel Esa's presence settle on my shoulder and warmth flows from her into me and I regain full awareness. Oh that was close.

The creature managed to get its claws stuck in the top of my breastplate and is hanging there, claws scraping against my skin, when Kali lunges and drives a dagger into the back of the brain and Big Blue cleaves the front legs off the thing with his glowing axe and the rest explodes in a burst of white light and disgusting red gunk. Gross!

It's over. I look over at Esa still perched on my shoulder looking pleased with herself. "I take it you got what you wanted."

"I did. You should be more careful; what would have happened if I wasn't here?"

"I'm glad. It would help next time if you can warn me that something is riding the guy. Poor bastard, I wonder how long his body's been that things meat suit?" Anyway I gotta get out of here. I don't want to get caught up if the watch decides to get involved.

I stumble over to the wall near the exit and try to get my strength back. As soon as Styx, Kali, and Big Blue look away I slip out the door and into the shadows between the buildings, whisper a few words, wave my hand in front of my face, and relax as the sensation of cold air washes over me.

Very nice to meet you Kali and agree we do make a formidable team. How is your wound mending?

Well, here we are our paths have traveled for a while together, but here they separate Selune is her wisdom has given me a new path. She has lead me to them. I must follow. The city guard will come, tell them what you will, but I hope it’s the truth. Tell the temple the same. May Selune watch over and protect you.

With that I join Kali and Styx as they leave the Spitting Mermaid and on to my new path, wherever Selune leads me.

Now wait a second, were do you think you’re going? Who’s going to explain this disaster to the king’s guards?

As the weird group was going towards the exit, the disheveled gnome jumped in their path and tried to block them, only to be roughly pushed aside by a paw bigger than it’s entire body, as the bear joined the companions. Ognib rolled on the ground, in a way that would be comical if the situation was not so serious and ended up seated on his behind, fuming.  Kali called out that the bear was Wind, and the beast turned it’s head towards her, showed its teeth in a weird smile and blinked, before belching in the direction of the gnome.

This is not the last of it, I know where you are, the guard will come to arrest you!

They will do no such thing, Ognib.

The crook looked up and saw Asuni there, looking at him, dead serious.

The way I see what happened tonight, those brave souls saved the temple of Selune and the town from the evil influence of a monster, that had taken control of our high priest. Tarsek will survive, the only deceased is the priest.

She looked at the priest corpse with a weird vacant expression, her eyes wide, before sighing and shaking her head, visibly fighting to keep control.

The temple of Selune will need a new leader. Torinn, you showed your righteousness in the eyes of Selune, demonstrating more bravery than I ever saw. You would be a beacon of light that others would flock to, in the wake of the revelation that we have been following an evil creature all those years.  Will you be this light for us?

Her tone was meant to be brave, but the undertone was almost pleading, her hand unconsciously gripping her robes tight.

I know not why but I obey her will. You should come too. I do not know what happened to you at her temple at the hands of this monster but I know this, you would be safer away from that place. As i can see this group of heroes could use a good healer and you show so much promise. There are many ways to serve the Moon and not all are in her houses of worship. I am glad Asuni is coming along as well, whatever happened at the temple has hurt her, badly and I’m glad to help remove her from that place. I look to Kali...

We will be a pair to be feared! Hahaha! True we will have to find a way to play to each other’s strengths, but we will and I feel be better for it. As for fun, we will definitely find that!

I look to Styx and Ersin, I ease the laughter but keep the smile.

I thank you all for being so welcoming to us We will earn our keep, that I can promise you. Hard work is no stranger to we who have served in the Temple of Selune. I am strong and Asuni shows much promise as a cleric. Now we should make our leave of this place.

As we prepare to leave I feel a sensation of warm fill me, I could easily say it is knowing I am in the right path Selune has put me on but that is only part of it. To be energetically accepted but Kali and to be Asuni’s believed beacon mean more then I would admit. Of the many places I’ve been in the last few years this feels right and I feel happier then I have in a long time. Perhaps I found what I’ve been looking for.

The look of relief on the half-elf’s face was almost painful to see, and she hugged the dragonborn, murmuring “thank you” over and over again. Apparently, she didn’t want to stay either! After a moment she disengaged from the paladin and wiped her eyes with the sleeve of her robe, conscious of the looks of her new found companions and gave a shy smile to the assembly.

At that moment, the bear finished up another pork roast portion and Wind decided that he had played enough and cancelled his druidic magic that allowed the transformation, returning to his mischievous self. He yawned, belched and stretched, before looking for his opponent and winked at Helen, the maid/bodyguard still traumatized that she had almost died at the paws of a brown bear.

As the company was leaving the inn, the clopping of running booted feet was heard coming towards the Mermaid, the wildly swinging lantern light creating a weird show of shadows and light, as a patrol of royal guardsmen was quickly responding to the disturbance report…

Hearing that, Asuni started to prepare herself for the arrival of the guards, wiping her eyes again and pushing her auburn locks out of her face.

Let's head South to Cymrich Street, make a run for the Market and blend in with the crowds leaving.  That should give the guards enough time to check the docks for us and already be on their way somewhere else, so we can head back to the ship.  We could also take to the water or underneath the docks if we need to, though hopefully it won't come to that.  I'm sure Torinn in his heavy armor wouldn't appreciate that.

Probably a good idea too if Torinn and I stick together should the party get separated.  We are both large and much easier to notice in a crowd.  If we were all together or we split Torinn and I into 2 separate groups, that makes everyone more susceptible to be found.  If it's just Torinn and I, we can keep the rest of you safe, by having them follow us.

Should that happen, we'll just meet back on the ship by midnight.  That work for everyone?

You and I are well know here, but our new friends are not this puts them at the scene of a crime. We attacked the high priest, even though he was controlled by a monster he is still dead. To be honest I don’t know if the gnome will support our claim of a monster. He’s very angry for harming his staff. Yes, we are covered in monster remains but I don’t know if they will believe that’s what it is. Also The Drunken Mermaid has a nasty reputation and we were just there fighting. From our point of view it makes sense but from their view not so much. I would rather avoid them if it means having to fight them, I wouldn’t want to hurt them. Then we would definitely be criminals. Are you still willing to come?

I noticed the group of people Styx was attempting to blend in with and moved to the far side of him and sped up my pace so I was ahead of him a few lengths. I wanted to be able to see any upcoming guard patrols before we got close enough to them that they would notice us. I wanted time to pull everyone together and plan before we possibly had to separate.

Also, we needed to find a bathhouse or a fountain large enough that we could clean up our armor. We will have a harder time blending in with monster goo all over us.

Perception:14

Roughly 150 yards ahead of us stood a barrel of rainwater. I can clean myself off so I can stop holding both these weapons. It's awkward and I don't like it.

There's a barrel of rainwater up ahead. We can use it to clean ourselves off, I turned to look at everyone when I said it and then picked up my pace to get there first.

First, I grabbed a cloth out of my pack and dipped it in the water and wiped the drying blood off my longsword. I dried it on one of my extra shirts before putting it back in its sheath. I did the same for my shield and the dagger I took off the priest. It felt like more than just a dagger laced with poison, but I did not have time to ponder that right now. I adjusted my belt and put the new dagger in it, hoping not to cut myself before I found a weapons vendor that may have an extra sheath I could purchase for it. I knew it would take a little more time and effort to get all the goo out of my armor than I had time for, I wanted to get the majority of it off so it wasn't noticeable to those not looking for it.

Once I was done, I made room for anyone else who wished to use it.

I watched quietly as the others merged with the crowd and moved away from the docks before turning to watch the approaching lantern of the patrol. This was a really bad idea, but it's not like they had anything to arrest me for. If that matters to them.

"You know this is going to end badly right?" Esa commented, her tail flicking side to side while she watched the approaching patrol.

"Probably. But either way it may make a decent story later.

Two of the guards are carrying lanterns with the hoods raised casting back the shadows of the deepening night and making them easy to see in the street. Four of them appear to be human though it is difficult to tell in their issue chain shirt and uniform and behind them a pair of halflings are struggling to keep up with their long-legged companions but managing to do so. It's rather impressive.

I stand just inside and to the left of the door of the Spitting Mermaid as they come to halt outside before four of them push their way inside and begin to take in the scene. The one in front, a large human woman nearly as tall as myself and nearly half-again as wide at the shoulder, pushes to the open space around the priests body and kneels down to inspect the body. She takes note of the obvious wounds and stands back up.

"Somebody better tell me what in all nine hells happened here!" She roared, clearly she is used to speaking over a crowd.

"This should be interesting," Esa has returned to the bar and is sauntering across its surface before turning to face me, "what do you think they will say?"

"I don't know but I may need a little help persuading her." I reply as I try to move somewhere where I am mostly screened from the guard but can see her. Just got to wait for the right opportunity.

Intent: wait for a moment when I do not think I am being observed and cast Charm Person on the lead guard.

Heeding Kali's words, I quickly rush up next to her, and splash the rainwater onto my leather armor, rubbing vigorously with the heel of my hand and using my nails for the stickier parts.

Once satisfied with the results, I closed my cloak around me, moved to the other side and waited for the others to finish, keeping a look out for any guards or anything out of the ordinary.

It was those new arrivals, Sergeant Hiflan, somehow they got the High priest angry and his own bodyguard even attacked his holiness! He said some nonsense about not following Selune and corrupting the temple, I was too far to fully understand. You have to catch them! A bugbear, a tiefling, a man with a scar  and the…

The disheveled Ognib shuddered recalling that episode.

The tabaxi is a bear! My poor poor Helen will have scar from that encounter! Tarsek is only alive because of the quick intervention of Asuni, the acolyte!

The woman frowned, trying to piece the evidence she was seeing with the ramblings of a known swindler that obviously had a bad day.

Any other witnesses? You sir, have you seen any of all this?

The woman pointed toward Ersin with her spear, her attitude extremely tense. She knew she needed to solve this murder quickly, the deceased High priest was an acquaintance of the High King after all!

Meanwhile, the rest of the party quickly washed off the worse of the monster gunk from their person, and, sticking to the shadows, they listened for more patrols on the alert. The tabaxi had already climbed up a three story building and gave the thumbs up to the party. No patrols around, for now.

It's show time; I really hope this works.

"Yes I did Sgt. The situation was very hectic and think it overwhelmed Mr. Ognib there. First, the priest started yelling and threatening everyone before he lost it and struck his acolyte. Judging by her body language, I am sad to say it was not the first time. His bodyguard took exception to that, grabbed him saying he was arresting him in the name of the temple of Selune. The priest then drew a knife and tried to stab him but the Tiefling intervened. By then the bouncer and the barmaid had gotten involved and the Tabaxi and the Tiefling were forced to defend themselves. By then the priest was down and out popped this tiny monster, I don't know what it was but it looked like a brain on four legs, and a scarred human and the Bugbear were trying to kill the thing." I say quickly pointing at the the remains of the creature near the priest's body. "Afterwards the injured acolyte was upset and babbling so the bodyguard took her away to calm her down and the others left."

The female guard frowned, trying to picture the scene that Ersin had just described, looking around. Ognib kept jabbering that they should run after the bugbear and his party, to which the Sergeant relented with a frown, asking one of the humans of her patrol to warn the other patrols. The man nodded and took a small crystal in his hand and casted a simple spell, before telling his superior that the deed was done. Ognib looked Ersin with a triumphant glimmer in his eyes, has if to say “you might not be involved, but your friends are done for.”

Outside, loud whistles started to be heard, as the patrols were getting organized in their search for the companions. Wind jumped to another roof, disappearing from view, as Asuni started trembling, her eyes wide, not expecting to be a fugitive on her first hour away from the evil priest!

Shit, since when do harbour guards do magic! Okay how do I redirect them?

"If you feel you have to speak with them I can tell you where they were going." I say looking her straight in the eye trying to inject as much sincerity into my voice as I can. "The bodyguard and the acolyte headed back to the temple of Selune. Given how upset she was she wanted to go somewhere familiar. The others have headed to our rooms at the Drunken Boar near the market square."

"Not your best effort, but not terrible. You might not end up in jail." Esa purred rubbing herself against the Sgt's leg.

"Your confidence in me is appreciated. Hopefully its enough to get them spread out in the wrong direction."

The woman gave Ersin a brief smile, a hint of gratitude in her eyes. Calling on the magic user, she had those new information relayed, as one of the halfling approached her, holding what seemed to be part of the rear paw of the monster the half-elf had helped killed just a few moments before.

It seems like your monster story might hold after all, good sir. Could I have your name and where are you from? You are not from around here that much is obvious. You understand, I’ll need it for my report.

Jensen the barman had reappeared from behind the bar, his hiding place during the battle and was now conferring with Ognib, both having a stiff drink in front of them.

Outside, the focus of the whistles seemed to change, one group going towards the castle, the other more to the east.

I wash the filth from my armor with the water Kali found, then we start to move through the crowd trying not to draw attention to ourselves. As much as we can being a Bugbear, Dragonborn, Tiefling, and a Half-Elf. We hear the whistle, even those of us not from this city knows it’s meaning, they are coming, the city guard. We wait for the sounds of hard boots in cobble stone streets. At first the draw closer. Asuni’s eyes grow wide with nervousness and fear. I take her hand...

Easy Asuni, it is all right. I know how you feel, really I do. I feel the same way, how this night began I would never believe where we are now. It is alright, if they come and find us I assure you they will not take you, I won’t let them. You have done nothing wrong. Selune has guided us this far down a path better then we knew, I feel she will continue. Come on, quickly and quietly.

The boot steps grew louder, then slowly began growing softer and softer. We made haste to our destination.

Now that everyone was clean, ready to go, and huddled together by the barrel, Styx though it best to give some advice...some of which might actually be helpful:

Alright everyone, if you have cloaks, cover your heads, keep to the left side of the street, so we are as far as possible from the street the patrol is on.  Keep your heads down as much as possible, and try not to make any eye contact.  The less people that can identify us later, the better.  I'll lead and keep an eye on the alleyways and where we are going for any signs of trouble.  Torinn, why don't you take up the rear and do a second check, so we are covering the length of ourselves, in case anything changes.

I'm thinking we'll need to take the long way around the market, to buy us the time needed for Ersin to send them in the wrong direction and get them out of the area.  So I suggest we head left first, skirt around the perimeter of the market behind the tents and out of sight of the majority of the crowd, then near the NE corner of the market, head towards the docks and keep close to the water and away from the Spitting Mermaid.  Any questions?

At the Sgt's nod I expedite my departure from the Spitting Mermaid. I can't believe that worked!

"I didn't think that would work; it wasn't very creative. Do you think she has brain damage?"

"I doubt it; she has bigger things on her mind right now than one shifty bystander. Anyway, I find it's best to keep as much truth in your lies as possible. It helps you keep them straight and they will hold up better."

Once back on the street I head back towards the dock but take a few detours farther east to see if anyone appears to be following me. I do not see anyone but I duck into an alleyway and pause for a minute to see if anyone enters.

Seeing no one, I backtrack along the dock to the White Swan. I hope whoever has the watch knows where I can find the captain. It's best that I prime him to accept a couple of extra hands come tomorrow.

Ersin, pretty proud of himself, managed to escape all patrols by taking a mostly straight line towards the White Swan, hoping that the rest of the group would be there by now. They were not. The night watch on the ship, an mid thirties human named Ernesto, challenged the half elf, but receiving the appropriate answer, let Ersin come on board, curious as to why his shipmate came back during shore leave. Ersin countered by asking where the captain was. Ernesto simply pointed towards the huge castle dominating the landscape, west of the city, shrugged and picked up his lantern to continue his round.

For the others, the plan Styx had formulated was more convoluted and brought the group to the outskirts of the now pretty much deserted marketplace. Light was spilling from the second floor of some buildings, probably the living space of the owner of the shop it was perched on, the flickering light from the street lamps creating more shadows than it dispelled. Across the plaza, a lone traveler was hurrying toward his destination, his clothes of a simple design.

Stopped to evaluate their options, Styx started to hear angry voices coming from uphill, the light from a rapidly moving lantern coming their way…

Seeing the lantern light up ahead, I had a feeling a new patrol was coming down the street we were on. I gathered everyone around,

Alright everyone, the patrols don't seem to be heading toward the docks looking for us, they seem to be concentrating on the city itself. Perhaps we should head back to the ship, we did agree to meet back there by midnight should we be separated. Ersin might be there by now and wondering where we are. I'm sure we can find somewhere to hide onboard that the patrol wouldn't find us should they come aboard to look for us.

Quickly looking down the side streets and alleyways, I determined which street would be the best one to take to avoid the patrols by the Spitting Mermaid and called everyone to follow me.

Seeing the patrol at the end of the street we were on was not good. I turned left at the opening of the street we were in front of and motioned for everyone to follow.

I want to try and lose them, it's a basic maneuver but we basically make a square around them and hopefully we can just avoid them altogether. If this patrol has any particularly intelligent guards, it might not work though. I am open to any other suggestions you may have if this doesn't work.

I make it to the intersection and take a right, hoping the guards were too far away to see which way we turned on this street. At the next intersection, I make another left. At this intersection, I make a right and slow my pace to a walk to not draw any more attention from passersby. We were nearing the docks, as we come to the next intersection, we are able to see them at the end of the street. We pick up our walking pace and hurry down the road to where we knew the White Swan was docked.

With that, Styx reached and removed one of his pouches from his bag, untying the string and getting it ready.  When the guards were within 30 - 40 feet, Styx rushed around the corner and emptied the contents of the pouch, by sweeping it across the mouth of the street and sidewalk, focusing more on the inside corner where the patrol would turn.  1000 ball bearings came tumbling out of the bag as Styx ran straight ahead, stopping at the mouth of the street bearing NW, waiting to see if his plan worked.

Tymora was feeling capricious this night, having a blast watching as the seemingly easy escape turned into a chaotic pursuit. The group turned out of view of the patrol by turning north and dashed ahead, or attempted to anyway. The poor Kali stumbled on a raised cobble in the street as she ran for it, causing even more noise attempting to recover her footing. The frightened Asuni collided with Torinn trying to avoid the floundering tiefling, in a merry mess of things.

The sly Styx had other ideas though and waited just out of sight, for the right timing to drop a thousand ball bearing on the street, the moment arriving as Kali was clanking away. Deftly, he spread the metallic balls, their tinkling sounds drowned in the noise the warrior was doing. Chuckling to himself, he stayed in the shadows to witness the result of his trap.

He didn’t have to wait long. Completely oblivious to the danger, the men in royal guard garb turned the corner and Styx could almost hear Tymora laugh hard, as four of the six patrolmen slipped on the balls, falling in a heap of flailing limbs and  clashing weapons, the hooded lantern spinning wildly on the ground, light quickly alternating with shadows in the street. The other two ran on after near slips, but having lost their source of light, they could only depend on the feeble light from the street lights and the noises of the creaking armors to try to catch the fleeing adventurers

*******************

Meanwhile, back at the boat, the nervous knock at the door of the wizard’s cabin did not elicit any apparent answer. Ersin was about to knock again when he noticed the wizard’s familiar lizard coming out of a small hole over the door. The creature stood there, flicking it’s tongue at the half elf, watching him with unblinking eyes, its clawed foot tapping impatiently on the wood.

I don't know if other officials have also been taken but it may impact the Captain's negotiations. Crewmen Styx and Kali killed the creature after it left the priest's body and are currently attempting to evade the Watch."

"I never know what to say to these people. They just don't think like us."

The two men still standing jumped when  a quarrel bolt clattered on the cobble stones near them but started running toward Styx. As the other guards tried again to get up, vines erupted from underneath them, grabbing them and pulling them down again as a mocking voice rose up.

Run Moonbeam, run!

Running as fast as they could, the tiefling, dragonborn and half elf reached the waterfront with no other incidents, but the dreaded whistle started again…

The door silently opened and the lizard folk, dressed in a casual green and blue robe, wearing a black cape, emerged, his eyes inexpressive, the lizard jumping on his shoulder. He looked down on the smaller half elf, with an expression that could either mean “I wonder how you taste” or “are you bullshitting me”, it was hard to tell. Fuck. I guess I'm going to the Drunken Boar after all. All I wanted was to get a new book and find somewhere reasonably priced that doesn't move to read it but no I have to be running around dealing with this shit! I was going to watch the fights and have a drink or to first but I didn't think I was asking for too much.

I wave to Ernesto as I pass him on the way back down the gangplank to the dock. "Hey Ernesto, Kali and Styx might come by with a Dragonborn and a Half-Elf in tow. We need to get them onboard and squared away so the Captain can decide what to do with them.". He waves in acknowledgement and I continue on.

I make my way back towards the market and after a couple blocks I duck into an alleyway and wave my hand in front of my face. I pause another minute before I exit the alley and make my way towards the Drunken Boar.

I soon see the sign from earlier and hear the familiar sounds of a dockside tavern and head in that direction. I go down a short set of stairs and push passed a pair of drunk human dock workers and through the door into the main room of the tavern, the warmth of the fire and smell of old spilled beer washing over me. It's not fancy but I have seen much worse dives in my short years. It's crowded hinting at either decent food, drink, or service or that there is not much in the way or competition. I keep my eyes open for a particular head of red hair and it only takes me a moment to spot her in the back right corner as she slams a tankard down as she finishes her drink before thrusting her hands above her head in victory, laughing uproariously at the man across from her who's choking on his own drink. Fantastic.

Meanwhile, Esa is hopping from table to table sniffing at the drinks as she goes, her nose wrinkled in distate. "Oh Little One, you take me to the most wonderful places."

"You heard nearly all the stories I have. Aren't adventures supposed to start in places like this?" I reply with a slight shrug "Lets talk to the First Mate so we can get this over with."

I have to take a winding route through the tables as people of varying levels of sobriety  move around the room and I avoid the barmaids as they work the room. Judging from what one of the larger woman is displaying and overheard comments its not just drink and food on the menu. I make it to the First Mate's table just as the she finishes talking to the spluttering man across from her and money changes hand. Good hopefully she will be in a good mood; just in time for me to ruin it.

"Excuse me Ma'am, there's been an incident with some of the crew I think you need to be aware of."

She  looked a little unsteadily towards the back bar looking for someone, looked back at Ersin, back to the bar and back to the disguised half elf. Frowning, she rose and tried to grab Ersin’ shirt but failed as her legs betrayed her, avoiding falling down at the last second by holding after the table. Her tone was no less fierce when she bellowed towards the bar.

Hector come back here this instant!

She looked again at Ersin.

And who are you, changeling?

Just then the half elf could see the real Hector rapidly approaching, holding four mugs in his hands….

Hector got to the table and dropped the drinks on it, the beer wildly swinging in the mugs, spilling some on the table. Taking the chair vacated by the loser of the last drinking game, he eyed Ersin with a look that signified that he did take it personal. Pushing two mugs toward the woman that was just sitting back on her chair, he hesitated before pushing another mug towards Ersin, before taking the last one and downing a swig.

Now what’s that problem that got that cold blooded lizard to move?

"Kali, Styx, Wind, and I went to the Spitting Mermaid to watch the fights. While we were there the local high priest of Selune went nuts and a scuffle happened between him and his bodyguard. Kali intervened when the priest tried to knife the bodyguard and all hell broke loose. In the confusion the priest was killed and some weird brain creature popped out and Styx helped kill it. Afterwards the bodyguard and an Acolyte left with Styx and Kali and I think they want sanctuary on our ship. I warned Sandron about it and that we didn't know if any other important locals are meat-puppets so he went to tell the Captain and told me to find you."

The White Swan

I heard Wind say my name while talking to Styx. They must have made it back as well. I stood up from where I had been sitting in the shadows watching for them and sauntered over to where they stood.

Sitting here waiting for you lot to show up. I think at the next port I want to buy new armor though. This set makes a lot of noise. I get myself into enough trouble the way it is. Where do you think Ersin disappeared to? I haven't seen him yet.

Kali, is that you down there?

Ernesto’s lantern poked over the railing and his wind burned face appeared, eyes squinting.

Ah! It is you. Ersin did say Sandron sent him to fetch Machrel at the Drunken Boar. He’s probably still there. Are those the dragonborn and half-elf he said you would be dragging with you?

**************

Machrel and Hector looked at each other after Ersin’s story and the woman frowned, looking back at the warlock and was about to speak before the wiry man put his hand on her forearm, shaking his head.

There are more pressing things, Mach, all in due time. We have to get the crew assembled, now.

Anger still in her eyes, the woman nodded and took hold of a rock she had on a necklace, closing her eyes for a moment. When she opened them again, they were clear, as if she hadn’t been drinking at all.

Barking a few orders, she dispatched crewmates to go in the other inns of the city, which they obeyed without question… if the first mate was worried enough to order a general call, they knew it was in their best interest to get moving! She then turned to Ersin.

I’m not done with you or the others with you, you’re coming with me.

Not even waiting for a reply, she rose and left, Hector and Ersin in tow.

"Why do I get the sense they are considering shooting the messenger?"

"Because you aren't a moron."

I smile at the comment and stand to follow them once more waving my hand across my features and feeling the chill. He doesn't want me to pass for him; lets see what he thinks of this!

"I take it back."

Yes, quite graceful of you Kali.  I've never seen moves QUITE like it...well except this one time I saw an Eladrin woman slip on some spilled beer, when singing from atop a bar.  Long story that one, but quite comical.  Another time perhaps.

So what's the plan?  Any news?

No news yet. Ersin hasn't returned from fetching the First Mate. The wizard went to go get the Captain from the castle. I suppose we wait until they get back and find out if we are being punished or not. We might as well go aboard and wait for everyone to get back.

We could always play some dice or cards while we're waiting.  Ernesto, you in?  Anyone else?

Styx secretly hoped this might be his chance to make the extra money he was banking on at the fight club tonight.

The White Swan

As we approach the ship it’s my chance to see one up close. My occasional wondering around the city have taken me to the docks every now and then. I’ve always loved the ships, the majesty, the freedom the represent. Never would I have thought I would be boarding one, especially one such as The White Swan. Asuni takes my hand, she’s hesitant. I wonder if she’s ever been on a ship before or for an extended period of time. I look down at her eyes, flitting back and forth from the ship to me. I tighten my grip on her hand slightly to reassure her our decision is the right one. I smile, she smiles a small smile back. I am very glad she came.

So we are still awaiting some of the crew? Hopefully they make haste. The longer we’re here the better chance the watch will find us. Careful Kali, I don’t want you hurt. We may need both of our skills if things go bad.
Sorry Styx, I don’t play games of chance. Seen too many people loose way too much.

As we walk onto the ship I feel a sense of excitement. We’re actually doing this leaving all of this behind us. I breath deep. Selune, I truly hope this is the path you chose for Asuni and me.

The White Swan

Styx, Kali, Torinn and the rest had just come onboard when Styx engaged Ernesto to play cards, which he refused until Wind told him that he would hold the watch for him. The players set up a small table on the deck and the cards started flying, and money moving from one side of the table to the other, but to anyone proficient in the game, it was obvious that Styx was leading the poor man by the nose. After letting him win a moment, the bugbear slowly got the pile of silver growing on his side, always letting Ernesto believe that he had a chance in the rigged game. The game continued for about 30 minutes when the din of the crew coming back to the ship, most of them in various conditions of drunkenness, and in a foul humor put a stop to it, Styx fleecing Ernesto of almost all his advance, gaining 8 gold.

And just in time too, as the melodious bellowing of Machrel was being heard approaching the ship. Instantly, most of the crew sobered up, or tried to, and started looking busy, some preparing the ship for departure, even without orders, others starting on the needed repairs. Finally, her words started to make sense to everyone.

Ersin, stop doing that! I could have killed you at the boar for that!

Finally, maybe not so much sense. Some onlooker looked at the little gaggle, composed of the first mate, her best friend Hector, and a weird femininized version of Hector, seemingly having the time if her(?) life. The man was fuming and thumping on the cobblestone, and only stopped walking roughly when  he reached the gangplank and crossed swiftly, the years of experience showing. The auburn haired woman followed and let her green eyes survey the scene, most of the crew already on board. Looking out towards the docks, she asked.

Now where are that lizard and the captain?

***************************

The captain had found someone to peak his curiosity and was amicably chatting with him when the Lizard Folk arrived on the scene and explained the situation to the half elf, in his usual brusque way. The captain was not pleased at the news, but agreed to accompany the Lizard folk. Him and Sandron had known each other for years, and he trusted the judgment of the wizard….

Still, intellect devourers were not something to laugh at, and he wondered how many of his contacts were already infected with the things, as the wizard ushered him in a carriage, giving the coach driver a cold look. The captain’s guest boarded the ride too, it’s weight forcing the half elf and lizard folk to huddle together just to keep the balance of the coach. After a bumpy 15 minutes ride, the carriage arrived near the ship and both wizard and captain got out first, leaving the guest to extract himself from the little door, as they were both boarding the ship. Machrel whistled loudly and announced the captain on deck, something that earned her a annoyed look from the half-elf, that hated when she did that.

Just then, the creaking of the gangplank announce to all the arrival of the captain newest friend….

The White Swan

The next few moments of the guest extracting itself from the small door of the carriage could best be described as an entertaining spectacle at the very least. The first thing to poke out of the door was a round reptilian-esque head with some small spikes along the crown. The face that accompanied said head was nothing but smiles as the neck extended to look at the ship. "My what a vessel, captain. What a vessel." The head said to the half-elf already boarding the ship.

There seemed to be a problem though. The head and neck extended and retracted and extended again as if trying to pull bodily the whole of his self through the door that was obviously not built with creatures like him in mind. The head disappeared and an arm and a leg and the length of one side of a massive turtle's shell came out next. Well came partly out. The shell wedged in the door and a small sigh could be heard from inside the carriage.
"Wesley a little help?" A squeak and suddenly a tiny bluish critter, something akin to a salamander, squeezed past the shell. Wesley, the familiar, opened his little mouth as wide as he could and chomped down on a tortle 'toe'. "Youch!" The tortle toppled back into the carriage and with a crash the door on the opposite side swung open. A creaking moan bemoaned the stress put on the frame of the door as the whole of a shell, sans the expected head and limbs apparently, forcibly fell through it.

Soft side up, the shell rocked to a stopped and the little familiar ran over to it and disappeared inside one of the gaps where a limb might retract. Slowly the legs, arms and head came out again along with Wesley. A new problem presented itself. Getting right side up. Still the face on this tortle never stopped smiling and with a forward and backward and forward and backward extension of the neck he slowly began rocking until suddenly up he popped. Back on his feet, the odd fellow looked around with his head swiveling even while his body moved back toward the carriage. His arms retrieved his belongings, a fairly weighty bag, a staff, and a book. And with that he started moving toward the ship as well.
"Ahoy folks! Might I come aboard captain? Oh, to the rest of y'all. I'm Sunny!" The smiling face called to any who would listen.

Who's this? Is he client or crew? Either way I doubt he will find it comfortable aboard ship. But if Styx can adapt to low ceilings and narrow passages I am sure this fellow can as well.

Meanwhile Esa has perched herself on his shell and is trying to see passed his limbs to find the small lizard. "The Large Shell keeps getting in the way!" She complains while ineffectively digging at the Tortle's arm.

Good evening Captain.  Moonbea....I mean Styx, reporting for duty!  Styx said smiling and winking over at Wind.

Captain, I know it sounds like we got in a bit of trouble, but honest, it wasn't our fault. I mean, we did go to the Spitting Mermaid when we were told not to, but you should know that when you tell idiots like us not to do something, that's basically what we were going to do.  Plus, it really sounded like a lot of fun and it has been a long time since we've had any of that.  Not to say that being on your ship isn't any fun, because it is, but you know what I'm saying.  I feel like I'm rambling?  Am I rambling.

Anyways, as you can see, we have a couple of new faces here.  These two, Torinn and Asuni, greatly helped us in our kerfuffle with the brain creature and because of their help, they are now on the run, much like we are right now.  Speaking of which, we should probably get going.  We uh...well, the royal guard is looking for us and in order for us to escape them, we did give them a bit of trouble.

Oh, and a pleasure to meet you Sunny.  I'm Styx.  What brings you aboard our vessel this fine night?

Captain, should I escort the 3 new members of our crew to some of the empty cabins down below?

Seeing the large creature trying to get out of the carriage was intriguing at first. I might have a new person to spar with; however, once he had fully righted himself from his awkward emergence, I saw he was not my sort of playmate and lost most of my interest.

Hi, Sonny. My name is Kalista, but you can call me Kali. I said, but mostly to not be rude.

There is much going on, I can see Asuni’s confused look, I probably share it. There was so much commotion I was sure it was the captain but it was a large turtle-person. I’m not sure his race but he seems formal and nice. I hope to finally meet the captain soon and secure positions on the ship for both Asuni and I. I convinced her to leave her life and follow me, I’m responsible for her. Kali seems to be less then enthusiastic to meet him, I guess she’s looking for someone to practice with. At least I have someone to keep my skills sharp with. Styx seems to be quickly talking his way to allow us on the ship. I share his concern and need of speed. I should at least introduce ourselves to this new person who has arrived.

Well met Sunny. This is Asuni, a brilliant cleric in training, and I am Torinn-ra Orinth-a Barath-ra Erath-thu Selune-tha, but you can call me Torinn, as most do. I am a Paladin of Holy Selune. It is nice to meet you.

I look to Styx and Kali, I lean in and drop my voice.

Who is the captain? I would like to speak to him as we are on his ship and I want to secure Asuni and my placement here..

Taking hold of Torinn’s forearm, I lead him over to the captain, This man here is the captain, Torinn. I will leave you to your talk unless either of you need me for anything.

I tried to hide my face just slightly from the Captain’s view. I had a feeling I would be getting an earful later from either him or the First Mate and I would prefer to get chastised without an audience.
