Zodanga

The first view of a Martian city is intimidating for Demetrius.  The architecture style is different from any Earthly culture he is familiar with and many of the buildings rise much higher than he would believe possible; perhaps the lesser gravity of Mars allows such structures which would not be feasible on Earth.  Add to this the flow of pedestrians on the ground and the frequent flyers overhead and it is truly a wonder to behold.

Ducet Cog takes the thoats and locates a stable where they may remain while the rest of you wait in a small plaza.  Nantas notices some dark looks but none of the passersby pay Demetrius or Aeryn any mind.  Upon the white martian's return Ducet Cog asks, "Is there a plan for how we are to find who you search for?"

Aeryn frowns and looks to you both, ready to listen to any suggestions.

"A wise choice," Ducet Cog nodded to his lord, "Zodanga is much as other Red Martian cities but the slave gangs are openly accepted here," he motions as a group leads a line of slaves past; most are red martians but a small few other races are present, "and the smugglers and worse are...well ignored I suppose unless they cause too much of a disturbance."

"At least that was my experience ords ago and from the looks of things little has changed.  Oh the bribes I had to spend just to sell here; it simply wasn't worth the expense,"
he grimaces at the group of captives bound for servitude.

Demetrius scratches his chin. "Folks, I'm a little out of my depth, here. My best bet is for us to play the part of mercenary and earn some coin so that we can move about a bit more freely. I'm open to any suggestions on where to go to do that. Worst comes to worst, I could talk to some folks on the street, but I'm a little worried I'll have to bribe anyone I talk to, based on what you're saying, Ducet."

Ducet Cog nods as Demetrius speaks, "Yes posing as mercenaries is still an excellent ruse but I think we should focus on speaking with slavers to locate your woman.  We do not know her name but do any of you remember her well enough to describe her features?  Slavers often have tattoos or other markings which indicate the gang they are a member of; do you recall any on her?"

The White Martian's questions spark your memories of the woman who stood outside your cell; who you suspect took Patterson with her in the ship you saw depart the Warhoon city.  For a moment it is as if you sit chained once more, you can almost smell the stench of the place and feel the aches of the wounds you have received in combat in the area.  Distantly the cried of the Warhoon fill your ears.  You recall looking at the red woman through the bars...

What do you recall about her?

Make a D1 test using Reason + (Passion OR Empathy) to remember details about the strange woman.  For every Momentum gained you may spend to recall and extra detail

Both Earthman and Green Man recall the general features of the woman and believe they would recognize her again if they saw her.  But Nantas recalls a particular marking upon her left forearm and is able to sketch it in the dust of the plaza.

Upon seeing the sketch Ductet Cog's eyes widen and he bends down to make a small adjustment, "If this is the mark she bore then she is a member of one of the largest and most powerful slave rings in all of Zodanga."  He rubs his chin in thought before nodding and adding, "If this woman took your friend in chains and brought him to Zodanga then she did not hire the slavers who transported us all by wagon.  She was, in fact, part of their same organization.  She must be someone of prominence in the group, to take select slaves by flyer while the bulk were transported by lesser members by wagon."

He refers, of course, a slave market; apparently in Zodanga there are several.

The Earthman's inquiries are not the most subtle or elegant but they do prove fruitful. In short order you are directed to a section of the city and within that section a specific restaurant.  There, you are told, is a man named Carth Val-ab and the establishment is his "court".  If you can gain admittance from his "crew" and speak with him he can most likely tell you who this woman who bears the mark of their syndicate is.

It takes you over a zode to locate the place, nearly midday now and the smells from the kitchen within are enticing.  Within you quickly recognize that there is a large back room and the pair of men standing near its doorway bear the same markings as the woman you seek.  These are clearly members of Carth Val-ab's crew and presumably he must be beyond.

Your quest has lead you here, now how will you proceed to gain audience with the one who might guide you further?

The pair at the door glare with malice as you approach, neither flinch when Jasoomians are mentioned.   Yet they exchange a glance, frown, and then the larger holds up his palm, "Wait here."

While the second brute remains, the first disappears within the back room and returns shortly, "It appears that we have no access to Jasoomian's at this time but Carth Val-ab would be pleased to speak with you further on the matter and see if other options might suffice."

He motions for you to make your way into the back room.

Assuming you do so you find a man of Zodanga seated at a desk at the far wall; a sumptuous meal sits at the edge of the clutter before him barely touched.  He rises and nods and greets you, "Welcome to you all, I am Carth Val-ab.  I must admit I was surprised to hear of your interest in Jasoomian's; everyone knows that so few have appeared on Barsoom that it is unheard of for any to be taken as slaves.  But I wondered if your interest might lie in something deeper, perhaps.  After all," he looks to Demetrius, "one of you is a Jasoomian, are you not?  For who else than one from that distant world could have performed such amazing leaps when he and his companion bested the greedy watch at the gates of our fair city so handedly?"  He inclines his head to Nantas'; acknowledging the Green Man's skill with his blade in addition to the Earthman.

"You may surmise that I traffic in information as much as slaves.  It is an important commodity for one at my level in my organization.  The information flowed to me earlier this morning of amazing feats of swordsmanship and nearly unbelievable strength at the city gate.  I pay many to be informed of interesting events and sometimes, when four individuals who match the description of those involved appear in my doorway, my investment is well rewarded." he returns his gaze to you and smiles.

"But like slaves, various information is of varying value.  It requires only few tanip a day to be kept abreast of the public happenings in the city.  But the secret meetings?  Those require dozens.  To know of our great Jeddak's council discussions shortly after they have adjourned, ten times that or more."

"So, understand that I cannot name a price without first having some inkling of the information you seek.  Neither in coin nor goods or other services.  Tell me what it is you seek, and we will see if we can agree upon a price."

The slaver begins to laugh but immediately recognizes the sincerity of your words and halts, a perplexed look upon his face....then introspective....then....   The look that comes to Carth Val-ab could best be described as somewhere between predatory and evaluative.   It is not intrinsically hostile but more opportunistic.  You have the feeling you are being weighed, measured of your qualities and you value assessed.

In the end the man leans back in his chair, at ease as he answers, "I would like to say that your information is false and yet, I wonder if you are perhaps in possession of information which I lack.  Tell me, why are you so certain that my organization would be in possession of a Jasoomian and have you any idea who might have done so?"

"I know the woman you seek,"
he continues, "Indeed she and I share a similar position within our organization.  Once we were partners in our rise but that becomes...challenging....to maintain as one struggles to progress in stature and alliances shift."

He frowns a moment before adding, "I spoke earlier of the worth of this information; I believe we can come to an agreement in this matter.  I wish to know what actions my colleague is engaged in an who with, for I am certain it is not widely known.  In exchange for this I will provide her name and the location of her quarters within the city.  You may then engage her as you see fit to learn the particulars of her dealings and location of this Jasoomian.  I ask only that you report back to me on your findings."

Demetrius - everything about Carth Val-ab appears genuine

"Though Zodanga is known for slavery the capture of said slaves predominantly occurs outside of the city proper.  It's generally bad for business to regularly shackle any who enter the gates.  The only exception to this is those who are arrested for serious crimes.  Regardless, it would not serve my needs for any to interfere with your activities.  If you keep your actions quiet no authorities should become involved."

You have little trouble locating the section of the city where Isalia is said to reside; not grade but well-to-do.   You pass all manner of Barsoomains on the way though the vast majority are certainly the red men (and women) of Zodanga.  Examining the area Aeryn suggests locations where each might stand watch, either singly or in pairs.  Thus you situate yourselves and.....wait.

After 2 zodes (nearly 5 hours) you begin to wonder if Carth Val-ab has played you false before you see two Zodangan's approach the apartment and knock.  There is no mistaking the woman who opens the door, you recall her vividly from the Warhoon pens.   There stands Isalia Ang, the captor of your friend Patterson Boon.  She closes the door while the pair of red martians remain outside, not standing guard but seemingly expecting her return shortly.

Feel free to describe how you have situated yourselves to observe Isalia's residence.

I'll pause should anyone wish to take any actions now or continue to observe

Nantas is standing under an arc, that creates a dark zone where he feels less visible. Nantas looks at the Green Martians passing (if any of them passes at all) and checks out their tribes and clans by looking at their metal.
He's not particularly interested on the Jasoomian woman, but he will help his companions freeing her out of camaraderie and loyalty.

Demetrius has been taking the least complicated path to surveillance--simple stake-out. He identifies an alley within eyeshot of Isalia's place and peers out periodically and stealthily.

Ducet Cog and Aeryn have a different task. He tells them to each make a circuit around the neighborhood at a leisurely pace, a quarter of a zode each circuit and staggered so the pair don't appear together. They walk past the place, looking to see who comes or goes.

When these two appear, Demetrius continues to wait; Aeryn's instructions, in this situation, is to follow any who do business with Isalia back to a place where they seem to be from and then report back to Demetrius.

You have not long to wait before the door to Isalia's residence opens once more and the slaver strides out with barely a glace at the pair waiting.  They, in turn fall in behind her in a protective swagger, heads watching those they pass with hands near hilts should any threat materialize.  After a short distance a third slaver leading a pair of White Apes in chains merges into the group.  Other pedestrians seem to sense the silent threat and instinctively separate from their path; apparently an all too familiar part of Zodangan society.

As you have planned you each fall in at a distance behind.  Nantas' height is an advantage here to help keep track of your quarry but it also makes him easier to spot and forces him to stay farther back.    Aeryn and Ducet Cog break off and parallel at one point, keeping pace and checking in at each side street; leaving the majority of the shadowing to Demetrius and Nantas.

Let's see how well you are able to follow Isalia and her entourage without being noticed.  As movement is important here along with a certain amount tactics make a Daring + Cunning check vs Isalia's Empathy + Reason.  One of you may make the roll and the other assist.

There is a moment when your quarry and her entourage pause at an intersection, she turns slowly looking one direction, then another, eyes searching.

Demetrius per p52 under Teamwork and Assistance - Assistants may not use any means to roll additional dice, though the leader may use Momentum, Threat, Luck, or other methods of gaining extra d20s.

So you cannot add any extra dice by any means BUT Nantas may decide to do so if he so chooses using Momentum, Threat, Luck or Talent.

16:49, Today: Jeddak rolled 11 using 2d20 with rolls of 1,10.  Isalia detect being followed, Empathy + Reason, 13/6-.
- Isalia has 3 successes negating Nantas'

What will you do, Nantas?  You may:
- accept the results as is
- spend any Momentum or add Threat to my pool to roll up to 3 more die and roll
- spend a point of Luck to add 2 successes to your current total
- not sure you have a Talent that would apply

Is this the location of the slaves Isalia Ang keeps for some unknown purpose?

Is your comrade Patterson Boon held within?

Aeryn and Ducet Cog are able to join you to discuss how you might discover the answers.

How will you proceed?

You spread yourselves out and take up watch on the warehouse and its surroundings.  In short order you are certain that Isalia and those with her have indeed entered the warehouse.  While you watch they do not exit.

Additionally you become aware of others upon the street and at least one pair that pass twice while you linger.  The marks on their arms are now familiar to you and you recognize members of Isalia and Carth Val-ab's slave gang.  These must be loyal to Isalia and keeping watch upon the warehouse for her.

There can be little doubt that this is Isalia's secret repository; what then will you do?  Enter by either forcing your way past the guard?  Or by sneaking in unseen?  Have you another option?

Declare your actions.  Patterson Boon's life may rest upon your next decision.

Aeryn considers Demetrius' request, finally sighing, "We shall count 10 xats and do what we may to cause eyes to look away from the warehouse.  But have a care, you know there are at least 2 white apes within and they are not the half-starved and wounded creatures that we faced in the wild."

As the bravos in the street decide to threaten another passing group, the Jasoomian and Green Man make their move.  Aeryn and Ducet Cog hold their collective breath, praying the gang members do not glance towards the pair scrambling or leaping to the 2nd story balcony.  As Demetrius and Nantas disappear within and close the door JUST as the guards complete their harassment and return to their duty, the red and white Martians both sigh in unison.

Inside the warehouse Demetrius and Nantas can hear the distant murmur of voices amid stacks of crates and containers of a multitude of sizes.  A cursory glance from Nantas indicates they are various trade goods.   Whatever this ancient building's original purpose it appears to have become a storehouse of merchandise that Isalia's group traffics in.

There is no sound of alarm.  No sign any are aware of your intrusion.  The room's doorway opens into a corridor that looks to run the length of this side of the warehouse, much the same as the balcony does on the outside.  You can see doors occasionally on both sides of the hallway and, fortunately, no one is in sight, before the corridor turns at each end.

Unfortunately there is also no sign of Isalia or Patterson Boon, you'll clearly need to venture deeper, perhaps check the other floors.

How will you proceed?

You move right, towards the closer set of voices Demetrius picked out.  The hallway remains cluttered as you pass a few rooms that also appear to store more goods for Isalia's gang though at least two are thick with dust; whatever is stored within the crates and boxes has not been touched in years.

A short distance further and you begin to catch sight of a large, open room ahead which likely rises from ground to roof.  There seems to be a bright illumination in the room itself but the balconies around remains poorly lit, yet you think you can make out movement in spots, likely other slavers going about their tasks.  However, nearer the source of the voices comes from a side room where a trio of red men work before a strange, complex machine.  The voices coming from the apparatus and the operator's responses back lead Demetrius to believe it is some form of radio or whatever the equivalent that Barsoomian's may use for long distance communication.  Nantas has never seen it's like before.

As of yet you remain unnoticed.  Once again you must decide your next action.

Retreating back the way you came you instead follow the hallway to the left.  It follows a similar path as the first corridor but on the opposite side of the building.   You pass no side room with strange equipment and operators this time and are able to reach the large, open, multi-story room in the center of the building.

Indeed you can see that this room is open to all 3 of the building's levels but it is the ground floor which draws your immediate attention.  There concentric circles of bunks are arranged around a strange central device. Upon most of these, in quiet repose, is a sentient being. In addition to various red Martians are the occasional Okar and green Martian but some occupants are obscured from your view. Those you can see appear to have wires attached to their head.  These wires spread like ganglia across the floor and junction at a crystal as tall as a man which is contained in a strange device plated in chrome.

Near this array are rows of rectangular tarps, from the shape of the lumps underneath and an occasional visible limb you have no doubt they cover bodies.

Four of Isalia's crew appear to be attending to the odd device or the bunks' occupants.  From this vantage Patterson is not visible but you are uncertain if a blanket or tarp might cover him.

If your friend yet lives he must surely be here somewhere.  How will you proceed?

Nantas is planning to make a big fracas and then everything will become more livelier and hopefully easier, after they will be released from the mental control.... a bit like the caravan and the released slaves in the desert few days ago...

Nantas practically demonstrates his plan to his Jasoomian companion: he goes back and chooses a box hard and heavy enough, then he aims at the big crystal (that in his view is keeping all the prisoners as mental thralls) and throws the box, hoping to destroy the device with one, swift hit and cause a massive mayhem. In the mayhem, he's sure he'll be able to find a way to achieve whatever he's hoping to achieve due to the surprise and chaos factors.

Battle of the Warehouse

As Demetrius watches his Green Man companion uses his immense strength to heave a heavy crate through the air towards the strange crystal.  Nantas' aim is true and the crate and its contents shatter against the chrome housing.   Surprisingly housing and crystal do not shatter but the impact manages to topping the contraption back upon ope of Isalia's crew tending to the captives.

As the device falls the wires upon the opposite side become taunt, some snap, some pop free from the victims they are attached to, and some are strong enough that those at the end are actually pulled from their beds.   In the moment of shock before the chaos ensues, both of you recognize one of the pale, now bearded figures that is jerked from beneath the blanket covering him.   There only a short distance away lies Patterson Boon, the man you have crossed karads of Martian dead sea bottom to find!

An alarm begins to blare.

Shouting erupts.

And upon the far side of the large room you see Isalia herself rush forward and lock dark, angry eyes upon you both!

You have managed to incapacitate 1 of the guards here and discover Patterson Boon.

Round 1 begins!

Oh look, I have 7 Threat saved up, I think it's time to start using some of that.
- 1 Threat spent to Seize Initiative, Isalia will act before anyone else...

The Red Woman puts some small object to her lips and seems to blow as she draws a pistol from her belt.

14:45, Today: Jeddak rolled 11 using 2d20 with rolls of 10,1.  Isalia - GANG CAPTAIN, Daring + Empathy, 13/6-.
- success with 2 Momentum

I'll spend an extra point of Threat to give her 3 Momentum total

You've kicked the ant pile.

You are 1 zone up from the floor and 1 zone away from where Patterson lays and the 3 guards.

You are 2 zones away from Isalia.

Declare your actions!

Demetrius begins to move into the chaos. However, his strong movements, particularly a leap down to the next level, give away his presence...

And the dice completely betray me. Blew both Momentums for a matching set of 16s that leave me with one success, AKA a fail.

13:33, Today: Demetrius Esper rolled 16 using 1d20 with rolls of 16.  One more Momentum.

Nantas picks up another box and throws it upon the gang captain. Rather than hurting the captain (which wouldn't be bad) he wants to prevent any kind of order from being established. Mayhem has to continue!

[OOC: 19:26, Today: Nantas rolled 17 using 2d20 with rolls of 1,16.  Cunning 9 + Daring 9
is it enough to match the challenge or do I need to spend some more Momentum?]

Since you're not going for Stealth this seems more like a Ranged Attack, which is normally Cunning + Reason unless you can justify how movement is a key component here.  Regardless you are 3 zones away from Isalia (1 down and 2 over) increasing the difficulty of your attack by +3 (now takes 4 successes for a hit).  Because of that your attack will miss.

This time....

In reply to Nantas (msg # 90):

[OOC: I used Cunning and Daring exactly like I did for hitting the crystal before and ultimately I was trying to have the same outcome (making a mess) rather than guessing the movements of the target and anticipate them with my reason in order to hit. This time I want to create confusion and attract attention on me, hoping my companion will get less attention.
It's OK if I miss, as long as I cause distraction and mayhem.]

Battle of the Warehouse

Nantas heaves another crate high in the direction of Isalia but the slaver is simply too far, even for the giant Green Man's muscles.  It shatters among the circle of cots but drawing all eyes towards him.  Red Men shout and point, there is movement around as slavers file out out into the main chamber or on to the balconies that encircle it on the levels above.  Indeed it appears that Nantas has done his job well.   Several on the floor above draw pistols as they run closer before opening fire!  As the radium round explode around him more slaves converge upon Nantas with blades drawn!

Into this chaos Demetrius attempts to blend, disguised as he is as another of the Red Men of Barsoom.   And indeed he seems to succeed, reaching the floor of the great room unobserved, but perhaps it is his concern for his fellow Earthman and the relative newness to the Red Planet's lighter gravity which causes him to forget himself only for a moment...causing his Earthborn muscles to send him higher than any native surely could and bringing him in a single leap beside Patterson Boon.

"You!" Isalia's cry of recognition and surprised shouts from others around him leave no doubt that the ruse is up.  There is no time to grab Patterson, who's unfocused eyes barely seem to blink.  No time to do aught but attempt to avoid the oncoming blades and survive!

Battle of the Warehouse

Demetrius' eyes go wide at the sudden turn of events. "Ah, hell," he mutters as the first man comes toward him. His mind slows everything down as he quickly steps backward, anticipating the man's forward momentum. It he leans back away from the man's slashing blade, which flashes a mere inch from his face as he steps back.

Demetrius flips backward and is able to plant his feet in a more stable stance when two others come at him. He ducks below the first man's swings as he calculates the man's speed of reaction; assuming that his fellow has similar capability, he whirls, drawing his blade, and not only knocks aside the man's blow but slashes at the man's midsection. He then kicks the fellow, sending him flying....

Defense #1 vs. 2 Successes: I have to give you a point of Threat to generate Momentum, but that Momentum gives me 2 successes. Whew. Gain +1d20 on my next attack on that foe from Thinks Fast on His Feet.

Defense #2 vs. 1 Success: 3 successes, so bank 2 Momentum. Gain +1d20 on my next attack on that foe from Thinks Fast on His Feet.

Defense #3 vs. 1 Success: 4 successes, so 3 Momentum to work with. Gain +1d20 on my next attack on that foe from Thinks Fast on His Feet. Immediately spend those 3 Momentum for a Counter-Strike.

Counter-strike nets 5 successes! Waiting for the minion's Defense roll before narrating the rest of that.

Re: Battle of the Warehouse

Recap since we've been stalled for a while
The diversion has proven only partially successful and now both Nantas and Demetrius are engaged.   The Green Man fights on the 2nd level against 3 minions (2 others have been disarmed) and 5 more on the 3rd level above are intent upon brining him down with radium rounds from their pistols.  Meanwhile Isalia has summoned one of her fearsome White Ape which the pair had seen with her when they tailed the gang leader to this secret hideout; it has dropped from the roof access above and seems prepared to unleash its wrath upon Demetrius.

Nantas - your attack on the disarmed minion happens now, roll your 2d6 for your blade to confirm you score 1 damage and knock out one of the minions.  If you have any extra Momentum in your personal pool you can spend to automatically knock out the 2nd minion

Demetrius - take your turn now before the White Ape or Isalia goes

1st floor close (Demetrius, White Ape, Patterson Boon)
1st floor hallways
2nd floor balcony (Nantas, minions with swords)

Attack the ape, gains 2 successes and another blankety-blank Complication. A good complication for this one would be getting caught on something sticking out on the way up, which would mean he's unable to move for now and would require a Cunning+Might check to break free on his next turn.

Waiting for the ape to defend.

The remaining swordsmen take up a staggered attack, each leaping forward to strike, parry then retreat.  They seem to hope this will keep Nantas of guard but it also seems intent to give the pistols above more opportunity to fire without fear of striking them instead of the green man.  Indeed Nantas finds it difficult to follow; the radium rounds exploding nearby do not help.

16:26, Today: Jeddak rolled 17 using 3d20 with rolls of 13,2,2.  Sword Minions, melee, 10/5-.
- 2 minions have 2 successes, Nantas defend twice with Daring + Passion and count your successes to see if you negate the attacks or not

16:31, Today: Jeddak rolled 36 using 5d20 with rolls of 2,9,1,9,15.  Pistol Minions, 9/4- (D2 from adjacent zone)
- and 2 pistol minions have 1 success, Nantas defend twice with Daring + Empathy

If you have a Talent that lets you use alternate state for Defense feel free to substitute

While Nantas faces a group of foes, Demetrius' deals with a single enormous one.  His blade scratches the beast but it does not appear to notice, turning to follow the Jasoomian as his Earthly muscles bound him past the creature.  But the area is not clutter with thrown beds, bodies of those attached to the strange device, wire and other debris, so it is no surprise that Demetrius foot is fowled in the landing and his off-balance and the Ape attacks.

22:51, Today: Nantas rolled 15 using 2d20 with rolls of 14,1.  Daring 9; Empathy 3. - 2 successes

What happens with my Momentum in this case?]

1 blade blocked but the 2nd strikes.

1 radium round hurts but the other is avoided and you have 1 more Momentum available to either use immediately or add to your personal pool

17:49, Today: Jeddak rolled 7 using 2d6 with rolls of 6,1.  Pistol Minion Dmg.
- 2 Injury Stress + 1 Fear Stress

17:48, Today: Jeddak rolled 7 using 2d6 with rolls of 5,2.  Sword Minions Dmg
- 3 Injury Stress + 1 Injury Stress - lucky hit, 1 more point and you would have automatically taken an Affliction

The Green Man is harried from all sides as he battles atop the 2nd level balcony.  The graze of a radium round is barely felt but it is enough of a momentary distraction that allows an opponent's blade to leave a wide gash.

Let's look at Nantas' Stress Tracks:
Injury (Cunning+Might)    : 15 (9 total currently)
Fear (Daring+Passion)     : 13 (2 total currently)
Confusion (Empathy+Reason):  7

When you fill up one of these stress tracks you'll gain 1 Affliction that will make any tests with those related Attributes 1D harder.

There are some Momentum & Luck spends that can help deal with Stress (among other things), they're listed on the References thread

Nantas now has 3 Momentum

Re: Battle of the Warehouse

Demetrius, stuck in a tough spot, watches the enormous hands of the beast coming at him. He twists cleverly, just barely dodging what would be certain to be a dangerous, painful grip!!!

Rolled only 1 Success, when 3 is needed (2 base for having my foot stuck + 1 extra success from ape). Spend Luck to get another die with a roll of 1 to meet my 3 successes.

I gain a d20 on my next action against the ape thanks to Thinks Fast on His Feet.

12:58, Today: Demetrius Esper rolled 12,17 using 1d20,1d20 with rolls of 12,17.  Defense: Daring + Reason, 14/7.

Both Jasoomian and Barsoomian find themselves in a precarious dance of death with their different foes.  One misstep may spell disaster but so too will a slow spiral of injuries.   But there is no sign of falter with either the slavers focused upon Nantas nor the monstrous White Ape hounding Demetrius.

Demetrius swings back and forth, swinging his blade, until his foot fell loose. He also kicked as he fell, kicking at any spots he may have cut with his blade!!

Atack! Three successes.

15:32, Yesterday: Demetrius Esper rolled 17,2,7 using 1d20,1d20,1d20 with rolls of 17,2,7.  Attack the ape! 13/6.

08:21, Today: Jeddak rolled 20 using 2d20 with rolls of 8,12.  White Ape defend vs Demetrius, 11/4-.
- only 1 success, you generate 1 Momentum

Damage: 4 from the sword (2 from 2, 1+1 from Sharp effect on sword) and additional 1 damage from unarmed hit. Total of 5 Stress.

21:46, Today: Demetrius Esper rolled 5,2,1,4 using 1d6,1d6,1d6,1d6 with rolls of 5,2,1,4.  Damage on ape!!

Nice, 5 Stress == 1 Wound on the Ape, all it's tests will now be at +1 Difficulty

Post a description of the wound you inflict which will hamper the creature going forward!

Yes, 3 injury to your target, eliminating him.  For 2 more Momentum you'll eliminate the remaining swordsmen leaving only the 5 with pistols on the level above you

Nantas' twin blades dance in the air, while all his opponents at melee range fall. As he looks at the swordsmen that opposed him, Nantas maintains a respectful approach: these individuals were enemies due to their birth and their personal histories, but there was no personal resentment for them... Nantas was just a better, or luckier, swordsman on this occasion, and they fell. May they find rest.
Nantas instead looks in rage and disdain to the marksmen attacking dishonourably with ranged weapon an enemy that is wielding just melee weapons. May they rot eternally!

Re: Battle of the Warehouse

As the remaining swordsmen collapse at the feet of the savage Green Man, their brethren above cry out and fire another volley of shots but only a single round comes close to Nantas.

20:10, Today: Jeddak rolled 66 using 5d20 with rolls of 17,4,10,20,15.  Pistol Minions, 9/4- (D2 from adjacent zone).
- 1 success and a Complication

Nantas defend vs Ranged Attack (Daring + Empathy)

Hmmm for Complication...eh they're minions so

The group above recognizes that the distance is simply too great for their small firearms; with a shout the leader directs them towards a hallway....but one appears to break off from the rest.  Were one closer they might see the terror in eyes which had witnessed the destruction wrought by the duelist's blades.   He vanishes down a different corridor unnoticed by his companions and is not seen again.

Isalia screams as her lackey's fall and raises something to her lips once more.   Her blade is then freed from its scabbard and it is clear the captain is prepared to join in the battle.
20:27, Today: Jeddak rolled 20 using 2d20 with rolls of 10,10.  Isalia - GANG CAPTAIN, Daring + Empathy, 13/6-.
- 2 successes, 1 Threat generated
- I'll spend 3 Threat on.....something

Meanwhile the White Ape appears to ignore its wound and lunges towards Demetrius with all its mighty bulk....but a stabbing pain from its torn limb causes it's leg to collapse and the creature is throw off to the side and prone!
20:30, Today: Jeddak rolled 39 using 2d20 with rolls of 19,20.  17/7- Fearsome attack, D2.
- 0 successes and a Complication....&*$#@!

The beast is now prone and at +1D to defend until its next turn (in addition to the Wound it already has)

Demetrius you may choose to defend against a 0D attack and gain Momentum if you wish OR avoid any chance of rolling a Complication and end the turn instead.

Can I spend 2 Momentum right away for a free attack?

22:26, Today: Demetrius Esper rolled 4,1 using 1d20,1d20 with rolls of 4,1.  Daring + Might to defend vs. D0.

Aren't both those under your lowest Stat?  Isn't that 4 successes/Momentum?

Yes you can pay 3 Momentum for Counterstrike (or less if you have a Talent that reduces the cost like Nantas does)

Quite right! Spend my 3 Momentum for Counterstrike. Adding my bonus d20 for Thinks Fast on His Feet, that's 4 successes attacking the ape! Sadly, only 2 damage from the initial roll (1 die +1 from effect), so will likely spend Momentum on damage if I get any.

16:49, Today: Demetrius Esper rolled 4,4,3,6 using 1d6,1d6,1d6,1d6 with rolls of 4,4,3,6.  Damage.
16:48, Today: Demetrius Esper rolled 16,1,5 using 1d20,1d20,1d20 with rolls of 16,1,5.  Attack w/bonus d20 for Thinks Fast on His Feet.

00:53, Today: Jeddak rolled 22 using 2d20 with rolls of 18,4.  White Ape defend vs Demetrius, 11/4-.
- 0 successes on a D3 defends vs Demetrius' attack, you've 4 Momentum to either spend or add to your pool....though your lowest stat's a 3 so you'll lose 1 Momentum as you can only keep a max of 3

Declare your choice!

Re: Battle of the Warehouse

The Ape's clumsy attack is doubly tragic for the brutal beast as it leaves it wide open for Demetrius' blades backstroke.  Another roar of pain reverberates throughout the building and is surely heard outside as well.  Leaping back Demetrius can see a horrid gash across the cheek and eye of the White Ape which will surely affect its ability to fight.....

but to assume it is already defeated could be a tragic mistake.

White Ape takes another Affliction for taking 5 or more Stress in a single attack, all actions are now +2D

But this time there is an answering cry from above.  As you both look up your hearts pause a beat in recognition of the second of the Apes you had trailed here accompanying Isalia.  Through the broken skylight where the first entered, so now comes it's mate.   Though it surely sees Nantas it appears intent upon its companion and the one who threatens it!

The call of the second Ape elicits a response from the 1st as it rises and beats its own chest in a display of might.

I'm going to spend 3 Thread to remove 1 Affliction from the 1st Ape.  Let's say it still has the gash along its face but the previous wound to its leg will no longer hamper it.

Next Round!
Just as the battle seemed poised to swing in your favor now all is thrown in question!   A 2nd mighty White Ape appears intent to descend to crush Demetrius if its wounded mate does not do so first!  Meanwhile Isalia, slave captain and captor of your friend Patterson Boon is poised to attack Demetrius when an opening presents itself should her savage Apes not dispose of the upstart Jasoomian immediately.  Though Nantas is free of threat for the moment it remains to be seen where the group of pistol wielding slavers have disappeared to.  Will they appear soon and resume their attack upon the Green Man with blade or pistol?

Demetrius, can you withstand the assault that gathers?

Nantas, what will you do to assist your companion?

Declare your actions!

Note the 1st Ape has still taken 11 Stress and is close to filling its Stress track

Re: Battle of the Warehouse

Demetrius had studied the apes of his world, specifically the gorilla. He had always been fascinated about how vulnerable the great apes really were when they beat their breast, as they raised their heads up and exposed their neck.

Demetrius' legs tensed like coiled steel and then Demetrius tumbled up, slashing at the ape's exposed neck. He fell backward gracefully...

Attack! Spend 2 Momentum for 6 successes! Woot :-) Total of 7 damage before Momentum. If a (likely) Harm from a full Stress track and one more Harm from 5 damage don't kill it, I'll use Momentum for more damage. Otherwise, need to see how many Momentum I have to play with.

hmmmm, any thoughts on how the quality or scope could be increased?  These are rather arbitrary so open to suggestions.

Scope is tough, not anyone else here but the Ape at the moment.  How would the action you describe impact it?

Quality...honestly with an attack like this paying for extra die to roll for damage would be a better indicator of quality of success.

Currently your roll of 4 is 0 Stress damage.

Re: Battle of the Warehouse

[OOC: my hope is that my threat will have the best possible success (i.e. she surrenders, as she has been disarmed) and that her (dishonourable) minions that used to shoot at me will surrender as well]

Okay then you need the extra damage dice to roll and try to give her a Fear affliction.  It's basically just like when you roll for an Injury (from sword or pistol) but instead of applying to her Wounds stress track it will apply to her Trauma stress track.  As a Villain she has separate tracks for Stress just like you do.

You wouldn't roll damage for a sword and then try to increase quality of success for greater damage, you'd just spend it on more damage dice to roll.  Same thing here.

If you do want to increase scope of success I'll let you affect 1 extra target for each Momentum spent and, since the Minions from above will arrive this round, I'll let you apply any Fear Stress to one of them as they appear (assuming you roll some Stress, so far your attack has not done any).  So you'll still need to roll at least 1 or more Combat Die and hope for anything other than a 3 or 4.

[OOC: here is the extra roll: 21:32, Today: Nantas rolled 5 using 1d6 with rolls of 5.  extra damage.]

Re: Battle of the Warehouse

Isalia
Nantas knows he holds the advantageous position, his blade is in had(s) and the slave captian's lies on the floor.  There is still the pistol at her side but his threat upon her should make her wary to reach for it.  And she does not but....instead lifts her hand to her scantly clad chest in an display of weakness.

"And would you strike me down, unarmed as I am?  Are you so savage that only blood delights you?"

Again her beauty strikes Nantas and for a moment he questions his own actions.

Okay Isalia is going to try a Threaten/Intimidation attack of her own, trying to use her beauty to Confuse Nantas.   But he's a savage Green Man and likely less vulnerable to such tactics from a Red Martian so will make this a D2 test for her.

20:09, Today: Jeddak rolled 16 using 2d20 with rolls of 6,10.  Isalia Insult/Threaten Nantas 10/4-.
- she just succeeds

Nantas attempt to see through her feminine wiles using Daring + Passion or Might.  You need only 1 success

White Ape
The hairy brute is enraged from the wound Demetrius has dealt it and attempts to overrun and crush the Jasoomian beneath its great bulk.

20:13, Today: Jeddak rolled 33 using 2d20 with rolls of 15,18.  White Ape attack Demetrius, 17/7-
- only 1 success

Demetrius defend yourself

Slavers
Into this scene then come those slavers who had fire upon Nantas from above, intending to charge at the Green Man on the second level but now finding him no longer there.  In their confusion they gaze down upon the floor, the brutal struggle between Demetrius and the White Ape so close to where their mistress Isalia stands before the giant Green Man Nantas in apparent weakness.  It is too much for one of their number who cries, "Isalia is taken, it was foolish to follow her."  Before any of his companions can stop him he disappears from the railing, presumably to exit the building and find other employment elsewhere.

As for the rest, they yell, threaten and taunt Nantas but their position is weak and their words do not cause the Green Man any doubt.

3 Slavers remain in this group now.
Between the distance and the poor position they are in, with Isalia nearly unarmed and showing weakness to Nantas, not even going to roll for their Threaten attacks.

Demetrius crouches and springs onto the great ape's back. He manages to slice into the back of its neck with his blade and then kicks the wound to cause the ape pain, but his balance wobbles...

Attack using my bonus d20. Get 4 successes--and a Complication! For the Complication, I propose that Demetrius falls off the ape's back and lands on his back, making him defend at Difficulty 2.

Deals 3 damage (2 rolled + 1 sword effect). If that hits, I'll spend any generated Momentum on damage!

Re: Battle of the Warehouse

The crash of the Ape's body is the only sound as it falls to the Jasoomian's counter-strike.  Then all is quite. Looking round you see no sign of Isalai or her crewmembers, apparently the slaves have fled while you battled the last White Ape.

The sound of running feet from one hallway causes you to spin, prepared to defend yourselves from a slaver attack.  Instead Alya and Ducet Cog appear and quickly explain that Zodanga authorities are even now gathering.  The sounds of combat and the howls of the White Apes echoed over the streets outside.  Soon they will surround the building and cut off any chance of escape.

Unless you mean to battle Zodangan security forces, you must gather Patterson Boon and make haste from the building!

Ape took Stress after it was already at 0 Stress.  Automatic Affliction,  Ape is dead.

What now?  Will you attempt to battle your way through the Zodangan soldiers or sneak away unseen?  Where will you go should you escape?

You find a doorway leading from the building and from it observe that security forces are attempting to encircle the building but as yet they are few in number with only a bare few covering this side.  It may be possible to slip away in the confusion but you will need be quick.

Who will lead the escape and who will assist?

Lead - make a D2 Daring + Reason to move quickly and smartly out of the tightening noose
Assistant - can roll 1d20 also against their Daring + Reason

I'll make an opposed Cunning + Reason roll for the Zodanga security to to see who scores the most Momentum

Re: Battle of the Warehouse

There is still much confusion as the Zodangan authorities attempt to establish a perimeter. Their attention is split between watching the building, directing those nearby to move away, and numerous other distractions.  Into this sea of movement Dimetrius leads the group, timing his advancement just as a group of Isalia's crew begins yelling at two of the officers.  It seems likely they intend a distraction, assuming that many of their people are still inside.  If they notice your movement and are surprised by the sight of a Green Man among you they make no sign.

Soon you are blocks away from the warehouse, lost in the throng of Zogangan populace.  In an alleyway you are finally able to rouse Patterson Boon, he is confused and it takes many minutes before he is able to recall and relate his transport to Zodanga in Isalia's ship and the final moments when he was attached to the strange machine in the warehouse.  After that...nothing.  Not even dreams.  He is surprised to learn how much time has passed and is indeed thinner and weaker than before; whatever nourishment was given to those connected was hardly sufficient to keep them in good health.

The time has come to determine your next course of action.  Carth Val-ab, who directed you to Isalia's residence, expects you to report the specifics of Isalia's operation in exchange for the help he provided.  He claims that his network will be watching you and alert him should you try to leave without returning to him first....but your choices are your own.

What will you do?

The visit to Carth Val-ab is brief as the informed slaver leader is already well aware of the commotion your actions have stirred.  Isalia appears to be on the run and her location is currently unknown, the authorities have confiscated the strange device and are seeing those still alive who were connected to it receive medical care.  Unfortunately several were already dead or in such a state that they will likely never recover.

True to his word, Val-ab offers you no threat but congratulates you on successfully retrieving your comrade.  He does advise you to leave the city as soon as possible for should Isalia or any of her surviving gang be captured they might give your description to the authorities who would surely seek you out for interrogation and possible imprisonment.  With that he considers your arrangement complete and bids you well.

You soon find yourselves on the streets of Zodanga once more with a new sense of freedom and a wealth of possibilities before you.  This chapter of your life on Barsoom has ended; where will you go from here?

Feel free to provide a closing post for your character.  Where do you go?  What does their future hold?
