How the Narrative will work

The Narrative
Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot. - Mark Twain

The narrative, like a character, is run by the fate of the cards.  You will need to determine the place where the characters start when the story begins and then create a narrative spread.  The narrative spread is: draw nine cards and arrange them in a 3x3 grid.  A player will select a row from the spread to fulfill an aspect of the narrative.  The aspects of the narrative are Story, Event, Environment, Conflict, and Clarification.  Once the row has been selected, the path chosen for the narrative, and maybe even record the cards, move the nine cards to a discard pile.

I Introduction: (Story and Event) => Narrative Spread
A. (Environment and Clarification) => Narrative Spread

In the beginnings of an outline above, you will see points such as (Story and Event) and (Environment and Clarification).  Pairs of Narrative aspects are drawn from the same spread.  Story and Event will be determined from a single spread then moved to discard.  Environment and Clarification will be determined from a new spread which is then moved to discard, and so forth.

A   B   C
D   E   F
G   H   I

For each pair, determine the row that fulfills the first aspect of the narrative pair: ABC, DEF, or GHI.  The pair that follow will determine the next aspect.

Story = ABC, then Event = DEF
Story = DEF, then Event = GHI
Story = GHI, then Event = ABC

How the Narrative will work

For now, I'll keep the sections I've written for Story, Event, Environment, Conflict, and Clarification to myself until they are needed for the narrative (Also, it's a lot of copy-pasting I don't want to do right now.)  Instead, I'll just jump to an example of what might come of a spread for (Story and Event) with an example.

Row One
Story Component
Theme: Reversed Four of Engines
The grand idea will have something to do with communication, a deep passion, a challenge to courage, or a reliance on creativity with some notions of Incompleteness and Insecurity.

Actor: Ace of Engines
This person or creature will represent someone delivering a message or package or someone creating or dealing with art exhibiting aspects of Energy and Passion.

Action: Reversed VIII Engineer
The main action of the story will be finding the right conversation or undertaking a quest involving Brutality and Audacity that is occuring to the actor.

This story would likely be about an artist who in the middle of a large project was forcefully removed from that project.  The players may need to find resolution for the artist and deal with whatever caused the rift between the artist and the art.

The next row in the grid will comprise the Event: Tone, History, Escalation.

Event Component
Tone: Reversed II Aviatrix
The Tone of the event will keep the aspects of the event esoteric and strange, offsetting with aspects of Psychism and guesswork.

History: Reversed Seven of Engines
The History of the event will involve a previous exchange of art or ideas and the effects afterward influenced by Paranoia and Anxiety.

Escalation: IV Emperor
As the event unfolds, you will be answering the question, "How well do you deal with the bizarre?" with Leadership and Authenticity in mind.

The event that kicks off the story may come in a dream or in a series of omens or with a visit to a psychic.  The character will learn that the commission of the artwork comes from someone who had a great deal of fear either for need of the art or because of it.  As indicated, the players will need to deal with the bizarre, specifically a bizarreness that stems from someone in charge.

Row Two
Story Component
Theme: Reversed II Aviatrix
The grand idea will have something to do with gaining wisdom, discovering relics, deciphering languages, or witnessing worship with some notions of Psychism and guesswork.

Actor: Reversed Seven of Engines
This person or creature will represent someone delivering a message or package or someone creating or dealing with art exhibiting aspects of Paranoia and Anxiety.

Action: IV Emperor
The main action of the story will be finding the right conversation or undertaking a quest involving Leadership and Authenticity that is occuring to the actor.

This story might be about a messenger en route to deliver information about the truth of a relic to a person in authority.  The messenger would probably understand the importance of the message they carry and fear what might unfold if the message is not delivered to the correct person.

The next row in the grid will comprise the Event: Tone, History, Escalation.

Event Component
Tone: Reversed Six of Airships
For the Tone of the event, Keep the aspects of the event mental (in the mind) with aspects of Prejudice and Living in the Past.

History: Reversed V Horologer
The History of the event will involve a forgotten or abandoned temple or the site of an artifact influenced by Clinging to Tradition.

Escalation: Reversed XIX Solarium
As the event unfolds, you will be answering the question, "How well do you deal with the bizarre?" with Complexity and Burnout in mind.

The event that kicks off the story will involve an ancient sect or religious order that seeks to either maintain the old way of doing things and despises anything new.  Their battle to accomplish this will likely deal with illusion and fear.  As indicated, the players will need to deal with the bizarre, specifically a bizarreness that comes from many angles and seeks to break them down piece by piece through attrition.

Row Three
Story Component
Theme: Reversed Six of Airships
The grand idea will have something to do with Justice, Honor, a struggle, or the mind with some notions of Prejudice and Living in the Past.

Actor: Reversed V Horologer
This person or creature will be solitary and strange exhibiting aspects of Clinging to Tradition.

Action: Reversed XIX Solarium
The main action of the story will be finding the right conversation or undertaking a quest involving Complexity and Burnout that is occuring to the actor.

This story might be about a creature or person that is a relic of the past unable to let go of the old ways.  This being will be struggling to come to grips with the memory of what was and the reality of what is.  The characters will need to find a way to have the right conversation with this thing as it weaves increasing more complex layers of protection around itself in order to survive.

The next row in the grid will comprise the Event: Tone, History, Escalation.

Event Component
Tone: Reversed Four of Engines
The Tone of the event will keep the aspects of the event to a more ethereal or spiritual feel with aspects of Incompleteness and Insecurity.

History: Ace of Engines
The History of the event will involve a previous exchange of art or ideas and the effects afterward influenced by Energy and Passion.

Escalation: Reversed VIII Engineer
As the event unfolds, you will be answering the question, "How well do you deal with the bizarre?" with Brutality and Audacity in mind.

The event that kicks off the story will involve a shared passion for creating art or discussing the exchange of ideas, but the exchange or creation was not always even.  The being from above must have sensed that the other was holding back and this may be the reason they remain couched in the drapings of the past.  As indicated, the players will need to deal with the bizarre, specifically the brazenness of the event and how insecurity and harsh words turned to an unspecified brutality.

=====

So you’ve seen my three interpretations of the cards, yours will likely differ.  The players may choose one path to follow.  All 9 cards go to a discard, and the players should roleplay the situation to the best of their ability.  When the players come to a fork in the road or a point of indecision, the next narrative grid can be spread to help them on their way.  Instead of Story and Event however, the readings will be for Environment and Clarification.  Each of these have their own ways to interpret the cards as well.  Sometimes an additional clarification may be required before moving on.  A single three card clarification can be asked before the next narrative spread.

If there are less than 9 cards left in the deck after a discard.  Shuffle all cards back together and continue the game.
