Re: (OOC) Out of Character Discussions

In reply to Birahu (msg # 41):

Hell yeah, brother!  I've already got four.  Consider them part of the party's inventory, now.

Roy Bought: Rations (6)
-Torches (10)
-Waterskins (3)

Could he also drop his fishing net on the mule?  I mean, it's not too heavy, but, yanno.  That, and the sacks, will go to the party, pending your approval.
Couldn't really make up my mind on what I wanted to equip Roy with, gear-wise, so I took some hints from those equipment kits in the final pages of Palace of the Silver Princess.

Re: (OOC) Out of Character Discussions

I assumed we didn't know each other beforehand so I left this kind of thing for in character.

But I'll gladly pay some gold to a communal fund, though I suspect Raymond and I will also keep everyone stocked on fresh food supplies most normal days

And after the adventure concludes, we can open up a restaurant chain!  Peg and Ray's Mover's Meals!  Ray's stuff will all be seafood, and probably fried.  Maybe with optional spices.  Dunno about Margaret's dishes.
Margaret will manage it very well, but Ray will get bored of it after a while and sign his side of things off to the nephew of the clerk he'll end up marrying, who will defer to a "business manager", who's really just some two-bit thief.

Birahu, could I put my hempen rope on your mule, too?  I'll make sure to roll another check or two while I'm out rolling Survival to make sure that your critter gets good meals!

Re: (OOC) Out of Character Discussions

In reply to Raymond Peregrinus (msg # 52):

Survival but no Profession (cook) for me sadly. in Core, the Barbarian and Fighter are both Profession-less while every other class gets it. That being said I think I might rearrange some points to do that if only because assisting with cooking at the very least would be smart, and two points to get to use a trained only skill is kinda nice.

Re: (OOC) Out of Character Discussions

Ellys:

. . . to make pots and pans?

Edit: to clarify, the skill for cooking in D&D 3.5 is Profession (cook). As there's no basis for a Craft skill being used in the books but there is for a Profession skill on certain npcs and hireling tables. Do I, an amateur cook, agree with this? Hell no. Cooking is both an int and wis based skill, and had I the points to do so I'd gladly pump both a custom craft skill and the profession skill to represent it. But much like the Perform skill centrally focused on in BoEF, it's easy to make an argument for ANY ability score applying to almost any skill, so the cut and dry decision needs to be made.

But that's not necessarily this character, and as I play characters well versed in cooking normally it seemed like I should maybe ease up a touch.

Further rant about the Profession skill: So barbarians, fighters and a few classes after (knight, warlock, etc) don't get it. Meaning that those classes are worse than a commoner at cooking, siege engineering, sailing, etc. Despite sailing and being a siege engineer being roles mostly given to reaving pirate barbarians and mercenary captain fighters. It's annoying

Ya learn something new every day.  I'm gonna start taking that, now.  A while back, I used to just put "Basketweaver" under Profession and never take it.

In reply to Margaret (msg #56):

I also agree that that's terrible.  I can see Barbarians (as in, the warriors of those cultures) not getting professions...

Re: (OOC) Out of Character Discussions

Birahu: Precisely! A profession skill covers a lot of niche small knowledge and stuff. Precisely the sort of thing the write-up in the PHB suggests, and Profession (soldier) is absolutely apt.

Player's Handbook pg. 37:
The questing knight, the conquering overlord, the king's champion, the elite foot soldier, the hardened mercenary, and the bandit king - all are fighters. Fighters can be stalwart defenders of those in need, cruel marauders, or gutsy adventurers. Some are among the land's best souls, willing to face death for the greater good. Others are among the worst, with no qualms about killing for private gain, or even for sport. Fighters who are not actively adventuring may be soldiers, guards, bodyguards, champions, or criminal enforcers. An adventuring fighter might call himself a warrior, a mercenary, a thug, or simply an adventurer.

Yet they have no charisma skills besides Intimidate, no criminal skills . . . a few later things "fixed" this, the Zhentarim fighter in Forgotten Realms has Diplomacy, the Thug in Core 3.5 (not PHB only, but d20srd) has Bluff, Gather Information, Knowledge (local), Sleight of Hand. Urban Skills for Cityscape allows trading Handle Animal out for Gather Information and Ride for Tumble

Raymond: I mean, I see your logic but I disagree with it for the following reason. Profession covers herbalism, midwifery, brewing (as mentioned above), gardening, and a host of other skills which certainly showed up in "barbaric" cultures. Now you could say that the focused warriors of a tribe wouldn't get these but here we're making an argument for restricting based on culture, and I'd propose that not taking ranks in the skill represents a lack of training in that skill, not that there should be a restriction to begin with. Also this doesn't explain "urban barbarians" like myself (from a rural farm but bear with me) who are normal people otherwise. My character isn't particularly skilled or cultured, but growing up on a farm and not being able TO farm well (Profession skill!) kinda informs her character backstory
