Well, it's just early evening for me, so posted! Excited to get started.

Seems we have been carved into groups as well. I see those of us in group 2 number a paladin, a fighter, a thief, a druid, and a warlock. Interesting mixture. My future plans for Leysa will also develop as the group moves forward. I am eyeing Ranger, Druid, Sorcerer, and Paladin as possible additions or just sticking to straight warlock. Whatever I do, I will stick to the nature theme and think I am building toward a caster focused build. What were other peeps' plans for advancement/archetypes?

The archetype I'm eyeing is the horizon walker. This entire character is basically just me trying out something completely new.  We don't have character sheets yet (at least I don't) so do we dive right into the action while we don't need them yet or is this still the preperation phase we're in?

That's true for all the characters here though. My plan is to go full Moon Druid all the way down the line but if something comes up through the role-play where it would make sense to mix things up, I'm adaptable.

Had to knock out after a long day yesterday but I'll try and have my character sheet up and ready before end of day today. I'm at GMT-7 so our posting schedules may be out of phase but I'll keep up nonetheless

Finally got my character sheet done. At least the important parts. How do the rest of you handle spells? I can't bring myself to enter the entire spell description so I just put a brief reminder about MOST of its effect. And yes, I can cast spells as a 1st level ranger because VARIANT HUMANS, BABY!

I generally just pop in the spell name and mark if it requires concentration or not. But I also have a compendium of spells on my phone for easy reference any time I need it.

I usually put the short form of what the spell does if I think I need to.  Otherwise I put the book and pg number for the spell.  That way it's easy to look it up.  Going Druid this time means I get to plug and play with my spells everyday so sites like donjon.bin.sh are super handle this way.

Planning to stay straight fighter with Gunnar.

 Gunnar has a drum and Mary has a guitar so we're halfway to a band. With Gunnar and Robyn we are 'Big and Small and the Three Ladies'.

Heights are interesting. Our two fighters are 4'8" and 6'4", talk about Mutt and Jeff.
How tall is Leysa? Average for Dragonborn is 6'3", which puts her just shy of Gunnar.

So Robyn can just dress in spiked armor and Gunnar and Leysa can swing him around like a Morningstar.

Great, we can be considered an unconventional rock n roll band, with Robyn being repeatedly used whenever theirs a guitar solo.

Tiny tweak to Atraxus. I decided to go Fighter rather than Ranger. The character concept is still pretty much the same, but with more staying power in a fight. :-p

Nice. Still not perfect but it'll do. Leysa is 6'5", so on the tall end for dragonborn. I am basing her off a classic green dragon, so verticality. I linked the image I am using in my profile. I am still hunting for an image I like for Leysa.

FWIW, I have no plans to multi-class with Qui-Lin.  She's walking the Monk's path. ;)

LOL!  I've been playing since 1980 with AD&D.  I have since then played every version of D&D including the Chainmail prequel and both the red and blue box versions of the OG D&D.

Which version are you calling 1.5 though?  Never head of any of them called that.

Currently DMing a D&D 5e game for my local group, but we often play many different systems over the decades.

Gamers gonna game. New style, old style, a new twist on an old favorite, tons of fun to be had. I started in about 1984 with AD&D, but I think I have played every version including D&D.

MSHRPG, Cyberpunk 2020, Rifts, Shadowrun, Vampire. Good stuff.

I play a live game every week, online.  I would define it as Wednesday lunchtime, but it is Tuesday for all our other players.  They are in Ohio and Arizona.  We use Google Hangouts, which is very easy to use and rarely has issues.  All the things Zoom does, but free.  We are playing 5e.  We have 3 different campaigns, depending on who is available.  My daughter-in-law runs the oldest, we just leveled up to 20 in that, after fighting the avatar of a goddess.

Wow, it's getting rare for me to be on the young side of things anymore. Haha! You are all old!

I cut my teeth in the nineties when D&D was at a lull. WoD, Shadowrun, Cyberpunk, etc. As long as it wasn't D&D, I gave it a shot. The d20 system has always bored me statistically though 5e is a great improvement. Even played Rolemaster/Spacemaster!! Ran with a group that liked playing older systems. I even GM'd Paladium Fantasy a couple times. Anything Chaosium or GW made was interesting as well.

Good grief and my daughter's only going on 13. I better have at least another decade before I am a grandfather...

Our go to system if we want to completely homebrew the genre is BRP which is the base system by Chaosium.  We've done everything form Space Explorers to Weird Wild West with it.

Shadowrun has gotten old for us though and Cyberpunk is only really good for one shots now with how deadly it can be to PCs.

Have any of you guys ever played Toon or Paranoia?  LOL

I think I played a once shot of Toon once. Definitely played Paranoia on several occasions. Did you ever play HOL (Human Occupied Landfill)? It was a comedy/satire RP put out by Black Dog Press, White Wolf's adult imprint. I used to own a copy but lost them. They are hard to find anymore.

BRP is a really awesome system. I've played Stormbringer and Call of Cthulhu many times and was quite happy when Chaosium released it. Was Pendragon also an old Chaosium system? I forget.

Yes Pendragon is also by Chaosium.  I had that system but only got to play it once. :(

Never played HOL to my knowledge.

The online live game I play has a 14-15 year old.  He is learning a lot from us "old" folk, but he does play his character well.  It isn't the age of the player, it is the amount of effort the player puts into his character.

I started RPGing back in the ‘80s, mainly AD&D with my big bro and some friends from our village. Then I picked up Dragon Warriors and DMed that to school mates. We also tried a few other systems like Star Frontiers, Shadowrun and Rolemaster, but most didn’t last long.

Then big hiatus until about 10 years ago when I discovered RPoL. Now RP exclusively here as no time for live play due to family commitments (kids with SEND). Here I mostly play 5e, but also some Twilight 2000 and CoC.

Now kids, just play quietly over there and we’ll get some ice cream on the way home if you’re good...

I don't know that I can get that here.  In fact, I can't find a good fudge topping in Australia.  They do have Hershey's though. LOL

I can't really eat chocolate or such myself; they're way too sugary and make my stomach suffer.  -_-  On the plus side, I've found that traditional Japanese sweets like dango and red bean buns are much more to my tastes and enjoyment.

I LUV chocolate, but since the state's largest candy store only an hour or so from where I live, I can get candy from around the world.  Including Japanese Rice Candy, and other asian candies I can't even translate into English.  Plus European delights like Jammy Dodgers, Stroopwafels, Tim Tams (yes I know there are Aussie, but the store has them in the Brit section).  Haven't gone there yet this year, but they are open since May as an "essential business".  May have to plan a trip soon.....

I can't get a lot of my favorites here.  I love a Clark Bar, Zero, Payday.  I know a store where I can get Butterfingers, but it costs a lot.

Ugh, buying imported things that are awesome. So hard to find good cheese here so I can make proper bake-mac. And brownies, proper brownies. I love the Chinese meal boxes, skewers, and other traditional foods. Don't think I could ever go back to American Kung Pao chicken now. However, I have come to actually hate traditional Chinese sweets other than candied ginger. Sweet beans are not my things. The texture is still bean like, so I want beans how I grew up with them but then they are sweet and often cold. Blech! The juxtaposition doesn't work in my mind. Mochi is alright but not traditional Chinese. haha. Can be hard to find here. And the Chinese version of cake is disgusting. I repeat, disgusting. Taro does not belong in cake.

Candied ginger is swell. Most the traditional candy shops sell it by the scoop here.

They only opened their first US location this year, near Chicago.  The have one in Changi Airport (Singapore).  They are all over Australia.  Authentic Mexican food.  Very good stuff.

FYI on holiday for the next week, posting may be erratic depending upon internet access and signal.

I've got a Strength of 17 and an Athletics bonus of +5. I can either try my luck climbing down there, or pulling people up.

If you can jump 20 feet, then bring the rope with you. (Someone mentioned a rope, I think that was you.) Tie one end of the rope to one side and bring the other end over to where you jump. Rope bridge!

The problem in that is that one person has to be left behind in order to UNTIE the rope so we can use it to haul in some survivors. The way back has some even worse complications.

With the update, that's probably not feasible. Long jumps are equal to your Str score, so I'm still 3 feet short. If someone has a grappling hook, they might be able to catch hold and climb across.

I also have rope (I think anyone with an explorer's pack should have 50' hempen rope), so we should have some other options.

In the name of a dramatic exit, I only brought some weapons ...

As an experienced guide, Atraxus always comes prepared. :-p

It's always worrying when players go quiet any time, though especially as of late.  I'm in another game where one of our players - a very active and involved guy who'd been playing with us for well over a year - abruptly went totally silent last month.  We haven't heard a whisper from him despite various attempts to get in contact, so we're all worried about what that might mean.

It's especially worrying when the vanish and their last post is "I'm going for a COVID test".

GM, from my position what can I see?

I'm assuming the characters would be staying at least somewhat together.  So with Lehai and Qin taking the lead, you would be anywhere behind them, or even catch up as they pause in the ship's lounge.  If you were trailing back in the stairwell and looking, you might even see the source of the shrieking.

Not really...Renaxian is more of a barbaric skald, seeking the glories of the ancient past...perhaps? Maybe we encounter each other while Renaxian was seeking out other Dragonborn tribes, if there was one in the area of your forest?

I have no clue what this world is like, so maybe. I could see me knowing a few barbarian tribes though. Maybe one of the Druids visited a Dragon Born tribe, and I came along to carry his stuff. I could see being intrigued in your music, if you performed. Seems to be the Druids might know something about the history of the lands as well, they might know where old tribes of your people lived in the past.

True, one can be a caster, the other a shapeshifter. I am debating what spells to select, since I envision Renaxian as a warrior historian, hmmmmm, healing is always nice...

I am not opposed to have meet others, Renaxian is from a desolate place where the Dragonborn live by barbaric codes of honor, clinging to the glories of an ancient and pretty much forgotten (if not made up) Dragon Empire.

This is what I currently got as background idea:

Zalister wants to see the (natural) wonders of the world.

Lean and of intermediate height Zalister has black hair and green eyes. As the small forest he calls home becomes more and more encroached by civilization Zalister sets out to find places still untouched, see the wonders of the natural world and also try to understand what drives the civilized races to destroy the balance of nature.

I am currently leaning more in the direction a circle of the land (forest) druid, which means spellcaster, priority healing but am willing to discuss so we do not have equal characters.

I am also open to have met others on the journey most probably. Though I can also change the destruction of my home to a wildfire on the hands of some civilists or some such :D

Zalister : That's cool, because I wanted to go Circle of the Moon anyway. As to the chracter sheets, I just grabbed the one off of RPoL's resource page, they had a few, I picked the one I liked best.

Daladain: I love those cartoons, I even bought the Asterix game on Steam, though you don't get to play as Getafix, at least not as far in as I got.

I have a quick question on the Frightened condition. How long does it last, or do I have a chance to save again?

You can try a new save for the new round.  Remember that it does not prevent you from doing things, only limits some things, and applies a disadvantage to melee.

Yeah. I was armed with a sword and shield and didn't want to swap out to a ranged item for the attack just in case they came toward me, so I was kind of stuck with what I could do. :-p

This week I have oral surgery, what fun!

Dentists are a sad lot, boring, always looking down in the mouth.  I hate that the ask you questions you can't answer because they have so much stuff in your mouth.

The reason they ask questions in my opinion is to get your mind less focused on what they are doing in your mouth, at least a little bit. Not that it does much, but eh, teeth are important.

I had one years ago who asked questions, *thought* he understood me but never did. Very weird.

Sadly, it was too serious and I was groggy for a couple of days afterwards.

It is a horrible experience.

Nothing like just getting a cavity filled.  That's just a simple thing.

If you are still young and have all of them, take care of your teeth.  Brush, floss, etc, religiously because you do not want this in your future.

I am in the unfortunate problem of needing several fillings (not as serious I know) but currently the the UK dentists are only offering emergency work due to COVID. I had a temporary filling in March that needs sorting, plus a couple of others. Bloody annoying!!!!

For all "auto" leveling up, use the hit die rounded up:  D4 is a 3, D6 is a 4, D10 is a 6.

Take the xp total to the minimum for the new level.

Away for weekend, which catch up when I can...

I remember living a military life, many years ago, and we had lots of marching poems and songs.  It eased the drudgery of it.  I find it interesting that it would irritate a military person.  I started it as a joke, as my character was a bard and there was a non-bard singing all the time, but it stuck with the character, so I decided to just keep it up.  Simple poetry is fairly easy, but sometimes it gets hard to find something that fits the situation.  When poems won't work, it is all action.  When the DM says "enough", then I quit with poem stuff.

I don't mind it, so long as you don't mine my poking fun if/when we ever travel together. :-p

No issue here.  Pretty thick skinned.  Sometimes thick headed.

I used to detest Bards, couldn’t see the point of them and found them annoying, and steadfastly refused to play one...

Then I decided to give it a go in another RPoL game and I love it! I find that you really have to commit though, you can’t be half-arsed about it!

I am trying to convey Alison's general attitudes and how different 2 bards can be rather than conveying any personal feelings about (terrible) poetry. ;-)

My very first AD&D character was a bard with psionics.  The dice were my friend that day.

You are right about it being a commitment.  The poetry, while rudimentary at times, still means every IC post has to be thought out and fit the situation, including timing.  If we were in battle, unless it is a poem for inspiration, it better be short.

Plot Hook: Escort Baron Sanzi was also in there.

I do expect splitting into two parties was part of the plan. It's a bit chaotic otherwise.

Splitting is definitely part of the plan.  Anything over 6 becomes way too clunky in a single thread.

Just a clarification, since Abadon wasn't around for the whole airship incident.  The baroness's ship is a ship ship, not the air ship, that was another story.  The baroness brought Leysa and Lysander here... and Robyn, when he's back!

Okay, if we are only three we will need to think about our roles. I am a sorcerer and am pretty sneaky, but I am not a fighter at all so should not be at the front in combat. If we get in a fight I will immediately retreat to use offensive/defensive magic and my crossbow. Daggers are for an emergency!

At this level, I am not great at fighting, but probably good at talking our way out of a fight.

Oh, Leysa might be the tankiest then. That's...

Well, I'd be fine if I could get my hands on some better armor and a shield.

I can always whack them over the head with my lute. LOL

Sounds like the meeting is drawing to a close in the call of the mountain thread. If someone would go shopping for the supplies we will need for the voyage as a group then I say meet at the ship.

We're going to skip to the ship, but you may shop as Rolen suggests.  If there is anything you want, (and can afford!) just make a note that you are getting it.

Rant was interesting, I will add my 2.3 cents.  I think there are a lot of folk who derive more pleasure from creating the character than from playing it.  They have "a" concept, but no real goal.  Concepts are nice, but if you don't know where you might want to take a character, you can never get there.  So, they make up the concept and they are done.  Set a goal, folks.  Know where to want to get to, then determine how you get there, and then, adapt! because it is never that simple.

Rant over, back to our regularly scheduled fun.

I agree with GM on the whole misunderstood, tragic back story, lone wolf thing. It’s good to have a past, but really it should be for either a bit of flavour to spice up a PC, or give the GM some hooks for storylines. Too melodramatic just becomes unplayable and risks alienating other players if the GM goes too far into it.

I personally love making tragic backstories for my characters apparently lol, but I don't tend to make lone wolf types or those who are looking for...pity or anything. I just like to have things in their backstory that help motivate them or help me to understand them.

I am a bit confused. The Paladin went after a good gold dragon? Why? And the people in the overtly good place lie about knowing where one is? Can you see my confusion?

It could be a greater good thing. IIRC, Derne is trying to find the source of the holy water. If finding and sharing that source would be harmful to the gold dragons that live there, I can see why the paladin order and other goodly folk would stay mum about it.

I took the description as Derne's holy quest to find a lost holy item, the source of the holy water into the lake.  It was not that he was hunting dragons, but that it seemed likely that the holy item was either resident in the dragons' demesne, or potentially that they were protecting it, or perhaps indeed central to their home and its safety - does the relic guard the dragons, or the dragons guard the relic, or is it simply lost within one dragon's hoard?
Is Derne lost to the forces of evil along the trail of no animals?
Is Derne prisoner to the dragons - "Welcome, but now you can never leave, friend, sorry."
Is Derne stepping up to be protector to the relic and the dragons ala the bravest of three brothers guarding the Grail?

The paladin order being mum about location of hidden holy relics is one thing, and I agree that would make sense v. "Oh the Holy Handgrenade of Antioch?  Third vault, second rack, second shelf, fourth on the shelf - password for the magical wards is 'Fluffernutter'."

The lying about searches for it, and where the paladin is, and not bothering to check or monitor on their paladins out and about the world... really?
Not caring about the evils the paladins were out to stop?  Even if this is a "we're pretending X to test their metal"... it's really bad.  REALLY bad.  You're projecting to the world that your people don't matter, their quests are not important enough to see if the bad things are stopped or lost things found... oh, but trust us to do whatever is needed??

I think we're jumping to conclusions here. There are different shades of paladin orders (especially in 5e where the oaths show a lot of variance), and there could be a lot of very good reasons for them to keep quiet about a place where Gold Dragons live. The very best one might be that the gold dragons want the place to stay a secret (hence the cleric's oath to keep it that way).

If I'm remembering things correctly, Derne went out to find the source of the holy water (not  hunt a gold dragon). He set out knowing only that the water was holy, not what caused it. He may very well be heading over there to see the truth with his own eyes.

Have I mentioned how much I love shape water cantrip?

Honestly, I think we should follow the Goblin lead. The land is aiding our journey, pointing out the creatures that should not belong, and the Goblin intruders might have some insight as to what might happen if we offend this place. Also, Atraxus speaks Goblin, so I should be able to get some information from them.

I'm not going to jump to conclusions and say that it will be easy, but it certainly seems like the land is willing to let us to find them.

It's okay, it's very stressful but it happens every now and then.  I have one of those jobs with a highly variable work load.

@ GM: Cool, that is a quick resolution to our IC dilemma. Atraxus speaks Goblin, so would he know what they are saying?

Indeed.

Depending what happens, we can lash the two boats together, and Abadon can cover the pair of close vessels under the same illusion - of a large rock or a cloud or floating tree limbs.  That should help with issues along the water.  Also very nice not leaving tracks or scent trail.

I cannot disguise the boats after we leave, so if we do go away from the water, despite the guide's direction, then Atraxus will need to do some survival concealment of the boats.

Sorry, it's going to take me some time to post. Life has gotten super busy at the moment, so I'll get something up ASAP.

I don't want to railroad us, so I'll hold on another post of action until Atraxus or Alison do so... otherwise we keep a'floatin' upstream :)

Are you wanting to NPC her, replace her, or remove her?

The reason I ask is that we have an easy write her out point here, rather than the awkwardness of explaining why she does nothing, says nothing, isn't involved, and yet would be part of the "team".

If she is being replaced or DM PC, that's fine.

If we are looking at a write-out, Abadon can suggest that she return to town to alert them about the goblins, and provide updated report that they are tracking the river, and gathering in numbers, even with larger creatures in the region.  Whether that is duty to the quest/town/people, or loss of interest/face-saving... doesn't really matter, but can be played both ways.

You'd know where to find them by tracking and listening, but they are no longer in sight.
(Tracking if you let them get ahead of you, of course.)

They haven't been very quiet, so you've been able to follow them by sound, and you know they are out in the woods on the other side of the river, out of sight of the bank.
