Being a sailing ship with a few experienced navigators, the party has something most people really don't: a good sense of where they are. The map below shows the great island the sailors call Momokawehe, the origin of "chaos storms." No one lives there, they say. Too dangerous. Nearby is Delusion Break, where you thought you were headed.
Where the sailors say they
will go, soon, but not now, too dangerous.
North is Rapatua. It's the southernmost settlement of the Honoa confederacy- a broad alliance of smaller semi-independent groups, not a single kingdom. Rapatua is a small, recent settlement. It's normally skipped by voyagers as not worth the bother. But it's the closest place they can rest, and it seem wrong to the sailors to flee the storm any further than they have to.
The Honoan boat you are on is fast, a light double hulled sailing ship. With the wind coming from the southeast it makes good time. But the wind and waves pick up, it is soon bouncing over the wave crests.
Sailors voice their hope that the people of Rapatua have left lights on. They're supposed to, every one of their coastal communities is supposed to have lights at night, even if it is torches burning on the beach. It will be dark when they get there. Normally they have no fear about sailing at night. In fact, navigation becomes easier with the stars out. But with the sky clouded, and a storm on the way, they much prefer a place to rest. Another reason not to go beyond Rapatua.
