Chapter One - The Smallest Light

Zelda II - The Adventure of Link - 01 - Title by William Lawson 5

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA
The Shadow of Courage

On his 16th birthday, years after defeating Demon King Ganon, Link set out on a quest to retrieve the mythical third Triforce, that of Courage. With it, he could break the sleeping spell on Princess Zelda I and bring about a new era of prosperity to the land.

Months have passed, and wicked clouds have formed in the skies over East Hyrule. With no word from Link, hope has fallen under the Shadow of Courage.

The sun shone down on the town of Rauru, where the townsfolk were hard at the morning's work. Bakers, butchers, and builders went about their daily tasks, farmers tended their crops, and members of the town watch patrolled both the road and forest sides of town in case monsters approached. While they dispatched the occasional chuchu or megmat, the real concern was the monstrous beastmen from the forest, the bokoblins. Despite the threat, despite the sky to the east appearing dark even during the day, life went on and work was still to be done.

Tekni, Loem, and Biowl sat in the nearly empty pub, discussing their plans to find ancient ruins in the very forest the guards were to protect people from. They had no money to speak of, so if they were to spend another night with a roof overhead, then today had to be the day. With weapons and tools as their only supplies, they would have to find or make what they needed out in the forest itself.

[Welcome to The Shadow of Courage! The team will be starting off in Rauru Town, just east of North Castle. You can click Game Map at the top to see a rough outline of where we are, in 8-bit form! Please format any OOC text like this in orange square brackets, and if you have any questions, please ask in the OOC chatter thread.

And now, it's your turns!]

Chapter One - The Smallest Light
Loem appeared refreshed as he gently set an empty glass down on the table. "Aah! That tasted good. What do you guys think?"

Sunlight shone on him, for the group had picked a table close to a window. He smiled at his partners, then gazed outside. The town looked great today, an upbeat image of daily life. When he looked over the dark sky in the distance, his smile faded slightly. He quickly turned back to the table, restoring his expression.

"Well, that's the last of it. Tekni, Biowl, are you two ready to head out?"

Chapter One - The Smallest Light
If his Hylian counterpart was comparable to a fresh morning flower, Biowl wasn't exactly on the same wavelength. Rather than booze the man-sized owl craved for something to fill his stomach in the early hours of the day. Thankfully they were lucky enough to find a pub who served something to eat alongside the drinks. But ever since the Rito had finished the slice of pie he had ordered he had been glaring at the empty plate with a dignified yet piercing gaze as if it had somehow insulted his great ancestors.
He answered Loem without looking away from the arrogant tableware.

"The taste was nothing to write home about but it was enjoyable. I wouldn't say the same for the portion size."

Hylian cooking lacked finesse overall but it wasn't all bad. If nothing else their pastries were a fine example of craftmanship. Biowl was quite fond of that apple pie even if he was too prideful to admit his sweet tooth. Too bad they didn't scale it up to large birdman size, much to his annoyance. Sadly the state of his finances didn't allow him to order anything larger or anything else for that matter. With a sigh he reluctantly gave up on his duel with the far-too-small dish and turned his attention toward his comrades. He spoke with a confident, if somewhat snarky, tone as he stoop up.

"Of course I am ready. This town hardly has anything worth our time anyway."

Then toward the usually stoic Gerudo with a smoother voice.

"Dear lady, any info on where we are headed ?"

Chapter One - The Smallest Light
Tekni retrieved the notebook of information from her satchel, fidgeting lightly as she turned through the pages. Compared to the eager Hylian and the grouchy Rito, she came off as somewhat milquetoast, almost timid. At least, that was how she would have come across were she a typical girl rather than a hulking, stone-faced amazon.

"W-well, we had planned to explore the mysterious cavern in the forest, yes? The one with rumors of ancient ruins in its depths past all the fearsome monsters?"

She still wasn't really comfortable with talking to people. Or having friends, if her travelling companions could be called that. She wasn't yet sure if she liked all of this more than the scholarly solitude she was used to, but the times she was finally able to share her passions with another were among her happiest memories, and she's aware that together they could uncover much more than she could alone, so she carries on so that she may gain many joyous memories and new discoveries in future.

[Did I do well? I'm not quite sure how much or what type of stuff to write yet.]

Chapter One - The Smallest Light
One of the few other patrons in the pub turned to the rather private conversation, then ambled up to the group.

"Couldn't 'elp but over'ear ye've got plans to 'ead into th' woods. Keep yer wits about ya in there, friends. Th' monsters ya speak of are truly dangerous ta those who don't 'ave, say, a map. Now, I 'appen to 'ave such a thing, tells ya where the goods yer after can be found by the shortest path, but I can't just go sharin' such a thing for free. Tell ya wot, you come back alive an' deliver proof ye've been there, and that'll be payment enough fer me. Folks 'round here thought I was just makin' things up when I told 'em wot's there, an' I never could get any proof. What say ya, friends?"

In reply to Book of Mudora (msg # 5):

Tekni speaks up flusteredly, trying to get this over with so she can inch towards acquiring a much-needed map. She's still learning how to be conversational with strangers, and she never backs down from an opportunity to learn! She just wishes it wasn't so uncomfortable...

She hurries out "W-what sort of proof, m-ma'am?" with an unsteady voice.

The woman shrugged and leaned down a bit.

"Miss, anythin' ya c'n find that says ya were there. Some treasure, trinket, or bauble. Somethin' ya can't find elsewhere 'round here."

Chapter One - The Smallest Light
Ah yes. A mysterious (and apparently quite drunk) individual in a tavern. A vague and poorly defined goal. And a bunch of youngsters full of hopes and dreams to tackle the danger of the road ahead. Wasn't that a quest in its purest form ? Biowl would have found it quite amusing if he didn't have such troubles understanding that damned woman. Her nonsense was hidden behind a thick accent that made her undignified peasant tone even harsher to listen to. And while the Gerudo's struggle to communicate had a certain charm to it, the Rito took it upon himself to rescue her from her dreadful adversary.

"But of course, it would be our pleasure to restore your honor with these fine folks. I am sure it won't be too difficult to find something to prove your words to your brethren. This map of yours would be a precious help to our quest. I can guarantee you great results."

He even added a little bow with it while remaining careful not to overdo it, mimicking knightly attitude. He didn't want her to feel mocked, even though it took a bit of effort to hold back a snarky comment or two. He was actually a bit wary of whatever kind of peasant woman was in front of him. Honestly the setup was too good to be true and the Rito wasn't one to put his faith his coincidence. He was half convinced there was some trick behind this deal but playing along seemed like the most profitable option still.

Of course Biowl had little intention to go out of his way to satisfy that silly request. But it would leave a sour taste in his mouth if he didn't uphold his end of a bargain. If the map was worth the effort that is...

"You don't happen to know a little more about the monsters you saw by any chance ? Anything could help"

[Was that ok ? I'm still a bit unsure as well. Hope the english is correct. Also, don't mind whatever rude thoughts Biowl might have >>"

Also, seem a bit unnecessary here but I suppose Biowl would make an insight check in this situation, since he is paranoid and all. Unless this call for a Guile/Influence one ? ]

Chapter One - The Smallest Light
"Bokoblins, demons th' size of a man, but with muscles like a horse! They call th' forest their home, built up tree forts to claim territ'ry. I certainly found 'em, marked 'em on the map. Luckily m'legs were swift n'm'steps true. I got outta there before they decided the chase was worth it. Then you got deelers, huge tree spiders that swoop down from the branches to grab at food below. Those n'chuchus are the biggest problems once you're in the forest proper. Afore that, you'll have ta deal with megmats n'the like out on the plains. Those're the hoppin' rats you find in the great outdoors."

[Go ahead and give me that Insight roll against her Concentration of 12.]

Chapter One - The Smallest Light
Tekni gulps with fear as she looks back to the woman from the cursory notes of the threats ahead that she had started writing. "I-I see. We'll do our best, m-ma'am."

She turns back to her travelling companions. "Shall we depart?"

Chapter One - The Smallest Light
Well that was quite the long list of threats to be sure but nothing Biowl was particulary afraid of. None of those sad creatures could fly after all... Though the past had proven him that Bokoblins could be deceptively crafty at times. Their little party lacked fire power to tackle too many ennemies head on. Surely sneaking around would be the wiser play here.

"As lovely as this dump is, I see no reason to linger here. So yes, let's depart. You can rest assured that your trust is well placed with us m'am"

That was a lie of course. Or more like an exageration. Biowl didn't know nearly enough about those companions of his to feel confident about this. Then again his own awesomeness would easily make up for any sloppiness on their part. Still, it might be good to learn more before facing more dangers together. As soon as the group was left alone he asked Tekni with a casual tone.

"I've been meaning to ask since we met... From what little I know of your kin, your shyness toward strangers is quite unusual for your tribe. Well towards other women at least. Is there any reason behind it ? Surely someone as large as you has no reason to be scared. Not that I understand struggling to talk to begin with."

For somebody who breathed both arrogance and deception, it was hard to fathom that someone could face difficulties with something as simple as a talk with a peasant. If anything, wasn't it harder to hold back showing off your overwhelming worth to such mediocre conversation ?

Chapter One - The Smallest Light
"W-well, I'm simply... not used to talking to people yet..." Tekni sounded more sheepish than usual in her reply, but found the strength to continue. "I spent most of my time at home studying o-or tinkering... I was pretty lonely." The slightest of frowns had appeared on her stony face.

Sensing the beginnings of an awkward silence as she stowed her belongings, she kept talking. "I-I'm trying to get better, though! Honest!"

Chapter One - The Smallest Light
Truly that Gerudo was a perfect example of a bookworm. Her large frame made the image rather comical but Biowl felt no need for sarcasm there. Even though her struggle sounded alien to him, he had respect for those so dedicated to their goals whatever those may be. Beside she was seeking to improve on her weaknesses, what was there to mock her for ?

"I see... The brain rather than the tongue. A fine choice I suppose. Well worry not, you got me, who was blessed with unparalleled talent in all things. You can rely on my help with whatever gives you trouble"

Not mocking someone did not mean missing a perfectly fine bragging opportunity.

"I, for one, find you to be quite the enjoyable company compared to most ground-dwellers I came across"

That wasn't much of a compliment, but it was one nonetheless, for Biowl at least. Most of the people he met since coming to this country were too fond of their own mediocrity. They had no drive to push beyond their little plot of mud of the middle of nowhere. Such lack of ambition was more despicable than any social awkwardness.

"Pleasantries aside, we seem to be heading toward a rather dangerous forest. I could do some reconnaissance work from the skies but they would likely spot me first. Those monsters appears to have settled extensively too. Any preference ? I'm rather fond of ... let's say the not full frontal approach"

"I-I'd also like to avoid fighting them, w-were it possible..." Tekni shudders with a fearful expression at the thought of a confrontation.

"Perhaps some local sources would g-give us insight into their, um, patterns?" She offered with a hesitantly hopeful tone. "Lumberers who would have spotted them...? Scholars familiar with their characteristics...? Soldiers with experience defeating them...?"

Chapter One - The Smallest Light
"That's not such a bad plan. If we get lucky we will find somebody in those wild areas. Though considering what that... charming lady said, I wouldn't get my hopes up. Not many seem to venture away from their dirt-hole around here.
It's still worth checking it out"

The giant birdman started looking around, hoping to find something or someone that would fit that description. A lumberjack perhaps. Or a shack near the woods.

Chapter One - The Smallest Light
The search didn't take too long, as on the outskirts of town was a shack with no less than two lumberjacks at work sawing away at a large tree stump. They had a good rhythm between them, working the two-man saw. Both had smiles on their faces, despite the hard work.

The shack itself had a sign out front:

A. Bumpkin
B. Bumpkin

Chapter One - The Smallest Light
Bumpkin and Bumpkin ... ? Were those things supposed to be names ? How dreadful it must be to be born under such a ridiculous alias ! Biowl could only shudder at the thought. Yet his companion's words brought him back.

"Y yeah! Let's ! They might have some... "

Knowledge was probably too strong a word to use for someone called Bumpkin of all things.

"... familiary with the area. I will take the lead if you don't mind."

Obviously such a social task fell on his shoulders as the defacto charismatic face of the group. Or so he liked to think. Putting up his usual polite persona, he waved to the two lumberjack as he walked toward them.

"Brave sirs ! Apologies for interrupting your work. My name is Biowl and these are my companions. We are travelers seeking directions and could use your wisdom! May we have a moment of your time ? "

Chapter One - The Smallest Light
The pair looked over to the newcomers, stopped their sawing, and one of them spoke. They appeared to be identical twins, up close. Both are all smiles.

"Well what do we have here? A couple outsiders come to our humble shack, of all places! Hello there, friends! My brother and I spend a lotta time out in these here woods, so you ask away and we'll do our best to help ya out! Can we offer ya some coffee?"

Chapter One - The Smallest Light
"Thank you for your time, kind sir"

Speaking in such exagerated way was likely too much. But there was no harm done in flattering the ego of peasants. Make them feel important and they become that much more talkative.

"My name is Biowl, you can see me as a bodyguard. The noble lady behind me is Tekni and the quiet lad is Loem. We are travelers looking for ruins in the forest. We heard of monsters lurking in these woods and hoped experts such as you could give us some informations. We are very much looking to avoid danger as much as possible."
