Re: Episode One: The Severed Garden
"I recommend belly rubs. And a heat lamp. They love those," Akagi replied deadpan.

Then, as the runner fetched her more meds, she said, "Truth is, they are coldly logical, predatory and somewhat ruthless.  But they do understand the concepts of honor and mercy.  In their society, the strong rule and survive.  The weak serve, or perish."

She raised a finger as if counting. "So, you don't want to come off as weak." She raised a second finger. "But if you challenge them, you have to be prepared to back it up.  It's a fine line to walk.  As a doctor, I've learned to navigate their world as a healer and assistant.  At least, I did... a century ago."

"I'm sure they haven't changed much..."

In reply to Akira Akagi (msg # 98):

D'rala nods thoughtfully. "I appreciate the insight, doctor." After a moment, she continues, humor entering her voice, "I'll try not to appear weak nor instigate any honor-duels."

Re: Episode One: The Severed Garden
Krilleks neck flared in tension as he kept his argument to himself, difficult as that might be.

Personal Experiences are, by their very definition, anecdotal and can neither support or refute what is established by proven research. Personal experience is only to be relied upon when there's no other information available to go on.

The Senior Officers did not ask for his thoughts on the matter, and so he remained quiet.

Re: Episode One: The Severed Garden
Dr. Akagi smirked in genuine amusement.  She loved that someone in this century - besides Nixor - had a sense of humor.  She was used to people with sticks up their butts.

Maybe D'rala was all right.

"If in doubt, just fall back on a belly rub.  Or a heat lamp," she smiled. "But whatever you do - no handbag jokes."

Then, sobering, she asked, "Is Nixor coming?"

"I'll keep it in mind," D'rala says with a smile and an incline of the head.

"The landing party is you, Lt. Krillek, Commander S'rela, and myself," she replies, gesturing to the others as she names them. "We should be launching shortly, but if there's a reason you think he'd be valuable, I'd take it under advisement."

"Besides being a good scientist and mechanic, he's a Ferengi.  Negotiation is what he does before breakfast. I'd feel better if he was along," Akagi replied.

In reply to Akira Akagi (msg # 103):

"I see." D'rala nods slowly. "I would hope there's not going to be any negotiation to be done, considering our objective, but I take your point." She's not sure whether taking an engineer down is necessary, but the comfort of the doctor certainly is. She wants Doctor Akagi comfortable and calm in case of any potential crises. "I'll check in with the Captain, and we'll see what we can do." Graves would steer her right, she was sure. D'rala could count the number of people she trusts fully on one hand, but the Captain was on the list.

She takes a few steps aside and presses on her communicator badge. "Vex to Captain Graves. Sir, we're preparing to launch, and Doctor Akagi has requested engineer Nixor's presence. She believes that both his scientific expertise and his interpersonal negotiation talents could serve us. I'm not sure he's a necessity, but at the least, I think his presence would go a long way to put the doctor at ease. Would you approve him if I requested him?"

Re: Episode One: The Severed Garden
Graves received Díralaís message and considered for a minute. He didnít really want to send all of his senior officers off ship, but he didnít really need Nixor at the moment. He hit the comm to respond. ĒThis is your command, number one. If you think you need Nixor to accomplish your mission, heís yours. But if you donít need him, donít take him.Ē

That probably didnít help Vex too much, but she needed to spread her own command wings. He had to force her to make a call.

In reply to Quinn Graves (msg # 105):

"Understood, captain," D'rala replies over her communicator. She takes a moment to consider the situation, but ultimately returns to the captain's words: 'if you don't need him, don't take him.' She returns to stand by Akagi.

"Doctor, while I genuinely appreciate your input, I think it could be a dangerous mistake to remove all our officers from the Yellowknife. I know you and Nixor have history, and I'd like you to feel comfortable during your first away mission aboard this crew, but perhaps you could rely on me for that. I realize you don't know me very well yet, but I can assure you that I will have your back down there."

Re: Episode One: The Severed Garden
Dr. Akagi just shrugged apathetically.  "Sure. It's not like he's my boyfriend or something.  Hopefully we won't need him."

She didn't seem inclined to elaborate further.  It was hard to tell if D'rala's reassurance was effective or not.

"Very well, then.  Shall we go?" S'rela asks settling into the tactical station, such as it was, on the shuttle.

I believe someone else was piloting, but if S'rela is, let me know and I will edit.

"Yes, let's get a move on," D'rala replies with a nod, and heads back up the gangplank. Sending a message to Captain Graves that they are about to disembark, she waits for everyone to come aboard before settling in.

Dr. Akagi climbed in the shuttle, stowed her gear, and sat down.

"Don't people in this century wear seatbelts?" she mused, noticing the lack of shoulder straps.

"Try not to fly us into anything, then," she grumbled.

Nixor whistled aimlessly to himself as he headed back to Engineering.
He had a few more tasks to deal with this shift, before logging off for an 'evening' in the den, card-sharping a few of the younger crew members into doing his chores for him over the next week.

"I'm sure Mr. Krillek will fly straight," D'rala says with a smile to the doctor.

When the entire away team is aboard the shuttle, she hits the button to close the gangplank doors.

"I know we haven't worked together long," she begins, feeling she should say something to them as they set off together for the first time, "but I have confidence that we'll be able to get this done, and handle any potential complications. You're all experienced and competent and don't need me to tell you how to do your jobs, so if you think anything's off when we're down there, or you don't like the way things are going, let me know. We won't be able to maintain contact with the Yellowknife, so we'll only have each other to rely on."

Dr. Akagi eyed D'rala with grudging respect, as if she didn't really want to like her, but was starting to respect her.  And nodded.  "You got it," she said. There was nothing glib about her tone.

Quinn Graves:
Graves nods to Sírela, giving her permission to leave.

He makes sure the officer at the science station has the sensor data. ĒWeíve got a few hours at least to plan our next course of action, Iíd say. Might as well make good use of the time the away team is on planet. Letís see if we can identity where that Cardassian ship went.Ē

Graves looks over the shoulder of the junior science officer. "Have you been able to find anything?"

The shuttle eased out slowly as Krillek cautiously made his way out. Confidence came quickly as he navigated his way along.

"Identical to the simulator..." He said to himself.

"Doctor, please" Krillek said, his attention still on his task "You of all people should know the chances of us being crushed to death in the event of a collision is statistically insignificant."

"We are far more likely to be sucked into the empty vacuum of space as the shuttle looses pressure."

"I don't think the volume of air in this shuttle is sufficient to push us all out into space in the case of breach, Mr. Krillek," S'rela says absently monitoring her console, though there is a hint of a smile in the corner of her mouth.
