1.1 A Cycle Begins
Sumta roused himself from the lethargic nap he'd been taking to wallow in the after-effects of the peshs. "Lords of the Pit, numerology? I've never heard of a more miserable sort of magic," he said, with enough presence of mind to not say that too loudly in any place run by Nethys. He couldn't do much magic, even if it was innate to him. "Well, we've got something at least. Either we have a laugh about this in three days, or we get some more time to figure it out."

1.1 A Cycle Begins
After having done research both in books and in the streets, the group reconvenes at the tavern that evening. Morgan, having been through on the first time of this, finds the people present and the conversations eerily familiar once again. For the rest, it's just a normal Katapesh tavern, air thick with scents of food and drink and pesh, laughter and burbling speech in a plethora of languages filling the air of the taproom.

1.1 A Cycle Begins
Morgan is at home in the atmosphere of the tavern, and though her arrival is slightly ahead of the others it takes her a moment to dissuade people vying for the courtesan's attention. When she finally joins them she leads then to an out of the way table, gives them a smile, and begins.

"I have a few leads. Some riskier than others. The least promising is a doomsayer with familiar sounding ramblings. The next is a rumor of a town that phases in and out of time, trapping and rapidly aging people that try to enter. The one I pursued more in depth was the rumor of depictions of arcane clocks being found in nearby ruins. That seems like it could be relevant, bears less possibility of killing us, and at the minimum we might gain knowledge of time magic and some loot. I tracked down the guide that found those and arranged a trip to them tommorow. Have you found anything?"

When Morgan led everyone to the table she had set aside, Abasi took care to adjust his chair so that his back was to a wall and he could observe as many of the other occupants of the tavern as possible before speaking "The town you heard about, it wouldn't happen to be El-Fatar, would it? That one mentioned it, something about numerology and planar gates," he said, pointing with his thumb to Marili. If not, I wouldn't mind looking for these clocks you mentioned."

Zoning out as she'd attempt to see if there was anything useful she could listen to and then use should the time loop prove to be a thing, Marili looks a touch startled as she digs for notes at Abasi's mentioning.

"Ah! Yes! Yes, yes there were a few different references to a place named El-Fatar, some things were conflicted, but...where did I write it? Here - El-Fatar was big on numerology and stellar movements, which isn't strange in and of itself, but the book with that information was referenced under 'time manipulation' and that's, well, strange. A Nethysian library does not misreference its books."

She flicks through a couple more pages.

"Uh, nothing about clocks, arcane or otherwise, but if El-Fatar was as obsessed with numbers and stars at it seems they were then the must have made something clock-like. It wouldn't make sense to build your town around numbers and number patterns and not have clocks of some kind - what would be the point?"

"Actually El-Fatar is the ruins. The town is something else. So it seems all of our leads and instincts led us to the same place."

Sumta looked incredulous- or at least, he did once he finished placing an order for a large meal. "Arcane clocks? Just because something happened with time, doesn't meanů Look, as far as I'm concerned, all that's happened is I've been generously given three extra days of life. I'm not going to waste that chasing some wizard's night-use sundial." He leaned forward, making a rare conscious display of his intimidating bulk. "Tell you what. You're welcome to hire me on to help keep you safe. If you're right, you'll get a full refund in two and a half days. And if not, the problem is solved anyway, and I'm compensated even if there's nothing of value there."

"Listen the leads steering to the ruins makes perfect sense. The guide I talked to had never been that far down, and this isn't a common knowledge thing about them. Is it really likely just coincidence that we get pulled backwards in time shortly after people go deeper than normal into these ruins and find carvings about time? They could have released something, like the strange man for example. End of the world or not, something powerful decided to cause us to go back in time and I don't think some entity would just throw people back in time for absolutely no reason." Morgan raps the table with a nail, "Do any of you actually want to do something about being attacked with magical phenomenon and maybe see if the world is in danger? Nobody's going to drop hard proof of the situation in our laps and I'm not paying any of you to look for it any more than I'm just going to sit around letting time mages screw with me or the world to end. I'm getting to the bottom of this and then getting back to my life. Anyone else?"

Silas ponders Morgan's words for a few moments before grinning widely and saying, "Ah what the hell. Little vacation off to a cute backwater town with some new friends? Sounds bracing. I'm in. My calendar is quite clear the next few days anyways, I should know, I already lived them! No reason to do it again!"

Issynia frowns at Sumta's claim. "Are you saying that, if this time reset were to occur again, you would consider yourself to no longer be owed a fee? Why would that be? You still carried out the agreed-upon service, did you not?"

She rubs her head; these matters were taxing. "I'll come, and I'd certainly prefer more trained fighters along," she nods to the gladiator. "This is not a safe journey. I would usually guide my clients around an area like El-Fatar, not into it. I presume that everyone has a mount, at least?"

Abasi watched the back and forth with amusement, only to lean forward as Morgan addressed the group as a whole. "You don't have to convince me to join you. At this point, everything is falling together so well that it must be that we are either truly trapped in a looped span of time, or as I still  suspect, this is a masterful illusion. Regardless,  the only way out I see is through."
at Issynia's question, he patted the heavy tome at his side before answering. "I can have a mount whenever it is needed."

Notes reorganized and a few extra hastily scribbled on in her scribe shorthand so that loop or not, they had all the relevant information they currently had. Hurriedly packing them all together Marili looks about at the others and pats at a small coinpurse.

"I, well, no. I thought I'd need to hire one at best. I have the gold to do so..." She trails off and begins hypothesizing regarding money and their potential loop.

The warrior woman nods. "My last charges were happy with their camels, they said; I can arrange in the morning to hire from the same corral if you would like. And for anyone else who needs one?" She looks around, prepared to take a head count.

"Camels?" Silas asks, seeming a little affronted. "Vile beasts, they won't do at all! They spit and they absolutely reek. Why don't we simply take my carriage? The road to El-Fatar is mostly flat and easy terrain, and it would be far more comfortable. Only four seats in the back, unfortunately, but another beside my driver up front, and if any of you are comfortable on a horse, it should serve us well."

Issynia smiles, shaking her head. "That's a common misconception, for people who don't know how to treat their camels properly. And the smell comes from not having adequate water to bathe. I assure you that camel musk is less objectionable than horse when they are properly groomed."

She nods at his offer; the man showed his good-natured generosity again. "That should handle transport then, thank you. Amarra and I will outride; we will be faster than the carriage by a considerable margin."

Sumta chuckled. "It's simple. Two reasons. One, you're paying for my time. If I get my time back and you get your money back, that's all well and good. Two, I don't really buy this whole 'cycle' thing, but I'm not ruling it out. If it's true, then sure, I'm curious to know what's going on. If it's a fluke, then I get some money." His smile grew a little harder. "Or, put another way- if you don't believe in this enough to give me money that you claim the universe will return to you in a couple days, why in Lamashtu's bountiful tits am I going to believe in it enough to go risk my neck in some ruins?"

"So you're saying you can't save the world in two days? And that you have to be paid to deal with what might be a mage attacking you or a magical phenomenon that could seal you in a time loop?" Morgan shrugs, "It may be foolish of me to aim to find and fix this situation in two more days, but if you don't have that much ambition or faith in your abilities and value your dignity so little I'm not going to pay you to constantly yap skepticism at the risk of everything. How about you be skeptical in the constructive ways? We were sent back in time and there's some claim the world is going to end. Sure there's only proof we were sent back in time. No proof the world will end. Also no proof we'll be sent back again if the world ends again. Yet you yap yap yap again and again that you are  smart and we're naive to not doubt parts of our situation and have done nothing but disparage our attempts to find the proof we need as foolhardy. I can find a guard that won't yap constantly that he's better than me simply because he won't risk death in ruins people explore regularly to make sure a mage doesn't screw with him again or the world doesn't end with him in it."

Sumta looked like he was about to speak, and paused. "Hmm. You know, I had not really taken the world ending part of things seriously. But, I didn't take the time thing seriously either. You make a good point." He nodded, looking satisfied. "I will not be accompanying you, unless the pay is frankly absurd. If the world is possibly ending, I should be spending my time offering sacrifices while I still can. If I see you again this morning, then we can discuss other options." He was already tallying up how many head of cattle he could afford. The logistics would be difficult, but he did know some more of the faithful who could probably be involved.

As Silas offered the use of his carriage, Abasi nodded in his direction. "That is very generous of you, my thanks."
With that said, he returned his attention to the argument between Sumta and Morgan, noting how the gnoll seemed to have made up his mind. With a shrug, he spoke up, his tone dismissive. "If you wish to shy away from the possibility of learning whether or not what you have experienced was real because you fear for your life in a ruin already well explored, then who am I to say it is a great loss? I would not want a coward watching my back."

Sumta laughed. "Ha ha ha! People are always calling gnolls cowards for things! It's usually because they won't do something stupid. As usual, you've got it backwards. It's not because I'm afraid of dying; it's because I think we might all die anyway. The end of the world! I have many doubts, but I've never heard the claim made my somebody with so much power. How many souls are there in Katapesh alone? The world!" The gnoll gestured grandly. "Do you think it will matter to your gods if you understand what is happening? Will they notice you in the midden heap of souls and pick you out because you thought you'd find something in a picked-over ruin? I will take my chances with a day of sacrifices. And, if the world doesn't end, then why should any of us care?"

"You insult my faith in my god's rites earlier and insult me for not going after whoever did this; then when you find out you might have been attacked you run and hide behind yours and refuse to go after whatever did this." Morgan is visibly growing more and more annoyed, "And again, you keep braying that you're so much smarter than us. Yes, your god will certainly notice you and save you in this possible crisis if you stab a bunch of animals you bought in the market and our gods will ignore us if we stand up and go after the source of this thing that might be a threat to their holdings in this world. Abasi is completely right and all you just did was argue he's right. Now if your time is so vital, stop wasting ours and go stab goats. I have my sacrifice to prepare, and that's whatever did this."

She turns to the group, "Alright, now that we don't have to accommodate the traveling expenses required for this one's fighting style of goat killing at threats, is there anything else? Should I go pay a mercenary to help us investigate this?"

Following along as best she can to the myriad of conversations while hurriedly throwing together numerous shorthand notes and small additions to her current collection of notes, Marili only really paying proper attention once it becomes clear that Sumta and Morgan were arguing over faith and money, confused and irritated over what she's gleaned from context.

"If you can buy favor from your god so easily then why haven't you done so already?" She doesn't mean to provoke, but couldn't help but feel that Sumta's plan was one of desperation at best. Not that she could fault it with how little information they had, but to her own reasoning it would take a lot more gold than any of them - all of them? - had to purchase the required amount of sacrifices needed to catch a deities' attention.

If it didn't, then could you even call such a being a deity?

Shuffling under her many papers she carefully extracts a small pouch of gold and looks up to Morgan. "We should probably hire someone. Guide, guard, something like that. Hmm, I wonder?..." And with an additional shuffle out comes a small, personal booklet, and following some shifting and a mental patdown, Marili writes something down quickly before the booklet vanishes back into her person.

""If Sumta believes that his god would want him to spend this time in worship, I don't see how that can be called cowardice," Issynia offers.
Making eye contact with the gnoll, she asks, "Where do you expect you will be, when evening falls tomorrow and the next day? If and when we return, I would like to visit you with any news from our journey."

Abasi laughed briefly at Sumta's question. It is a humorless thing, his laugh, full of spite and contempt. "Bold of you to assume their gods or your own will care about anything we do. If the world truly is ending, it would seem to me that the gods do not care at all. Even if the gods are watching, I don't give a damn what they think. I'm willing to go on this little outing to get answers, and if it's true that we're trapped in time, to find a way out. Feel free to slaughter helpless little goats in the name of a being who probably isn't listening for their screams if you please, I choose to be proactive."

At Issynia's statement, he turned his head to her, locking his pitch black gaze on her before shrugging. "In my experience, if a man refuses to enter a place and cites the danger as his reason, he is either afraid or he wishes to send you in first so he may follow at a distance. If he feels the need to try and garner his god's attention with a bit of animal killing, it tells me he fears the end that may or may not be coming, and believes he can do nothing to prevent it. What is that if not cowardice?"

"I call it faithfulness," Issynia replies simply. "Cowardice is when fear causes you to shirk your obligations. If you meet them in spite of your fear, that is bravery. I cannot be brave, as I feel no fear."

She lists these points off her fingers as though reciting a lesson. "When you shirk your duty or ignore wisdom in order to prove yourself or conquer fear, that is vainglory - caring more about yourself or your image than what matters. And when you choose to follow the path set before you, whether it aligns with your feelings or not, that is faithfulness. It may not lead to glory or any reward, and it may be mistaken for cowardice or laziness or even heartlessness, depending on what others insist you ought to do. That may, in fact, be what this is."

She gives a brief nod to the gnoll. "But only Sumta himself can know his obligations to us, to his friends, to the gods. I will always choose to believe that someone acts with virtue rather than vice, if either seems plausible."
