Interlude: The Misadventures of a Moth

Free of the constraints of Yuna's room inside the Alabaster Seat, Ohm has the run of Jianta to explore and do whatever she wants. Indeed, the first thing she does is...

Interlude: The Misadventures of a Moth

Moth-Ohm quickly darts out of the window, perhaps a little too quickly and precisely... though that could have just been a trick of the wind. Once free of the tower, she folds her wings and dives, plummeting downwards. Her wings unfurl as she approaches the mountainside, catching the air and guiding her along the rocky contours. She carries the speed into forward momentum, her tiny body shooting across the rooftops of the mountaintop city, though she does end up having to flap her way across the latter half. Once she crosses the walls, the little moth again begins to dive downwards, flying across the countryside at a truly impressive pace for a moth, heading for the harbour-city below.

A bit less than an hour later, and the silvery-white spec crosses the threshold of the city's walls. She continues to fly overtop, the antenna atop her head twitching to sniff out the potent pang of alcohol that would mark an alehouse, patrons gathered to mark the setting sun and the end of a day's work — as well as the approach of Calibration.

Following that scent, Ohm banks towards the harbour propper, alighting upon the roof of a building which overlooks a small square. At its center, a large cube sits in a larger rectangle, what might have once been a fountain but is now a rather severe-looking art installation.

Interlude: The Misadventures of a Moth

Jianta Harbor is still bustling with activity, even this late into the day and with winter so close. From Ohm's journey, she notices that the city offshoot is mostly warehouses and businesses related to maintaining the docks working. She does find the scent of several alehouses, but after perching on a square in front of one for a few minutes and observing it, the clientele is decidedly not what she expected. Rather than sailors and other riffraff in a seedy, ill-maintained building, the alehouse seems to be a respectable business, with the people inside more the likes of officers, captains, and members of the city administration.

Ohm also noticed that, like in Jianta proper, several gates lead to an underground portion of the city, and her refined senses also notice trails of alcohol -- some recent -- coming from some of these gates. Perhaps the kind of seedier establishment she is looking for can be found underground instead?

Interlude: The Misadventures of a Moth

Ohm detaches herself from the rooftop, plummeting several feet towards the ground before catching the wind and setting off once more. The white-furred moth slips through one of the open gates and follows it down, into the tunnels beneath the city, pursuing the scent of rancid alcohol.

Interlude: The Misadventures of a Moth

Ohm quickly realizes that the tunnels beneath the city are a city unto themselves, with entire buildings and streets built entirely underground. She passes through several stalls of people selling things, and sees that there is a very large movement of people doing business and walking around. Lighting in the tunnels is mostly maintained by flickering torches and lanterns set into the walls and ceiling, and the overall sense of the place is closer to the seedier environment she was looking for at the start. It's not difficult to find an alehouse by following the smells, and this time the patrons -- and the surrounding environment -- are exactly what Ohm expected to find.

Interlude: The Misadventures of a Moth

Once more Ohm lands, this time her tiny insect legs attaching her vertically to a nearby wall. From her new perch, she watches the entrance of the rancid-smelling establishment, waiting for one of the establishment's patrons to stumble — or be thrown — out, and to wander down one of the darker, less-used tunnels that pockmark this warren of a city.

Interlude: The Misadventures of a Moth

It doesn't take long for a man to step out of the alehouse, steps almost faltering due to drink. The man wears ratty, stained clothes, but a hatchet hanging from his rope-belt, together with a fit physique, betrays that the man is either a sailor for a seedy pirate (or pirate-adjacent) crew or at least some kind of brute enforcer. He shakes his head, as if trying to clear it from drink, then steps away with a sense of purpose, starting down the underground tunnels. Spying a good mark, Ohm follows after him, just another moth in the wall.

It doesn't take long for the man to turn into less-traveled tunnels. As soon as they are out of the main thoroughfares, the man simply takes a torch from the wall; after a few moments the reason becomes obvious, as gradually the wall sconces that should hold lanterns and torches grow emptier and emptier, until eventually the only illumination comes from the man himself. He moves deeper and deeper into the tunnels, which still have abandoned stalls or buildings set into the side rocks, sometimes with mound of people -- or bodies -- seen through the flickering light.
