Assimilated? Not exactly. He's from the Extents and has spent most of his time there, but he has also spent a few years in Imperial space and has a reasonable grasp of how things work there.

Gvoudzon:
In reply to Frederick Vicouna (msg # 332):

The joke is Anglic is still a foreign language to Gvoudzon (as his use of set phrases show), so when he heard Danila say
Danila:
- Well, if you must... You can consider mister Alyx, here, as your savior, it was his idea to follow your pursuers. And Datman, - Danila nodded at Andrew, - is our "pack leader".

he assumed "Datman" was Copeland's last name, like Alyx is "Mister Alyx"'s last name ;)
and Copeland didn't correct him so far...
This is the kind of cultural blunders that happens when you don't know for example that in East Asia the naming order is : "last name, first name" ;)
Now that he hears "captain Copeland", he may assume that it's a privileged denomination used by his crew only... but should he consider himself already as part of his crew, of would this be premature and thinking he's the Aslan's whiskers?

All that hints that Gvoudzon is from outside the Imperium >like Khuevaengh<, and is culturally very different from assimilated Vargr like Khuevaengh :)

I love it! I didn't catch it at the time in the scene, but I love the character flavor of the language barrier. Good stuff.

Khuevaengh had produced the stunner as a precaution against whomever had done the ransacking ...but apparently Gvoudzon had taken it as a precaution against him.

I was quite certain Khue would not welcome Gvoudzon's intrusion into his personal body space, nor the poking finger, and would have had the reflex to bring his stunner closer, and sink it into his intruder's belly.. ;)

quote:
at least the patient was more cooperative this way...

ROFL! ;D The game is really at its best when all participants try their best at tongue-in-cheek writing ;) unlike my yesterday's tabletop game where one players was doing salacious jokes and interrupting the GM who was trying to create an atmosphere... :/

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

In reply to Nerull (msg # 341):

you know, I play on two others games on rpol, sometimes for years, and with those groups we tried the private messages between GMs and players; we tried to make the private messages public with the "spoil" format... All our experiments led to the same conclusion :

MAKE IT PUBLIC.

- it makes the thread alive, interesting, and not filled with boring "PM" :)
- we get to know our respective characters
- a message with only one recipient is a waste of writing time ;
- when a player gets a "private but interesting" information, he shares it 99% of the times. Thats's another waste of time (even more time lost if he's supposed to share the info, but forgets to do so)
EDIT : if the player shares the info "in-character", he may lose some of the info. For example, when Alyx texted his findings to Andrew, it wasn't integral (was the text message limited to 128 characters? ;)) he did not mention the bit about the ad's contact information :) If Alyx's player is afk, nobody knows that bit. :/
- it avoids many misunderstandings, and requests "where are you", "whatudoing" "why do you that" :)
- it's generally obvious if a message information is known only by a player. If needed, the other players are able to distinguish between what they know and what their characters know.

Even when the other players aren't supposed to know a very precise info (the PC involved is an expert, not the other PCs...), the rest of the message helps as status reminder and background info.

I'm not saying "the chaotic evil assassin/antipaladin PC HAS TO share his plans to backstabb everyone of you", but if the likely action is to share the info, could we skip the "I share with the team" chatter? :)

Could we also avoid the unnecessary headaches brought by those considerations ? "who did communicate with whom ? Are you aware of this? You were 5 steps behind the group, you could not have heard what X said. Who did told you? Nobody repeated it to you! Nobody knows your whereabouts because you did not specify you updated your position to the team every five minutes! You're still on the planet when everybody else is leaving with the ship because nobody stated they contacted you..."

There is absolutely no reason Alyx wouldn't share his findings. I suggest that we assume our characters share any info the GM gives us, and welcome advice/help/support in return, unless stated otherwise. :)

If I was GM materiel, I'D GIVE US ALL ADABOYS OR GIRLS as the case may be, in other words, extra xp from GM on down for work put in because I know we all have contributed to the game.   But since I'm not, I won't so there.   My CHARACTER is waiting for the Gvoudzon to wake up and for lunch time to show back up with everyone one else.   If I am not responding, I am then rereading the various posts, in order to understand them or what is going on better.

Yup, and my old eyes had trouble reading it on mobile where I have no trouble with the colors or such of the regular font. You didn't do anything wrong, just letting you know that my eyes suck!

There is contact info for Roet Bannerji, Captain of the Wolblutn

Nerull:
In reply to Danila (msg # 211):

The local starship information service lists him as Master of the Wolblutn, a far trader currently in port. Calling the Wolblutn for Bannerji produces a confirmation that he is indeed master of the ship but that he is not aboard at the moment. In an unguarded exchange, the 4th officer handling the call says Captain Bannerji has gone to see the local manager of Sternmetal Horizons, LIC.

You also find a message in the wallet:

quote:
Dear Mr. Smith,
Your vacation reservations have been confirmed and your itinerary includes Pysadi, Zila, Carsten, Pavanne, Nasemin, Jesedipere and then the Vargr Extents to beautiful Scangen. Your return journey will be back through Jesedipere to Junidy.

Your cousin on Aramanx has asked that you depart from your itinerary and pick up the additional luggage he referred to in his last letter. He also says that he hopes you will prolong your stay there for several weeks and then travel to – Junidy by way of Nasemin.

Enjoy your vacation!

Which tense should we use ?

Now that we seem to have reached a compromise on the share of our character's info and actions, may I suggest we agree on the tense we use when we describe what they do? :)

I've seen so far the use of :
- present tense : "Danila accepts the invitation"
- past tense : "Khuevaengh had one very pertinent question"
- future tense : "Nice catch there" Andrew will comment on Danila's discovery"
... on the same page..

The present tense is dynamic and active. Bing, bang, immediate action. This focuses on the game aspect of roleplaying

Using the past tense seems to me like trying to write a work of literature. While I enjoy very much reading your nicely chiseled sentences here :) I have the feeling play-by-forum is not the most adequate medium to produce novel-quality literature. Also, the distance created by the past tense make the characters seem less alive and not actually "be free to act". As if they already lived the adventure a long time ago, - when they are in fact creating it right at the moment of posting. With the past tense, the character's future is already written, their actions constrained by destiny. The focus is on the story aspect of RPG

The use of the future tense makes the texts uncomfortable for me to read, because I feel the player is always calling for the validation of the GM, or checking if nothing the other players state would prevent his character's action, like in a wargame play "The armor unit will cross the river" - "No, the river is to deep and wide".
If you say your character will do something, what you mean is your character just does it. :) Again, with our average pace of posting, and the GM's reply frequence (which is fine, don't get me wrong :) It would be unreadable if any other post was the GM "yes the PC does it"), this style does not seem adapted to play-by-forum.

In my rpol games in French, we use the present tense, as we'd do at a physical table game. So this tense seems natural to me and has my preference. :)

What do you think ? Which tense are you most comfortable with? Would you feel embarrased if a majority of players recommended a specific tense use? :)

In reply to Gvoudzon (msg # 353):

I think each tense has its use, and precisely in the cases you described. Sometimes my character just acts, so I use present simple. Sometimes I describe a prolonged action, then various past tenses fit perfectly. Sometimes I'm not sure if the action is possible and/or requires cooperation from the other players, then future tense fits well. I would not limit us to a single tense and would use all the flavors.

As for me, I get confused as when to use the various tenses but that being said, I personally like the present tense because than I can use the word I, in my action,

I'm good with any standard or not having a standard. Clear writing is what's important and if people write more clearly in their preferred style, then I'm good with a mix. I don't find it jarring at all.

On an unrelated note, have we lost Carver? I haven't seen a post from him in a bit.
