Off the (adventure) path

I figured we were on a pretty flexible track already.  I'm fine with it being a bit more ad hoc as we go along.  It still is good to have a reason to be traveling though.

I'm thinking of turning this into more of a sandbox and less of an adventure path if anyone is interested. Loosely follow the AP until we don't no more.

Sandbox is perfectly fine for me!

Re: OOC Chatter!

I don't have much visibility towards a sandbox, but I'd like the adventure to progress faster, since we've been waiting for what seems to be ages, for the mysterious shadows around the museum to move into action ! :)

This is a great adventure.  I think it is somewhat set up to sandbox a bit as the characters move along with events.

Re: OOC Chatter!

In reply to Nerull (msg # 490):

This is a cut and paste to remind you to pay your air tax or get arrested!

Air Tax: Because the environment within the city of Leedor is entirely self-contained and replenished through the municipal air plant, the city has adopted an air tax to defray the costs involved. All individuals entering the city (through the starport, any one of the bases, the shipyard or through the mine tunnels) are called upon to pay a basic air tax of Cr. 10 per day expected to be spent within the city.

The collection booths will issue a bracelet that indicates payment of the tax and the expiration date. Bracelets are chemically coded to turn yellow 48 hours prior to expiration and orange 24 hours prior to expiration. They turn red when the tax payment period has ended.

It is considered severely ungracious to utilise the air and facilities of the city without paying a fair share of the costs. To avoid embarrassment, locals generally renew their air tax bracelets before they turn orange (they receive credit for the unused portion when it is turned in).

The local enforcers will tend to stop individuals with yellow or orange bracelets and warn them that their air tax will expire shortly; they automatically stop anyone with a red bracelet and arrest the individual on a charge of tax evasion. If a bracelet is yellow, roll 2d6 for the player concerned. On a 6 or less, he will be arrested by the Leedor police. Impose a DM of –4 if the bracelet is orange and –6 if it is red. Local citizens will be apt to refuse services to anyone wearing a red bracelet. The city keeps computer records of air tax payments and anyone (especially a visitor) whose tax payment is delinquent for more than a month will likely be visited by police. When leaving Leedor, bracelets may be turned in to a checkpoint attendant for credit on unused days remaining.

The air tax is not charged for individuals who remain in the starport or who transfer directly to the naval base, the scout base or the shipyard.

"We should change places after the fight *yawn*, like an abandoned mining corridor. Also we should pay the Air Tax in advance, so not to be halted by the police because our bracelets turned red. Cr. 10 per day and per person, this gets expensive fast. Hey, Alyx, miracle man *hiccup* could you find a way to hack our Air account on the city system?"

Surveilance gear

There's not much in the way of surveilance gear in the CSC.

On P 62 we have:
Surveillance devices such as hidden microphones and tiny
cameras, bugs are available from TL5 onwards. They rapidly
miniaturise and become more intelligent. A TL14 bug can be
no bigger than a dust mote. The smaller a bug, though, the
shorter its range – a bug that transmits data needs a much
larger power supply than one that just records until collected.
TL Features Cost
TL5 Audio only Cr50
TL7 Audio or Visual Cr100
TL9 Audio or Visual or Data Cr200
TL11 Audio/Visual/Data Cr300
TL13 Audio/Visual/Data/Bioscan Cr400
TL15 Audio/Visual/Data/Bioscan/Computer/1 Cr500
Audio: The bug records anything it hears.
Visual: The bug records anything it sees.
Data: If attached to a computer system, the bug can search
and copy data from the computer. The bug cannot breach
computer security on its own, but if a user accesses the
computer in the bug’s presence, the bug can read his data.
Bioscan: The bug has a basic biological scanner, allowing it to
sample the area for DNA traces, chemical taint and so forth.
Computer/1: The bug has an onboard computer system rated
Computer/1.
A bug can be active or passive. An active bug transmits data
(either constantly, or when triggered). Passive bugs just record
until activated.

And at a stretch on P27 there's the Tactical Video Suite for armor:
Tactical Video Suite (TL 7): Attaching several small, out of the
way video cameras and microphones to high-visibility areas
of the armour or clothing, the suite monitors and records
everything which happens to the Traveller for later viewing.
Based on a ten-hour hard drive, the basic suite stores all
information on a central component. Alternatively, these
suites can be rigged to transmit to a central intelligence hub,
allowing for real-time monitoring of the Traveller and granting
DM+1 to all Tactics (military) checks made by viewers. The
real-time monitoring version costs an extra Cr25.
Modification TL Kg Cost
Tactical Video Suite 7 2 Cr75

Unless we can apply the retrotech discounts (from the computers section) I think we're best served by several of the Audio or Video bugs and at least one of the Audio or Video or Data bugs that we can put near the museum to tap any network traffic. If we can get the retrotech discount, TL 7 bugs will cost Cr12.5 each and we can get a bunch of them, along with a couple of the tl 9 ones for cr 100 each. I'd love a handful of the higher tech bugs but they exceed the local tech level.

The armor add on implies that the components (cameras and mics and transmitter) ought to be available for cheaper than the bug packages if we don't mind them being less concealable.

Re: OOC Chatter!

In reply to Gvoudzon (msg # 492):

Missed that. Given the circumstances and the fact that the Air Tax system is likely to be the most secure around, Alyx will just pay the tax and if Guv is still broke, he'll pay Guv's too, just let me know. We can pick up renewed bands when we're doing the surveilance equipment shopping.

Which reminds me, I had considered getting the Tactical Video Suite for Alyx on the theory that he'd be used to it from using similar things on set, but decided he wouldn't have gotten that at the time he took off. He'd certainly be happy to pick up a set especially if he can pick up higher tech version that won't be noticed. With Khue's sensor expertise, he could probably make good use of it.

Will we need to pick up anything else to tie the bugs into Alyx's and Carver's gear (Alyx will probably feed to his HUD).

Re: OOC Chatter!

Well Carver will pay his air tax up in advance as well especially since you get a refund of the excess when you leave.

We may need simple adaptors and such to read the bugs.
