Welcome, everyone!

Curious, how would you guys prefer to do stat generation?

1) Random Roll (4d6 drop low)
2) Point Buy (GM tells us how many pts)
3) Standard Array

So, we've got three Noble characters, a soldier, and a Scout. While I would worry about redundancy, I think we've got enough separation in the narratives, where it matters.

We have an ideological leader, a political leader, and a military leader.

Also, you will all be at least starting in different places, and the story will determine if/when your plots converge upon one another.

Y'all decide how to do stat blocks on your own, I will put my own voice down if a consensus isn't reached.

Hey all, looking forward to gaming with you! :)

I'd originally conceived my character Miri as a Scoundrel before deciding to go with Noble (she's a rich girl from civilised space who ran away from home to be a smuggler and all kinds of fun things.)

Also I'm pretty new at the game so I'm happy to go with whichever method of stat generation you veteran types prefer.

Be happy with your Noble!  I mean, even if we both take Wealth as a talent at first level, the way we plan to use that wealth, our feats, and our goals could be very, very different!

:)

Towards the questions I asked earlier...I prefer the 4d6 drop the low random roll.  However, I know not everyone else does.  I tend to see a lot of similar attributes with point buy and array, but, at the end of the day, I just want to play and tell a story so I can make any option work for me.

Rerolling
If your scores are too low, you may scrap them a reroll all six scores. Your scores are considered too low if your total modifiers (before changes according to species) are 0 or less, or if your highest score is 13 or lower.

Wow... kind of got the opposite extreme with attributes that are almost too high for the character I had in mind! Miri is charming sure but an 18 is sort of overkill!

Maybe I should try the standard array or point buy. Otherwise we might be looking at a pretty wide variance in characters.

Re: OOC

In reply to Miri Trace (msg # 12):

The wide variance is something that the GM can handle without taking anything away from someone who is lucky.  For instance (just an example of an option I've seen used), take the person who rolls the highest and add up the total pluses from their total rolls.  Then, make sure that every other player is at least within 2 of that.  It doesn't take anything away from the player who rolled well, and let's other players make up the slack for bad rolls.

However, as mentioned, I am open to whatever  :)

Re: OOC

I do like rolling for stats but it can lead to some imbalances i.e. one person rolls amazingly while others roll just above the recommended. For instance, if one those 13s was just one higher, it would not constitute a reroll but would still be pretty lackluster at 21 points. Which does feel very heroic. Now, there are plenty ways to mitigate such things if you're up for it.

Those of you who signed up for the test of injecting Mantis DNA, we're scrapping those tests indefinitely. The Good News is we have a much better test; fighting an Army of Mantis-men!

For real though, going to a 40-44 point character makes me uncomfortable as to how I could consistently provide an appropriate challenge for y'all (especially if/when you congregate together in a group).

But, still at least slightly high powered characters is fitting for a Star Wars game, so I'll be increasing the standard point buy from 25 to 30.

You are the GM and it is your game! :-)

Normally though, the Vehicular Combat feat gives proficiency with pilot mounted weapons, and Weapon Proficiency: Heavy Weapons covers other vehicular weapons. (Page 119 in core rulebook explains what heavy weapons cover)

Anyway, not a big deal. This way makes vehicular combat more cinematic. Now our young adventurers can be truly heroic!!

That's really annoying, given that I would expect that to be mentioned somewhere in the descriptions for vehicle combat, but that's probably just me and what I've grown accustomed to (government reports and summaries that go out of their way to include redundant information in order to avoid any chance of misunderstanding).

We'll keep things as they are for this encounter, and revert to the normal rules later.

This being Call of The Force, and not Rogue Squadron, it may not even come up that often in the future anyway.

So!

I am, admittedly, flying by the seat of my pants for the moment. Since we're still at varying moments of introductions and early adventures, I can work with that.

So that this doesn't just become Not The Future (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9tgLnI0fFc), as well as to get some buy in (RPG's are a collaborative effort), send some PM's with where you would like your character to go and have them do, including if there's any special rules you anticipate dusting off (Forming your own Organization with Leadership, Requisitions from Galaxy of War, Tech Specialist, or whatever).

Also, in spirit of stirring conversation, figured I'd ask a few questions (y'all are super quiet with one another).

Favorite Alien species in the franchise

OR

Just a species you would like to see either appear in this game, or just show up more in the franchise as a whole?

Also, since this is all just fanfiction with dice rolls, I figured I'd ask the question does anyone have any interesting headcanons or "alternate versions" of the mythos that they would like to share?

I'm a method writer so I'm not interacting with my future victims.

I keed! Work has been stupidly thanks to COVID-19. Given my background I was "volunteered" to be my hospital's COVID task force leader. So I report to hospital admin and liaise with the Lothian area NHS board, amongst other things.

Did they reduce my workload to allow me to perform my additional duties? Hah! Surely you jest!

So my silence isn't because everyone else is a future Jedi ponce; it's due to overwork and exhaustion. Normally I'm quite chatty in OOC but after work I have very little left in me so I get home, throw my scrubs in the hamper, shower, and go to bed.

Wheeee!! I'm having so much fun you can't swing a dead Kowakian monkey-lizard around without hitting some fun.

As for favourite race: kind of a tie between the Zeltron and Chiss.

I'll come up with an answer for the second question later for now I must commune with my bed.

See, those just seem like humans with a different culture to me. Basically, hardly aliens. Do they live longer? Have different ways to intake nutrients or get rid of them? Or are they simply humans with a different skin tone? Honestly asking, I know very little about the different near-human species.

So, in answering my own question, and continuing a conversation, it will be of no surprise to anyone here when I saw that I like Jawa's; kind of a lot.

As a start, they are the first aliens we ever got to see in Star Wars.

Second, and perhaps more importantly, they are one of the few alien species that we see in the original trilogy actually doing anything.

Most of the aliens that are established early on, like in the Mos Eisley Cantina, Jabba's Palace, and the like, are basically talking furniture, for all intents and purposes.

a lot of what we think about Ithorians, Duros, and aliens like them are what was established by the EU.

Re: Thanks!

100%. In all of the Star Wars films, and major EU publications, the main protaganists are always humans, and any prominent aliens that might be there are always secondary characters.

Chewbacca, Jar Jar, Ewoks, Ahsoka (although she really did grow to be her own thing, eventually), Mr. I have spoken from the Mandalorian. Even in games like KOTOR, wookies, twileks and the like are all secondary characters.

On one hand I get it. A person sees a human character in space and there isn't really anything they need to explain, but if the main character is an alien there's an inherent need to explain more to the people who aren't big nerds like us. On the other hand, it's this great big galaxy full of varied and diverse life, and the heroes are not only always the same species, but the same family; what the hell man?

Another thing, along the lines of alien diversity, is a habbit among many of the writers and artists, is to create a new alien species for their gig, and which is never seen again. Would be great for them to tap some of what has already been created before to tie things together a bit better.

So, this won't affecting anything in the short term, as you're all engaged in a given plot line for a while, but I'm trying to do some longer term planning and felt this would be a decent question to ask.

Should young miss Rey make at least an appearance in the game? I wanted to keep any ties or involvement of her out of the game at least for a while, since this is about y'all, not her, but having at least a mention or casual appearance of her would be prudent.

Given that y'all knew the timeline of this game, I'm imagining y'all don't have a terrible view of the sequel movies or her character, but if I'm wrong in that regard and you think the less spoken of her the better, let me know.

I rather fancy the recent trilogy despite some errors and bad choices but I don't find any of them breaking my enjoyment. I think having Rey, Finn (likely her apprentice or soon to be), and Poe making some appearances would be rather brilliant.

I've always enjoyed the Jawa and find them fun to read and write. A Jawa Jedi or Sith would be rather humourous but, this does come from the girl had a Gungun Sith in one of her games years ago. The PCs all laughed when he first showed but stopped when he used Force Lightning on them and pulled out his crimon lightsaber. I exist to defy expectations and keep people on their toes.

Also, as a heads up for a future house rule to keep things moving along at a decent pace;

If you're making an attack roll, roll and post your damage as well if you think you're in a reasonable chance of hitting.

The alternative is rolling damage for you guys, which I think takes some of the fun away, or making replies or PMs just to tell you to roll damage, which is even worse.

This isn't a huge issue, and I don't want y'all to feel rushed at all. Of course, if you don't mind me rolling your damage for you, or if you rolled a 1 or some other poor number, than don't worry about it.

I'm starting to work on actually writing Descriptions for most of the recurring characters, solely but surely, and finding neat-o portraits, cause I think that really helps the "buy in" so to speak.

I will also fully admit that I don't have a lot of stock in my own creative aptitude, and how far I can really make this campaign last. If there's something you want to do, I'll probably say yes, because it means we get to play longer.

Re: Tadaa!

A) negative self talk and Imposter syndrome. It pervades everything I do. Starting a campaign because someone else dropped the ball, without any real plan for longevity? No way I'll be able to keep it going. That sentiment is ever present; I'm always like a week away from running out of ideas or running out of steam. Clearly, based on how long this has gone so far, it's not true, but it's still how I think.

B) In the almost decade that I've been on this site, only one game that I've been a part of actually finished; everything else self-destructed (or, a few times where I recognized I was not a good fit for what that GM was trying to do). Stand to reason players in my game would probably immediately disappear as soon as the new car smell wore off, just as they have all the other times. I also tried being a GM for a Mutants and Masterminds game a few years ago, and operated under a similar idea: each player character "hero" had their own "comic" series. Some players did leave, and I had hard burn out about two or three months later.

Imposter syndrome is really hard.

I think this game is great, and when I've been confused you've been very nice about answering my questions.  That really helps.

As for ideas, Koi creates plenty of her own drama as she tries to befriend the misfits of the galaxy one being at a time.  I can't wait to see what's on the ship under the sea. :D

Actually really excited about this, the book for the course is Revolutionary Founders, a social history book about how different people and groups in the American Revolution who had 'radical' ideas of liberty and America that are closer to our contemporary understanding than the norm of the day (while the American Revolution did change the seat of power, it didn't really change any social or economic norms)

You don't know me, you don't know what I do for a living but I can you this in all sincerity: I bloody despise racists and having that tossed in my face in regards to something that doesn't even bloody exist in the real world offends the living hell out of me.

To the original point of Arianna's, we don't talk much here, and that is a little unfortunate. Coming up on six months together, with hopefully many more to come, we should all get to know each other, at least a little.

Please do, that's what I've been doing. I'll mark that along with some other notes, as I plan to try and move forward.

So, Zen has chosen to leave the game earlier this week, on his own choice, after a conversation that was had, where he didn't feel I was providing the game that he wanted or expected. Admittedly I wasn't sure that I would be able to do that from the beginning, but he was a holdover from the original game that was abandoned, so it felt somewhat necessary to at least try.

That all being said, if what I'm doing with y'all isn't working, either as a facet or in total, please let me know, and I'll try to figure out how to do it better.

With THAT, Zen's gone, Tache still hasn't been since October, and although Jiovri has expressed desire to keep participating, hasn't really done so (still keeping her around though).

I'll be putting adverts out to try and get one or two more people involved, but I'll probably be more selective on what is or isn't allowed.

I can see where this game might not be for everyone, because it is very character driven and the story arc is long. Some of what you want to do might not be possible. I really like that though -- I like having character details and imperfections, both in my own characters and NPCs.

Kalidyn Sunrider, Scout, Embracing the Legacy of Nomi Sunrider.

So, as a brief aside, in between posts, I'm finally getting a sense of actually feeling like a proper historian.

Idle curiosity about a gentleman by the name of John Jackson, a blues musician local to my little corner of Virginia, has led me looking into newspaper articles talking about him from the 60's and 70's, and just seeing how interesting this man was.

Despite being Virginia's most famous blues musician, he was still working full time as a gravedigger because he couldn't pay the bills on his music alone.

Was going to be updating today, but on a wild fluke, I found a job opening as an Archivist for the Department of Defense's Prisoner of War / Missing in Action office, so I'm going to be making a concerted effort to put an application in for that.

Good news, I don't have class tomorrow, so I'll be able to put some time in than.

It's admittedly a shot in the dark.

They want a degree, which I don't have (working on it), but the job also requires a security clearance, which I already have, so I feel like those balance each other out.

Most recent insight is that I'll be transiting to meet the ship in Senegal around the middle of March.

So, finally in a position to communicate and update you all.

Deployment has been interesting to say the least. We did a couple of maritime interdictions, and got some major contraband that was heading to Europe.

Bad news, still being on the military network, this website is blocked on all ship computers, so my only chance to update is when we're in or near port.

Good news, we'll be spending a good couple of weeks in Port, starting fairly soon, so I can get back into this swing, at least for a while (at least, when I'm not working. Can't have my phone in my workspace)

Just having a quick check in.

Good news, I'll be back home in less than three months

Good news, on this Deployment I was selected to be advanced to Chief Petty Officer, which is a really big deal

Bad news, with the places we're likely to hit port in along the way, it's doubtful that getting real data or reliable wifi is going to be a thing.

Bad news, I'll probably be too swamped with "the season" of becoming a chief for the rest of the deployment to be thinking about this at all, even if it is accessible.

Not to the swift end I was hoping for, unfortunately.

My pinning date is two and a half weeks away, and this season is kicking my ass. Success or failure, it'll be over by the 21st.

Unfortunately, they re-blocked RPOL from the ship's network, and the next chance to leave the ship after pinning won't be until early November, so a little longer wait I'm afraid.

As before, I'll need some time to get back into the writing mode, but my day to day isn't nearly the stress it has been since July.

With that, getting a role call, seeing who all is still here, and getting a temperature check on adding more people.

Re: Tadaa!

Sorry y'all, my brain has not been engaging and focusing like it should (or how I want it to), for a while now.

I don't know what I need to do, as it's pervading into work and school as well.
Still want to give all of you a rock solid RP experience, so I feel I have to ask for some patience until I can figure out how to do that again.

Don’t worry about the game, we’ll be here. But let me know if you want to talk about the continued heavy lift you are having with work and school.  Sometimes it helps. Even when subject matters are way different.

Re: Tadaa!

Took some time, and I think I've got my head back on straight.

One I wasn't getting enough sleep. I still don't get great sleep, trying to spend time with the wife after putting Angelica to bed (which, not kidding, takes over an hour from starting to get ready to her finally falling asleep), and waking up at 430-445 to start my day at 6, but I'm at least more cognizant of what I'm doing, and so is Sandra.

Two, I was trying to do too much with the time in my day. Work + School + Wife + Toddler + This Game + Other game I started to run + writing a CHYOA + WorldAnvil = overload.

I'm not dropping any of the things I was doing before I took a time out, but at least trying to take the foot off the gas. That and planning which thing I'm working on which days should also help, rather than opening everything up at once and struggling that nothing comes out for anything.

had another busy period trying to lock down a school project. Month and a half until I'm on online only classes which should (hopefully) free up more time.

As always, thanks to yall for sticking through what is probably the slowest moving game here.

In other news, someone must have gotten word of the shenanigans we've been up to, as they've announced yesterday a new Star Wars movie with/about Rey and a New Jedi Order.

It certainly looks pretty, but not having ever watched Clone Wars or Rebels, I'm a little worried about whether I'll be able to understand at all what's going on.

Have you been watching the Mandalorian? If so, Ahsoka shows up there and that's...possibly all you might need to know? They'll probably explain other stuff along the way (hopefully with not quite as many flashbacks as Boba).

<laugh> For a second, all I could see what that scene from the Clone Wars where JarJar and Mace Windu are in a shuttle together. Mace is using the Force and says something, "I see...a city. I see...streets. I see people." And JarJar's all, "Yep, meesa see those too." haha

How long is the drow paper?  Drow have more issues than National Geographic. :)

I don’t know very much about diversity in South Africa but I think they have pretty decent legal equality?

Better than I thought it would. Aced my South Africa course and a B+ on the writing course (would have been an A had I not misunderstood two due dates).

Now into an ASL course and another on colonial america.

I'm not functioning as well as I'd like. I'm surprised that my perpetual sleep deficit isn't affecting me worse than it is. I'm sucking on caffeine most hours of the day.

The real elephant in the room is that when I do have time, even days off, this isn't something that I'm often ready or willing to engage in. Maybe it's being tired, maybe it's burnout, maybe it's guilt of wanting this game to have gotten further than it has in the 3 years I've had it going, maybe it's not knowing where to go from here.

Well I wouldn't worry about where the game is at. Maybe watch some Star Wars stuff (Bad Batch, Andor, Ahsoka) to see if that helps relax you and/or get the creative juices flowing again.

And if you need to take some time, I get it.

To be fair to yourself, you did go on a six-month military deployment. Getting back, it seems you jumped right into school, so you have had a lot going on. I think you'll find those of us who have been here since the beginning are perfectly understanding and willing to wait for you. I certainly am.

Re: Tadaa!

I appreciate that, and yes. I went from my deployment to work at NGA in less than a month, and than took on classes that january, so only two months after getting back home.

There is a lot going on, and especially on my work days, I'm hitting straight from work to cooking dinner to bedtime, to maybe an hour with the wife, to ~5 hours of sleep for the next day. I just don't have a lot of bandwidth.

That said, I also feel like I lost the plot. I've never had notes or extensive plans for any of you guys, or the ones that came and went, and though I remember the intent of each of your stories, I'm hazy on the method.

AND, doubtful on quality. I think there's a lot of 'wish I had done that better/differently' going on. Part of that is coming up with plans for players who abandon the game after two posts; losing out on good storylines and not sure what different things to do instead. I'm also not that sure in my ability to create custom baddies and encounters that are actually interesting and challenging. (a lot of the material in the books is also for things that don't actually exist anymore, which also causes an argument in my head of what's fair game to use and what isn't)

To use the metaphorical gameplay slider, I think I've always been over on the "narrative" side of things.

There's the temptation to start from scratch, but that wouldn't be fair to you all. More to point, that in of itself wouldn't solve the bigger issues.
