RNS Bail Organa

The battle of Exagol was a turning point in the war against the First Order, but also a red flag to the resistance. Victory was obtained, but not without relying on a disparate group from all corners to fight the enemy at their home. The Resistance and the Republic Navy had few ships to their name, and now was the time to fix that.

Volunteers from the Battle of Exagol were asked to sell their ships afterwards to support the cause. There were few takers, but one of the rare successes was a Consular class warship; a holdover from the Old Republic. It needed maintenance, upgrades, and a properly trained crew to operate it, but it was sturdy, and would be a great symbol in the Republic to see restored to its old glory.

So it was hoped. Here you stood, a newly inducted member aboard the renamed and rechristened Republic Navy Ship, the Bail Organa.

Laai tugged uneasily at her uniform. It was exactly her size, and that was the problem. She breathed in and out, knowing that soon she would be expected on the bridge.

It was a far cry from her old posts, any of them. The sudden memory made her claw at the uniform. She could feel the hungry eyes.

It took a moment to compose herself again. The opportunity to lose herself among the stars had been one she couldn't ignore, especially since someone had made the effort of tracking her down after she had walked away from the field hospital that day.

I'd better be about it. I came here to grasp this opportunity so let's go.

After one more tug at her clothes, she stepped out into the corridor, and tried to strut confidently, and not scamper like a terrified rodent. Damn this uniform.

Walking through the P-way, you were found quickly by your new friend and sponsor, Scrag

"Morning there Shipmate. I'll bet having a room to yourself helped get a good night's sleep, even in this old thing."

"Old means experienced right? I wouldn't count her out yet!" She hoped that her nervousness wouldn't show through in her response.

wait a sec .. damn!

"I mean..  sir!"

She tried to stand to attention. She really did. But her lekku couldn't quite get the idea.

calm down. Calm down. Too tense...
She fidgeted.

How did soldiers do this all the time? Her attention wandered, in her 'cell' anyone who had relevant knowledge were respected. The leader got there by being the toughest smartest brick of all if them, and we all knew it, but he was about the only one people got up for.  This was going to take some getting used to, and she didn't have time.

"Don't worry" He began "This isn't OCS or the Academy, not that we have one anymore. There's no drill sergeants out to bellow in your face."

He smiled as he faced you, hands at his sides, making a short visual inspection "You know how to wear the uniform right, so that will bring you good points with the crew there Cadet. Don't get so wrapped up in the formalities that you focus on what the goal is, okay? We're here to get this ship through it's paces so we can start putting warheads on foreheads."

Without waiting for a response, he motions to the side with his head and starts moving, expecting you to follow.

"I know you did good triage work in captivity, but we're moving you around a little. There's an opening for you in the Operations Department, so that's where you'll be for the time being. Best opportunity for you to become familiarized with the ships systems, with the departments, and it's crew."

Laai blinked, and then scampered after.

Once she caught up, she tried to match Scrag's easy stride while taking in the route they were walking. It was hard, the corridors were generally utilitarian and evidence of repairs would soon disappear, making it even harder to navigate.

He mentioned her posting and the expectations.  "It sounds.. complicated. With the repairs on top of the ships standard operation, it sounds like everyone will have their hands full."
She stopped briefly "Is there anyone in charge of making sure our mistakes aren't as bad as they could be, since I'm guessing we have to learn on the job."

"Well, on a surface level, everyone. All of us are expected to know the fundamentals of maintenance for the equipment in our spaces, even if we're not the ones doing the work. Specifically, look to your senior enlisted. Chief's run the Navy; don't let anyone tell you otherwise. The 3MC is in charge of the maintenance program top to bottom. You prove yourself capable of being an officer, and you'll basically just be in charge of inspecting the work of the people below you, making sure they don't gundeck it."

OOC: "Gundecking" is a Navy phrase, meaning to just go through the motions or to make it appear like work was done when it wasn't.

"Yes sir. Keep aware, and learn then."

More corridors came and went, and many more people now busying themselves over other tasks.  She tried to imagine what the Bail Organa would have looked like in her heyday.  Then she shook away the thought, she was going to get another one. How many other battleships got that chance

Coming out through the other side, the enlisted Sailors of the division were already in formation for quarters. The small group of Chiefs and Officers stood off from them, each in their own group. Scrag motioned for you to join with the officers before addressing the crew.

"Welcome to another glorious day onboard the Bail Organa. The Captain will be making rounds to congratulate us on a job well done, but I wanted to put it out there before that happens. We've got the odds against it, and you all still pushed through. Keep that energy up, because we've still got a long road ahead of us."

He turned to glance to you for a moment "Cadet Jool is joining the crew. She ran medical triage while being captive, and was a big help in our recent success. Give her the time she needs to get her caught up to speed. Other than that, nothing else to put out; keep getting the areas you're responsible for up to standards. You get that done, help someone else out. Easy day?"

"Easy Day" The crew responded

"Good. Any questions or things to put out?"

One of the human crew members raised their hands "Sir, any idea where we're headed to next?"

"I don't think even the Captain knows at this point, and if he does, he's not telling. Whatever happens next, it'll involve fighting, and it'll happen in space"

There was a mild chuckle at the dry humor.

Laai smiled, then quickly tied to hide it.  It looked like the crew were pretty much efficient, as far as she could tell, and that was high praise from Scrag.

She looked briefly to him. "Hi, I'm.. Cadet Jool. I hope I don't slow you all down too much while I'm learning. I look forward to your valuable insights and experience."

As Scrag rounded up quarters, attention was called, and the section disbanded. No sooner than that, did you feel a hand on your shoulder, pulling your attention. You see a female Duros, in clean coveralls but already grimed up on her exposed arms.

"Morning Cadet, I'm the ship's 3MC. We'll be getting to know each other a lot in the next few days. I'll make sure you get the training you need."

She spoke more quietly "Starting with learning how not to undermine yourself in front of your crew"
