Re: Ooc
I've was introduced to champions way back when.
I've also game mastered a game or two, so i'm working with the insight of a player who wants to role play a 'concept' and not be totally useless in combat, while understanding the concerns of the game masters desire to keep a character from being broken and ruining the campaign.
Player concept is a personal thing, and really shouldnt be messed with. A player should always play what makes you happy, cause we all join this campaign for the happiness that a fun campaign brings, this is a personal call that someone else shouldn't judge harshly.
What is considered 'broken' and a no-no in the campaign, is also subjective to what exactly the game master wants to deal with, or deems appropriate for his campaign. Again. Not something anyone should meddle with but the game master.
So the one place a social sharing can help with is the observation of blinding weakness you might not see yourself, or the sharing of thoughts on how the characters interact.
I'll go on the record to admit that I thought Barbie might have felt a little under powered for a 300-350 point character campaign, but i think she compares favorably to Eventide. She can't take damage the way Eventide can, but Barbie won't start feeling dizzy from using her powers after 8 seconds either (3 phases of activity for a speed five character). If Eventide is going to have a such a short duration of activity, she should consider a power limitation that states her powers can only be turned on for a short period of time to get something out of it.
My personal rule of the thumb is, that the character should be able to stand around with their powers turned on, and the Endurance use from these powers should not exceed the Recovery of the character.
The reason for this, is that a character can opt 'reduce' their speed to one, and as such, maintain a 'zero' endurance use for having their powers on when not in combat.
ie. (Not to pick on her, but because she's the only character we can all see)
Eventide has a Recovery of 6. So out of combat, when she's just loitering around, we can presume she's 'normal sized' and has her full force field in effect, or she's really large with no force field, or maybe half strength of both.
This is actually not a terrible thing, if she's not in combat i dont see her being 'huge' and out of combat you can presume her force field is not in full effect, and perhaps be at 'half strength'. If the character is 'resting' to recover end she can maintain a high speed (for reaction) out of combat, so the game mechanics support her powers at a minimal use out of combat, but ... just barely and the moment she gets into a fight her ability to stay in it is going to drop off dramatically.
A couple of possible solutions might be to reduce the power of the force field, and take End Reduction cost for the power.
Changing Mental Defense and Power Defense out of force field for 'Mental Defense' and 'Power Defense', reduce the end cost for those defenses to 'zero', making it easier to maintain the force field, and creating space in active powers to purchase reduced end for force field.
The cost structure of Growth is a little tricky, and the math makes it harder to reduce the endurance cost without losing effectiveness, so the only way to reduce the cost here is to use the power at reduced levels to manage the endurance.
Any ways... that's my thoughts on improving the performance of Eventide with minimal intrusion on the current character... oh... At level 4 growth you're at -8 dcv, so that 4 dcv, becomes a -4 DCV, you're really hard to miss. So whatever skill levels you get, you might as well focus on making it. If you martial dodge, you bring it up to dcv... 1. This is not a great martial skill for her, though Block is really groovy in that you're using OCV. Combat level or two could go a long way to make up for that OCV of 4 might be good to help this along.
A general +1 HTH combat skill is 5 points, a +1 OCV for all HTH skills is only 3 (That's a third of the cost for improving dex for the ocv). You can also consider taking +1 with martial skills, for the same cost of 3 points you limit the bonus to your martial skills, but now you can use them for OCV or DCV, which would improve that dodge, so that your dcv improves to something better than 1 when you dodge. The everyman civilian on the street has a dcv of 3, while not dodging.
I'm NOT picking on Eventide, just... trying to be constructive about some suggestions. I will have zero feelings hurt if they ignore it all and play as is. She is your character and you should be happy playing your character. Just... .don't get offended or presume i'm being mean, i'm really not.
Mac, if you want my suggestions you can ask my opinion in private, but if you do it here, you can here other players thoughts besides mine which might be good?
I'm done with Barbie, but her current format is a little involved, mostly to show how i calculated power cost and what not, to make it easy for the game master to see how i got the cost. If/when i have Eventides format to work with, i'll post her here for others to review too.
