That bit is something of a prelude because most people who enjoy the genre and even play the game have not read the book; they get their perspectives from the movies.  Some of the movies are quite good (the '70's one with Richard Chamberlin stands out) and many are fun, but they often portray the Cardinal as a would-be usurper and traitor.

Hey everyone.  Glad to be playing with you.  I'm ready for some swashbuckling adventures.

There's some great detail in that background, I'll be sure to parse all the way through it.

So are we thinking that we're Musketeers working for the government?  Or is all of that still up for grabs?

I'll start rolling up my character and building my sheet.

I sent a note to one other player who showed interest in the Seeking GM forum.  A couple of questions:

1.  How many of you own the book(s), which ones?
2.  Do you know anyone else on the site interested?
3.  Shall we advertise for more players?
4.  I'm considering either "The Man Behind the Mask" or "Monsieur LeDroit's Secret" as first adventure, any preferences?  Another one?

1) Are you talking about the rulebook for flashing Blades or the Musketeer books?  If the rulebook, yes I own the flashing blades book and maybe another of the FGU books but I can't remember which.  If the Musketeers, I own the first one but read all of them about 25 years ago, lol.
2) I don't know anyone.  I can reach out if you'd like.
3) I'm fine with the two PCs, but if you want a bit more to keep the momentum up and for more storylines, or you just like fuller games, go for it.  I personally don't like more than about 5 PCs though.
4) I'm fine with either.

Did you roll two sets of abilities?  There are a lot of dice rolls.  Also, you have 12points or skills with Literacy.  I also see an 8 on 2d6.  If that was for build it I average, not stocky.  If for height, it is also average

I rolled 6 times for attributes (the first one didn’t use the roll 4 drop one command).

Then I chose stocky and rolled height (the 8 that was average)

Then I rolled for my advantage for wealth (20)

Then I rolled for my yearly salary (6 for a rogue).

If that’s too hinky, or you want me to roll again for this stuff with descriptors, I can.

But I miscounted the skills so I’ll have to figure that out. Or if you want I can drop that wealth roll. The lack of an advantage gives me an extra skill point, so I can use that for literacy.

No problem. I adjusted the skills (Got rod of carousing and moved the free point to main gauche).

I’ve GMed a few games on the site so if you have any questions let me know and I may can help. When you get ready want to open up the Character sheets in here and make them editable you can do that by going to the GM Menu. Clicking on character sheets. Then click on make editable to the user (or something like that).  It can be hard to find at first. You can also put in a template for everyone to use for the character sheet if you want to do that to Standardize everything.

Okay, didn't know I had to do that.  I just made them editable.  I don't have a template for the character sheet, but it is easier to read if things are grouped together:  Ability scores like in DnD, Skills listed, weapons expertise with Chance to hit, etc.  I have a form fillable PDF sheet for this game, but I don't think we can use that with this site, can we?

It’s not showing up yet. Sometimes the site has problems with that. It’s always a real pain for me.  So you may need to go back to the character sheet page, then basically open each characters CS, type something in there like “this is yours to edit” then hit user editable or whatever that wording is.

I don’t think you can do a fillable pdf. What you could do is link to the url for the pdf, have everyone download, it fill it out, then upload an image in their character sheet. Then it would be consistent.

Alternatively just type it in or turn it into an html/word format using an OCR or something online. That could work.

Interesting, how do I view the character sheets?  I can only find an edit view, which means I only see the html.  I copy and pasted into my browser and could see them, but the resolution was too low to read.

Okay, that worked.  But the resolution is still poor: tiny and blurry.

In the Parry column you can put the chance to parry, the bse is the same as the chance to hit, but it uses the weapon Parry bonus.  With French style the Main Gauche has a +3 to parry, a hat, cloak baton or Buckler would have +2 and a sword or dagger is +1.

Sorry, the sword or dagger +1 is for left-handed parry.  They use their normal parry bonus when in the right hand as main weapon.

Am willing to create backstory with other characters if you can think of a way and want one with my guy.

What I am thinking of so far is, at the age of 6 until about 9 was a gleaner. A child who would search the battlefields for anything of value to survive. Once I found a wounded nobleman whom I helped to save, he in turned took me as a ward of his House. I received more training etc becoming a soldier/ loyal guard. Currently he will be 18-20 years old with some time in service as i was apprenticed etc. Thinking was officially in the service at the age of 17 so between 1-3 years of duty already.

Anyone see anything wrong with that concept for the timeframe and the game. Also if anyone can see of a connection with me which we can use to start with.

NP, I am a subaltern in a Guard unit willing to figure which works best for everyone. Got it for free with my 17 in Wit.

Advantages am taking Land, looks like I own a townhouse and a garden which pays for itself and makes me 10L a year and sellable for 2500L. It isn't great but not bad either all furniture and servants are included in the price so I or we have a small base of operations.

Thanks I changed it back now then. Got my gut done just need to get a sheet and start to fill it out. Am really looking forward to playing with everyone.
I can see lots of potential to grow this character, just need to make sure I don't overlap to much with other characters builds so that we can all shine. I will want to eventually retire and start a civilian career tree.

In the character creation thread there is a link to a form villa le PDF character sheet.  Use that, then in place of the character sheet link a readable resolution screen shot of the sheet.  You can change the image as changes are made to the sheet.  For an example of what I mean, look at the NPC I rolled up, De Soucy (should I ever get to play, my character.)

If you own the books I’ll trust you to calculate skill points, HP and encumbrance on your own.  And of course, not to read the adventures (though I will make some changes)

Well Marsuvees' character sheet is what I'm looking for, you're good.  I didn't realize you can't see each others' sheets, only the description.

In which case, I'll ask each of you to put something in the description that tells who you are: your background (Rogue, Gentlemen, Nobleman, Soldier), any titles you may have, including military rank, Social class number, the height and weight descriptors, hair and eye color, distinctive features, and anything that an acquaintance would know about you.

If you want to link in a picture from another source besides the icon you can add that as well.

You do not have to know each other yet, though I encourage linkages among you.  You will become a loose association of swashbucklers, who will hopefully become fast friends, and who knows?

We will be based in Paris, though you don't need to be Parisian.  If you don't own a house (via the Land Advantage) then you can rent a room in a townhouse (as D'Artagnan did in the book) or find some other arrangements.

Unless one of you guys had a very shady past, we probably don’t know each other. He’s probably below all of your standings In Society so your paths may not have crossed in a way that you’d remember and like each other.

 Well, Alexandre is the son of a Physician, that has a connection to a minor noble, that the father saved the life of. In gratitude, the noble wrote a letter of recommendation to a fiend of his, in the Ministry of War for an appointment within that ministry. ( goofer, errand boy,etc. But it is a foot in the door,as it where.

Luc, what rank are you by chance in the black musketeers, You start as a sergeant for free did you buy any extra. I am one rank Higher as a Subaltern the lowest rank of Officer but we could serve together in the same unit if you like. I am only 18 years old with not much experience but lots of talent and potential if you will. I was brought up from the ranks, so thinking we could of been sergeants together or at least at the same time.

didn't buy rank to start, for an advantage he rolled up filthy rich, didn't want to overplay that or exploit it outright. if luc stays with the musketeers he may see about ranking up a bit. he is still just a sergeant and kind of a known hothead. thought i'd see how it plays out for a while.

I will be updating my sheet later today. Anyone who has played this system before can give me some advice. How hard would it be for a character to get a loan in game if needed. I have spent most of my money we start with already, have a small reserve for the start say about 1/4 of my yearly income set aside. The loan would be for like 120L if it is needed  and that mainly if the game goes the route of a war  for the soldiers etc. If we go on a campaign he will want a full suit of proper armor.

[Private to Luc de Chasse: In regards we might RP it out as well if our unit goes to war. He has adequate armor for the city but in a war where constant fighting and battles  are guaranteed a full suit is needed.]

It's easy enough to get a loan from a bank; you're an officer after all. 10% is the usual interest (pg. 39).

TY, I don't mind light armor for the city etc but a real war requires one to wear a fulls et of good armor as we will be using it no matter how good we are.

the biggest difference between the Cuirassiers and the Musketeers on the battlefield was that the Musketeers were used in the same manner as Dragoons and fought dismounted. The Cuirassiers fought from horseback, often using lance and sword instead of firearms to break up formations or capture artillery, while Musketeers rode up and fought dismounted to always use their firearms. In reality, most of the time they were deployed on foot and marched with the Pikemen who would form a line between them and the enemy Cavalry. DuMont really made the musketeers seem so valiant and dangerous in a fight. They were elite shooters with good training in close combat due to how slow their weapons were to us, but they most often shot firearms in war and swung swords in town.

Looks fine, no worries.

I play on another board as well and the posting conventions are a little different.  In some of my games here I see a lot of one line posts, in some cases just a single line of spoken text with no context, tone, description or anything.  I don't like that, it reads poorly, like listening to a movie but not seeing the screen.

I hope everyone who celebrates the US Thanksgiving holiday had a nice and safe break.  If you are still with me, the trip is three nights and four days.  Please tell me who is riding where (will anyone ride with Pendu in the driver's bench?) also, there are inns along the way and it will cost 2 L per night (per person) to spend the night at such a traveler's inn.  Finally, roll against Wit as you set out in the morning, depending on where you are sitting it could be 1/2 as a general observation check.

At this point there are only three of you:  Luc, Piere and Pendu.  If the others are ghosting us then their characters can disappear as well.  Alexandre reached out to join us, and since this game owes its existence to his request, I'm fine with him finally joining us.  But he has to roll up his character and that may take a while, I will introduce him when he is ready.

[Secret to Piere de Vilfor: Being a nobleman doesn't give Piere any specific authority to give orders.  When nobles make demands it is implied that they have power to bring negative consequences upon someone who doesn't comply.  But that power comes from some authority or connection to authority.  Piere could get offended and challenge Luc to a duel, but that would cause two problems in and out of the game.  In game, it certainly defeats the purpose of your mission, to fight among yourselves over petty slights and bring unwanted attention to the Archduke's mission; out of game it constitutes PVP which I don't condone.  What is Piere's endgame here?  The Master of the Inn didn't insult him, just stated factually that they don't have what he is asking for.  Luc is trying to smooth things over to stay as discreet as possible.]
