Religion (Optional Reading)

The Gods

While there are countless beliefs that span the continent of Eos, there are only six major gods that the various people believe in. These gods, whether they are truly deities or simply beings idolized by those who don't understand them, present themselves as massive creatures.

These beasts, though they are sentient, tend to avoid civilization, preferring to roam the wilds of their world. Some of these gods are peaceful and care for those in their realm, while others are much more sinister.

Though many worship these great beasts, there are those who shun or even outright hate them. The Gallicans have spent centuries attempting to hunt and slaughter these creatures, but they have failed on countless occasions. Whether these beasts can or cannot be killed is up for debate, but the Gall's have yet to find a way to end them.

The elves do respect these creatures and those who hold them in such high regard, but they do not worship them as gods, seeing the Startouched as their own personal deities.

Religion (Optional Reading)

Amis, God of Life

Names:

Amis, The Stag

Purview:

Long ago, if the stories are to be believed, Amis created life from a spark of his own soul. That spark turned into the first microscopic organisms, then evolved over billions of years into the world known and loved today. Responsible for creation itself, and charged with maintaining the life he created, Amis is deeply connected to each and every one of the living beings on Eos.

Following:

Amis has the largest following among the gods, by far- his only opposition being followers of Deimos and the Gallicans, who choose to follow nothing. Despite his popularity, Amis is a bit of an enigma. Though he receives the most attention from the mortals, they know less about him than any of the other gods, even the reclusive Serpent. Some consider his hidden agenda and veiled past as sinister in nature, wondering why such things are kept from them, while others shrug it off as the shifty and often skittish nature of a deer god.

Location:

Though there is nature all over Eos, Amis tends to appear in the most concentrated areas, alive with flora and fauna in equal measure. In recent times, the Stag calls the Dire home, accompanied by the countless lifeforms there and his old friend, the Fox.

Allies:

Life is made beautiful through magic, appealing through knowledge and grand throughout time, making Oyer, Vihena and Aheia the allies of the Stag.

Enemies:

Life is the beginning of all things, and those who seek to end it are the enemies of Amis. Deimos is the natural enemy of the Stag, and Jormungandr is a close second.

Religion (Optional Reading)

Vihena, Goddess of Intellect

Names:

Vihena, Keeper of Knowledge

Purview:

Vihena is the second youngest deity in the pantheon, left in charge of the knowledge of gods, mortals and creatures on Eos. Many think that magic came first, before knowledge, but they would be wrong. Magic was created by the gods who imparted their own powers into one being (Oyer), utilizing the knowledge they'd gained throughout their reign, catalogued in Vihena's eternal memory.

Following:

The Keeper of Knowledge is praised mostly by scholars across the continent; however, she is also held in high regard by the Mage's Guild, the mages counting her responsible for their massive collection of arcane tomes and scrolls held within their Great Library.

Though scholars and mages are her staple, many pray to Vihena seeking knowledge and guidance in their lives, hoping for a bit of help in troubling times.

Location:

As the only winged goddess in the pantheon, Vihena is not bound to any one place on the continent. She has been spotted all over Eos, as a shadow above the clouds flying high above civilization. While she does not have any particular home, Vihena has been known to slumber deep within the mountains of the Reach, and even atop the mountains of the Vale.

Allies:

Knowledge is born of life and time, and is complimented by magic- making Amis, Oyer and Aheia her closest companions.

Enemies:

Vihena has no known enemies among the gods, though she does consider ignorance her greatest foe.

Religion (Optional Reading)

Oyer, God of Magic

Names:

Oyer, The Fox, The Trickster

Purview:

Oyer is the god of magic, and with magic comes trickery. The Fox is bound to each and every one of the Primal Sources, intricately, and has the magic of each source flowing through its veins. As a god of all things magical, the Trickster is responsible for the arcane forces of the world. Despite its responsibilities, it chose long ago not to dictate who can and who can't have magic, leaving that up to genetics. Due to its deep connection to the Primal Sources, many speculate that it would likely die if all of the sources were somehow destroyed.

Known for its magic as well as its tricks, Oyer has always been a playful god. Well, deity would be a more accurate term, since Oyer seems to be gender fluid, often changing its physical form to match its mood, rather than remaining in one body as the other gods do. These tricks and traps, often capturing unintelligent humans, can range from playful to deadly, depending on the Fox's mood.

Following:

Despite being the youngest of the gods, Oyer has one of the largest followings. Though the elves do not worship the Fox as a god, they do respect its connection to each of the Primal Sources. Mortals, on the other hand, tend to praise the Fox quite often. Deemed as the patron god of the Kingdom of Duren, Oyer is seen as the progenitor of all things magical, and is loved by the public.

While the Fox is praised by some, it is hated by others. Many blame Oyer for streaks of bad luck, or for losses in gambling.

Location:

Oyer has traveled the world several times over, but in the past few centuries the Fox has remained in the Dire, keeping Amis company.

Allies:

Magic is fueled by life and knowledge, making Amis and Vihena cherished allies.

Enemies:

While many of the gods view Oyer as a nuisance, Vihena especially, none consider Oyer a true enemy. Vihena, as the goddess of knowledge, does become irritated quickly at the Fox's tricks, but never to the point where she is angered.

Deimos, Goddess of Death

Names:

Deimos, Death, Warmonger, The Boar

Purview:

Deimos was once known simply as the goddess of death, and she was viewed as peaceful by the mortals- only taking those whose time had run out. However, in the past few millennia, she has become much more active in her dealings in Eos, and she has also been praised as the goddess of war. In the past, she was peaceful, slumbering well away from civilization in the mountains of the Reach. Unfortunately, she was awoken by some unknown force or being (several of the other gods assume it was the Serpent's doing), drawing the ire of the Boar to all of Eos.

The rampaging Goddess has been known to burn entire villages to the ground, in past centuries, due to her rage, or simply because they were in her path. If one were to find a way to put the goddess to sleep once more, theoretically, it would be possible to end the constant war and death that have been plaguing the continent since her waking.

Following:

Mortals are fickle in their beliefs, in their prayers. In times of peace, worship of Deimos becomes almost nonexistent; however, in times of war, the goddess's name is never spoken without either a curse or a prayer attached to it. Many blame the goddess for the loss of loved ones, and they are right to do so. Although, when a victory is won in their favor, they praise the goddess and thank her for the spoils of war.

Location:

Deimos roams the continent of Eos, caring little for borders and forts, forcing her way through them with ease if the need arises. While the Boar does not have any particular home territory, anywhere there is excessive unrest and violence can likely be attributed to her presence.

Allies:

None. What does a goddess of death and war need from others, other than their heads?

Enemies:

Naturally, the goddess of Death and War is opposed by the god of life, Amis, and the goddess of order, Aheia.

Jormungandr, God of Entropy

Names:

Jormungandr, Chaos, World Serpent, The Serpent

Purview:

Jormungandr is the cause of entropy, of change, of decay. Why does the world age and wither? Because the World Serpent wills it. This natural instinct to force change, which tends to lead to the death of loved ones or even the fall of a civilization, often makes others view him as 'evil' or 'bad,' but can one truly be evil if their nature compels them to cause such horrible things to happen? If it's not something they willfully choose to do of their own volition?

Following:

The Serpent is worshiped by countless individuals, many of which are quite unsavory characters. The World Serpent's image can often be found in books of black magic, and on altars where others have been sacrificed in its name. Whether Jormungandr actually enjoys such evil acts is unknown, but it is unlikely given his general disdain for mortals and those who call his name in reverence.

Location:

Jormungandr is a serpent bound to the seas, unable to travel on land. Despite his massive size, he's rarely seen above the waves, and most often avoids the creatures beneath the surface. Preferring solitude, ironically enough, the World Serpent spends his time avoiding the rest of the World.

Allies:

None. Jormungandr doesn't care much for the other gods, and has no use for their allegiance.

Enemies:

Though the Serpent doesn't quite view them as enemies, mostly because he doesn't see them as important, there are those that oppose his machinations from time to time- Amis, Oyer and Aheia.

Aheia, Goddess of Order

Names:

Aheia, Order, World Turtle, The Turtle, Grandmother Time, Time Turtle

Purview:

Aheia's realm of influence lies in Order and Time. The Time Turtle is the guardian of the past, present and future, and exists in all timelines. Those who attempt to change the timeline with their magic draw the ire of the goddess, and can easily end up frozen in time, like all transgressors who came before them. She is the protector of law and order, though what she views as laws don't quite match up with the mortal world's ideals. Any who disrupt the natural order are enemies of the Turtle.

Following:

The World Turtle is believed in and respected by many, but directly worshiped by few. However, the god's name does come up in prayer quite often, when a loved one is on their deathbed- family and friends asking the Turtle for more time, just a few more years.

Location:

Aheia has been known to stay out at sea for the majority of each century, but it does come to the mainland on occasion, falling into a deep slumber that lasts for several years. Where it rests has varied in the past, the turtle having shown up in the Reach, the Dire, Valeria, Duren and Xadia. When on land, Aheia can easily be mistaken for a mountain, and when on the sea, an island.

Allies:

Aheia cherishes life, knowledge and magic as powerful forces that keep the natural order in tact, which in turn makes Amis, Vihena and Oyer her allies.

Enemies:

War is part of the natural order, driven by inherent mortal weaknesses, but the excessive death and violence caused in recent millennia by the Boar are not, making Deimos an enemy of the Turtle.

Order has always opposed chaos, as Aheia opposes Jormungandr.
