Chapter Summary
Chapter 1 Prologue:
Lord Thaddeus and his daughter discussed the upcoming tournament, and House Blackfin’s goals at such an event.
Thoren and his wife “Red” Lanna discussed the Blackfin succession.
Berion received a message from his sponsor, Lord Lothar Bracken.
Chapter 1
Lord Thaddeus held open court at Blackfin Den and announced that House Blackfin had received an invitation to Ser Addam Lychester’s wedding, but would not attend himself due to the demands of stewarding his own lands. Lady Gwendolyn, Ser Berion, Ser Thoren, and Darvil all volunteer.
The Blackfin party journey to the Hearty Woodsman. The squires Valen Vance and Jerom Pierce compete to impress Lady Gwendolyn. The Blackfins meet Ser Naton Serbera, heir to House Serbera, and vassal to their liege, Lothar Bracken. Ser Naton boasts of his prowess in defeating a robber knight and bedding a miller’s daughter. Several members of the group gather rumours about the upcoming tournament
They swap stories well into the evening.
Chapter 2
The party journey to Castle Lychester, where House Lychester’s champion, Ser Gareth, who formally accepts them as guests of House Lychester, and directs them to the Lorrentine Ranges, where Lord Lyman is arranging the falconry and hunt. At the Lorrentine ranges, the House meets Dunstan Tullison and Adham Lychester, heirs to their respective houses, and joined by Ser Naton and his crew of hedge knights.
Chapter 3:
The party separates, with the men journeying with Ser Adham into the forest and soon forming an easy friendship among men of action. Ser Thoren coordinates an effective pursuit of a Great Stag, and Ser Berion strikes the killing blow. A horn is sounded to force an early return to camp, upon which the party is ambushed by a great shadowcat. Darvil hangs back with other house retainers to protect the prize. The beast injured Ser Adham, but is driven away, primarily by Ser Berion, with assistance from Valen Vance. Ser Naton tells the hunters that the hunt is called off, as there is evidence of wolves and wargs in the area.
The women journey with Lord Lyman to the Lorrentine Ranges. As well as hunting with falcons, the young ladies discuss the prospects of the bachelors of the Tourney. They also meet Lady Iris, the haughty sister of Adham, and Yve, the shy sister of Dunstan, and plant the seeds of future friendships. Lord Lyman and Gwendolyn form an in-principle agreement that Gwen’s cousin Bryn shall wed the heiress of House Paege and swear allegiance to Lord Lyman, and that both houses shall collaborate to have the lands deemed fit for habitation, and cleared of bandits. Upon returning to camp, they learn that sentries have gone missing.
The Lychester camp is attacked by wolves, as the hunters race to return and defend it. The attack is repulsed, with Ser Thoren organising a charge, while Darvil, Berion, and Valen race to rescue the Blackfin women. Jenny Goodbeother surprises many by killing one wolf and badly injuring another while protecting Lady Gwendolyn from harm.
Chapter 4- The Welcoming Feast
The guests return to Lychester castle where Lord Lyman holds a feast in their honour.
Bryn Blackfin and Ser Berion offer their thoughts on knighthood, impacting internal affairs within House Darry the Lesser.
Ser Jarrak competes in a contest of tales, winning the regard of his fellow hedge knights and casting aspersions on Ser Malus Mistwood.
Lady Jenny defuses suspicions about her martial conduct, and receives a poem from an admirer
Lady Catelyn enters into her wardship, and happens upon intrigue between servants of the faith and the crown.
