Houses of the Riverlands

The Houses of the Riverlands are diverse, independent, and often fractious.

While richer houses maintain a force of armoured knights and expect the same of their landed knights, poorer houses tend to maintain a force mostly comprised of peasant levies and bowmen.

Although the majority of the Riverlands is devoted to the Faith of the Seven, the houses that lie north of the Red Fork and East of the Blue Fork are more divided, with many cleaving to the Old Gods, including House Blackwood and their vassals.

The region numbers Seven of the Most Devout, high ranking members of the Faith from various abbeys and septs, who send representatives to Stoney Sept to conduct trials of corrupt members of the faith, or to make recommendations to the King on spiritual matters.

The wealthiest houses of the region are the Darklyn's of Duskendale,  who possess both the richest port in the region, and wide lands north of the Blackwater. After them, the Mooton's and Frey's both gain great wealth on the taxing of trade through their own lands, while the Blackwoods, Brackens, Vances and Tully's all maintain high incomes from the taxation of local peasant farmers and tradesmen. The bulk local trade in iron is controlled by House Tullison, Banemark, and Blackwood, with House Darry's mines often overrun by marauding Mountain tribes.

Both the Riverlands and Stormlands lack large cities, though several large towns are present in the Riverlands, including Duskendale, Maidenpool, Stoney Sept, and Fairmarket.

The riverlands are moderately wealthy and populous, but lack the defensible terrain of other regions, leaving them prone to both bandits and foreign invaders. Much of the wilderness of the Riverlands is lawless, with Noble Houses often able to maintain law and order only in their innermost holdings. In times of conflict such order often breaks down completely, leading to the risk of anarchy and peasant rebellion. While several houses maintain small castles, only Riverrun of House Tully can rival the fortifications of the major houses of other realms. Small castles of the region include Stone Hedge, Raventree, Seaguard, The Twins, Ploughman's Keep, Atranta, and the Dun Fort at Duskendale. Most Riverlands Houses possess only a Hall, while poorer nobles and landed knights must make do with simple towers, or even the ruins of their House's former glory.
