Chapter 6A The Squire's Joust

As the Parade of Arms came to its close, knights returned to the sidelines, with many doffing their armour to observe the competition to come. Some knights boasted of their squire's daring, none louder that Ser Otto of his eldest son Ofren. It was the wealthy highborn squires who drew the eye , in fitted armour and astride steeds as steady and fine as their knightly masters; Duncan Tullison, Edric Mallister, Horas Banemark, Forrest Frey, Cedric Ravensong, and Timos Serbera all represented their Lordly fathers in the joust.

Other squires were claimed noble lineage, but only indirectly. The likes of Daveth Darry, Valen Vance, Darvil Blackfin, Roderic Charleston, Lyman Whaler, Donmere Wallain and Jerom Pierce represented knightly fathers of noble lineage. Other, humbler squires rode as well, including Ayron Kettleblack and Draco Heddle.

Sixteen in all, they rode toward the podium in front of the noble stands; upon the podium stood two figures, a veteran knight and robed cleric.

As the inferior of the competitions, it fell to Lord Lyman's Master of Arms, Ser Edam Ward, to announce the listings of the invent. Nearby loomed the Most Devout, Father Mattheus, whose presence quieted the raucous crowd into reverent quiet. Ser Edam announced what many had heard rumored before the tourney, "Father Mattheus, of the Most Devout of the Seven, himself anointed with the holy oils by the High Septon himself, has agreed to mark the occasion of House Lychester and House Connington by anointing the winner of this Squire's Tournament with the oils of knighthood, once he has been dubbed by Ser Adham, with the knights of House Lychester to stand vigil over the Sept for their night of prayer and contemplation. Let no man doubt that the champion will have proven himself a man of knightly honour, chivalry, and valour."

Ser Edam went on to announce the first round pairings:
Timos Serbera, to ride against Edric Mallister
Duncan Tullison to ride against Cedric Ravensong
Horas Banemark, to ride against Darvil Blackfin
Forrest Frey, to ride against Valen Vance
Daveth Darry to ride against Ayron Kettleblack
Jerom Pierce to ride against Donmere Wallain
Ofren Kettleblack to ride against Roderic Charleston
Draco Heddle, to ride against Lyman Whaler

Chapter 6A The Squire's Joust

A boy of 13, Young Forrest Frey rode cheerfully into the lists, slapping down his visor with an overeager palm. He rode in polished splint armour fitted for his young frame and mounted a well-bred-rounsey. He saluted Valen with the tip of his tourney lance and waited for the Tournament banner to be dropped to signify the beginning of the tilt.

When it did, he kicked his heels into the flanks of his mount, and levered himself so that he was riding High in Saddle, eager to break his first lance of the tourney.

Chapter 6A The Squire's Joust

Horas Banemark  was in many way his brother Walton's shadow; dark of hair where his brother was fair, sour of mood where his brother was often jovial.

He took to the lists having recently been rebuffed by Lady Iris Lychester and seemed to have taken the loss poorly. He shrugged off his brother's embrace, and readied his courser for the challenge to come, distractedly adjusting his suit of dark scale mail. He turned his gaze down the tourney field toward Darvil Blackfin and prepared to charge.

Chapter 6A The Squire's Joust

Valen rode up to the list with a serious tone to his expression. Not only did he have to show that he was worthy as Ser Berion's squire, he could not afford to shame Lady Catelyn for giving him her favor. He slaps his visor calmly after Forrest Frey does the same, Valen salutes the boy as well, to ride against bigger opponents at such an age surely took some amount of bravery.

As the tournament banner drops Valen spurs his horse on and levels the lance forward, however unlike his opponent he keeps his shield moderately to his side, deciding to ride Defensive (1) for this match up, he couldn't afford to be hasty, and couldn't possibly bear to lose in the first round, he'd bring Forrest Frey down through his own overeagerness.
