Chapter 7: The Knightly Joust

With a flurry of activity, the field was raked clear of broken sand bloodstains. Almost every competitor was attended by at least one aide and most by more, a mixture of squires, grooms, heralds and other attendants. Thirty-two knights competed, with half to be eliminated each round, in what many saw as a fair, but rather dull, format for competing. The knightly tournament was a larger spectacle that the squire’s, and a longer one as well, with the opening round likely to take at least as long as the entirety of the Squire’s Tournament.
In the first round, lots were drawn to determine competitors, marked by the house’s steward, and announced by Ser Edam Ward.

Lord Lyman unsheathed the tourney prize, a longsword of astounding beauty and make, with precious gems set into its hilt, before sheathing it once more and setting it on a large maroon cushion. He announced that the blade had been made by the famed Lyseni smith Lysaro, and some few folk muttered that perhaps the smith had worked some of the arts of Fallen Valyria into the blade, though Lyman made no such claim himself. The prize had arrived with Ser Jasper Wylde, who looked on the whole affair with a self-satisfied smirk.
In the opening round:
Ser Jarrak will ride against Ser Ramsbold Dun, wearing Mist’s Favour
Ser Berion will ride against Ser Ollie Kettleblack, wearing Yve’s Favour
Ser Gareth will ride against Ser Ronald Darry, wearing Alyssa’s Favour
Ser Derrin will ride against Ser Lyonel Darry, wearing Gwendolyn’s Favour

Knights make their Tilt and Stay in Saddle rolls as usual. They also make a Catch Your Breath action after each pass, with which their squire may assist.

Chapter 7: The Knightly Joust

Given the showing the squires had made, the crowd's blood was up, and thus, they were cheering raucously.  Of course, it could also have something to do with the fact that by now quite a few were more than a little drunk, but that wasn't the point.  Thankfully he had long since learned to ignore the crowds, instead, focusing solely on the task at hand.  As he had told Valen, all that matters is the next tilt, nothing else.

Saluting Ser Ollie, Berion slammed the visor on his helmet shut and readied himself for the flag to drop and the match to begin.

Ser Jarrak approached the field with a canter, the black feather affixed firmly to the right side of his helm, visible for all to see clearly.  With a formal bow of deference to Mist, should he see her, he placed himself at his end of the field, ready to charge at the drop of the flag.

Ser Jarrak rode his sleek mount acceptably, braced in the saddle rigidly.  It was only in contact that he would lean in at the last possible moment and thrust with his lance, realesing the explosive power of his body into the strike.

Chapter 7: The Knightly Joust

Valen's bruises from his competition were by no means to him an excuse to avoid his duties, as such as soon as Berion was about to face his own competition he went on to perform the tasks a squire should do at such a time.

In between passes he'd make sure to check his armour and the horse's situation while handing Ser Berion new lances and anything he might require. Steadfastedly watching as he went to exchange blows with Ser Ollie Kettleblack, fully confident that his teacher would come out victorious. He didn't know of many knights here that could truly rival Berion, though some would surely provide a challenge as the rounds went on, seeing that there were many more competitors in this competition.

OOC: By having a squire to assist him, Berion gains +1 in his CyB rolls.

Chapter 7: The Knightly Joust

Dark of hair and mood Ser Ollie was something of a shadow to his elder brother Ser Otto, lacking his brother’s braggadocio and presence, standing a full two inches shorter and with a much slimmer build. Still, the man rode into the lists with focus and skill, wearing Scale Mail and riding of horse of poor quality, but trained for war.

Unlike Berion, he showed restraint in his charges, flicking his eyes up from their target on each pass to shield his eyes. This cost him on his first pass, as his lance glanced off Berion's shield, but saved him on his third, when Berion's lance shattered on Ser Ollie's helmet, knocking him cleanly to the ground, relatively unscathed but for some bad bruising from the second pass.

He grumbled at the defeat, but showed honour in acknowledging the debt of ransom, jerking his thumb toward the gambling tables in the Tourney field where Berion might send a retainer to collect his winnings.

Chapter 7: The Knightly Joust

Ser Ramsbold carried the weight of fatigue and embarrassment with him into the lists, having humbled himself in seeking the Lady Gwendolyn’s favour. He rode a reliable courser, and donned the splint mail he favoured for both the tilt and field of battle. Determined to put such missteps behind him, he adopted a defensive stance, eager to break a few lances on the unknown hedge knight he had drawn in the lists, and taking courage from the relatively novitiate handling the man showed his mount.

Alas, on the first pass his lance slipped in an unsteady grip, missing his opponent, and in the hurry of overcorrecting, his own seat became unstable, and the Bracken bannerman was quickly undone, tasting the unsavoury bitterness of a quick defeat and sandy landing. After a long, deep sigh, he  clapped gauntlet to breastplate in salute to the victor, acknowledging the debt of ransom between them.

Chapter 7: The Knightly Joust

Ser Gareth Rivers rode into the tilt proud of his stepbrother's achievements, but aching with worry for his wellbeing. He took some respite as he slammed down his visor, knowing that he would put it to work against a detestable cousin that had sullied Daveth's name with insults and deprecation. Ser Donald seemed equally eager to vanquish kin he deemed lesser in the tilt and every other faculty, and so the air was thick with the tension of their tilt, with many in the crowd drinking deep of its heady liquor.

For three tilts they hammered into one another, each man breaking lance on shield. Ser Donald was the more experienced and better equipped, but Ser Gareth seemed to take strength from each blow dealt and received, wheeling his mount eagerly for another round while Donald still gasped to catch his breath.

Finally, on the fourth tilt, Gareth unhorsed his cousin, earning great applause from the crowd, including his natural father, Ser Lyonel, and the Lady Alyssa Knollwood, whose favour fluttered upon his sleeve.

Chapter 7: The Knightly Joust

On reaching the end of the list victorious, Ser Jarrak was surprised, and somewhat pleased.  At least he had not failed Mist the Wise in the first tilt.  While this afforded him some pleasure, he knew the coming challenges were likely to exceed his horsemanship.  Turning his Rounsey, he cantered her sleek form back to his tent, saluting the unseated Ser Ramsbold with the respect due an equal.  His eyes, however, sought eagerly for Lady Mist, from beneath his visor.  And should he find her, he would acknowledge her with a bow from his saddle as to one of respected higher station.  At his area he dismounted, and held up a tankard in offer of hospitality to his fallen opponent.

Ser Derrin leant close, whispering a quiet encouragement into his white courser's ears, before directing it forward to tilt against Ser Lyonel Darry. Each man rode defensively, avoiding the desperate charges that had characterised the squire's tilt. After five tilts, Ser Derrin claimed the victory, five lances to four, but no ransom, and each man offered salute to the other. In turn, Ser Derrin acknowledged his host, saluting both Lord Lyman and Lady Gwendolyn, whose favour he wore.

Chapter 7: The Knightly Joust

Ser Ollie's strikes were hard and true, but nothing that Berion hadn't experienced before.  With the help of Valen, he was able to catch his breath between the bouts and, in the third round, unseat his opponent.  A good start, but there were many rounds to go.

Catching Ser Ollie's gaze, the knight nodded in response to the man's wordless offer of ransom and turned to his squire.  "Valen, go see to the exchange.  There's no rush, so feel free to take in the sights.  Just make sure you're back before the second round."

Chapter 7: The Knightly Joust

As the first round of the joust unfolded, knights were elevated in victory, or tarnished by defeat, until sixteen remained to move forward to the next round. Many were surprised to see that Ser Malus Mistwood was not among them. After breaking two lances upon Ser Gunthor Underleaf, the feared sword of House Mistwood found himself unseated, displaced by the hedge knight, who sported rather uninspiring heraldry of brown snail beneath a green leaf. This left two bannermen of House Blackwood and Bracken each progressing to the second round.

Ser Edam Ward stepped forth to anounce the competitors to the second round of the joust

Facing down the heir of Ironhold, Berion couldn't help but smile from beneath his helmet.  The young man's kit was of notable quality, and if Berion could unhorse him, he'd be able to secure a second ransom, and a rather sizeable one at that.  Of course, he'd actually have to win the match first...

Tapping the side of his helmet lightly, as if such a gesture might somehow clear his head, much as before, Berion saluted his opponent before slamming his visor shut and readying himself for the match to begin.

Chapter 7: The Knightly Joust

Ser Walton rode into the lists as a flower of Andal chivalry, gold of hair and clad in polished silver plate. He wore fine plate armour and mounted a sorrel courser of fine breeding. His colours sported the black pickaxe on a bronze field, and many present gossiped that he wore the colours with more pride and gallantry than did his father, the wizened pinchpenny Lord Harald. He wore a small burgundy flower as his token from Lady Selene Mistwood, and glanced often in her direction as he prepared himself. He adopted a braced position for his early passes, taking the measure of his opponent before tipping his hand by riding high in the saddle.

Chapter 7: The Knightly Joust

Fresh from a victory over his cousin Ser Donald Darry, Ser Gareth rode into the joust against Ser Gareth with a degree of confidence. He sported his inverted Darry colours with pride, knowing that his stepbrother had already made a commendable contribution to the family name in the tourney, but hoping to add to that in his own right. He tweaked his handsome moustache before slamming down his visor, offering salute to his liege Lord Lyman and the Lady Alyssa Knollwood before entering the tilt.

Later it would be said that overconfidence contributed to Ser Gareth's defeat, judging Ser Jarrak a far inferior opponent. Regardless, he found himself in difficulty even before contact with his foe, as his horse fought hard against his reins. His own lance veered wide, while Ser Jarrak's found its mark. Perhaps Ser Gareth would have kept his seat, but the unruliness of his mount proved too much, as it snorted and pulled up short, abruptly throwing him.

Ser Gareth pulled himself to his feet, spitting sand that had penetrated his visor, and many in the crowd breathed a sigh of relief, for Lord Lyman's champion was well thought of by his smallfolk. Those sighs turned to shouts of alarm when Ser Gareth's steed abruptly lashed out with both of its rear iron-shod feet, catching the knight with a powerful kick that knocked him again into the sand, before galloping out of the lists.

Those who rushed to his aid found the champion knocked unconscious and badly stunned, but breathing. Ser Jarrak was soon declared the winner, having tilted impressively, but some folk muttered at the cruel misfortune dealt to Lyman's champion.

Chapter 7: The Knightly Joust

Walton and Berion's match was without a doubt one of the most closely watched of the second bout.  The handsome knight of Andal heritage, with his high cheekbones, golden hair and gleaming silver plate was the favorite of many a lady.  Though certainly, Iris Lychester did not count herself amongst them, if the harsh look she was casting his way were any indication.  For Berion's part, his supporters were largely limited to either family, a member of the Blackfin contingent, or those who had bet on him.

The first round was relatively uneventful and saw Ser Walton's lance skip off Berion's angled shield without shattering, thus affording the knight of the Knollwood an advantage in points.  However, during the second tilt, the Banemark heir quickly corrected his previous mistake, and the pair of them both shattered lances.

Catching his breath between bouts, it was rapidly becoming clear to Berion that Walton was a better hand at the tilt than he, and the longer this competition went on, the greater his likelihood of being unhorsed was.  Still, his opponent's control of his mount was less than perfect and maybe, just maybe, he might be able to exploit that.

Keeping his eyes on his target as the pair thundered towards one another for the third tilt, Berion spotted his opening.  Timing his strike perfectly, he managed to strike Walton in the chest just to the side of his shield.  The force of the blow lifted Ser Walton from his saddle and spun him slightly before he landed on the tournament field with an audible thud.  Thankfully the young man was relatively unharmed, and after a moment was able to stand and wave to his supporters in the stands.

The final of the prelimary rounds proved to be more chaotic than the first, as the contests tended to be closer, between more established and proven knights. Ser Derrin Erenford again rode defensively, eventually wearing down and unhorsing the younger Ser Roland on the fourth tilt, while Ser Konrad Storm was handily defeated by the veteran Ser Ronnel Beesbury. Larger and stronger knights such as Ser Otto and Ser Naton lost out to more experienced tourney knights, Ser Robar Ryger and Ser Humphrey Haigh while both House Blackwood and Bracken retained the presence of a single Bannerman in the finals, Ser Beros Wallain and Ser Berion Knollwood respectively. While two hedge knights had been eliminated, both Ser Gunthor Underleaf and Ser Jarrak remained to compete, earning glory for their progress so far.

Chapter 7: The Knightly Joust

Much as before, all eyes were on Berion's match, though this time it was because of the rivalry that existed between the patrons of the two knights.  As proxies for the Bracken and Blackwood feud, even if the two men held no personal emnity towards one another, the tension still hung heavy in the air as nobody really knew what to expect from the two men.

For his part, Berion, as usual, seemed unphased, and upon sighting his opponent, offered the man a salute before lowering his visor and readying himself once more.  If all went well, there would be just two more matches after this.  The trick would be to avoid getting too banged up in the interim.  A tournament was more an endurance match than a sprint after all.

Chapter 7: The Knightly Joust

Ser Beros was an experienced hand at the tilt, though not a common face in the tournament circuit. His knightly house had held Pennytree for generations and he was considered as chivalrous a sworn sword as might be found in service to the Blackwoods, though their foes might whisper that was little enough. His sigil showed the Blackwood Weirwood in Red on a silver field, speaking to some ancient Blackwood by-blow that had served as his ancestor. Unlike the spring bucks who tilted for courtship, Ser Beros proudly worse his wife’s favour pinned to his breast; a silver hairpin in the style of House Blackwood’s weirwood, but for the tiny pink flowers that budded on its branches. He nodded solemly to Ser Berion, showing little sign of the harsh toll earlier rounds to the joust had already exacted upon him.

Ser Berion's superior horsemanship and Ser Beros's minor injuries at the hands of Ser Desmond Heddle proved to be the deciding factor. Each knight broke three lances on the other's shield, but on the third pass Ser Berion struck the older knight from his saddle, leaving him flat on his back in the dust.

Ser Beros wears his wife's favour and can expend a destiny point to win, but will only do so to counter one that is spent against him.

Chapter 7: The Knightly Joust

Ser Humphrey Haigh was a Frey Bannerman of some influence, with expansive lands for a landed knight. He was a well-known face at tournaments throughout the Riverlands and had won several victories at smaller local tournaments. Like many of the more established Tourney knights, he was attended by a bevy of retainers, including a pair of grooms, personal armourer, and even a herald, who announced his many gallant deeds and victories to the assembled crowd as he prepared to tilt. His squire Forrest, the lesser son of Lord Frey, remained at rest in his tent in the tourney grounds, recovering from injuries sustained in the tourney. He wore Lady Iris Lychester’s favour prominently

He rode confidently against Ser Jarrak, brushing his visor closed with an idle gesture. His lance struck with the refinement of a practised veteran.

As Ser Humphrey completed the tilt, his mount reared up dramatically. Rather than fall, however, Ser Humphrey raised his gauntleted fist, fitted with Lady Iris’s token, toward the crowd, and heaved on his horse’s reins theatrically with the other. Bridled, the beast snorted, and planted its front hooves in the sand safely, before it cantered back to the lists, with the crowd cheering wildly for Ser Humphrey.

Ser Humphrey bears Lady Iris’s token, and will spend it to cancel out a destiny point used against him if that use would cause him to lose.
