Chapter 7: The Tourney Field

The shorter sides of the tourney field were given over to competitors and their retainers – with many knights erecting temporary tents, and a handful of armourers or stablehands making themselves available. Some among the hedge knights had camped here the last night or two to ensure a decent position for the tourney itself.

The smiths Jem the Barrel and Lysaro of Lys had established temporary quarters and work stations for themselves, along with their respective apprentices Clar and Torreo. They did brisk business, mostly in repairs, though a few choice pieces were sold off, mainly those that had been ordered in advance by patrons who knew to find them at the tourney. Within view of the tilt, the minstrel Sam the Sweet plucked dexterously at his lute, weaving a gauze of music and song on every passerby, while trading tall tales. Nearby, the travelling Septon Father Brooks preached the importance of faithfulness and charity to the Lychester smallfolk, while farther from the high seats, the Poor Brothers railed against the depredations of sin and the imminence of damnation.

A loose collection of kegs and tables had been set up for those with a few coppers, with the Kettleblacks roosting there with the confidence of lords returning to their ancestral seat. They cheerfully diced with grooms and men-at-arms of House Lychester, Frey, Wylde, and any passerby with more coin than sense, though Ser Otto and Ser Ollie paid close enough attention to the lists to be sure they never missed their bouts.

Word on the street was that if you had hope of seeing a maester, you’d best have a fancy name after your given one, as Lychester’s man was run off his feet with injuries from the competition. Some folk said there was a wise woman, others a witch, but you’d best already know where to look for her, as she had the tendency to vanish as her namesake Mist.

Chapter 7: The Tourney Field

In between the many rounds of the Knight's tourney Valen, after making sure Berion was set up for his next bout, Valen would spend the rest of the time traversing the fields to speak with stablehands, other squires around and whatever folk was nearby.

He talked about what could affect horses and their performances and if anyone had news of the supposed warg or knew what those mysterious mystics could do. With the brief intervals to do this he didn't expect to find much but he wanted to at least cross off some possibilities of what had happenned during his last joust.

OOC: Valen rolls a 7 on Streetwise(Knowledge) to pursue information.

Chapter 7: The Tourney Field

Valen finds a good deal of general information quite easily, but little in the way of specifics.

A merchant from Fairmarket tells him that there are queer potions from Essos that can turn man or beast's mind mad with rage, though these are often fatal. Local folk remedies could perhaps affect a beast's mind as well, but would likely need to be fed to the beast.

A squire relates how his own mount never quite took to war training, and became easily spooked during a joust, causing the animal great distress.

A groom wearing Lychester colours tells him that horses are easily driven to distraction by familiar scents, such as a mare in heat, or unfamiliar ones, especially great predators such as wolves, bears, or shadowcats.

The Travelling Septon Father Brooks tells him that skinchangers are horrendous monsters capable of turning into animals, or bending them to their will. Some are not human at all, but demons that assume the forms of men after killing them, and take their place. They are hard to find, but common among the faithless heathen's North of the Red Fork and The Neck. The Faith has means to test the guilt or innocence of anyone so accused, the man reassures Valen, so it is best to report any suspicions to a Septon before casting wild accusations. It is a terrible shame that the King's law forbids the Faith from rooting out such monsters who prey on the common folk north of the Red Fork, the man shakes his head in pious compassion.
