Chapter II: Shroud of Darkness

The rooms into which the party are ushered by Dalgun may not be the finest that any of them have ever stayed in, but their meals are not the worst they have eaten, and the parlour turns out to be quite cozy, with a small fire burning in the corner and comfortable, if rather patched and threadbare, armchairs about a small table.

Chapter II: Shroud of Darkness

Zaelinor limps around the room, teeth gritted against admitting any kind of discomfort, inspecting it for traps, assassins, and vermin.

"I can't believe humans actually pay to sleep in accommodations such as these."

"I would gladly pay more were finer quarters available," Lastergon says with more than a touch of haughtiness as he examines a piece of salted beef with a dubious expression.

Calsia glances about the room, shrugging.

"Seems all right to me."

Zaelinor's withering sneer says exactly what the varim thinks of that.

"So," says Lastergon after a moment, abandoning a half eaten oat cake and rising to pace before the fire. "These cultists have control of the mayor and are searching for something in this crypt in the mine. How many of them do you think there are?"

"You know, you shouldn't waste food," Calsia sniffs, eying the half eaten oak cake. "There are people starving in some parts of Verun."

"They are more than welcome to it," Lastergon shoots back, eying the half eaten cake darkly.

Chapter II: Shroud of Darkness

Zaelinor, who makes no effort to touch any of the food himself, sinks with what's clearly an effort at regal grace, into one of the moth-eaten chairs.

"Not that it's any of my business, but if I were a cultist, I would start my cult near someone wealthy but sick who could be duped into investing in whatever afterlife I was selling. I wouldn't do it near a hovel where the most coin I would get for my efforts would be commons unless my primary interest was collecting corpses who wouldn't be missed."

Chapter II: Shroud of Darkness

Dorin, busy settling in with a satisfied grunt into what he clearly feels is an acceptable and hearty meal, shakes his head.

"Spoiled, that's what ye be, that be the truth of it. In ya father's day, Knights didn't turn their noses up at good meals like ya royal dandies,"
Dorin bites into a cake with an audible crunch.

If Lastergon feels that Dorin wouldn't have the slightest clue about the lifestyle of his father and the circles he moves in, he is polite enough not to say it. He contents himself with what he feels is a dignified glance at the dwarf, before responding to Zaelinor.

"It does not surprise me that a varim is an authority on cults, however these thugs clearly have no interest in duping the peasants of this town into trusting and entrusting their meagre resources to them. From what this Dundul fellow describes-"

"Him," Lastergon concedes with a wave in Calsia's direction. "It seems that these cultists only showed up after the crypt was discovered. And as the town has nothing else to commend it, that must be the reason for it."

Chapter II: Shroud of Darkness

Whether Zaelinor is or isn't an expert on standard operating procedures for establishing cults seems to be something the varim feels may be better left unsaid.

"And cults get free access to crypts where a mining business would need to pay taxes, do they?" Zaelinor says dubiously.

"The mayor is clearly under the sway of this cult or one of their number," Lastergon argues. "If he has closed off the mine citing safety issues or the like then there is little the owners of the mine can do. Especially since they are all cowed by these ruffians."

"Dorin, what are your thoughts?" Calsia inquires, making it clear whose opinion she feels might actually be worth hearing in this situation.
