The Basilisk Gate

Welcome to Baldur's Gate, a veritable nest of rats and vipers clinging to the rocky slopes overlooking the Chionthar River. From their high perches in the Upper City, the local nobles—known as patriars—gaze down with veiled contempt upon the common rabble in the grimy Lower City, which hugs the foggy harbor. The whole of Baldur's Gate reeks of blood, crime, and opportunity. One can easily fathom why pirates and traders are drawn to this place like flies to a carcass.

Following the river farther east would eventually lead you to Elturel, capital of the holy land of Elturgard—or at least that was the case until a few days ago. The flood of refugees from Elturel has gotten worse since news first arrived that the city has fallen. Everyone is saying Baldur's Gate is next, but no one truly knows who or what has claimed Elturel.

The patriars pay a mercenary army called the Flaming Fist to protect their interests in Baldur's Gate, and by extension, the city itself. The Flaming Fist has gained even more power since their charismatic leader, Ulder Ravengard, claimed the title of Grand Duke a few years ago. Apparently, Ravengard is missing. In his absence, the Flaming Fist has sealed the city's gates to staunch the flow of refugees. No one is allowed in or out.

All of this was brought to your attention shortly after you were drafted by the Flaming Fist to help defend the city. Your orders are to speak to Captain Zodge at the Basilisk Gate, which pierces the city's eastern wall and takes its name from the various statues that rest in its niches and perch atop its battlements. Unseen beyond the sealed Basilisk Gate, a dirt road stretches through the Outer City slums to the bridge known as Wyrm's Crossing, then to distant realms beyond.

Dozens of Flaming Fist soldiers are trying to control an angry mob of commoners eager to leave the city. Armed with only a vague description of Captain Zodge—a tall man with long black hair and a leather eye patch—it takes you a while to find him. A fight breaks out between soldiers and commoners, and you finally spot the one-eyed captain as he wades into the fray and begins throwing punches. Just another day in the City of Blood.

The Basilisk Gate

A stout dwarf appears below the Basilisk Gate and takes a moment to survey the scene. He is clad in leather and meticulously linked mail, with bare arms and a padded leather apron cinched around his ample middle. His arms and apron are singed and scarred; he carries a massive hammer in a loop at his belt, a finely wrought shield across his back, and a cask of ale under his arm. His hair is wild, his skin weathered, and his look one of resolve and slight impatience. He spots the mercenary captain wading into the melee and bellows across the crowd, "Zodge! ZODGE!"

Remembering the man's rank and humanity's relatively short lives, he mutters under his breath-- "How quickly they promote these impulsive younglings!"-- and heads off into the brawl using his shield as a plow blade to part the crowd. "Captain! Captain, a word!" When he reaches the man, he introduces himself in a gravelly growl: "Vigg Hammerhand, Captain. I've brought us a fine cask to share once we've sorted out this mob. And I'm not alone, either... I'm told there are others sent down to join us."

On the other side of the crowed there was a tired Dragonborn solider Paladin. The crowd stay clear for him, because he look intimidating with his dirty beating armor and shield on his back. Scales are black as a unpolished gemstone, scars all over his tail and a large scare on his left eye. Eyes of the goodish color and teeth, flaws sharp as knifes.

As he spotted the Captain though the crowd because of his 6'7" height. He started to make his way though the crowd on the corner of his eye, He spot a Dwarf plowing through the crowd with using his shield. The Paladin solider started to laugh as he make his way to the captain pushing people to the side and other are moving out of the way with fear. When finally get to the captain he pound his fist at his chest and say "captain my name is First Lieutenant Silvery Stone sir. Do you need help controlling the crowd sir"

Perched atop the gate, unnoticed among the statues, Qrurr, briefly unwraps the leather straps from his lower legs. He glances at the brilliant inscribed metal bracer on his left ankle and blinks rapidly wondering if he made the right decision. He quickly re-wraps before unfolding his brilliant red flight wings and swooping into the fray 30 feet from Captain Zodge. He casually slashes the throats of a few would-be-assailants on the way.

Struggling with human language he regretfully says, "I am Qrurr. What are your orders?"

At just under 3 ft I’m tall for a rock gnome but how am I supposed to find this Zodge guy when all I see is knees. The mayhem of Basilisk Gate is starting to wear on me when a shield wielding dwarf yelling for the very man I am looking for knocks me over, quickly gathering my tool satchel I fall into his wake. Thankful for the dwarfs help I find myself at the feet of Zodge, he is tall and looks to be very preoccupied. I wait for the opportunity to catch the attention of the captain. Ducking as a winged man swoops overhead, a drop of blood from the beasts claw falls at at my feet.

Vigg fixes Captain Zodge with a level gaze. "If the first order of business is making Baldur's Gate safer for its folk, you can count me in... so long as it doesn't include beating and robbing panicked peasants." He frowns and furrows his brow at that. "The followers of the Dead Three won't know what hit them. But you're arresting Hellriders? Wouldn't it make more sense to recruit them? Assuming whatever consumed Elturel may well head this way next, I assume you'd make common cause with them. But what business of mine is it what the Flaming Fist does?"

When Vigg spots the gnome, he claps him on the shoulder. "If it isn't my old friend the Screw-Smith! A finer tinker there never was. Will you help me empty this cask if Captain Zodge isn't up to it? And who else will join this band? There's enough for all to share..." He looks around at the gathering of unlikely allies.

Re: The Basilisk Gate

The Captain says, "Hellriders are religious zealots. We can not recruit the likes of them. Our goals do not align. They do belong in prison."

With that you agree to the Captains Terms and head East from Basilisk Gate to the Elfsong Tavern.

No wise person walks the streets of Baldur's Gate or enters one of its taverns without a weapon or an armed escort. Anyone who has lived in the city for more than a tenday knows this from experience. Taverns might appear safe at a glance, but they are among the most dangerous places in Baldur's Gate—full of alcohol, tempting coin, and unscrupulous people. Volothamp Geddarm, a notorious raconteur known for his tavern reviews, encapsulates his Baldur's Gate experience as "hard on the stomach, especially when someone sticks a knife in there." Customers are expected to look after themselves when fights break out, and one shouldn't expect any help or sympathy from the Flaming Fist. Tavern murders are common, and usually end with the poor victim being dragged away and either left in an alley (to be picked clean by urchins, then eaten by rats) or tossed in the harbor.

From time to time, the disembodied voice of a female elf fills the tavern with a melancholy song, giving the establishment its name. The ballad isn't loud enough to disrupt conversation, but most patrons stop speaking when the elfsong begins, then resume only after it ends. Many customers frequent the tavern in the hopes of hearing it. Those who speak Elvish can understand the lyrics, which lament an unnamed lover lost at sea. No one is sure how the spirit came to haunt the tavern, just as no one can predict when it will sing again. There are dozens of patrons filling the place.

Vigg swaggers into the tavern, orders a meal, and pays a concession to the barman to tap his cask and pour a round. He leaves an extra pint for the manager to sample his brew with the offer of a larger batch, then heads to a table where he can watch the room. He kicks out a stool for the tinker, eyes the door for the dragonborn, and waits to see what kind of scene the birdman will cause. He decides to await the others and to give Tarina a chance to find him on her terms before he starts asking around for her.

Re: The Basilisk Gate

The bird man goes upstairs and watches a round of the game Baulders Bones. He watches a round to see how it works.

Each player puts the agreed ante in the pot.

Each player rolls three dice. Play then proceeds clockwise around the table, with the host of the game going last.

On their turn, a player can choose to "stand" or "roll." If the player stands, the next player can take a turn. A player who rolls takes an additional die and rolls it. If the total of their dice exceeds 21, they "bust" and are out of the game. Otherwise they can keep rolling additional dice until they either stand or break.

After everyone has had a turn, the highest point total (excluding players who busted) wins the game and takes the pot.

Qrurr then moves to one of the tables. A few of the patrons look at the birdman and then three individuals in a row bust and leave. Leaving two players left at the table.

A human female and a male half elf. The half elf looks at the woman shrugs and then throws in an ante.

He looks to the woman and says, "I'm in a tough spot. You appear to know how these bones roll. What would you play?"

Knowing that the game is winner takes all, Qrurr tries to deduce as much as possible from her response.

Re: The Basilisk Gate

When Vigg returns from the pissoir, the table is empty, but the dragonborn are easy enough to spot on the upper landing. He swings by the main bar on the way up, leans over to the manager he spoke with before, and orders another round. He pays for the drinks in silver, then meaningfully places a gold coin next to them. "A local lass by the name of Tarina is held in high regard by an old friend of mine... I'd be much obliged if she could pay us a visit in a quieter room. P'raps up there?" He gestures to the gaming suite, then stomps up the stairs bearing the tray of brimming clay mugs and a few clean glasses.

Upon entering the gaming room, he sees the scene shaping up and settles in to watch. When Qrurr solicits a drink, he sees the opportunity to create a bit of a scene to provide cover for... well, whatever shenanigans his new or old friends might be up to. "We've killed the cask, m'lad, but I've got a fine barleywine I brewed last season. But be careful... it's a wee cup if you want to win at dice, and a bottle to forget what you've lost." He produces a dark bottle, cracks the wax seal and uncorks it with his teeth, and pours a round in a dramatic fashion. The red-brown brew clings to the glassware like lamp oil and has an aroma of toasted barley, pepper, and plums.

[OoC]: Sorry to fall off the pace... it's been a crazy week. Can Vigg create a diversion to give Qrurr and Screw some Advantage on whatever they're trying to pull off?

[OoC] Captain Screwdriver Head and I spoke IRL and we discussed if he would be able to manipulate the dice either mechanically or magically. I don't really know his character sheet so I'm not sure which approach would work best.

I mean I have a +3 on Sleight of Hand so that could potentially work too if somebody created a trick die.

I also don't know if I'm trying to chat up the right NPC. It could easily be the half elf with the info or neither.

As the Dwarf enters the gambling area and starts to slosh his wears about there are some scowls and some laughs. The woman Tarina then says,"Are you going to roll the dice or not pretty bird."

OOC: If you want to try to force the die I will give you a sleight of hand check with a set DC you have to beat. I will even give you advantage due to the dwarfs entrance. Or if the gnome actually imbued the die to come out 4 you have nothing to worry about.

Re: The Basilisk Gate

As the team sets in as to look as if they are not together and not associated with Tarina especially the dragonborn who spread out more and try best to make themselves look non-threatning a song in Elvish begins to waft in the air. The sound comes from the voice that gives the Elfsong it's name. As the song begins the people around you seem astonished and you hear murmurs.

"Never heard this song before."

"When was the last time she sang a new song."

"Been a life time since she added a new song."

Those of you that do not understand elvish find a local interpreter sitting nearby that recounts the words to you.

O sing a song of Elturel
Of water, woods, and hill
The sun dawns on her ruddy cliffs
And fields green and still.

This land of long-abiding joy
Home of the strong and brave
Renowned by all, across the realms,
And never once a slave.

O sing a song of Elturel
When foes are at her door
Her fields torn by cloven feet
From some infernal shore.

Arise the mighty Hellriders
Take up your swift, keen swords
Then charge into the hellish fray
And scatter devil hordes.

O sing a song of Elturel
And when the night does fall
Sleep safe beneath Companion's light
Until the dawn does call.

We're bound by mortal covenant
That only ends with death
And so we'll sing of Elturel
Until our final breath.

Soon after the song plays you hear a voice from downstairs say, "We're looking for an old friend of ours. Goes by the name 'Tarina,' or so I'm told. Loves to cheat at Baldur's Bones. An ale to anyone who gives the location of this individual."

Several murmurs can be heard and then foot steps are on the stairs. Eight motley humans saunter up the stairs. The leader is a brawny man with a cloudy right eye, a cruel sneer, and a pirate's swagger. The others are an unsavory, rowdy bunch who act as if they own the place.

As the dead eyed man crests the top of the stairs he sees Tarina points and says, "Ah there you are lass. I want me treasure and I want ye life."

The Pirates seem unaware of Qrrur and Vigg.

OOC: If anybody would like to do anything like talk please let me know. If you would like to enter combat roll a d20 and add your initiative modifier. Tell me what you r going to do on your turn and roll any attack and damage die as appropriate.

The Fog clears from MegaStallions eyes at the voice of the Pirate Captain. He shakes his head, gets up from the couch and steps up to the pirates. A gurgling belching noise erupts from his throat. The Pirates all turn at the sound to see fire blech from the dragonborns mouth encompassing 5 of the pirates including the captain.

OOC: Firebreath for 9 points of damage. Dead Eye takes 9 points, Pirate G34 takes 9 points, Pirate G35 takes 9 points, Pirate H34 takes 4 points of damage, Pirate I 34 takes 9 points of damage.

Tarina hops up on the table draws a rapier, points it at the smouldering Dead Eye and says , "You don't think I would just let you catch me did you. You are meeting my new associates now."

The pirates being caught off guard stare at their flaming compatriots.

Vigg emerges from the room and says,"She'll keep the treasure, m'boy, and you'll keep your own life, if you walk out now and trouble the lass no more. Stay, and by Clangeddin's sweaty jewels, I'll ring your bell like it's never been rung!" Vigg has his shield strapped to one arm, and his massive forge hammer hangs loosely in his opposite fist. His hammer shoots up into the the air and light beams strike out and hit: Qrrur, ScrewHead and himself.

OOC: Casts Bless.

Sitting on the couch and eating a piece of cheese ScrewHead seems surprised to see the pirates but raises his hand and shoots a bolt of fire at the nearest one.

OOC: Pirate at F33 takes 6 points of damage.

Qrrur gets off the couch as well and closes with the pirates. He makes a viscous strike at the Pirate in front taking his head clean off of him and seeing the burnt form of the pirate standing next to him strikes that one with his off hand.

OOC: I rolled for Qrrur attacks and he rolled a critical natural 20. Pirate I35 takes 2d6 + 3 points of damage = 14 points. Qrrur rolled a 3 for that one and missed.

Dead Eye looks at Tarina and says, "You always were one crafty Bitch. You will die here." However he seems hesitant to move as the party closes on him and his men.

OOC: Pirates and Dead Eye are surprised and unable to act this round.

Silvery closes in on the Captain and aims a wild upward arc at him that goes wide.

Kriv steps to the fight and brings his flail down on the head of one of the pirates caught in the breath weapon. Llaying him low with the combined damage.

OOC: Hit Pirate at G35 for 5 points bringing his total damage to 14 points and killing him.

With a fight breaking out in the gambling area the others playing games jump from their tables and move to the side of the room in fright.

OOC: Please give me next round actions no need to roll initiative.

11 Qrrur
11 Dead Eye
8 Silvery

Mega Stallion spreads his fingers and whispers every so quietly to the pirates, "Sleep." Purple mist rolls from his fingers and out over the assembled pirate convention.

OOC: The Pirates at G34, I34, H34 and drop asleep tot he ground.

From the Table top Tarina says to Dead Eye as she waves her hand at the sleeping pirates, "Your boys seems to be sleeping on the job."

The last remaining awake pirate seems to take offense at the Dragonborn with the sleepy fingers and tries to stab him.

OOC:MEga Stallion is hit for 6 points of damage.

Vigg charges the awake pirate and slams him with his hammer.

OOC: Pirate J33 takes 8 points of damage.

Screw Head fires off a wild firebolt and no one can tell what the target was.

Qrrur finishes off the pirate at J33 with a viscous double attack.

Dead Eye looks around at his fallen comrades lets out a vicious scream and lunges at Silvery. His attack goes very wide however.

Silvery returns the missed attack at Dead eye but the hit finds a critical point under the arm on the pirate captain.

OOC: Dead Eye takes 15 points of damage.

Kriv closes with the Pirate Captain as well and wallops him good in the head with his flail.

OOC: Dead Eye takes 5 points of damage for a total of 20 points.

Tarina taunts the man some more. "Looks like you have led your men to their deaths, Dead Eye."

Vigg moves to cover the stairs.

Screw runs over to frisk the dead and sleeping pirates. As he searches one man he feels a shadow fall on him. He looks up to see the menacing form of Captain Dead Eye looking down at him.

Qrrur lets loose an arrow which goes wide.

Holding his Scimitar in one hand and his dagger in the other Dead Eye lunges forward making two attacks against Silvery dropping the large Dragonborn to the ground and on the return swings his dagger at Kriv.

The group after successfully conquering their first foes decide it best to rest before heading to the bathhouse. They enjoy some drink and rest in the room that Vigg had acquired for the evening. The spell casters look over their spells while those that were wounded see to those injuries. In the morning they head off for the bath house.

As you make your way through Baulder's Gate the frightened clamor of a dozen condemned geese drowns out all other sounds. Their wings clipped, one leg tied to a post with blue thread, the geese can only squawk and scamper around the small cook-stall. It's no use. One by one, the grey geese are snatched up by an elderly grandmother, who expertly severs their heads with an old and often repaired hatchet. She curtly tosses the still struggling corpse to one of her many brawny grandsons deeper in the stall's shadows for cleaning and cooking. The air smells of tangy exotic spices and the panicked excrement of the dying geese.

You find yourself finally in front of the bathhouse which is a one-story stuccoed building with stained-glass windows and clay roof tiles. Ten-foot-tall walls enclose a large courtyard outside the southeast corner of the building. The closed wooden doors to the courtyard are engraved with images of smiling nymphs dancing and frolicking in water.

OOC: During a long rest which is 8 hours all hit points are refreshed any special abilities reset and all spell slots are restored.

[OoC] Any other ways to rush in? I can cause a distraction. I have torches and the courtyard door is wooden. If there's another way to get in I'll just light the door on fire, get back to my post, and pluck as many off as I can with my longbow.

I'm thinking we'll need the boat later but not necessarily now.

Vigg Enters the Bathhouse and sees that the walls of this twenty-foot-high pillared chamber are adorned with frescoes of bathing royalty. Natural light streams through stained-glass windows, creating colorful patterns on the tiles of polished blue marble that cover the floor. Three shallow, sunken pools contain scintillating perfume-scented water. White marble benches bearing stacks of dry towels are situated near the pools, each of which comes equipped with a pair of brass faucets.

Sitting in two of the tubs are two human males enjoying the steam and warmth of the water. They both causally look at Vigg before going back to whatever they were doing before he walked in.

Kriv makes his way to the harbor. On his way he sees A leathery gnome merchant has stopped to chat with a pair of human masons, and possibly make a sale. A sheaf of dried tobacco leaves protrudes from the gnome's backpack, and he hunches low under the weight. Leather pouches filled with sweet-smelling dried tobaccos and teas hang from the gnome's every button hole and from his braided rope belt.

He is then greeted by the sight of ships and docks. Kriv asks around and finds that the Uncivil Servant is moored on the East end of the harbor. He does notice that people give him a wide berth at the mention of the name though but still point in the general direction.

OOC: Anyone else headed that way...

Re: The Basilisk Gate

"Agreed. Unless we want our sturdy vessel to rot at its moorings, we'll need every man here and that many again. If they're owed for their last voyage with next one unsure, they may be hard to keep. And there's the question of piracy over honest trade. Whether we go along or not, we need a cargo, a destination, and a sailing master, if one can be found. We could also ask around for a buyer. Nothing easy about it either way, but we'll be wealthy if it comes good."

[OoC]: Did we split the party? I thought everyone had tagged along on this errand. I hope everyone weighs in on the fate of this boat. I'm okay selling it and getting deeper into the other plots around town or trying to crew this thing up and sail it around.

Vigg nods at the birdman, then faces the remaining crew. "The Uncivil Serpent has changed hands and the Captain has been relieved of his duties. We represent the new owners. I'd be obliged if someone could muster the crew to the deck, and could the senior member of the crew step forward?"

"You'll be paid for the work you do from this day forward, if you choose to stay on. If your old captain owed you anything, that's between you and him... if you can find him. I'd never ask you to split your coin... I'd more likely offer to double it for a short time, if this half-a-crew can keep up the ship as well as a whole one until we hire some new hands. Meanwhile, you should hold a vote for a leader among you-- I imagine you'll be a contender as the senior man-- and the first two duties will be to report on the state of the ship and to share out extra measures of rum to celebrate the new ownership of the Uncivil Serpent."

The man eyes you, "Fair enough. You heard the dwarf fetch the rum. You can call me Sue and I can be the first mate since I take it he won't be coming back. Since we be in Port ye owe us nothing as long as we gets to stay on the ship. As far as pay goes I would say you looking at 1gp piece per hand per day."

"Let's have a drink with Sue and the lads and then get back to our business in town this evening. Maybe we'll have time to ask around the docks about taking on crew and picking up work. In the meantime, Sue should take command of the ship and crew and stay sharp... we may want to move quickly at some point."

[OoC]: I don't know if we want to make this boat the center of our efforts, but it's a cool option. Also not sure if we can make it a business venture on the side while we pursue other things. Maybe the Captain of the Flaming Fist wants to hire us as privateers? If anyone wants to ignore the bathhouse and go all in on this, speak up, otherwise I'd like to follow up on the cult.

One of the crew materializes from below deck with a bottle of rum. Crude cups are passed around. The rum is poured and drank. Sue spits into his hand and extends it to Vigg. "Tis a Pirate thing." he says

[OoC] is there any cargo or items of value on this ship. Anything we could use for the Bathhouse raid?

Outside of dry or salted rations there is some treasure but Sue has made it clear that belongs to the crew who had been on the ship and the previous owner. There are also the personal arms of the sailors crewing the ship.

Sue steps aside with Vigg and says, "Aye many of the taverns close to the dock could find able bodied men. I will send out some crew to get a list of those able bodied."

"I think so. Sue and the lads seem happy to live on the ship for free while we figure out what to do with it. We'll send them a few bottles now and then to keep them happy and they'll keep the Serpent afloat. So unless anyone has errands in town, we go sit  outside the baths until nightfall? If we go in when the girls go out, I think we know where to go from there."
