Giulia was a dragon's egg trophy brought home by Flavio, the fifteenth Earl of Adragna.  He did not expect it to hatch, and it stayed apparently doing nothing but be impressive for several years-- but it hatched in the middle of a terrible storm a few years after the birth of his youngest daughter, Gianna.  Giulia was originally raised as a companion and bodyguard to Gianna, trained by Gianna's brothers in the arts of combat and knighthood... but Gianna was married off to the Caradini family, and the Caradini's wouldn't have a dragon in their household.  This left an awkward question of what to do with Giulia, but ultimately, it was decided that she must find her own way in the world, and so she was sent off to learn how to be an adventurer.
