End of the Battle

[You know when I stopped on 4 July I thought it would be a week or two off and then I'd be back, my life got very full then though, so...

Anyway, I’ve decided that my tardiness has just spoiled this fight and I am going to fast forward through this based on what’s happened so far. Sorry if anyone was looking forward to playing out the fight, but I suspect it does not resolve well anyway in “Darryl Time”].

Let’s take each area in turn:

The Temple of All the Deities:

Ulf is up top chucking javelins like lightning bolts (which they pretty much are as he’s channelling Orlanth’s Thunderous aspect in a manner to surprise, well, all of us).  A couple of the thugs made it into the temple and Ulf amuses himself chucking a few more javelins at the guys trying to beat down the front door of the pawnshop before turning his attention to the ladder from the temple into the tower. There’s a female scream shortly afterwards – no doubt the thugs have encountered the temple attendants, Ulf hopes they are OK but awaits the thugs at the top of the tower.

Eventually they appear briefly at the foot of the ladder to check if the coast is clear before trying to climb up. Ulf then jumps out of the shadows pelts them with his last few javelins and without bothering to check whether they survived does what Ulf does best, i.e. legs it: somewhat surprisingly he leaps from the tower and his luck or perhaps faith stays with him and Orlanth leads him to a soft landing near the Tin Inn – it's good to worship a deity of the air... Ulf then heads over to join the fight by the front door of the pawnshop, mainly by bushwhacking any unsuspecting thugs otherwise dealing with the shop’s defenders.

The Back Door

Mica has been keeping the heads down of the guys on the roof and occasionally taking pot-shots at the thugs at the back door, let’s call this a target rich environment.

Meanwhile inside the kitchen Harmast and Angara prepare to receive boarders. After a certain amount of battering the door gives way and a couple of thugs barge in. To almost everyone’s surprise there’s a sudden gathering of magical energy followed by a “whump” and the lead thug suddenly flies backwards out of the kitchen (his colleague ducks out of the way hurriedly) to lie unmoving on the grass outside. The remaining thug looks at Angara and Harmast and the air of smugness that now fills the kitchen (clearly Gringle was not kidding about having some decent defences) someone is likely to guess there’s a spirit or wyter bound into the shop that objects to attackers/burglars. Anyway, the thug calculates the odds in a split second and then legs it the hell out of there. Angara and Harmast debate pursuit but decide to leave Angara guarding the door (although it seems pretty feisty all by itself) whilst Harmast heads back to the front door.

The Front Door and the Street

This is where the main action is. That said the thugs have taken a scary amount of time to break down the front door, when they do they are met by arbalest fire and the Guardian Spirit of the Shop. There’s a brief but spirited exchange between Iskalla, Gringle and Quackjohn (and Gringle’s spirit Eighty Eyes) and the remaining thugs at the front door. Eventually the thugs break and run with Harmast joining in the chase and Ulf encouraging people to be on their way from the shadows.

Aftermath

The party is careful to let the thugs get away, nobody is in a hurry to have to pay out wergild which is likely to be considerable. These were no mere collection of random thugs. Their leader, Darsten Black Oak is a cousin of the King of the Colymar! His followers are initiates of the traitor god Doburdan, a storm god enslaved by Yelm. The good news is that although a lot of injuries were dished out none appear to have been life threatening. Overall, you have acquitted yourselves pretty well.

On a less happy note Fyri appears to have suffered somewhat from taking on a number of thugs by himself and will need some rest.

And the least happy of all, back around the Tin Inn away from the pawnshop and on the other side from the Temple to All the Deities, there lies the corpse of the local sheriff. His wife is sobbing over him and various dismayed looking villagers cluster around. Gringle looks genuinely shocked “he was the king’s man...”, Others add: “the Varmandi will eat us alive!” Quackjohn looks away. You eventually get the story out of the onlookers: apparently after the fighting started and Darsten and the red witch had retreated around this corner, the sheriff approached them, and whilst he was talking to Darsten the witch pulled out her twin scimitars and skewered him from behind. Regrouping later Gringle is noticeably shaken:

“We must leave here. They will return. And their retaliation will be terrible.”

He turns to you and asks if you will escort him, Quackjohn and Squinch to Quackford where they can hire a boat to take them to Nochet City safely away from Lunar reach.

What do you think? And what do you want to do?

Ulf is very pleased to hear the compliment and hides it badly - 'Oh, I was lucky to have Orlanth with me'.

We need to get out of here, no-one will believe us that the Red Witch killed the sheriff. I agree, the most sensible would to escort these folks out of lunar reach.

Mica quietly gathers up her things, pulling them out of any groaning men she can still find, then slips into the woods to clean them off and rewrap them in her Totem

She finds the Geese and thanks them for their help.

When the others finally think to look for her, they will find her doing the Goose Dance of Victory in the backyard with a goofily vacant look on her face.

Let's get going as quickly as possible.  I will gather my stuff together, cleaning weapons if needed.  Might keep the 'frying pan of dooooooonnnnnngggggggg' as a suitable non lethal weapon and breakfast implement.

Grateful Gringle offers to give you one of his three treasures in return:

[recap they are the Eye of the Halfbird, “I got this from one of the Masters of Luck and Death many years ago. He said it was the mortal eye of the immortal Halfbird – a strange creature born before the Emperor. Half of it proved mortal and is little more than a skeleton, the other half seeks to restore the dead half to life.”

The Lead Grimoire. “I received this from a treacherous wizard some years back. He was outfitting an expedition to Cliffhome to speak with Cragspider. He tried to reclaim the Grimoire (saying that it was essential for a future meeting) but could never repay what I loaned him.”

The Iron Cardinal’s Egg. “This came from Wenelia, from somewhere in the ruins of long-lost Slontos. I think it comes from further still, but am not entirely sure where. If properly warmed, it will hatch a chick, but I am not sure I know what I would do with an iron cardinal! Better to sell the possibility of one!”]

Gringle and Quackjohn say they need about a day to get all their movable possessions together.

In the meantime you are approached by Piku Gastapakis https://kanka.io/en/campaign/39663/characters/532861, he is a local Smith of very odd mien. He is clearly no follower of Gustbran (god of the local redsmiths). He asks if you will take him and his family with you. In return he offers his services as a cunning metalsmith.

What does anyone thing - the ability to bring someone half to life sounds useful, but as it is only half, I am not sure it is that useful.

Mica, have you heard of the Iron Cardinal?  And do we know what is described in the Lead Grimoire?

And I dont have a problem with taking this man as long as they are not going to hold us back.  Anyone else object?

Sorry I was being a bit unclear (or maybe Gringle was) he's offering to give you one, but he's not specified which one yet :-) I was just reminding you what they were.

Gringle and Quackjohn have gathered everything onto a cart pulled by a couple of mules (holy creatures of Issaries) and Piku and his family also have a cart but this one is pulled by a collection of goats, bit of a sidebar here – goats are considered unclean by all right thinking Orlanthi, that’s because they bear some resemblance to the goat headed Broos and so are suspected of being chaotic. Only desperate Orlanthi would eat goatmeat. Anyway let me know your reaction to these creatures. Also a very weird looking similarly goatlike creature is tied to the back of the cart, it seems to be blind and quite possibly is a broo of some sort!
