Off Topic (OOC)

Hello everyone, just a brief update on other games I am running if anyone is interested in joining another game/genre.

My Boot Hill game (3rd edition) is finishing up the Mad Mesa module and there is an opportunity to introduce new characters before starting the next module.

The Survivors game (19th century shipwreck scenario) has had a couple of players drop out, there are 2 characters available for adoption in that game, there will not be an opportunity to introduce new players/characters for some time.

I have 2 Star Frontiers games:

The Volturnus Campaign is early/classic Star Frontiers, one character is currently available for adoption, there may be an option for new characters to be introduced to that game if anyone is interested.

The Invasion of Gran Quivera Campaign is late Star Frontiers timeline, with most new skills & tech from Zebulons Guide available.  New characters can be introduced almost anytime, the setting is an invasion of the largest city in the Frontier, the players fighting off alien invaders.

The World of Greyhawk game is classic 1st edition AD&D, the party are currently in the Free City so new characters can be introduced and there are also a number of orphaned characters that can be adopted before the party leave the city.

My Home Brewed project, The Lost Regiment is currently on hiatus until I can find new players willing to take on this game, which is now headed in more of a war gaming direction rather than role playing.  Not to say there is no role playing :)

Anyone interested in any of these games, feel free to PM me :)

If anyone is interested in killing zombies in the Wild West, I have just restarted an old test game of mine "13th US Cavalry Vs Zombies".  This game was originally a play test for a set of Home Brewed RPG rules that I now use in a couple of my games.

I have decided the restart the game with expanded skills and backgrounds for a bit of mindless, fun, zombie killing so it is no longer just the 13th Cavalry, survivors can come from almost any background now :)

I like a lot of westerns and typically break them into different eras or stars.  For example, by John Wayne I like The Searchers, Fort Apache, Rio Bravo, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, True Grit and The Shootist.  From that era I also like Shane and High Noon.

I like most Clint Eastwood westerns but my favourites there would be the Sergio Leone "man with no name" trilogy, The Outlaw Josey Wales and Unforgiven.

There are also standalones that I like, movies like Tombstone, Open Range, Appaloosa, Silverado, the True Grit remake and more.  And the Lonesome Dove mini-series with Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones.

Lastly, I've played both Red Dead Redemptions.

High Planes Drifter (actually one of the 5 best movies ever made. It is actually a horror movie disguised as a western...)
Quigley Down Under (So iconic that the Sharps rifle is now called a "Quigley Rifle" and US SEAL teams call any shot that requires two people a "Quigley." Not one of the best movies ever, but a fun romp all the same...)
RIPD (technically not a western, but Roy, for whom this character is named, makes it as close as one can get given the hodge-podge of tropes involved. I honestly love this movie just for the subtle comedy. If you have never watched it...well you should but I take no responsibility for any mental harm done to you, LOL)

-The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.  (What a showdown!  And the soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission.)
-The Unforgiven.  (Not much to say about it.  Simply great.)
-The Magnificent Seven.  ("Faster!  Faster!") (I'm also a big fan of Seven Samurai, and many other Kurosawa films.)

No time to answer... with players all around the world it's worth waiting at least 24 hours before getting upset that nobody has answered.

Jonas has bedding in the chuck wagon and 3 horses. Two of them are more used to pulling it, but can be ridden if necessary. This will meet all of Franklin's needs... if he hasn't actually gone yet.

Re: Off Topic (OOC)

Greetings folks, I have a question for the hive mind!

I have been developing a rules system for RP games set in the age of sail and musket, from basically the 1600's up until around the American Civil War.  I am currently detailing rules for a naval based game set around 1800-1815, think Hornblower, Master & Commander, Hollywood pirate movies etc and I need some price lists for characters equipment, weapons, clothing, supplies etc  For most other time periods there is usually an existing game that offers this info but I am not familiar with and RPG's set in this 'Napoleonic Era'.

Do any of you know of a game or other source for this kind of thing?

Thanks for your time :)

Re: Off Topic (OOC)

There's a game called Privateers and Gentlemen, set in the appropriate period. There's also a GURPS 3e supplement called Age of Napoleon which has a lot of useful resources.

You might also like to look at Privateers and Pirates and Pirates of the Spanish Main, which are a little bit earlier but might help.

For reading matter, try Dudley Pope's "Ramage" series, and Alexander Kent's "Bolitho" series as well as "Hornblower" and the "Master and Commander" stuff.

This is just scratching at the surface, it's a period I enjoy as well.

Re: Off Topic (OOC)

I would suggest an RPG called "Beat to Quarters", but Jonas' picks are good too.

TBH, even when I play another game, GURPS supplements always come in handy.

Another thing I use a lot are the old Writers' Digest series of references for authors. There's an okay one for the Colonial period, and a couple of downright great ones for the 1800s. This would include the prices you're looking for.

I also have an encyclopedia of New England history, but it weighs a lot, and might be overkill for the stuff you want.

Re: Off Topic (OOC)

In reply to Rufus Wentworth (msg # 113):

We're still alive.

We're waiting for Jonas to post, and then for the Judge to tell us what the sheriff has planned (it may take a day or two). I'm looking forward to this next scenario because we have the opportunity to plan in advance. Hopefully the sheriff will give us a basic outline of what to expect (guarding the lockup) and provide us with rifles. From the description in the wiki, he has five Civil War era rifles, but no shotguns. We also have our pistols.

Reloading
---------
Reloading can be an issue. It takes 6 seconds (1 turn) PER BULLET to reload a rifle, so 7 bullets = 42 seconds (7 turns). The Cap & Ball revolver is even slower 18 seconds per bullet, so a full reload takes 18*6 = 108 seconds (18 turns). Reloading in the middle of a gunfight is not an option, so we have to make every shot count.

Weapon Range (yards)
------------
                       Short Long Extreme Reload Speed
Cap & Ball Revolver(6) 10 20 60 1/3 Fast(+1)
Civil War Rifle(7) 30 100 500 1 Very Slow(-2)

Point blank range is 2 yards or less for any type of weapon.

Accuracy
--------
Base Accuracy = Coordination + Weapon Skill (eg. 17 + 1 rifle = 18)

Modifiers:
Pistols have +4 accuracy at PB range, Rifles get -2 penalty
Short Range, no modifier
Long Range -2
Extreme Range -5

Target obscured -2
Darkness/Night -4

There are other modifiers (see the "Combat Resolution" thread), but these I think are the most important.

Visibility
----------
On a cloudy, moonless night, visibility equals the character’s Observation score.
Under the stars and a crescent moon, visibility is twice the character’s Observation score.
Under the full moon, visibility is three times the character’s Observation score.
If the target is standing near a light source (campfire, lantern), visibility is not reduced at all.

Surprise
--------
A character firing from complete darkness, unless he was previously spotted or is being chased, always has complete surprise.

=============

I'm going to wait and see what the sheriff expects from us, but then we'll need to come up with a plan.

Can we set traps? I believe the Trading Post has some wolf traps, not sure if these will work against horses, assuming we know what directing they're approaching from. Jonas has some experience with explosives, but don't know if he's carrying any. The Trading Post has a keg of Black Powder for $5, if we can figure out a use for it.

I'm open to suggestions. There are only 5 of us and we don't know how many of them, we need to find a way to turn the odds in our favour.

In reply to Rufus Wentworth (msg # 115):

I think Gil has a rifle, and the sheriff has 5 on the rack behind his desk, so at best it's likely to be one each. I'm not sure, but I assume the Sheriff is joining the action (after all, they're his prisoners).

So that's six of us vs "up to a dozen of them".

Re: Off Topic (OOC)

I've been studying the map and have a few ideas, but nothing set in stone.

Map Link: https://www.alphadawn.net/boothill/jailbreak.jpg

Assumptions:

  - Each square on the map is 6ft or 2 yards (confirmed with GM)
  - The shops are all closed, including the Trading Post, so we can't purchase traps or explosives (confirmed).
  - There is enough space to have maximum two people shooting through each window (not confirmed).
  - The bandits know their friend are in the lockup and could approach from any direction, or more than one direction.
  - I'm expecting 10-12 bandits, so we're outnumbered 2-1.

Information Provided:

1. The lockup is the square building north of the sheriff's office.

2. We need to take up positions where we "can watch the main street and the lockup".

3. Stay in pairs for safety.

4. We can hide in the Sheriff's office
 - The Sheriff will watch the lockup from the back door of his office (will this be open?)
 - The Office has two windows overlooking the main street.
 - A third window overlooks the lockup.

5. We can hide in the lockup.
 - The prisoners are currently in the lockup.
 - The door is locked with a heavy padlock, but there is a narrow covered slot through which meals are passed to the prisoners.
 - The window is barred.

6. We can hide in the stables.
 - The stables have a loft, but I can't see any doors or windows on the map.

Suggestions:

The Sheriff's Office seems to have the best views of the lockup and the main street, and we'll need to cover both front and back (so they can't sneak up behind us and shoot through the windows).

We could put someone in the lockup (at least two), but if the door is locked, the barred window is the only place to shoot from (unless they break down the door). Visual range from the lockup is somewhat restricted by the toilets outside, and I don't think we can break those down (can we?). The prisoners will need to be bound and gagged. If we move them somewhere else (stable loft perhaps?) we'd need to post a guard, so keeping them tied up in the lockup with two of us there, seems like the best option.

This will be a night fight, with limited visibility and potential penalties to accuracy. If we could light up the "kill zone" somehow, but keep the sheriff's office and lockup in relative darkness, it would give us a massive advantage. It might also alert them to our presence, and we don't want them throwing torches or burning logs through the windows. Maybe if the  High Pass Hotel and La Loma Alta Saloon could keep their lights on overnight, it would help the situation.

I've placed icons for each of us on the map (see link above), but if anyone has a preference, we can easily change positions. Is suggest at least one PC in each area to control the action. Putting someone in the stable is also an option, but I can't see where the doors and windows are located.

That's all I have for now, any and all suggestions welcome.

@Rufus. I can't reply (IC) as Celeb went off to the stables to see if it had any doors or windows to shoot from. I was keen on the idea of traps, but the Trading Post is closed (they're also quite expensive, bear traps $6-$11.75 each).

I'm losing track of where we all are. Are you still in the sheriff's office?

Been thinking about moving the prisoners, they might be easier to defend if we moved them to the sheriff's office and chained them up to the rifle rank or something.

I’m confused about the rooms. £35 is fine, I have that. But you said one room, double bed and there are four of us. I guess we could put two in the hotel and two at the camp/wagon, or try at La Loma.

Where are you going to get the second bed?

I think it might be a good idea for everyone to read through the previous chapter, there are a couple of clues there about potential plot lines/happenings in town.  The day before (actually the day of) the jailbreak attempt there was an influx of people into town, which is why the hotel only has one room and the town has a lot more people in and around it, including the tent town springing up around your camp site.

"I only have one room available, a dollar and 25 cents per person per night."  Webster says to Caleb.  "Money up front."

  "That's be eight dollars and seventy five cents each, thirty five dollars for four people for seven nights."  Webster holds out his hand for payment.  "The rooms have one double bed each."

It’s these two statements that have confused me. If there is only one room, and it’s a double bed, why is he asking fir $35?

Are you familiar with the concept of demand and supply?  There are less rooms and beds available than the current demand.  The rooms only have one bed but you want a room for 4 people, so two can sleep in the bed, the others are on the floor if you want to squeeze 4 people into a room designed for only 2 people.

Re: Off Topic (OOC)

Does sleeping in the floor count towards the recovery, or would we be as well off sleeping under the wagon in a comfortable bedroll (with an extra $17.50 in our pockets)? Or we could take the double for two weeks and switch occupants half way through.

I’m not quite clear what benefit the hotel floor has over the chuck wagon.

I am hoping to be able to use Sally as a way to tie in a couple of other ideas however t loos like we may have another new character also joining the game but I won't be waiting for them, at this stage just Sally.  She is currently having a discussion in the Trading Post (none of the other characters are present at this time) that will hopefully lead to an introduction.

Re: Off Topic (OOC)

Almost dead, sorry to be so late coming here today... last night, 7:45 pm, dearly beloved fell over. Spent the entire night trying to get him upright, finally managed to get him to admit defeat at about 4:30 am and he let me call an ambulance. Took about aan hour and a half to come, but they were able to help him up with a brilliant device, an airbag they put under his butt and which inflated until it was about chair height and he could stand from there.

He didn't hurt himself at all, he just could not get up.

Now looking into maybe getting one of these lifting devices. It's called a Mangar Elk and the cheapest I can find one is £600. Thinking about getting one. He fell over last month too but managed to get up again.

Supposed to be working today but went to bed and slept all morning. Then got up in time to give 4 supervisions & write 2 weeknotes, then flaked out with a coffee and a muffin. Dearly beloved got up then had a coffee and a ham & egg mayo bun and has vanished again.

I aim on making some fish and chips - apart from the muffin hadn't eaten in over 24 hours - & will then go to bed.

Re: Off Topic (OOC)

When I first started using RPoL the first game a ran here was a home-brewed game based on my favorite series of novels.  I made many mistakes.  I didn't understand how to get the most out of the Game Wiki or how write any code for automating dice rolls etc.  I didn't always communicate clearly with players and the game system was constantly being tweaked.  The game started out strongly and over time players came and went until eventually it faded to a halt.  I'd like to think things have improved since then.  I have run quite a few games here now and have 4 active, regular games with stable playing groups.

The Lost Regiment is still my favorite campaign to referee and I am much happier with the game mechanics now, the rule set has been play tested in a number of different scenarios and seems to work well, I just need to get better at running games and managing players :)

With a few years experience on RPoL under my belt now I'd like to try and restart this game and invite old players and new players to come and join the action.  Whilst there are many opportunities for role playing in this game, once the campaign really gets going there is a big focus on combat.  Players begin the game as privates in the Union Army but over time they have the opportunity to get promoted and take command of larger and larger formations?

Each player will have their own solo thread for solo play (something I should have done long ago) and there will also be opportunities for players of a similar activity level to work together in joint story adventures/threads.  All depending on the preferences of the players.

For more info on the campaign back ground, character generation and game mechanics, feel free to visit the site and if this sounds like the kind of game you might be interested in, please send an RTJ.

`````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Characters for The Lost Regiment are members of the 35th Maine regiment, the 44th New York Light Artillery, sailors from the "Ogunquit" or nurses from the Christian Sanitation Commission.  Their birthplace, language and background should reflect this.
There are no Native American or African American members of any of these units however there may be a small number of immigrants from Europe.
Over the course of the campaign, players will have the opportunity to generate additional characters from the new civilizations their Yankee characters discover.  Rus, Roum and Chin characters allow players to explore multiple cultures and character options.
May I ask what you mean by "run in the manner you describe holds no appeal whatsoever"?  Obviously players have preferences about the kinds of games they like to play and won't go for just any game, so I am curious about what turns you off about that kind of game or what might be required to peak your interest?
Re: Off Topic (OOC)
It's the "big focus on combat" that puts me off. I prefer it when combat has a lesser place and only occurs when absolutely necessary. So a game based on soldiers in wartime is probably not a good fit for me. I suppose I could play a relatively non-combatabt character, a padre or a medic perhaps...
It's not a comment on your game running by any means. I'm enjoying playing in this game - exploring, prospecting, making a life in the Old West, great fun. Yes, sometimes people there got into brawls and shoot-outs, they didn't call it the "Wild West" for nothing. But a lot of people stepped away when that happened, we've all seen the movie trope of people pulling their kids off the boardwalk in front of their house and slamming the door when the fellows in black hats ride into town!
Re: Off Topic (OOC)
OK that makes sense, thanks for taking the time to respond.  Yes this game is largely combat focused so players who are into war gaming or the combat side of RPG's should enjoy this game during the War time phases of the game.  There are occasional scenarios more about politics, trade, science, medicine and engineering (later in the games we get a bit of almost steam-punk influence) which sounds like more of the aspects you would prefer.
Would you be interested in a non-combat style of character that has cameo appearance rather than a regular soldier type?
In reply to Jake (msg # 199):
  And all too often the work required to make the maps is taken for granted.  I do not use grid references in any of my games and I am not about to start now.  Most seem to forget that in face to face gaming it is up to the players to draw their own maps, the DM does not provide them.  Yeah, old school :)
  If players cannot write descriptions using landmarks and directions (north, south, east, west.  Left and right is relative and confusing) then perhaps play by post is not for them.  This is not a computer/video game where imagination has been subsumed by a game developer.  Play by post is about actual role playing and descriptive writing.
On that we agree...
I always used to be the party mapper, 'cos I like maps and could do them on the fly.
I remember my monk character, who literally used a brush and a block of ink, Chinese-style. Made for some interesting maps. This long before Oriental settings had been invented, but he was played as Chinese and often baffled by the 'European mediaeval' style setting of the game. Haven't thought about Vanitas Brother Amor, the Passionate Monk, also known as Jeng Jung (Chinese, roughly translates as 'Justice, the Middle Way' - aka Lawful Neutral!), for a long time.
It's set on the backdrop of the Mexican-American war and will have some supernatural elements to it as well. I've made a few changes to Sally so she fits the theme better and plan to continue her over there. If anyone is interested here's the link.
