Next Stop, Mad Mesa (IC)
(IC)
The train rattled West along the Western & Pacific Railway line, there was only one more stop, the end of the line.  Mad Mesa, Cochise County.  This was as close as the railway line got to El Dorado County and Promise City from the East.  On the other side of El Dorado County, over in Blume County, the National Railway line ended at Brewster.
Linking the County's was the Lincoln Trail, from Brewster, to Promise City to Mad Mesa.  No railway yet, but one day it would come, as sure as the sun rises in the East and sets in the West.  Until then, El Dorado County was railroad free.  The horse and the buckboard are the only real mode of travel and with only $5 in your pocket and revolver on your hip you were going to need some kind of job real soon.
"Tickets please."  The conductor called as he worked his way down the aisle, collecting tickets, punching holes and handing back the tickets to the passengers.

She had a moment of panic when the ticket was not in her waistcoat pocket, but then remembered she had moved it to her jeans pocket on the station when she spotted someone who looked like a pick pocket.

She gave the conductor a crooked grin as she pulled it out and passed it over for clipping.

"How much longer?" she asked.

"Couple more hours missy."  The conductor replied  "All depending..."  he mumbled as he moved on up the aisle to the next passenger.

Artemis sat by the window watching absently as the plains rolled by outside.  Kansas City had been a bust and she lost almost everything.  She still had Franklinís tags and her wedding ring, both a chain around her neck and hidden away, and a pistol.  That was something.  She was curious as well when the other woman asked how long, and nodded with acceptance the answer.  When the conductor came around and she gave him her ticket without a word.  She was going to have to find some money in Mad Mesa if she was going to get to California, she thought looking forward now and pondering her limited options.

Marc Fallon was making his way west once again, handing over his ticket when it was required. During the war he had attained the rank of Brevet Major, now he was just a man of 38 years travelling west with others. Having nothing more than the clothes on his back, several weapons and a couple of dollars his future was before him. Mad Mesa was his next stop.
