Re: The True Threat

The presence of a horse-sized white-scaled lizard with bat-like wings is all too apparent. It apparently realized it has been noticed and say, in a voice like creaking ice "'They will come bearing light, but not heat.' Yes...." It sounds like it's reciting something. "'Yet, darkness, too, rides with them.' Thus does the Prophecy unfold. Welcome, my new servants."

It begins to move toward the party, but not before Rottimer has something to say about it!

Re: The True Threat

Rottimers instincts went into overdrive as soon as he saw the massive beast flex its muscles and prepare to move. Scanning the room, Rottimer saw the creature in some cover to the left across a sheet of ice. Avoiding the ice, Rottimer moved quickly toward the opposite pillar hoping to eventually flank the creature and shouted "Don't bunch up! Keep your distance and don't let it catch you with its breath!"

Rottimer fired a shot, hoping to put the creature off balance then proceeded toward the eastern pillar keeping the western pillar between himself and the creature as it moved.

Minor Action: Aspect of the Regal Lion +2 to hit/+2 DEF vs. large
Free Action: Shout a warning to spread out so breath weapon will have fewer targets.
Move action: Move toward eastern pillar, probably won't get all the way there till next turn but hopefully at least out of breath weapon range.
Standard Action: Disruptive Shot vs Lizard w/ Cunning Stalker Active (CA) HIT for 15 Damage and Dazed (save ends)

Rottimer Lind rolled 31 using 1d20+13.  Disruptive Shot vs. Lizard with cunning stalker and AotRL (+4).

Re: The True Threat

The dragon, for it is undeniably such, screeches at the injury Rottimer has inflicted. It pulls out the shaft and walks effortlessly out over the ice toward the archer's allies. "The Prophecy, aah, too, is painful, to the uninitiated."

It gazes over the members of the party with eyes like crystalized malice and hisses out one word at them.

It is a seemingly innocuous word in the Common tongue, but to each of the four it has a deeply significant meaning that this dragon should have no way of knowing. It shakes them to their core.

"There. You see. The power of the Draconic Prophecy is indisputable. I, Szartharrax, will profess to you."

Szartharrax:

Re: The True Threat

Rottimer heard the "word" issue forth from the Dragon, his soul chilled but he was able to push through. Shaking off the intense sense of fear, Rottimer saw the creature move out onto the ice, much too close for comfort. Rottimer quickly nocked another arrow and fired low hoping to kneecap the creature and put it on its belly, hopefully keeping it from getting within reach of his friends before they could get out of the way. The arrow whistled to its target knocking the Dragon off its feet. Then Rottimer moved quickly around the eastern pillar to the north end of the room, putting as much distance as possible between himself and the beast. Then, he shouted, "I missed the part of the prophecy where you land on your face." With a smug look of satisfaction, Rottimer braced for retaliation.

Standard Action: Clever Shot: Hit: 13dmg+prone

Re: The True Threat

The dragon appears to ignore Rottimer's words and instead spends a moment peering at the ice beneath it, as if reading something there. Then it closes its eyes, nods, and turns to the three who are still coping with whatever truth they just absorbed. It makes a sound like a sigh of contentment, but from its jaws is emitted a wave of hellish cold. It envelops the warriors and the inventive holy man. It proves too much for Frug, who collapses.

Then it whips around, finds Rottimer, and crawls toward him. Its sinuous neck is ready to strike at the ranger. "'Pain and humility; these shall be the doorway.'" it intones. "I have pondered these words. It may be that they refer to one of us - or both."

Re: The True Threat

Froodle is awestruck by the power of this creature. He has never seen such power in a single animal before. He begins to wonder whether the bone mask is truly a trophy representing a worthy adversary, surely this creature surpasses all that he has vanquished before.

He knows he is a long way from claiming any prize though, as the mighty beast, even though knocked prone by Rottimer still inflicts great injury to his allies.

This creature is also out of reach. Froodle feels weak holding his weapon, while his attempts at rushing forward are hindered by a feeling of extreme sluggishness – surely the blood on his armour from vanquished foes could not have dried in the joints yet?

He moves forward to the edge of the ice, moving north towards the pillar where Rottimer is taking cover, then steels himself for the coming fight, digging deep into his resolve.

Move:  Move North towards Rottimer, reaching the edge of the ice (move restricted to 2)
Standard: use Second wind

For -2 to attack rolled a 2, effect remains
For slowed and weakened rolled a 3, effects remain

Re: The True Threat

FLAWED is the word that Frug heard. So many of his creations were not what they could’ve been while he was an apprentice and Geodesic was useless in the last battle. Multiple paths to study creativity and nothing but flawed mechanisms. All of this was going through his mind when the cold hit. It hit hard and knocked Frug out, but he is holding on.

Frug rolled 6 using 1d20.  Save versus weakened and slowed.

Re: The True Threat

Drake hears the deep base resonating  tone of the Dragon speaking his tongue. WEAKNESS is the word that echoes through him seeming to enter his body via his scaley skin and reverberate throughout his tissues. It stops Drake in his tracks and transports him to his worst nightmare …. When he was stuck in his egg. Weakness seems to pervade along his limbs as he recalls the feeling of helplessness as he first became sentient, but was too weak to break through his shell, knowing that he was cramped in the small space but too weak to break out, seemingly trapped for eternity straining and struggling but unable to make headway. The vision was so strong Drake bent over as if still in the egg restricting his movement. It was at that moment that Drake vowed to himself to never feel weak again hence his determination to be strong and to work on being strong, so he would never feel as weak and helpless again.

Drake starts to become aware of his surroundings again and witnesses the ravaged body of Frug following the dragons devastating attack.

He reaches out and lays his hand on Frug invoking the healing power of Bahamut spending a healing surge and allowing Frug to benefit watching his broken body regain its natural shape and the frost burnt wounds mend.

His thoughts turns to his own weakness and he focuses the healing powers within himself using his second wind and spends another healing surge but this time on himself feeling his wounds heal and the additional benefit of the defences encapsulate him. This return towards normality allows his Dragon fury to subside.

Again an invocation to Bahamut assist Frug in shaking off his weakened and slowed state.

Lastly seeing the ease with which the dragon commands cold … Drake decides to command the frost sword to only cause normal damage

Minor: Lay on hands to Frug expending Drakes healing surge . frug returns to 0 hp + his own healing surge value of HP

Standard: Second wind Drake expends a healing surge

Minor: Divine Metal allowing Frug +4 bonus on a saving throw

Free: switches the damage on the Frost Longsword to normal

Saving throw -2 attack 1D20 V DC 10 = 15 SUCCESS

Saving throw re weakened and slowed 1D20 V DC 10 = 20 critical SUCCESS

Re: The True Threat

Rottimer felt a surge of excitement as he saw the creature awkwardly rotate toward him on its belly. He had succeeded in diverting its attention from his desperate allies. Thinking of those allies, Rottimer peered through the frosty mist to see Drake shaking off the effects of the Dragon's speech. As Drake moved to help Frug, Rottimer started looking for a more advantageous position. He spotted an area of the room to the west that would put the western pillar between himself and icy death. But before he moved, he drew his bow and turned, taking aim once again at the creatures lower extremities in hopes of slowing it even further. If Rottimer could keep it from engaging his friends, it would give them time to regroup and initiate a proper assault. Rottimer shouted encouragement to Drake and the team, "Ok, I'll try to slow it down, everyone get ready!" Rottimer released his arrow and moved without looking back. As he moved to the western side of the room with an interposing pillar blocking his line of site to the target, he heard his arrow hit the mark and he knew that it would do the job. Now, it was up to his team.

Re: The True Threat

The dragon heaves itself up onto its feet. It sees Froodle about to cross the ice and it exhales. It's merely another sigh, but this time without the blast of cold. Still, it seems to be capable of another such attack at any time.

It creeps across the ice to put its back to the pillar that is providing cover for Rottimer. "Have a care with the markings," it hisses at Froodle. Froodle (and anyone else) can see, trapped with in the ice, delicate traceries that are clearly meaningful symbols, though not in any language any of them can read. These catch the light, reflecting and refracting it into unlikely spectra.

Waking up to the warmth of the divine energy Drake shared, Frug weakly pulls himself from the ground. He pulls the cirri tube enfusion that he had prepared for helping a friend and makes the hard choice to heal himself. Catching a second wind, Frug regains his strength. The darned dragon and everything is still a bit fuzzy, but it’s still a time to get creative. I may be flawed, but I am working on those flaws and that improvement is what I need. Grateful nod to Drake as he picks up his staff.

Standard: second wind for healing surge and +2 to all defenses

Re: The True Threat

Drake is suspicious of the markings in the ice and although he speaks and can read Draconic they are not symbols he recognises. He is also suspicious of the Dragons movement as it appears the dragon wants him to step onto the ice. He is aware of the capabilities of Rottimer and Frug and believes the best course of action is to give them a chance to attack unfettered.

Drake looks at the gorgeous Frost Longsword and realises this is not the weapon to try and tackle the dragon with due to its affiliation with frost. Cold nervous sweat drips down the back of his armour at what he is about to do. Drake moves North and West to the edge of the ice patch but doesn’t step onto the ice he shouts ‘I Drake challenge you by Bahamut’  Devine  challenging the Dragon.

Drake digs deep and spits forth his Dragon breath attack of Fire  against the frost dragon the fiery liquid hits the dragon,  mostly landing around the dragon but it does scorch its foreleg

Drake moves  to behind the East  pillar placing it between himself and the dragon awaiting the sobering attack to come.

Move: Moves North West to the edge of the ice patch

Minor action: Divine challenge Dragon

Minor action: Dragon Breath Close Blast 3  Strength+2 v Reflex

Re: The True Threat

Rottimer saw things beginning to take shape. His allies had slowly and methodically taken positions to east, south east, and west. All while Rottimer mostly kept the Dragon off balance and in the middle of the room. There was a position open to the southwest and Rottimer wanted to be in it. If he could space himself apart from his allies, he could avoid giving the dragon the chance to hit multiple targets with its breath weapon. And if the Dragon was angry enough to give chase, it would have to move past Froodle. That's if it could even stand. Rottimer made a break for the southwest corner of the room, putting as much distance between himself and the dragon as he could. As he got there, he loosed yet another arrow at the creatures hind quarters and shouted to his friends, "Look lively men, be ready to strike!" The arrow hissed through the frigid air and found its mark with an audible thump as the Dragon once again fell prone on the ice.

Move: To Southwest corner of room.

Re: The True Threat

The dragon rises again to its feet. In Draconic it says:

Spoiler for Draconic: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
I tire of this.

Then it unfurls its wings and leaps into the air. It lands on the far side of Froodle, then bares its toothy maw and charges straight for Rottimer. It bellows as it runs, atthe  radiant spikes scouring its hide. The jaws clamp shut on empty air, Rottimer having proven too fast, but the archer feels a wave of cold that tells him what he would have been in for had the dragon been faster.

Froodle is up.

Szartharrax:

Re: The True Threat

Froodle is set, ready to advance and attack the dragon, albeit still with legs that barely move. Then he sees a wonderous sight, though dragonborn himself he has rarely seen a dragon actually fly. As the dragon mocks them in his own tongue and flies over Froodle, beyond his reach, he stands open mouthed and gawping.

The dragon’s aim is off though as it dive bombs down towards Rottimer, an opportunity has presented itself and Froodle is not about to let it pass. He turns and moves forward to the dragon’s back, the size of the room meaning he is able, despite his restricted movement, to get within reach with his battleaxe, flanking the creature with Rottimer on the other side.

His arm feels weak, so he goes for power over accuracy to do as much damage as he still can, cleaving at the dragon scales before him.

Move: move south to a position that flanks the dragon with Rottimer
Standard: Cleave with battleaxe

Froodle rolls 17 using d20+9 with combat advantage Cleave vs AC of 17 HIT!
Froodle rolls 13 damage on d10+4, hitting for a weakened 6 points of damage

Froodle will not issue a combat challenge at this stage – leaving the divine challenge from Drake in place.

Saving throw vs slowed and weakened – Froodle rolled a 6!

Frug shakes his head and his vision clears up a bit, just in time to see Rottimer get cornered by the dragon. I’m going to bring the thunder to this ice beast, Frig thinks to himself and moves to the north west to get in range of Rottimer.
Snapping his staff in a quick motion, Frug sends thunder out to Rottimer. The thundering enhances Rottimer’s armor and bursts out at the dragon. It misses

Move: three squares west and two squares north.

Re: The True Threat

Drake is awed by the majesty of witnessing the Dragon fly the ease of movement in the air but felt cheated that he couldn’t witness a longer flight. The cold down draught from the dragon cleared his thoughts as he witnessed Szartharrax corner Rottimer. Not a position he hoped they’d be in, but felt pride at the group quickly moving tactically to engage the dragon. ‘Careful Rottimer’ he shouts in encouragement.

Drake moved from around the pillar well aware that his earlier protections had left him. Moving south, south west, and then west places him with a wall of Dragon flank ahead of him.

‘Aaaagggghhhhh’ shouts Drake as he charges forward with his Frost Longsword held high ready to strike, timing is everything and just as he reaches the dragon he times it perfectly the adrenaline surging fire through his veins placing all his strength behind the attack. The Frost longsword finds its mark biting into the dragons hide, but not as deeply as Drake hoped with such a perfect strike.

Move Action: moves south one then southwest two then west 2

Re: The True Threat

As Rottimer reached the corner and what he thought was relative safety, he turned to look at the dragon he had just fled only to see it heave up into the air and take wing after him. The words "A little help!" could be heard escaping his lips. And no sooner than they did, his allies leapt into action. Following the dragon and coming to Rottimer's aid. Before he could even decide which way to run, Froodle, even with ice coated armor was behind the dragon and Drake was just behind. Frug sent some sort of shock wave through Rottimer and he felt a surge of power. Using that as momentum, Rottimer bolts out of the corner to the north and makes for the pillar hoping for some cover. Then turns and fires, hoping to keep this massive creature on the ground where his allies can engage it. The arrow travels swiftly and sinks into the dragons hide, once again putting it on its belly. Rottimer quickly draws another arrow in case it tries to get up.

Re: The True Threat

When the paladin arrives, Szartharrax's neck whips around to take in this new development, and that's when Rottimer makes his move.

Or tries to.

Quick as crack spreading through the ice of a pond, the dragon strikes at the hunter. Cold clutches at Rottimer's very soul, hoarfrost threatening to cloud his eyes, but he powers through, and brings the dragon to its knees again, as holy power spears down.

The dragon, riled now, growls at its attackers, ice forming in the air around its nostrils.

Re: The True Threat

Szartharrax glances at Drake and Froodle. "Surely you see that there can be no coincidence in two dragonkin finding me. Once you are my servants, one can prove their strength and loyalty by killing the other. But first another lesson." And with that it releases a torrent of killing cold. The stream of it splashes directly into Froodle, resolidifying the icy bonds he had almost broken.

Then, as if daring Rottimer to strike, it stands once more.

Rottimer sees the Dragon breathe out an icy blast before standing almost as if it read his mind. What kind of hellbeast could so perfectly anticipate his every thought!? For that it must be killed. Rottimer released his arrow with perfect placement and timing, aiming at the heart of the creature. The arrow disappears within its scaly hide causing it to once again lose its balance drunkenly falling to the floor.

Re: The True Threat

This is your DM: The following post was overcome by an action, the dragon's bloodied breath that allows an immediate use of its breath weapon, that changed the options for the player. I'm retaining the text, but don't operate from it, please.

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)

Froodle feels the blast of icy breath strike him again, being so close to the dragon he took the full effect of the blast, reaffirming his feeling of weakness and, somehow, sluggishness in his movement. He hadn't managed to shake of the effects of the first blast yet and wondered now whether he would regain his strength and movement before he or the dragon fell.

Despite being adjacent to the dragon, he felt the need for healing and protection to be greater than swinging the battleaxe with his weakened arm.

He stood firm, took a deep breath and set himself against the next attack. As he did so, he felt his muscles loosen and the strength return throughout his body. He was truly refreshed, if still bloodied.

Standard: Use second wind (healing surge and +2 all defences until start of next turn)

Saving throw vs slowed and weakened Froodle rolled 18 SUCCESS (AT LAST)!

Room: Roughly 12 squares north-south by 12 squares east-west. 30 foot ceiling.
Ice: 6 squares north-south by 4 squares east-west. Difficult terrain. At least 2 squares from every wall, but adjacent to two pillars.
Pillars: One east of ice patch (1x2), one west (2x2), across from each other.

Rottimer: (6/22; 17(19)+1/12(14)/17(19)/13(15)) 4N of dragon, adjacent to west side of western pillar. Bloodied

Froodle: (17/34; 19(21)/16(18)/14(16)/11(13)) Southeast area of room, adjacent to Szartharrax and Drake. BLOODIED

Drake: (24/27; 20/16/11/15) Adjacent to Szartharrax I think four squares east of SW corner and three squares North engaged with Szartharrax. Divine challenge on Szartharrax.
