Re: Sludge Pit

Drake is quick off the mark, ready to act, he smirks to himself at the description of rats, how fitting.

He readies to engage the kobold, pulling out his hand Crossbow.

Re: Sludge Pit

The kobold ganger is wearing leather armor, daubed with white paint. He's confident and gleeful about his target-rich environment. Not all kobolds are as nasty as this one, but this one decides to pick on the gnome. He thwaps Frug with a stone and snarls.

What is Drake going to do about this affront?

Kobold slinger, white paint:
Standard action: 21:33, Today: DM Paul, for the NPC Slinger, rolled 19 using 1d20+5.  Sling +5 vs. AC 15 of Frug. Hit. (And its +6, not +5, oops).

Re: Sludge Pit

Drake Bellows in Draconic ‘By Bahamut you will engage me rat’ challenging the Kobold

He raises his hand crossbow and snaps a shot at the Kobold, but the bolt flies well wide striking the wall behind it.

He reloads the hand crossbow and advances carefully around the left side of the pit using the alcove to advance. Closing as far as he can upon the Kobold. Drake feels the weight of his armour and shield as he does so knowing that although a leap would have been bold and brave, it would have been foolish.

——————————

Minor action Divine challenge

Standard action missile attack 1d20+2 =8 Miss

Free action reload the crossbow

Move action - closes upon the Kobold to melee range if he can reach with his 5 speed movement (armour inhibits 6). Triggering any action from the other Kobold slinger if he reaches that point.

Re: Sludge Pit

As Drake reaches the corner of the pit, an object hurtles at him from the alcove to his right. It just misses him, smashing on the stone near him, and coating the floor with a liquid that solidifies almost instantly. Had it found its mark, Drake might have been rooted to the spot.

As Drake can now see, in the eastern alcove is another passage. A portcullis narrow enough to stop a human-sized creature, but no hindrance to one smaller. Down the hallway are two more gang members. One, wearing a leather cap sporting a floppy, white crest, has just used its sling to hurl a glue pot at him. Another, armed with a spear, and wearing tougher armor that looks like it's made from dogs, slips through the bars of the gate and moves up to Drake, jabbing at him. The weapon skids off the paladin's armor.

Another skirmisher, wearing armor made from lizard hides, moves out from behind the original slinger. He circles the pit via the alcove opposite the portcullis, and moves to flank the paladin.

Re: Sludge Pit

Rottimer sees Drake move into the room to the east, seemingly to skirt the trench and close with the Kobold on the far side. But suddenly the sound of rupturing clay comes out of nowhere and Rottimer realizes there are more enemies in the alcove to the east. They seem to be ganging up on Drake.

Rottimer moves into the room but towards the west wall. In hopes of getting a sight line on those in the alcove to the east engaged with Drake. As he gets into position, he sees 2 kobolds flanking his ally. With little time, he releases 2 arrows in quick succession, one on each side of Drake, at the hide wearing Skirmishers.

The first shot flew well wide and shattered against the wall. Rottimer was rushed. The second shot, he took more time and it found it's mark, wounding the one wearing lizard hide.

Re: Sludge Pit

“What’s up with me today?” grumbles Froodle, wondering why his reflexes seem so slow. “Ah well” he thinks, “at least I have seen what these creatures are up to”

With his battleaxe and shield to the front Froodle charges at the doghide skirmisher next to Drake, determined to push the kobold into the sludge pit. Alas, Froodle mistimes his run and he stops short in in his effort to see he doesn’t follow the pesky creature into the sludge.

With a further grumble and a thought of “If only these creatures would come near me” Froodle resigns himself to having to go toe to toe with the skirmisher still ahead of him by the pit.

Re: Sludge Pit

The painted slinger feels a tingle of the divine and sees Drake trying to make his way to deliver a sacrament in the hard way. Quick as a wink, it splashes a steaming liquid from a small skin into a clay pot, spits into the pot, and loads the pot into its sling.

This time, the concoction finds its mark. The pot smashes against Drake's greaves, and a pungent, oily liquid runs down his legs. When the first stream of it touches the ground, the entirety of the substance instantly hardens into gummy tendrils that will take some attention to work free from. Drake is held in place for the time being.

The crested slinger down the hallway tries to take advantage of this, sending a normal sling bullet in Drake's direction. The paladin seems impervious to damage, however.

What will Drake do about this?

Re: Sludge Pit

Drake is incredulous at these Gnats that need swatting and realises the sticky situation he’s now in.

Frustration seethes through him as the pots foul substance hardens around his greaves. He glare’s into the eyes of the Lizardhide skirmisher “You shall engage me vermin” he commands with the determination of Bahamut’s power flowing through him.

Drake drops his hand crossbow to the side  and unsheathes his longsword in the same motion he swings towards the Lizardhide skirmisher invoking Bahamuts name simultaneously, the sword flares into a bright light, crackling with Holy power.

The swing arc is short, due to the restriction of the hardening substance, and the sword glances off the hide armour of the skirmisher.

Drake is amazed that the swing wasn’t true and watches the flare fade from his sword
‘Perhaps my faith wasn’t strong enough, I must believe’ he thinks. He readjusts, taking account of the lack of mobility in his legs.

He again swings, having learnt of the effects of his limited  mobility from the first strike, again he invokes Bahamuts name this time picturing the shrines he has prayed at, doubling his belief, the sword flares with holy light which brightens the room chasing the shadows from the corners.
This time the sword hits true, biting deeply finding the unprotected gap in the lizard hide armour. Deep the blade sinks into the flesh of the Kobold and Drake watches the life drain from the kobolds eyes as it’s body crumples into a heap.

Drake focuses on freeing his legs, but his luck runs out and the smell of the Kobold spit distracts his efforts, his legs remain stuck.

Drake:
Drake focuses on freeing his legs, but his luck runs out and the smell of the Kobold spit distracts his efforts, his legs remain stuck.

Kobold spit is only one of the ingredients. The rest are way worse.

Things are happening so fast and Drake is so broad that the surviving skirmisher doesn't really seem to know that the tide has already turned against him. He jabs at Froodle, which is so effective it surprises even the gangers - including the skirmisher himself.

Apparently fearing the pit slightly more than he fears Froodle, the ganger darts to the side and away from the pit, trying to circle the fighter. Froodle doesn't have to stand for that.

While Froodle and the skirmisher work out their differences, what does Frug do?

Re: Sludge Pit

Froodle can’t believe the way his luck is going, slow to react, stopped short of pushing a piddly kobold into the pit, now the little rat is trying to move around him.

Perhaps by reflex rather than planning he reacts to the movement, making the most of the opportunity to attack the creature as it moves. His combat superiority finally shines through and he strikes the doghide skirmisher, piercing through with his axe blade. Though hurt and slowed to a single move, the doghide skirmisher remains adjacent to Froodle. At least the creature didn’t get behind him.

Opportunity attack – immediate interrupt triggered by shift.

In reply to Froodle (msg # 15):

Seeing the Doghide skirmisher with both Drake and Froodle fighting him, he knew it was time to invoke the blades. Looking at the trio, Frug uses his staff in sweeping motions of a sword swing and follows it by a series of shield blocks. Radiant blades attack Doghide skirmisher and transform into glowing shields around Drake and Froodle.

Re: Sludge Pit

Rottimer was pleased to see Drake finish off the lizardhide skirmisher. The one two punch of an arrow and Drake's mighty glowing sword was incredibly satisfying. But then things seemed to get hectic. Rottimer's head twitched back and forth as he followed the attacks, counter attacks and movement. The melee was getting intense and it looked like things were under control there. So Rottimer turned his attention to the kobolds harrassing his team with strange magics. The most exposed was to the north, and he was injured. Rottimer raised his bow slowly and took aim at the painted slinger. But he aimed low, at the legs, hoping to damage the Slinger and knock him off his feet.

The arrow flew true and made contact with the Kobolds knee, wounding him and putting him on the floor. If Rottimer couldn't kill the creature from here, perhaps he could disrupt his attacks until someone could close with him. After firing the shot, Rottimer inches forward along the west wall and peeks around the corner to the west, looking for more targets.

Re: Sludge Pit

This is more like it thinks Froodle, seeing Frug’s radiant blades cut into the doghide skirmisher before making shields around Froodle.

He nods at Frug, acknowledging the hit and with thanks for the boost in armour. A further nod to Rottimer, for putting the slinger at the end of the room on his knees, Froodle already eyeing him as his next victim. But first to finish the doghide skirmisher.

With a yell of pleasure at being in the midst of battle he swings his battleaxe, taking careful aim to be sure this time of hitting. Alas, his aim is still not true – was it something he ate at the market that is playing him up today?

Before the creature has a chance to react, Froodle uses an action point and takes careful aim again, this time he manages to land a blow, but it is weak and barely scratches the annoying ratlike creature. With a hint of annoyance he growls “I will have you foul creature”, maintaining his combat challenge.

Re: Sludge Pit

The slinger gets shakily to his feet. He appears to judge that merely locking his enemies in place is not going to help much of anything. He loads a normal stone this time and lets fly at Rottimer. The stone can be heard impacting somewhere in the room, but nowhere near the archer.

Perhaps hoping for as much good luck as the other had bad luck, the gang member behind the portcullis pitches another bullet and the solidly protected Drake. No such luck.

Re: Sludge Pit

Drake loves the purity of observing the team working together. The stone from the Creeted Slinger seemed to bounce off his armour without even making a mark, Drake nods to Frug for the magical support. Drake grins at Rottiner’s fine display of archery bringing the Painted Skirmisher to its knees. He is also pleased that Froodle took full advantage of the cowardly Dog Hide skirmisher as it tried to evade him.

But Drake is still stuck by the stinking goo around his greaves and feet. He will not be sidelined in a battle.

Drake sheathes his sword and picks up his hand crossbow, thanking the gods that he had the sense to reload it earlier.

Hmmm which one to attack, he ponders and takes aim at the Painted Skirmisher.

The shot goes wide again, but closer than his previous attempt, more practice required perhaps.

He again reloads the crossbow and then smashes his shield down on the hardening substance to break free. The plan works and he manages to scrape enough off the goo off with his shield to be able to move his feet. Free again to take on the vermin face to face.

Re: Sludge Pit

Rottimer was surprised that these little creatures were so hardy. He thought for sure their wounds would overcome them by now. The tide was beginning to turn, but Rottimer felt the need to further push the odds in their favor. He scanned the battle and saw Drake breaking free of his predicament. Hears that familiar crack of thunder from Frug. The doghide skirmisher would surely fall to Froodle soon. That left the Painted slinger who had been harrying them too long. He would be the next target. Rottimer takes careful aim and fires. The arrow found its mark, striking the painted slinger dead where he stood. The painted slinger would sling no more. Then with a great heave, Rottimer swung around and discharged a shaft toward the Doghide skirmisher hoping to knock him prone but the arrow just missed.

Froodle watches as the kobold slinger falls, then brings his gaze back to the doghide skirmisher in front of him. With a narrowing of his Dragonborn eyes he takes extra time to focus, this kobold looks beaten in front of him, it’s attack was weary and blood drips from it’s torso.

He raises his axe and watches as the blade comes down, this time his aim is true and he slices through the flimsy armour, then watches as the last lifeblood flows out of the pesky creature.

Stepping over the body he advances to the portcullis and breathes fire at the last remaining crested slinger through the holes scorching his armour and causing a squeal as the fire burns beneath it. "Now let's see what you are made of, come and fight me" he growls

Drake now free from the goo is pleased at the way things have turned and notes the bodies of the Skirmishers laying around.

One more to vanquish. Drake considers going for the portcullis and using his impressive strength to lift it. But that may leave him exposed, more practice with his crossbow perhaps is the order of the day.

He closes to the portcullis and fires at the mostly concealed Crested Skirmisher the bolt goes nowhere near the concealed crested slinger. Hmmm this is getting embarrassing

Re: Sludge Pit

Rottimer's eyes bulge as he soaks in the perfection that is Frugs avenging light. He has to shake his head to regain himself and remember what he was going to do. Hoping not to be completely outdone, he draws his bow with a studied technique he has trained with in order to better find small areas exposed by enemies in heavy cover. He spots a damaged stone in the wall, leaving a void just large enough to put an arrow through. He can just make out the shoulder of the creature taking cover on the other side. He takes a deep breath and releases. The arrow sails, seemingly in slow motion. Rottimer feared that it flew wide, but it just makes it through the gap, piercing the unsuspecting Kobold, who dies from an attack he never saw coming. Upon seeing the Slinger crumple to the ground, Rottimer relaxes, shakes out his shoulders and lowers his bow. He had become tense and needed to loosen up after that last shot.
