Skull-Skull!

This chamber looks like it was once a tomb, but the kobolds have transformed it into what you might almost call a playground.

Four stone coffins lie here, with a sludge-filled pit between them. On the opposite end of the room is a wooden double door. Flanking the double door are two raised platforms, both 10 feet above the floor. Two kobolds stand on each platform.

Arrayed on the coffins are several animal skulls, all of them arranged in small piles. One kobold holds a sludge drenched stone tied to a long rope that is secured in the ceiling.

Please roll initiative and then repost the status block with your line in the right position and your HP corrected.

17:00, Today: DM Paul, for the NPC Unseen creatures, rolled 14 using 1d20+7.  Initiative. (Actually 10, because I put in the wrong number).
17:02, Today: DM Paul, for the NPC Minions, rolled 13 using 1d20+3.  Initiative.
17:04, Today: DM Paul, for the NPC Slingers, rolled 23 using 1d20+3.  Initiative.

The stairs deposit you at the west end of the room.
The room is 8 squares NS by 10 squares EW.
In the middle is another sludge pit. It's 4x2 like the other one and oriented NS.
There are four coffins, arranged like in the other room, but with the sludge pit in their midst. Two coffins are on the west side, two are on the east.

It's a DC 19 Athletics check to climb up to the platforms, and takes 4 squares of movement. The platforms are separated by a 2 square section of wall that rises to the ceiling. At the base of this wall is a pair of double doors.

The stone hanging from the rope can potentially strike anyone more than 2 squares from the east or west walls.

Slingers: (24/24; 13/12/14/12) One on each platform.
Minions: (1/1; 15/11/13/11; +5, 4 damage) Four. One on each platform, two unseen.
Unseen creatures: Initiative 10
Froodle: (34/34; 19/16/14/11) At west wall.
Frug: (19/23; 15/12/14/14) At west wall.
Rottimer: (17/22; 17/12/17/13) At west wall.
Drake: (27/27; 20/16/11/15) At west wall.

Re: Skull-Skull!

The slingers both take out their namesake weapons. They hiss in Draconic

Spoiler for Draconic: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
"Stick the big ones," one of them says. "Agreed," says the other.
and let fly, one at Froodle and one at Drake. There are two almost simultaneous shattering sounds as the two warriors are both doused in the alchemical lacquer.

The slingers congratulate each other on their shots and the minions near them giggle nastily. One holds the stone pendulum, ready to release it. The other hunkers down.

Froodle is in a jam. What will he do? What can he do?

Re: Skull-Skull!

Rottimer sees the Kobolds slinging pots from an elevated position. He knows he can't kill them from here, but a cleverly placed arrow could probably cause some damage and knock them from the platform. With any luck the fall might hurt them even more. Drawing his bow, he launches an arrow toward the top of the north platform. It bites deep into the Slinger and causes him to twist and lose his balance lurching 2 squares over and......

Emboldened by the luck of his last shot, Rottimer launches another arrow at the stone holding Kobold next to the one he just shot. But this time, he takes careful aim to ensure better chances of connection.

Standard: Clever Shot at North Slinger HIT 14 DMG SLIDE 2 (attempting to knock off platform)

Re: Skull-Skull!

The injured slinger yelps as Rottimer's arrow somehow rebounds and nearly knocks it off its platform. It falls over, but not off, and starts struggling to get back up.

In response to the ganger's yelp, a muffled growl sounds from behind the double doors.

Re: Skull-Skull!

Froodle looks down at his feet wondering what this strange sticky substance is that is holding him back from charging at the kobolds.
He considers taking out his sling to return the favour, but the heavy shield would be too cumbersome to allow him to load it. For a moment the thought of taking the shield off his arm passes through his brain, but that moment is short lived, he’ll need it later.
So he uses his axe to chip away the sticky glue, removing it from his legs so he can move again.

Re: Skull-Skull!

Drake observes the scene and finds the playground interesting but notes what a disadvantage it puts our group in. He looks down at the stinky gooey hardening substance around his greaves yet again and wonders if he’ll ever get the stink off.

‘You will regret your actions vermin’  he bellows to the kobolds and adds ‘I’m going for the ugly ones on the platforms ‘ he informs his adventuring friends realising that thus far little coordination has occurred and most of the action has been instinctual.

Drake readies his hand crossbow and aims at the heavily wounded and bleeding north slinger, hoping to add to the damage that the others have wrought. Practice must have improved his aim as the bolt flies true striking the Skirmisher in the head causing it to fall straight to the deck like a fallen tree,  a lifeless heap.

Whilst reloading the crossbow he again contemplates escaping the goo and then smashes his shield down into the hardening substance managing to scrape off sufficient goo to release his feet. They may still stink vile but at least he’s free to close and reek havoc on the kobolds.

Re: Skull-Skull!

The remaining slinger hurls another glue pot at Drake. It thuds against his shield and drops to his feet. It looks like it might be a dud, but then it splits open, coating the paladin with goo.

The ganger is gone by this time though. The party can hear him scampering down stone steps at the back of the platform, while other footsteps scamper up. Another gang underling appears on the north platform to grab the rope for the stone pendulum, again ready to throw it. On the south platform, another minion joins the first and, emboldened by one another, they each fling a javelin at the party.

One causes enough trouble for Frug that the gnome instinctively becomes invisible. The minion cheers for a second, and then seem to reconsider whether this is a good thing. He slinks back from the edge of the platform to try to get some cover.

The other has only moved up far enough to see the party. He doesn't appear to like his options, but he settles on Rottimer. He throws his javelin - and it caroms off the edge of the platform, coming nowhere near the ranger.

How does Rottimer respond to this?

Re: Skull-Skull!

Rottimer tenses instinctively as the hurled javelin clatters off the floor. It was far wide of him, but the impact was jarring to his ears and echoed in the chamber. As the sound died, Rottimer noticed the little beast on the north platform was alone. Rottimer wouldn't forget his training this time. He quickly pulled an arrow from his quiver and focused on the single target above the party. Rottimer didn't know what the stone did, but he knew it must be something dangerous and he wanted to part it from the grasp of their enemies. With great care, Rottimer drew his bowstring to his cheek, slowed his breathing and released. The arrow flew with a hiss, directly toward the kobold, killing him where he stood.

Re: Skull-Skull!

Froodle was glad to have got himself free, but was now worried the enjoyment of battle was slipping away. Enemies were falling and he hadn’t even swung his axe near them yet.

Time to get involved he thought to himself, and on the hurry up! Whatever that strange stone did, he didn't want to risk another kobold getting hold of it - it looked heavy! He ran over to the southern wall and over to the ledge, skirting the sludge pit and coffins.

Once at the ledge he threw himself up, clambering onto the ledge, positioning himself between the two minions who had thrown their javelins and were now trying to take cover by staying back from the edge.

Not wanting the battle to pass him by, he swung his axe, cleaving through the 2 kobolds, their blood spurting out as they fell. His axe would need cleaning.

He also wonders what else lies down the steps where the slinger ran away.

Move: Run along south wall to base of south ledge
Move: Climb up ledge – Froodle rolled 20 with d20+9 using athletics skill against DC 19 to climb the top of the ledge
Action Point: Froodle rolls 17 on d20+7 using cleave on south minion 1
Froodle rolls 5 on d10+4 damage against south minion 1, also doing 4 points of damage to south minion 2, killing them both.

Re: Skull-Skull!

Drake grins at the devastation wrought by Froodle “Honour to you Froodle,’ ‘ This stuff reeks, I’ll never get that smell off my armour’ he announces to the group looking down in disgust at the goo around his feet.

Drake notes the covering actions of Frug and Rottimer and focuses solely on getting unstuck. Again using the same method as before he scrapes his shield along his greaves and pulls his feet from the goo which make a loud sucking noise as they free. Drake chuckles in a juvenile way at the sound.

Re: Skull-Skull!

The room falls somewhat quiet, until the skull-skull stone swings free from the limp hand of the dead ganger and smacks into the stack of skulls on one of the coffins. The surviving slinger doesn't reappear.

Drake can see stairs to the east leading down into darkness.

What will Rottimer do now?

Re: Skull-Skull!

Froodle stands atop the south platform, there are some stairs leading down, and certainly one scrawny kobold down there, but it is dark and who knows how many friends the little rat has.
Oh well, thinks Froodle, checking himself up and down for cuts and bruises and finding none, the effects of his running having also now worn off, I may be fine, but I can't see in the dark.

He calls over to Frug, Drake and Rottimer "He's down here somewhere, but it's all dark and I can't see him"

He then addresses the unseen kobold in draconic "come up here and fight me you coward" while readying his axe to met anything coming up the stairs.

Move: Retreat along the ledge to give enough space to allow a charge at any creature emerging from the steps.

Readied action: charge any kobold emerging from the top of the stairs

What comes up the stairs is reptilian, but it's not a kobold: a sinuous, red-green form lopes up the stairs. It opens its mouth to roar at Froodle, but Froodle is already charging it. It absorbs the impact and struggles with the fighter, but its teeth rasp on armor.

Drake observes the battle on top of the platform and seeks an easier way round. He notices the passageway between the two
Platforms and decides to investigate ‘There’s a possible way out this way’  upon further research he reaches the barred double doors. Re: Skull-Skull!

The doors splinter under the dragonborn's ministrations, revealing a wide hallway leading east into darkness. Immediately inside are stairs leading to the north platform. A scattering of gold coins are strewn on the stairs, perhaps the wagers from the game the gangers were playing. Further in is an alcove leading to the other set of stairs, the ones to the south platform.

There is also the surviving kobold, and another hound-like drake, which crouches there in a way oddly reminiscent of the constructs the party had faced earlier. The slinger moves to the southern alcove and uses its remaining glue pot on Drake, sticking him on place. The drake rears back and then pounces at the paladin. The armor holds, but it wouldn't take more than a few chomps from the creature to be a problem for Drake.

Upstairs on the south platform, the other drake snaps at Froodle. It too fails to cause injury. The fighter had best finish the beast quickly.

Slinger:
Move: To south alcove, to get cover from Rottimer and Frug.
Standard: 20:47, Today: DM Paul, for the NPC Slinger, rolled 11 using 1d20+6.  Glue pot +6 vs. Reflex 11 of Drake. Hit. Immobilized.

Re: Skull-Skull!

Froodle hears the crash of splintering doors from somewhere below, followed by some commotion and shouting. He shrugs and thinks there is more to this battle than he thought.

For now though he has this new opponent in front of him, a strange creature, red and green, reptilian in appearance, a drake. He is pleased that he managed to charge and hit the creature as it appeared, though it wasn't the kobold he was expecting. Still, a foe is a foe, so he swings his battleaxe again, taking careful aim to be sure to hit this new creature.

Seeing his battleaxe hit the mark, he opened up his mouth with a roar, unleashing flame that burnt into the open flesh wounds, causing the drake to let off a yelp of pain before falling in a heap at his feet.

Now to join the others and find that pesky other slinger he thought, moving tentatively, shield to the front, down the steps towards the commotion below.

Standard: Froodle rolled 25 on d20+9 using sure strike against red-green guard drake AC15 HIT
Froodle rolled 9 on d10+4 damage

Frug seeing that Froodle took care of the drake up top and that the slinger had been found, runs towards the opposite side of the room to get a shot down the hall at that pesky slinger. Radiant light glows and grows on the end of the staff and Frug moves the quickest anyone has seen a gnome move in a while. As the energy coalesces, Frug stops to send it toward the Slinger. “Hope that brightens up your day”! Re: Skull-Skull!

Rottimer sees Drake in the doorway get hit by another glue pot from the slinger and somehow miraculously avoid a charge from a drake. Rottimer would love to take the slinger out, but with cover and the drake charging, it appears that beast is more pressing. Rottimer steps back calmly to get a better angle on the drake without risking a misfire hitting .......Drake. Rottimer smiles to himself as he realizes the coincidence. He pulls back the bowstring and releases at THE drake in an effort to put him on the ground giving Drake a better chance to kill the drake.

Re: Skull-Skull!

‘Aaarghh’ shouts Drake in frustration as another pot of gloopy sticky stinky goo hardens rapidly around his legs. However the Blue/Yellow Drake has done him a favour and closed to engage him and Rottimer has also helped by knocking the beast prone which Drake takes full advantage of ‘By Bahamut you will engage me alone you slinking cockroach’ challenges Drake calling on his God.

In his frustration at being stuck again he releases his Dragon Breath and a gout of red hot firey liquid seers the Drake burning it deeply, its hide bubbling in various places where the red hot liquid landed.

Drake follows this up with a swing of his Longsword invoking divine energy to channel through the weapon, which aids his aim and also bites into the Drakes hide.

Re: Skull-Skull!

The slinger seems to understand its looming fate, but it rallies itself enough to say, in hissy Common, "If I die, I die a Skull Kicker in the service of Szartharrax!" Then it slings a bullet that shatters against the wall near Froodle's head. It's hard to know what this Szartharrax would think about that

The remaining drake continues to press the paladin. This time it makes contact, ripping through Drake's divine reinforcement and laying on a hurt that he won't be able to take another time.

It looks like it's time for Froodle to take action.

Re: Skull-Skull!

Froodle peers at the silhouettes now visible in the hallway. What is that smell coming from the doorway? Why is Drake covered in blood and not moving? Maybe he needs a hand!
Aha, that pesky slinger is there too, and had the audacity to sling another stone, and there is another of those drakes. He thinks to himself “I got the last one, another will see its maker soon”.

Froodle moves forward, alongside the slinger so he can shift around the little creature as he swings the axe through and beyond, aiming at the drake.

His concentration doesn’t hold though, too much emphasis on the follow through and he stumbles, missing the slinger completely.

He’s annoyed, but now up against the slinger he growls in draconic “use that sling again and I’ll put this axe through you”

Move: Froodle walks to the side of the slinger (if this is not possible in one move due to the space without granting an opportunity attack from movement, then please add in afterwards)

Standard: Passing attack at the slinger with the intention of shifting between the slinger and drake for a secondary attack on the drake (only if a hit)

Free: Combat challenge slinger

Froodle rolls 12 using d20+7 using Passing attack against the slinger AC13 MISS

Slinger: (16/24; 13/12/14/12) North side of hallway, within 2 of guard drake. Adjacent to and engaged with Froodle. Combat challenged by Froodle.

Re: Skull-Skull!

Rottimer sees Frug supporting Drake while attacking the blue and yellow beast. It looks weak on its feet and Rottimer sees a chance to pile on it. He takes careful aim, a miss here would be unfortunate. With a snap, he releases the shaft and it curls toward the creature, barely catching its flesh before passing through with minimal damage. Rottimer cursed his luck and prepares another arrow in case it's still standing in a moment.

Re: Skull-Skull!

Drake nods in appreciation at the healing and support. Time to end this

Drake focuses his mind on his deity and channels these thoughts through his longsword as swings hard at the blue/yellow drake in front of him. The sword finds it mark carving deeply into the Blue / Yellow Drake. The body of the Blue-Yellow Drake slumps to the floor dead.

Time to get free from this goo He tried to scrape off the goo with his shield again a tactic that has worked previously … this time he doesn’t quite get enough off his greaves to break free

Standard action : Holy Smite Strength v AC
1D20+7 = 19 V 15 = HIT

Re: Skull-Skull!

Froodle sees the slinger swap the sling for a dagger, well, he thinks, at least this creature has fight. "You think you can hurt me with that toothpick?" he growls in draconic to be sure the kobold understands. Froodle raises his axe for a swing, knowing others will follow to finish the creature off, he wants to make sure he strikes. Alas, even the beaten creature in front of him has some moves left and the axe swings wide.

Froodle rolls 11 on d20+2 using Sure strike against the slinger AC 13  MISS (edit to clarify typo - roll was d20+9, resulting at 11)

Rottimer has been hunting long enough to know the look. When the eyes start to go vacant, just before an animal breathes its last. For many years, it would be a deer or boar or sometimes even a bear, staring up at Rottimer before being put out of its misery, but in this new life, it was often intelligent creatures, enemies, and vile beasts of all sorts. Today, it was a slinger. Rottimer took a step to gain line of sight. Then he drew his bow taking careful aim and prepared to see the lights go out in yet another enemy.

Re: Skull-Skull!

The ganger doesn't see the final shot coming and is transfixed while darting toward Froodle.

Catching their breath in a cold air of the complex, the party finds scattered coins worth 100 gp and three small gemstones. The ruby is worth 50 gp, the two garnets are worth 25 gp each. Even reputable sellers will take gemstones in trade, but they're also quite popular for under-the-table deals.

The air only gets colder further deeper into the hallway.

I neglected to reduce the difficulty of this encounter, so the party received the full 650 xp.

I have the party at 468 xp each, with 260 gp and one potion of healing.
