Short History of The Blue Duke's Lands
Civilization in the northwest portion of the Oln continent pretty much runs along the length of the river Azwhen. The Azwhen flows out of the Capurn mountain chain and heads into the centeral plains of Oln.
Two hundred generations ago, the warlord Uzik Khun attempted to unite all of Oln under his flag. He swept up from the south, taking the central plains. His armies began following the Azwhen upriver, establishing forts and towns as he went. He was never able to take the far northern stretches of Oln. Uzik Khun ruled for three generations and then fell. His empire quickly came apart.
The forts and towns he had established along the Azwhen began to grow, thriving on the trade that now ran up and down the Azwhen. Soon, the northwest came under the control of four great city states: Aghan, Uzik Tobor, Lichtensten, and Nula. For fifty generations, these city-states warred against each other. With the exception of Lichtensten, the cities fell from power and were soon lost. How this happened is the source of a number of tales. But no one knows for sure.
Oln went through a long dark period of time. And now, after many generations, some stability has begun to assert itself.
Unlike the central and southern areas of Oln, which have formed into large kingdoms and empires, the north is still fractured. Warlords have been able to consolidate power over areas, but no one really is strong enough to unite the north. Trade still runs along the Azwhen. Oln is hungry for the timber and furs that can be supplied from the north, as well as certain medical herbs that can be found nowhere else.
