Short History of The Blue Duke's Lands

Civilization in the northwest portion of the Oln continent pretty much runs along the length of the river Azwhen.  The Azwhen flows out of the Capurn mountain chain and heads into the centeral plains of Oln.

Two hundred generations ago, the warlord Uzik Khun attempted to unite all of Oln under his flag.  He swept up from the south, taking the central plains.  His armies began following the Azwhen upriver, establishing forts and towns as he went.  He was never able to take the far northern stretches of Oln.  Uzik Khun ruled for three generations and then fell.  His empire quickly came apart.

The forts and towns he had established along the Azwhen began to grow, thriving on the trade that now ran up and down the Azwhen.  Soon, the northwest came under the control of four great city states:  Aghan, Uzik Tobor, Lichtensten, and Nula.  For fifty generations, these city-states warred against each other.  With the exception of Lichtensten, the cities fell from power and were soon lost.  How this happened is the source of a number of tales.  But no one knows for sure.

Oln went through a long dark period of time.  And now, after many generations, some stability has begun to assert itself.

Unlike the central and southern areas of Oln, which have formed into large kingdoms and empires, the north is still fractured.  Warlords have been able to consolidate power over areas, but no one really is strong enough to unite the north.  Trade still runs along the Azwhen.  Oln is hungry for the timber and furs that can be supplied from the north, as well as certain medical herbs that can be found nowhere else.

Short History of The Blue Duke's Lands

The 'Blue Duke' or the House of Greenspan is one of the warlords who holds power in the north.

The Greenspan lands are one of the northernmost territories.  The Capurns can be seen from it's northern and western borders.  Most of the population resides in Green Bluff, a trade town located on the banks of the Azwhen, or Wolforge, the ducal seat, up at the northern border.  There are numerous smaller villages scattered about between.

The Duchy's income is based in timber, some mining along the western border, and farming.  In particular, the Duchy produces azmyn, an herb highly valued for its use in healing.  A good portion of the Duchy's trade is based on these crops.

The Greenspans are known for their dark blue eyes.  Hence the nickname the 'Blue Dukes'.  It is said that no child of the house can assume the Ducal seat unless their eyes are blue enough.

The Duchy is bordered to the north by several tribes of snow-goblins.  There is also an ongoing feud with it's eastern neighbor, the House of Braxford, over a border dispute.  Several small wars have been fought with both neighbors, but the conflicts tend to be short lived as no one wants to campaign in winter in the northern lands.

Religion

While there are some pantheistic churches in the south, ancestor worship is more or less the rule in central and northern Oln.  Regardless of race, most clergy are spiritual representatives of some clan.  The various clans are spread out over Oln, although most have an ancestral clan seat that houses the clan's main shrine and graveyard.

There are two ancestral seats in the Blue Duke's lands.  The gnomish clan of Whattkers and the human clan of Greenspan both have their ancestral seats here.

The village of West Endings is the Natter's Landing seat.

Unsurprisingly, the Greenspan seat is Wolforge.
