On January 7th, 2073, thousands of teams all over the world embarked on Disney's grand 150th Anniversary gaming tournament. There weren't enough Augmented Reality arenas for all the teams to play simultaneously, so they were staggered throughout the day, each team getting about an hour to set up and play.
For the
Positron Punishers, their first game was at 2pm in an outdoor arena in the Amarillo desert - in January, thankfully, so the air was cool, because there were no handicaps for seasonal conditions of the arena.
They weren't the worst team in the world by far - but to make it past the first round of cuts, they had to beat the scores of 512 other teams over the course of the first six months of the tournament. And then they'd have to do better than 256 more teams by the end of the year.
With odds like that, it wasn't about winning. No. It was about getting the attention of sponsors and boosting the team - and its players' - profile.
