The Bunkhouse (Character Creation)

Character Details -

1) Characters begin at Novice level. The long-term plan is to complete Blood Drive and continue into the Headstone Hill setting. Characters begin with a number of languages equal to 1/2 Smarts die type. One of these is the native language at a d8, the rest are at a d6.
2) Any of the new D:TWW material is available (The Core and Companion at the moment...)
3) any other info will be added here. :)

One thing I would like to know, is if this were an HBO/Showtime series, who would play your character? (Doesn’t have to be a current male or female actor either. I’m a visual kind of person and it helps pull me in or give me ideas if I photoshop the group :) )

Also: Ask and discuss anything about your characters/concepts

The Bunkhouse (Character Creation)

What concept(s) do people have in mind?

I'm in two other Deadland games (one for Blood Drive, one for Headstone Hill), and I'm a mad scientist in both, and whilst I love them as a archetype, I think it'd be good for me to do something else.

Thinking what works at Novice, but also allows room to grow, will be tough too. I'm so used to starting at Seasoned for things these days!

EDIT: Thoughts since I wrote this:
Going for a Mexican or Indian, who is good at Riding, shooting from horseback. Due to the theme of the adventure, being good at Riding would make sense for why I was contacted to head there.
For an Indian, i was thinking one that isn't Old Ways, but wears the clothes and uses the weapons of the white man. Not all of them would isolate away after all.

The Bunkhouse (Character Creation)

I'm thinking of a young Chi master

Master Lao and his apprentice Chang Li appeared one day in the town riding a, wagon Ladened with merchandise. They bought an old stable and turned it into a general store.
Sadly Master Lao passed away a, year later leaving the young Chang to run the store....

Chang is 21 with an athletic build but also looking slightly fine boned and delicate.... Though looks can be deceiving he is actually stronger. Both in body and spirit than he looks.

Though an outsider he has made his home here and feels the town folk are his family and is the first to step forward to defuse arguments and fights... Though no one has ever seen him lift a hand in anger

Only thing I would say to that is, have read the Epitaph Archives that the Marshal posted?

quote:
What town there is consists of a livery, general store, and a small saloon named The Lonely Crow. These few establishments serve as a supply point and news source for a few local ranchers, and a place for their hands to spend money on Saturday nights. Sutter’s Flats isn’t even large enough to support a part-time marshal. Folks here tend to their own problems and are the very definition of “rugged independence.”

Would it make more sense to have come from another town? Though as it will be a long time away from town, tying yourself down to running a store might not fit?

And I think I'm going to make a Vaquero, a Hispanic cowboy :) Not like the border is far, after all.

In reply to Character 1 (msg # 4):

Perhaps hang and his master came to open up a store after successfully having one in another town.... Unfortunately his master died before they could set it up so he sold the stock, the cart and horse they had to pay for the funeral and he's staying in one of the boarding houses until he settles his masters affairs before heading back east

Unfortunately, this Sutter's Flats town is barely enough to call a town and there isn't even a boarding house in town, you would be having to find a place in the livery or some other kindness of folks to get a roof over your head. Or, could be staying outside too if preferred. :)

Perhaps you and your master were trying to do that in a town further west, one of the other railroad or border towns? You've come back east after running into some of that "anti-chinese" prejudice which ended up practically stealing everything your master left (maybe except for a couple of personal items of his you kept).

What would put you in a situation where you'd agree to a cattle drive and all the things that go with it?

In reply to Marshal (msg # 6):

Perhaps they were returning from further west after unsuccessfully trying to set up a store in a rail town...... Got run out and then had their stock taken from them.... His master was injured and they managed to make it this far before he sucomed to his wounds.... Chang promised his master to return his body back east to his family.... He's managed to gather enough money from selling what little was left them to buy a coffin and to store the old man at the undertakers in a temporary grave but needs to raise the money for the train fair back east for him and his masters body..... The cattle drive will pay enough for him to do that and honour his masters dying wishes

Re: The Bunkhouse (Character Creation)

So, from a cursory look at what's in store for the Blood Drive adventure (mostly just looking at the info from the Kickstarter), I suppose a Huckster from back East would mostly join up for a cash-positive trip up North.

Or to disappear from someone they crossed... No one would look for you out in the wilderness with a bunch of cows

Re: The Bunkhouse (Character Creation)

I've designed my character on Google Docs, just need to move it to a suitable format here.

I'm blending being a Vaquero and a Mariachi, turning myself in a Hispanic singing cowboy.

Wrangling cattle, and then playing my guitar at night to help the posse relax.

Lots of d6's skill wise, leaving me room to grow, and eventually take Tale-Teller too.

As for a huckster? Being on the run from people back East would work, as who would expect to find you here? Or the Twilight Legion think something suspicious is going on, hence wanting someone with a bit more magical mojo than someone like myself?

Re: The Bunkhouse (Character Creation)

I'm thinking of a rancher's daughter, good with horses but a bit naive and overconfident. And on the run from an arranged marriage, unless that would stop her being recruited.

Re: The Bunkhouse (Character Creation)

So far, I'm liking everything I'm seeing. :)

One note, at this point you most likely are unaware of the overall Legion, but might have at least heard of the Explorer's Society. Although, I half expect by the time you get through the end of the drive you may have drawn their attention, if not before the end. :)

Oh, I don't remember if I mentioned, but everyone has a number of languages equal to half your Smarts die. One, your native language, is at d8, the rest are at d6.

Re: The Bunkhouse (Character Creation)

Hey, all.

Picking up the pieces and working up a card-sharp type character, female, formerly of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She's pushing 30, but still is of youthful appearance, though a bit haunted in her eyes from time to time.

I actually do have a picture for her - the woman is a model and the picture I found is at least a decade old; this would reflect Charlie from her days as a debutante way back before...well, during the war, prior to '65.

If we already have a Huckster, I'll shift focus to a fll-up gunslinger with some poker-playing abilities.

Re: The Bunkhouse (Character Creation)

Normally I'd say the more the merrier, but as someone playing a card sharp female huckster from New Orleans named Charlotte, I'm feeling a touch crowded in on, heh. If I hadn't already posted IC I'd offer to play something else. Still might, I'll crack open the book when I get off work.

Still cracking a smile at the coincidence.

Re: The Bunkhouse (Character Creation)

I just realized I haven't said much about Valerie.  Mechanically, Valerie isn't really a gunslinger, she's a gunfighter, built around using a Ballard Express rifle to maximum effectiveness.

Which means firing it as rapidly as possible at close range because this is Deadlands lol, but I can try to be a sniper sometimes I suppose (hint, it never works in Deadlands, because you're only as stealthy as the least stealthy person, and every fight occurs in pistol short range distance lol).  But it's a cool aesthetic and something neat and different.

No arcane background.

Hey, all. New to the game, thinking I'll roll up a card-sharp female huckster from-

I kid, of course. I'll be rolling up an Irish immigrant turned hired gun, I think. Nice to meet everyone!

In reply to Valerie Letifer (msg # 16):

I'm dying here! That's almost as funny as my three-year-old granddaughter's commentary from the back seat today when she dropped her drink: "Godammit, no NO NO NO!"

Anyway, I'll change my writeup and go from there with a straight-up gunslinger. And really, I never looked at any of the other characters!
