So I take it the Legion of Videssos is not a viable source? A couple of them had longswords..

Each character may have 25 GP for personal items. If you wish to purchase a weapon of your choice, by all means go ahead, but you will be issued standard gear: Short sword and shield OR crossbow and spear (plus a dagger for both) which you will carry and use when in uniform. Most of your encounters in the city will be in uniform.

Not sure what it is you cannot see.

You will need to create a description for your character -- click on your own name to get that started -- and under that box should be a link to edit your character sheet.

That's just it. Under Character Details there ought to be a field where a person can place a character sheet and edit it. Under My Character Details, there is no such field.

So, with 25 go or less to play with, I'll be a Healer who cannot afford a Healer's kit. Would you allow Healer's tools for 5 gp so I don't have to take a -2 penalty every time I try to use the skill?

This might be a silly question, but I just want to make sure I understand before settling on a build. When you say that our characters will be expected to carry those weapons, does that mean we'll be expected to only use them when in uniform? Would we be able to wear them and then just use our preferred weapon?

For example, say I wanted to buy a rapier as my preferred weapon. I would carry my shortsword and shield into battle, but fight with my rapier. Is that allowed?

Gear that applies to your role in the Company will be provided at no cost -- weapons, Healer's kit, etc. Spend the 25 GP on personal items.

While you may own whatever weapon you wish when you join the Company, you will be issued and trained with the military weapons they provide and use. If an encounter starts when you are not in uniform but lounging about or out having a drink with your buddies while off duty, by all means feel free to wear your civies and carry your personal weapon (rapier, battle ax, whatever) and use it. But if your are in uniform (and the armor is part of the uniform) you will be expected to carry the weapons issued. This is a military force. Individual Marines may own Uzzis and even shoot them for fun during off hours, but they do not wear them hanging around their necks when they are on patrol. They would be punished for being out of uniform.

I can pretty much guarantee that your encounters in this game will occur when you are in uniform, generally when you have been sent somewhere to do something. That's how the military works.

I am assuming that standard packs with mess kits are provided? Perhaps basic toolkits for crafts, only if that craft is plied for the Company (like armorer or weaponsmith)?

Are javelins kosher? I don't really know the background all that well, but it seems like a suitably greco-roman weapon that infantry would use as a backup ranged weapon.

Just stop with the weapon choices, if you would. You will be armed and trained as follows at no cost to you. You will chose at the outset if you wish to be Infantry or Archers

Infantry:

Short sword -- the Roman Gladius. This is a light weapon and can be the focus of the Weapon Finesse feat (1d6 damage)
Dagger -- the Roman Pugio (1d4 damage) can be thrown (10 ft range)
Armor -- Scale mail (+5 bonus) medium armor
Shield -- light wooden round shield -- the Roman Parma +1 AC

Archers:

Recurved composite longbow -- (1d8 damage -- 110 ft range)
Spear -- two handed weapon - can be thrown (20 ft range) -- not the Pilum, a wooden hafted boar spear design
Dagger -- the Roman Pugio (1d4 damage) can be thrown (10 ft range)
Armor -- studded leather (+3 bonus) light armor


All player characters regardless of class will be trained and equipped as one of these types of fighters. Magic users will get advanced training as they level up as will clerics and rogues.

There are many human races in this world, as there are in ours, and many languages.

The common tongue in Beryl (the city you are being recruited in) is a dialect or Rosean, understandable in all of the Jewel cities around the Sea of Torments as an American an Englishman, an Australian and a South African are all understandable to one another but have different accents and specific word usage in our world.

But unless you want to come from somewhere exotic and thus need to learn Rosean, I would not bother.

Since this has come up before, all PC's are assumed to be literate in their own language. Enough to read a sign or a menu. If they want to be able to write more than a scrawl they must spend points in profession -- scribe.

Racial types will be as varied as they are in our world with the region you are in being the European variants. If you travel far or wish to have a more exotic background we can discuss details.

Sorry, I think I'm going to back out. I just don't know the world setting, and I feel like I'm stumbling in the dark and running into walls. It's not going to be a fun experience for me, and I apologize for wasting your time or causing any problems.
