Re: The Canyon

Leah smiled in satisfaction, and a little amazement. She knew the power of a 10' pole, but this was quite a demonstration. No sooner had she brought it to the table that nearly a half-dozen people now wanted to join up with them! Perhaps that merchant who had traded it to her for her cow was right- it was magic!

Re: The Canyon

His head still swimming from the peaches, Barnabas declines Brandli's offer. He would have to regain some semblance of sobriety for studying his spell book later.

Ms. Hawke:
"So who are you all and I can't wait to hear about all your tales of adventures."

Barnabas looks over the inordinately buckled woman with more than casual interest.

He coughs and has the foresight to wipe away the last of the peach juice before grinning mischievously.

"For starters, Teodore murdered Fiene's only friend. You don't want to be his friend..."

"Several of us nearly joined a party of the damned, doomed to haunt their campsite..."

"We found a secret message on a cavern wall: R. - As agreed, the jewels await you two levels down in the chamber past the acolytes' cells. How you deal with the wasps is your own concern! -M. You could only see it in the darkness!"

He continues on in this fashion, doubtless interrupted numerous times until he is no longer the one telling the tale.

Lily listened to Ben go on and on with marked interest, only broken by the occasional drink, hiccup, or other bodily need.  Ever so often she interjected with an "ooh" and a "no you didn't" ... but otherwise she stayed utterly entertained.

Brandli grunted at Whitcombe.  Her tone was very flat.  "Girls only.  Off with ya." With that, she dismissed him.

Orla, however, was better-received.  "Welcome abroad!  Ya got some kinda tools..."  Brandli nods.  They weren't the fine, mechanical implements that Brandli had hired for, but the holy symbol hinted at a different kind of utility.  Besides, the two women who joined her in pestering strangers had plenty of those.  Yes, this Orla Pont would do!  "You're tall, too.  Good bargainer..." Then, as if to herself or everyone around her, she says, "Elders was right! Give and send, and the gods will spend."

Fiene was a bit surprised the halfling was willing to give up half of her share, but it wasn't his call to make.

He reaches up on the table, and puts the blue filled flask back in his pouch.  "Tomorrow we'll see if we can speak with Dagunn Rakel."  he pushes back from the table. "and back to Stonehell the day after?  I'm still feeling drained from the ghosts, I am going to retire for the evening."

He pulls his stained cloak tighter around him.  "Good evening." he says to the newcomers and the old.

"If it's going to be another day before you go out again," Devin asked cautiously after Fiene declared their prospective timeline, "is there anyone who'd like to go out tomorrow?"

There were so many there that someone must be as eager as he was to get started.  It might be rough without a skilled wizard to support them, but he had faith they'd win through.

Leah nodded sagely at Fiene. "Undead draining is a bad thing. I knew a man who had a friend who's cousin knew of someone who used to come to the markets that was drained by a wight. So nobody will blame you for retiring." And with Fiene gone, so was his walking stick. Undoubtedly, that made her pole all the more important, she knew.

When Devin made his request, she rolled her eyes. Brandli had cut him off preemptively, and she also had no intention of being his rebound girl. "No, I am here to go to the dungeon, not be romanced." ... "Maybe after the dungeon."

Bertilak happily accepts a drink from Lilith. "I seem to have come out behind in my first adventure. The bodyguard I hired was expensive, and she was nearly killed by the goblins. I'd like to get back to the ruins as soon as possible to hopefully recoup my loss, but it might be best if we all go together. An extra day might give us time to form a good plan, or learn a few things that may help out."

With Fiene confined to his bed for a day the others were free to explore Fourtower Bridge. Barnabus asked around about Dagunn Rakel discovering that the magic user occupied the south west tower.

Upon visiting her Barnabas and whichever of his companions choose to accompany him were invited into the tower. Within the bottom level of the tower Rakel kept a stuffed crocodile. She was a tall woman in her sixties, she was witty and intelligent as she entertained her visitors "how can I help you?" she asked.

With time pressing down on him, Devin followed up on his proposal and headed in the direction of Stonehell on his own if no one else would.  Perhaps the bishop wasn't as infallible as he'd believed.

Devin would have faith, though.

Barnabas withholds nothing from the learned lady of the tower, provided she's happy to listen. His lack of social skills pertains mostly to feeding rather than getting along with others.

After he has recounted the previous day's exploration, with especial attention to the mysterious monument (the one across from the room with six skeletons), he produces various items that might interest her, namely: the three fire beetle nodules, the almond-scented potion, and that silly parasol thing.

With decorum Mistress Rakel listened to Ben's tale with interest, even going so far as to serve some milky tea sweetened with honey.

When it came time to show off their spoils she dismissed the firebeetle glands as useful but shortlived warning the pair that they would soon lose their light emitting properties. The potion and parasol were much more to her liking. She examined them keenly pronounced that she would be pleased to study them further if they wished. For her services she would charge a fee of fifty gold for the potion as alchemy was one of her specialities and the parasol for one hundred gold. If they wished to sell them for her own collection she would give one hundred gold for the potion and five hundred for the parasol.

Barnabas coughs. Five ways, Teodore, five ways, he thinks but does not say.

"Once an item has been added to your collection, as it were, does it reside there permanently? Or might we reacquire that item at a surcharge?"

"One more point of clarification if you don't mind," he requests. "Should we sell you the parasol (100 gold each has a nice ring to it), would you still deign to inform us what it that we have sold you?"

OOC Barnabas pays 50 gp to ID the potion and sells the parasol for 500 gp, obstreperous objections notwithstanding.

"I would be happy to talk further about any properties I could discern after my studies if you wished to visit for tea again. It is good to see such a interest in artefacts" she replied to Ben. In terms of some kind of business arrangement she shook her head "I'm a collector, I have no interest in profit" Rakel did smile add a little compromise "I would consider to trade it back to you for something else of interest, depending on what you bring."

After some study and testing Mistress Rakel concluded that the elixir was a potion of healing. The unidentified parasol was entered into her collection which she paid for in gold coins.

Ben purchased flasks of oil in Millie's inventory shop. The scary wooden demon mask with silver inlays was unsold and remained on display. Millie's two large dogs lounged around the store not wanting to go outside in the drizzling rain.

Re: The Canyon

As several members of the group departed for happy retirement, romance, or to go discuss matters of fishmen, Leah called to them, "O.K., I will be here when we are ready to leave so come get me when it is time for Stonehell. If I am sleeping, it is okay to wake me so that I can walk, instead of having to be carried. But I will be here, unless I am out in the alley or have to go somewhere else, which I do not think I do."

As they departed, true to her word, she stayed at the table, because she was vaguely aware that there was a free drink involved in it. Maybe she could even choose. She would stay and talk with whomever remained for however long they could tolerate the conversation.

Her most important bit of business though was with Lorna. "How much is this inn? I need to know so I know how much gold I have to bring out of the dungeon because it would be safer to just make one trip there and back again, although if it is a lot, then maybe I will have to make two trips so I can carry it all."

Bertilak is more than pleased to find that the parasol was worth so much, and happy to take his share. He'd worried that the first expedition might have given him a loss, with all expenses figured.

A bit more confident about exploring dangerous ruins than he was yesterday, he pays for his meal and a night in the common room and finds a bed to get some rest, so he will be well prepared to study his spell book in the morning and be ready for the next delve.

"Tell Brandli about youse, Orla." Brandli says to Orla Pont.  "Me, I'm Brandli.  Come from, ehh, place with halflings and tall ones like you.  Used to bouncer and hunt.  Got a, uhh, what you call them... kun-trap-shun... kon-sti-pay-shun... after I hit my head on a root, though.  Joined some folks on the way to that Stonehell place a little while ago, but they got tore apart by a monster while I was making water." Brandli does not seem terribly upset about her former companions being torn apart, but then again this could be another quirk of hers.  Or, she could be an iron-hearted halfling.  "Figured I'd go anyway, and hire somebody, knows what she's doin' more better than they did, gods rest 'em.  Buy ya a beer, a meal, and a night here, if you'd like."

Brandli also indulges Leah, quite tolerable of any conversation that the fellow adventurer has to offer.  Her own contributions are minimal and blunt.

Re: The Canyon

Whilst the day remained cloudy and overcast Lorna tended the hearth to keep the common room of the Moorland Magpie warm. To Leah's questions she was polite enough to remark she had no interest in selling but warned that some adventurers like the four adventurers living in the four towers did grow rich enough to settle down many didn't.

The cleric Orla was devoted and spent much of the day in prayer when she did speak with Brandli her mood was somber and she spoke of her struggles with her faith, she had been orphaned as a child and given to the church to study from a young age. Her whole life a period of supplication and service.

OOC Please make it clear exactly who Ben is giving gold to and how much so it can be correctly recorded on their character sheets as there has been some confusion over what the split is.

Re: The Canyon

"Thank you," Leah tells Brandli, completely missing that the offer was to Orla and not herself. "Poles don't come cheap, after all, so I don't have any money, except for that one gold that the magic duck gave me, of course, and I can't spend that." She laughed at how absurd it would be to spend such a thing as if it was a common coin. "But I will just wait here so I don't miss anyone since I have to get to Stonehell."

She was visibly disappointed that Lorna said she did not want to sell, and she was equally dubious that buying one of the towers was an option. "Nobody staying at a bed and breakfast would want to walk up and down so many stairs that a tower would have all the time, unless it was a wizard bed and breakfast, and I don't know how that would be. So maybe I have to just build something that is new, but homey," she confided to Brandli.

Being bereft of funds, she would indeed sleep here at the table, unless and until rousted from the place. At that point she would look for an alley or stable to sleep in, perhaps doing some mucking in exchange for the latter. She would return to the inn as soon as possible, so she did not miss the others.
