Re: The Canyon

The last goblin now surrounded faced off against Ermangard and Nerida but neither of the warrior women were able to hit the goblin.

Amongst the goblin corpses Ben was able to retrieve a dagger. The other adventurers kept away from the danger.

OOC All misses from the hirelings. Relying on Theodore to finish this off or the goblin will get to attack again.

Re: The Canyon

With the goblin cornered Valerian was able to drag the woman at arms Arietta out of the room safely. The woman was still breathing but weakly and had lost a lot of blood. Meanwhile Teodore advanced on the last goblin and with a powerful sword thrust skewed the creature on his blade, the goblin died with a whimper and the battled ended.

The smell of blood and carnage joined the rank smell of the goblin camp and pools of fresh blood gathered on the stone floor.

Re: The Canyon

Tiptoeing his way through the abattoir, Ben retrieves his other two daggers. He congratulates Nerida on her first triumph in combat. He secretly fears she may ask for a raise given this dramatic increase in her experience.

Turning to Bertilak, he prompts him to "just put those three others to sleep." They can come back tomorrow and deal with the wasps.

Re: The Canyon

Bertilak does what he can to help Valerian to staunch Arietta's bleeding. It's the least he could do for his hireling. Not that she seemed to like him that much. And she was expensive. And didn't provide much help in the fight after all.

Bertilak considered all of this, but decided now was not the time to be a cad. After Arietta was tended to, he prepared himself. He set his mind to rights, went over the mystic incantation and gestures of his spell, preparing himself.

He nods to the party, "Well, now that that unpleasantness is over, let's see to those archers in the next room. My spell should be powerful enough to affect them all."

OOC: Wasn't sure how "death and dying" works in this game, but if it's possible to save Arietta, by all means, let's save her!

Also, ready to cast sleep on the goblin archers. Rolling in advance so the DM doesn't have to wait...
14:08, Today: Bertilak the Green rolled 13 using 2d8.  sleep spell.

Re: The Canyon

The quick work by Valerian managed to save the life of Arietta. Bertilak ensured himself that she wasn't going to die before he prepared to defeat the other band of goblins. After retrieving his dagger from the dank smelling, corpse filled room Ben went to congratulate Nerida, the young girl accepted Ben's praise willingly as she was trying hard to wash every trace of blood from the head of her warhammer.

The copper nose ring was large and had a good weight to it when Teodore removed it and took it as a trophy. Spell prepared Bertilak managed to subdue the other band of goblins without much ado.

OOC For the moment I have accepted the party's tactic to deal with the other goblins, in future we might play it out in more detail. Arietta is unconscious but alive, she will need to be carried back to Fourtower Bridge.

The door opened to reveal a room fifteen foot by twenty foot. The room much like the others was strewn with dead leaves and dirt. In the northeast corner was a pile of splintered wood and damp rotted cloth. In the northwest corner was a ruined desk.

"This looks promising." Fiene comments to Ermangard.  "If this was an office or study perhaps there is something here."

He pulls it the desk drawers, looking for secret compartments or some papers that might still survive.

Re: The Canyon

Barnabas agrees. It looks like this might have been the office for a customs official who knows how many years ago. He waits for Fienne to finish searching the desk before suggesting they return to the coziness of the inn.

OOC Did the goblins have any other treasure besides the nose ring? Can the short bows be sold?

Re: The Canyon

The room Fiene and Ermangard explored was like many of the rooms in the gatehouse was ruined and damp. The desk similarly was wrecked and when Fiene pulled what remained of the drawers it crumbled into broken pieces. What remained was a single wooden peg protruding from the northern wall.

In the other rooms Barnabas searched each goblin, on their belts they all wore small pouches, inside of them was the glint of electrum pieces. Gathered together Ben collected forty-eight electrum pieces in total. The goblin's weapons were small, crude and probably worthless.

Re: The Canyon

The last peg pulled from the wall Fiene turned away to speak to his guard. As the wizard spoke to Ermangard the woman-at-arms shook her head in surprise then pointed to the northern wall. The wall, or what had been the wall had swung open to reveal a small alcove. Within the alcove was stone shelves. On the shelves was a small bottle filled with some liquid, a neatly folded but stained piece of cloth, and a stick wrapped in small iridescent white scales.

"That is a pleasant surprise." he comments with a smile.   He pulled the stopper from the bottle.  "A guard's whiskey stash?  A wee nip for what ails ya." he quips before taking a sniff and putting the stopper back in.  Not smart to drink something you don't know anything about.

He hands the shiny stick to Ermangard.  "Like any weapon you've seen?" he asks for her opinion.

He takes the cloth himself, and unfurls it, expecting it to be as full of holes as everything else here.

Re: The Canyon

The bottle when examined contained a blue liquid and smelt faintly of almonds. Ermangard found a catch on the stick which when released opened up the stitched together white scales into an umbraculum, a flimsy round shaped shield on the end of a stick. "More like shield than a weapon but not like anything I've ever seen" the warrior replied. The cloth when unfurled was a stained and road worn red cloak.

In reply to DM (msg # 380):

Valerian takes an interest in the umbrella.

"I have a theory...these scales appear to be white dragon scales, which would be impervious to cold. Therefore, I posit that this umbrella may offer protection from icy dragon breath and similar cold attacks!"

Re: The Canyon

Further study of the parasol by Valerian reinforced his theory. The stitched together iridescent white scales were definitely large enough, white enough and tough enough to be dragon scales. The second part of Valerian's theory that it might offer some protection would require some kind of test which might prove to be a dangerous endeavour.
