In search of Da Dragon - Stadhafi

West from the crossroads Stadhafi noticed that the worked stone corridor ended as she entered a natural cave. The walls, floor and ceiling were uneven flowstone. The large empty cave exits north and south. To the north she heard the chittering of bats, to the south she heard a whistling.

Staðhafi considered the two directions.

Bats could be an alert system- flapping about if disturbed to wake a sleeping dragon. But they could also be a food source. If so, they would be unlikely to remain in a cave with a dragon if they were being preyed upon.
Whistling could be air through tunnels and caves. But it could also be a sleeping dragon's nostril.

It seemed that south presented a slightly larger chance of finding the dragon, so south is where she went.

The tunnel to the sound led Stadhafi to a cave with a stone well in the middle. The whistling sound came from the well. The ceiling was wet and dripping.

There was two exits to the west.

She looked about and scowled. No sleeping dragon.

She peered into the well to see if any fools had tossed coins into the water for luck. If so, she would scoop them up if they were not difficult to retrieve.

After that she considered. Two exits here, and one back towards the bats. Here seemed likelier for leading to the dragon- there was water, and again, she doubted the bats would stay right next to a dragon feasting on them. So, she took the topmost exit west- thy had initially gone north to see the sign, so north seemed better as an option.

(ooc)
I am fairly certain you meant west, like on the picture, not east, or were there more turns than suspected? Thank you!

The bottom of the well was unseen by Stadhafi, her lantern only lighting up the descending shaft until it was lost into darkness.

The tunnel northwest led into a cave. The cave was roughly circular about thirty foot wide with a pool of water in the north west.

Nearby to the pool was a dwarf. The dwarf had a long braided beard and a balding head of red hair. The dwarf worn a suit of chain mail and held a satchel. The dwarf knelt and peered into the water until Stadhafi entered when he looked up.

OOC Yes I meant west.

In search of Da Dragon - Stadhafi

Staðhafi dropped a rock down the well, listening to hear if it hit water, and to judge how deep it might be. If it did not make a splash, indicating the well was dry, it might be profitable to come back here later and try to descend. But that would be another time- for now she was dragon hunting, so she moved on.

--

She had her weapon at the ready when she saw the dwarf since she was alone on a hunt, and she kept it ready upon seeing the dwarf. However, she did not hold it aggressively towards him- just prepared in case he chose to be violent. She briefly scanned the cave to see if there were any indications of a dragon- discarded scales, reptilian smell, claw marks scouring the stone, etc. It would be annoying if dwarves had already dispatched it and taken it's hoard away.

Approaching the dwarf, she called out,"Ho, dwarf, I am seeking the dragon. Does one exist in these caves, or was the warning sign a miserable lie?"

The dwarf had an axe but it was on his belt rather than in his hands "I've seen nay dragon" the dwarf replied. The cave had the smell of an animal's lair but no sign of animal or dragon "have ye seen any dwarves? I seemed to have lost my companions in this tunnels" he asked.

Staðhafi relaxed when he did not pull out his axe, but she did not put her sword away yet. "I have seen no other dwarves," she replied, walking closer. "I will continue to seek the dragon. You may accompany me if you wish until you find your clan," she informed him. Reching the water's edge, she asked, "What do you seek in the water?" while looking into it herself, gaze shifting between the water and the dwarf.

Together Stadhafi and the dwarf walked passed the whistling well and north to the bat cave. The cave was roughly thirty foot by thirty foot and smelt strongly of guano and ammonia. Stalactites hung from the cracked ceiling and stalagmites stuck up in mounds on the floor.

At the intrusion of their domain the bats flew around both intruders. The chittering and flapping of wings was confusing but did not prevent them from entering. Stadhafi saw no other exits.

Staðhafi looked about the cave, checking to see if dragon tracks were in the guano. It was very unlikely a dragon would live among bat feces, but it should be checked. She also looked to see if there was an exit to the outside somewhere in the ceiling, since she assumed the bats would fly out nightly to hunt.

"The sign was a lie," Staðhafi stated, turning towards the exit and walking east back to the rusted signpost. Once there she would take off the sign if it could be disconnected, or break it off if the rust made such a thing possible, or kick down or pull down the entire signpost if neither of those could be done, using her rope for leverage if needed. Then back to the well, where she would toss it down for wasting her time.

Assuming this could be accomplished, she would then ask the dwarf, "Do you have any rope?"

The metal signpost was rusty and not too tough to breakdown. The effort to pull down the sign did make a lot of noise but was simply done. Once broken Stadhafi threw the sign down the well, the sign clattered a few times as it knocked on the sides of the well but made little noise besides a dull thud when it hit the bottom of the well.

The dwarf bemused by Stadhafi's antic shook his balding head at the query "nay. The other dwarves were carrying such things. I came here to study the leftover dwarven architecture. Have you seen any?"

She was unconcerned about the noise. If something came, she could fight it, or throw the stubby-legged dwarf at it.

At his question, she said, "No. But I have not looked for any either."

No dragon had been found anywhere, but the rest of the caves could still be examined, so she then took the lower western exit out of the well room.

She bore the missing dwarf no ill will- unlike the others, cowardice did not keep him away; a search for his missing companions was the likely culprit in his case`. However, she was not going to delay her quest for glory for someone else's quest.

Having been through the entire set of caves now, it was certain there was no dragon. So, the next step was to determine where to go next. And that was clear enough- the well. So, she backtracked once more.

Once there, she took out her rope and tied it to the most secure thing she could find closest to the well, ideally the well itself if it had any outcroppings, protrusions, or remnants of parts for raising and lowering a bucket. Once done, she would pull on it hard several times, ensuring it would hold the weight of herself and her arms and armor. If she could satisfy herself of this, she would then tie the loose end about her waist, drop the excess in the well, then enter herself, lowering herself slowly to the bottom, to see what else had been thrown down here besides the sign. Superstitious fools with more coins than sense probably threw a great deal of wealth away, she imagined.

If the dwarf came back while in the process of doing this, he was welcome to join her.
If not, then so be it.

The last thing she needed would be to be partially down the well and have someone cut the rope. So she waited to see who or what it was that was approaching. Since the other cave had been empty, she assumed it was the dwarf returning from the hallway, but she kept her sword drawn just a case it was not.

Unprepared to descend the well whilst danger could be lurking above Stadhafi stood and waited for the arrival of whatever was approaching from the north.

What entered Stadhafi's lantern light was a gang of small scaly dogmen. The gang of eleven kobolds all carried shovels and buckets. They were indifferent to Stadhafi and walked passed her. In the next cave they set to work cleaning up the swarm of nauseating worms. Shovelling them into their buckets.

She considered combat, but there was no glory in battling a swarm of unarmed tiny dogmen. However, she did not trust them not to cut the rope as she descended, so the well had to be abandoned for now.

Instead, she took her rope back, and then she went back through the lower western passage, through the cave and south into the dungeon itself, keeping a careful eye on the kobolds in case they planned on ambushing her.

Not having found anything of interest so far, Staðhafi assumed the feet were more kobolds or dwarves. So she flipped a pebble in the air to follow whichever direction it rolled. It bounced forward, without rolling left or right, so she followed it and also went south.

While they probably were as big a set of lies as the sign had been, she stopped to read the inscriptions before going through the door. And most importantly, she kept her sword ready, in case the approaching feet were not matched to her assumption.

Four to one odds- not fair, but Staðhafi knw life was not fair. Anyone who complained about that fact was beneath contempt. She tried to maneuver herself into the alcove before the doors so they could not completely surround her. And she announced as she put down the lantern and drew a dagger, "I came here to hunt down dwarves, not to fight you. Surely you can overwhelm me in battle with your numbers. But if it comes to that, I promise that I will take at last one of you with me. Which one of you will it be, or do we continue on our separate ways?"

She clacked her sword and dagger together to emphasize her point.

(ooc)
She does not speak orcish, but her alignment is Chaotic. I am unsure of the limitations of alignment tongue, but if she can say that, or at least get her point across in her alignment tongue, she does so. If nothing else, maybe that and her lie about hunting dwarves will cause them to see her as `one of them', or at least someone not a target.

They growled and snarled in orcish, their intent clear to Stadhafi. They would take something from Stadhafi in exchange for letting her go free.

Staðhafi had the barest of equipment, all of which she considered necessary, being alone in the dungeon, and she had only two gold coins to her name. However, she was not about to put down either the sword or the dagger to retrieve the coins. "I have nothing to give you, save the sharp edge of my blades. Either move on with your business, or decide which of you will collect them first." And in case that response was too advanced for them, she dumbed it down, sneering, "You get nothing but death from me."

She had no fear of dying herself, since if death came against these odds it would be glorious enough. The question was whether the orcs had that same commitment.

Her initial feints and thrusts had not met their mark. Fortunately, neither did theirs. Combat was on, although she still doubted their courage and their convictions, and she assumed that it was only a courage borne of numbers. So she decided that the best thing to do would be to see how they fared if they lost one.

This time she targeted the smallest one in range, while still keeping her back protected. The smallest would be the one they would least likely care about, but perhaps the reality of losing anyone might cause them to reconsider the whole attack.

Ten feet was not very far- if she hung from the bottom of the rope it would only be a drop of three feet or so, easily doable without damage. But that would just be to the tarp- who knows how much further down the ground was below it? Injured as she was, it was not a risk to take. So, uttering an epithet, she climbed up again and recovered her rope. It looked like more backtracking was in order. She went back to where the orcs lay dead.

Looking them over, she briefly considered stripping them for their clothing and using it to lengthen her rope, but as rough and poor as the material was, but rejected the idea. It would hold her weight, but seemed unlikely to be able to hold her weight in platemail.

So, instead she went to the east, and then through the door there.

The door, four foot wide and eight foot tall was constructed of five inch thick, iron banded timbers. At a push from Stadhafi it did not yield nor open, it was stuck.

OOC Stadhafi may try again if they wish, roll an Open Door check if you do and repeat if you wish to continue.

There was no water in the fountain, so it was unlikely that fools would throw their money within. She still took a glance to see if there were any coins in the fountain, in case it had recently been emptied of liquid, but if not, she proceeded through the southern door.

The dry fountain had no coins in it. Stadhafi opened the south door, it led to a corridor with a lowered and rusty portcullis midway on the eastern side and a door to the south. Through the portcullis was a room with skeletal remains and old blood stains on the floor.

There was no other entranceways or doors in the room.

The stone dial had a smiling face at the top and a handle so that the dial could be spun. Stadhafi found that the wheel turned easily when she gripped the handle, it however was well balanced so any control of where it stopped was lost as it rolled swiftly on its bearings. In a loud clamour it spun around and around.

She picked up the blue gem and pocketed it away. Despite no dragon, this delve had not been a waste after all. And this gem was certainly better than a few silver coins she could not reach.

Consideration was given about spinning again- she believed in luck, but she also believed in not pressing one's luck. The result had been good, so it was best to be content with that for now.

So, she exited out of the room, going to the portcullis. She tried to either lift it enough to get underneath, or squeeze through the bars if they were far enough apart. If she was successful, she readied to battle the skeleton she saw within.

(ooc)
I am not sure what to roll for the portcullis.
She rolled a 5 on a 1d6 if it is an open doors situation, so probably a failure, unless she can try again.
She rolled a 3 on d20 if it is a strength check, so probably a success, if it is something you must roll ability score or less.

It was difficult with the rust. So she stepped back, brought her lantern closer, took a breath, and tried once more. This time she could feel it starting to move, so she redoubled her efforts, until she could safely pass underneath with her equipment- either by pulling it through or using a foot to slide it to the far side.

Once through, she let it drop and prepared to face the skeleton, if it arose.

The door north opened. There was a short passageway ten foot long which ended in an open archway. Beyond the archway was the stairs up.

In the corner hidden by the archway was a small body wrapped in tattered strands of spider silk, a grimace of agony contorted its features.

Seeing the entrance/exit made sense- all of those left turns would have formed a large circle. As for the corpse, she wondered if it was the dwarf who had walked off. That was unimportant though. What was important was that this meant spiders. Wounded as she was, and concerned about poison, it was an unattractive option to have to face one. But she had to go north.

She first looked about to see if there was a spider about, then lit a torch hoping the open flame would keep the bugs away.

Next, she checked to see if the body in the webbing was still alive.
If so, perhaps she could pull it back to the bone room to cut it free.

Up the stairs, and since she had only been in the dungeon long enough for one flask of oil, it should still be light enough out she could extinguish the lantern. She would keep the torch lit until outside completely, in case an animal or insect entered this area.

Once outside, the torch could be extinguished as well, and she would retrace her steps back to town, keeping an eye out for bandits, or other highwaymen who might want to loot from returning dungeon looters, which is why she had hidden the gem earlier.

Once back in town, she would go to get the gem’s value assessed and likely sold, so she would have enough coin to rent an inn room long enough to heal up, and also to buy or replace some equipment. And she would also enquire if there was a bounty on orcs in this part of the world- she had two of their heads on her belt after all.

When Stadhafi emerged from Stonehell dungeon it was barely past midday. The storms and high winds of her early travel had disappeared to be replaced by sunshine. The walk to Fourtower Bridge took the rest of the afternoon and on her journey Stadhafi met no danger.

The feast of sausage and cider continued at the Moorland Magpie Inn, Lorna charging four silver pennies for the meal. She was informed that there was no bounty on orcs however during her enquiries she did learn that there had been many goblins raids recently and that Athalgrim was keen to see them stopped. To sell the gemstone Stadhafi was advised to speak to Silar or Thomas, as both were rich and had a liking for beautiful and expensive things.

With no bounty on orcs, she just kept the heads in place for decoration. Later when she had more time, she could strip the flesh and goo from them and just leave the skulls. As for the goblins, that might be something for later. For now, to sell the gem. So she left to go see Silar. If the price seemed reasonable, then she could sell it then and there without visiting the other option.

"Done," she replied to the fop, uninterested in haggling.

Taking the money, she bought another oil flask to replace the one that was nearly used up in the lantern, a grappling hook, and another 50' of rope so that she could descend deeper wells should it ever come up again.

And then she went to the inn, renting a room long enough to fully heal from her injuries.
Unlike Leah, she gives no thought to sharing or selling her map. She risked death alone- anyone else should be willing to do the same or they were not fit to be there in the first place. Instead, she spends her time healing and stripping the flesh from the orc skulls. Perhaps she can have them made them into shoulder decorations for her armor.

The stripping of the flesh from the orc skulls was a grisly business but one which time and effort would achieve.

Millie's inventory general store sold a grappling hook for twenty five gold pieces, a line of rope for one gold piece and flask of oil for two gold.

The innkeeper Lorna charged Stadhafi one gold piece a night to stay in a private room or one silver piece a night to stay in the common room. The evening meal was pork sausages and cider again, Lorna had a load of sausages to be eaten this was expected to continue for many days to come, for four silver pieces.

She took a private rom for herself- both because money was meant to be spent, not hoarded like a dragon or a dwarf, but also because she would rather not share a room with imbecilic cowards, the likes of which were thick in this area.

Three days passed, and she was fully healed, ready to move on to some other adventure.

The dice rolls look good for a magic-user. The low strength doesn't really make any difference to a M/U and the high Constitution is great for the low hit points. Are you waiting to roll a high Intelligence, or some other criteria for M/U selection? A high intelligence really makes little difference to the M/U class.

I realize that in this edition a high intelligence makes little difference. But since I read about the game, I have had in mind the sort of character I would like to play. An above average intelligence, and hopefully charisma, but at least not a negative in it. That might not be the most optimized or useful or necessary, true, but that is what I have been hoping for each time.

Leah blundered about by luck, Stadhafi with intensity, and those were fine to try, but long term, I prefer to play someone pitting her cleverness and charm against the antagonists. Perhaps I am too influenced by Disney and fairy tales, but that is how my inner picture of my protagonist sits. ^_^
