In search of Da Dragon - Stadhafi

Backed into the alcove with the locked door Stadhafi prevented the four orcs to surround her. Two of the orcs advanced and the fighter struck out at them by missed her marked. The two orcs were pushed and jostled into battle by their companions, their attacks were poorly aimed and did not hit Stadhafi.

OOC Yes that rule is correct, however Stadhafi missed.

Her initial feints and thrusts had not met their mark. Fortunately, neither did theirs. Combat was on, although she still doubted their courage and their convictions, and she assumed that it was only a courage borne of numbers. So she decided that the best thing to do would be to see how they fared if they lost one.

This time she targeted the smallest one in range, while still keeping her back protected. The smallest would be the one they would least likely care about, but perhaps the reality of losing anyone might cause them to reconsider the whole attack.

(ooc)
Stadhafi rolled 18,6,3 using 1d20+1,1d8+1,1d4+1 ((17,5,2)).

So, 18 is probably a hit for 6 points of damage.

The pig faced orcs pushed Stadhafi in the corner. Cornered she fought fiercely and cut down one orc with her sword. The fighter was out numbered still and the orcs courage held out. Another orc stepped over the corpse with a snarl. It jabbed its spear at Stadhafi but the strike was turned aside by Stadhafi's platemail. At the same time an orcish club smacked Stadhafi's shoulder but protected she suffered no injury.

"That's one," she barked as the orc fell, twisting to slash her blades deeply across the next orc. Size did not matter at this point, she just attacked whichever one left himself vulnerable, while keeping herself as protected as she could.

Stadhafi rolled 16,9,4 using 1d20+1,1d8+1,1d4+1 ((15,8,3)).

Assuming that is a hit:
16 to hit, 9 points of damage.

The orcs pushed harder and their blows were more concerted. Defending against two was a difficult and eventually a spear broke Stadhafi's defence and she was wounded. In retaliation her sword struck the attacker and felled him. Two orcs remained.

OOC Stadhafi takes 5 damage.

The toddlers of my village have more bite to them,” she spit out as the spear struck. But despite her bravado, the damage was severe, and it threw off her next attack greatly. And she knew she could not take another such wound. Still, she had been hit when there were three and now there was only two remaining. Perhaps they have had enough with half their number dead. Perhaps not, and they intend to fight to the last. They would see soon enough.

Stadhafi rolled 3,4,5 using 1d20+1,1d8+1,1d4+1 ((2,3,4)

That 3 will miss for certain.

Her last attack may have missed but it was enough of a threat to have the craven orcs flee back to the west. Stadhafi was left alone in the dungeon again. The corpses of two orcs lay at the feet of the victorious fighter.

She considered throwing a dagger at one of them, but it would be a waste of a good weapon. So instead, she watched the cowards run into the dark. Once they were gone, she listened to hear if they were creeping back, but if not, she set about searching the two dead orcs for anything of value.

The two orc corpses wore dirty furs and rough clothes. They were particular poor specimens and Stadhafi found no jewelery or coin upon them. One had dropped a club and the other a spear. Both were primitive tools.

It was not a surprise they had nothing. So, she beheaded the two orcs, attaching the heads to her belt. Then taking the spear, she checked to see if she could either break down the locked doors south, or pry it open with the spear.

If successful, she would go into the crypt.
But if all failed, and the door would not open, then she would backtrack to the well. Perhaps the kobolds had finished their gatherings and she could go with her original plan to descend into the well.

A return to the cave full of phosphorescent mosses found it empty. The swarm of worms had been gathered up leaving the cave floor bare. The kobolds had gone elsewhere.

Uninterrupted Stadhafi tied her rope to the well and descended. She came to the end of her fifty foot of rope but had not reached the bottom of the well. Ten foot beneath her was a stretched out oilskin tarp. On the tarp was a rusty broken sign and two silver coins.

Ten feet was not very far- if she hung from the bottom of the rope it would only be a drop of three feet or so, easily doable without damage. But that would just be to the tarp- who knows how much further down the ground was below it? Injured as she was, it was not a risk to take. So, uttering an epithet, she climbed up again and recovered her rope. It looked like more backtracking was in order. She went back to where the orcs lay dead.

Looking them over, she briefly considered stripping them for their clothing and using it to lengthen her rope, but as rough and poor as the material was, but rejected the idea. It would hold her weight, but seemed unlikely to be able to hold her weight in platemail.

So, instead she went to the east, and then through the door there.

The door, four foot wide and eight foot tall was constructed of five inch thick, iron banded timbers. At a push from Stadhafi it did not yield nor open, it was stuck.

OOC Stadhafi may try again if they wish, roll an Open Door check if you do and repeat if you wish to continue.

A locked door might force her to turn aside, but a stuck one would not. Bracing her shoulder against the door, she gave it pressure until the door gave way.

A hefty push from Stadhafi successfully got the door to open. Beyond the door was a thirty by thirty foot room. There was another door in the south wall. In the room was a dry stone fountain adorned with a statue of a leaping fish.

There was no water in the fountain, so it was unlikely that fools would throw their money within. She still took a glance to see if there were any coins in the fountain, in case it had recently been emptied of liquid, but if not, she proceeded through the southern door.

The dry fountain had no coins in it. Stadhafi opened the south door, it led to a corridor with a lowered and rusty portcullis midway on the eastern side and a door to the south. Through the portcullis was a room with skeletal remains and old blood stains on the floor.

Stadhafi opened the heavy iron bound timbered door. The room beyond was twenty foot by thirty foot. On the wall opposite the door was a great stone dial adorned with glyphs. The glyphs were in the image of smiling and frowning faces.

There was no other entranceways or doors in the room.

Presumably, smiling was good and frowning was bad. If a frowning face was at the top of the dial, she tried to turn it so a smiling face was on top. If a smiling face was on top, then she tried to turn it to the next smiling face.

The stone dial had a smiling face at the top and a handle so that the dial could be spun. Stadhafi found that the wheel turned easily when she gripped the handle, it however was well balanced so any control of where it stopped was lost as it rolled swiftly on its bearings. In a loud clamour it spun around and around.

The dial spun easily, more easily than she had expected for it's material. The noise was not as unexpected though, and she turned towards the door, in case something heard the noise and came to investigate. She could check the dial when it quieted.

She picked up the blue gem and pocketed it away. Despite no dragon, this delve had not been a waste after all. And this gem was certainly better than a few silver coins she could not reach.

Consideration was given about spinning again- she believed in luck, but she also believed in not pressing one's luck. The result had been good, so it was best to be content with that for now.

So, she exited out of the room, going to the portcullis. She tried to either lift it enough to get underneath, or squeeze through the bars if they were far enough apart. If she was successful, she readied to battle the skeleton she saw within.

(ooc)
I am not sure what to roll for the portcullis.
She rolled a 5 on a 1d6 if it is an open doors situation, so probably a failure, unless she can try again.
She rolled a 3 on d20 if it is a strength check, so probably a success, if it is something you must roll ability score or less.
