player, 1 post Fri 13 Nov 2020 at 23:15 | Traveling for next few daysall right. not much to say to that other than I got the message and will come up with a character bio. warning: I do a good job of coming up with a character's appearance and personality, but not at backstories, so expect something barebones.

player, 4 posts Wed 25 Nov 2020 at 02:13 | Florie PuntOoookay. Insofar as my fried brain can generate words, I have a basic idea:
Florie has four siblings in a working class household. The slums. Lives with a strict, disciplinarian mother. Seeks refuge in rebellion. Runs away. Petty scammer. Runs into a "Professor" LaBlanche, a tall, spectral and icy man (who I envision as gay, but not exactly open about it) who plays the part of her uncle. She acted as confederate in a fake séance act which traveled around Great Britain. Whether actually French or not, LaBlanche could speak it like a native and over the next few years, he made sure to immerse her in the language by speaking it all the time.
Why, for Florie, an advantage of speaking French over English? So she could hide her working class accent, which, as herself, she would have difficulty doing. The fake French accent enable her to sound "proper".
One to three years ago, Flroie had a falling-out with LaBlanche (kind of a jerk) or something, leaving her on her own.

player, 6 posts Sun 29 Nov 2020 at 02:17 | Florie PuntA question for ya. Will you ask me to roll or will you do this rules-invisible? I don't have a preference. Just asking! Also, I have updated my character bio.

GM, 8 posts Regem Angelorum Venite adoremus Mon 30 Nov 2020 at 13:02 | Florie PuntMostly this will just be interactive storytelling. Only if there gets to be a real chance occurrence will I ask you to roll the dice.
I like the addition to your bio. Nice depth.

GM, 11 posts Regem Angelorum Venite adoremus Wed 2 Dec 2020 at 13:26 | Florie PuntI tend to write in the present tense for role playing. It increases the sense of immediacy for me as I compose. I slip and will even mix tenses from time to time. I grew up being taught that third person past tense was the correct narrative form. But so much of what I was taught at school was bullshit. If you would rather one than the other, I'm happy to accommodate.

just say "keep present tense!" or "keep past tense!" and I'll go with whichever one.
also, I forgot to thank you for the info on money. could you point me to a good reference for this, in case it might come up?
one bit of IC detail that I forgot to incorporate into last night's post: Florie passes herself off as an orphan. people who already know her (or the persona, rather) know this about her.

GM, 15 posts Regem Angelorum Venite adoremus Sat 5 Dec 2020 at 13:08 | Florie PuntPresent tense it is. I realize I keep dropping into it no matter how I start the piece. As I said, it just feels so much more immediate for me.
As to trusting Julian, she's only just met him. He seems very nice, very handsome, witty, genuine, etc. Indeed, I am hoping that she will allow him to woo her as the story progresses. An upfront confidence for her to him would go a long way to increasing their bond right now, but if she confesses to being a fraud and trying to trick the Leatherby's out of money she will put herself in a very different class than he is and she would not judge that he would keep her secret. She is essentially an enemy of his friend and they are just strangers on a train. But if she were to tell him her cover story in confidence, that would be well accepted and put her in an exotic light.
In general, I plan to talk through things rather than roll dice, though in a few days it would be nice to come up with a character sheet for her along with a list of her gear.

I had in mind something less radical than revealing everything... still risky, though.

player, 13 posts Fri 11 Dec 2020 at 20:09 | Florie PuntI have a crappy news... as much as you said from the onset that the game would involve flirting, the romance angle does not work for me in practice. Based on PBP roleplaying in the past, I thought it best to say so directly. I would like to continue with the game, though, if you don't mind. I have liked what you have written so far.
