The Setting - Aether Spira

The Aether Spira campaign setting is an alternate history of the real world Earth where magical creatures exist.

Most magical creatures are from other planets or parallel planes of existence (or both).

The elves are from Alfheim, the dwarves are from Nidavellir, the giants are from Jotunheim, etc. All planes are connected through the World Tree, Yggdrasil, which is not a literal tree but a collection of interdimensional pathways and gateways, though most not having an understanding of the cosmos refer to the many ports and portals of Yggdrasil as "roots".

Magic and magical understanding of space and planes of existence is behind most people. They simply refer to different worlds as "through the roots of Yggdrasil" as the concept of traveling to other planets through space is far fetched for most commoners, let alone explaining extraplanar and extratemporal travel. Adventurers might get the gist of it though if a wizard takes the time to educate them.

A Day in the Life...
Contrary to Human belief, humans and Midgard are not the center of the universe, but they are positioned in a convenient spot in the universe for many different interdimensional crossways to move nearby. This makes our Midgard and the Midgards of parallel dimensions it overlaps with it a convenient waystation for interdimensional travellers. Which is why so much magic and weird stuff keeps popping up and why the world is in danger of destruction every 1,000 years or so. Some nutjob has to go poking a Great Old One or trying to bring about a planetary apocalypse using an ancient intergalactic artifact from another dimension.

We're pretty much the Florida of the universe and the big bads constantly threatening our local towns are the Florida Man events. It seems apocalyptic to use but to the Over Gods, Outer Gods, and other cosmic beings, it's a bit of a joke...if even that much of a blip on their radar. Elder gods care at least. They have the decency to occasionally bless mortals and wish them good luck before they go back to ignoring our prayers.

It's really stressful being a legendary hero in Aether Spira. You're lucky to find a day off to enjoy any of that wealth and prestige before you get axed by the Orc Terror King or devoured by the Dragon God eventually.
